- PrometheusBorn, on 08/10/2008, -12/+221Hey, I haven't seen a Batman digg post in like.. a whole day. Better digg this one to get my fix.
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 08/10/2008, -4/+119Why does every article have to bring in the fact that with inflation this is only at 49th? Do they ever bring the state of the economy into the picture? What about the fact that when Gone With The Wind was released there wasn't another huge film being released every week (Pineapple Express, Step Brothers, Mummy, X-Files, or even beforehand with Hellboy II and Hancock)? Or the fact that back then (or even with Titanic, Star Wars, any of them) they didn't have to worry about piracy? Say what you will about it but if every person that downloaded the film went and saw it instead, that would be quite a bit more money coming in. Or what about Titanic being number one for 15 straight weeks? Movies aren't in theaters for more than two or so months anymore and are usually on DVD within 6 months of release. Titanic was still in theaters 6 months after release.
The fact is that you can't just say "adjusted for inflation". There are waaay too many factors to point out. The fact that this movie is going to break $500 million in less than two months is amazing. The fact that it is going to do it in this economy is even more amazing. And what is the international box office pull? What this film has done is something to marvel at, not demote for not being tops due to inflation. Why can't people just look at something for what it is, what it has done and not pick it apart for not being good enough according to something as trivial as inflation. = - LordSnootington, on 08/10/2008, -2/+70Show me a guy that says Video Piracy is killing the Box Office and i will show you a liar.
- Calypsoaf, on 08/10/2008, -6/+74I dugg this story just to piss of people who don't know how to ignore stuff on the internet.
- c010rb1indusa, on 08/10/2008, -3/+66As Hannah Montana has proven, the tween market is one of the strongest in the country. Batman ruled and just as many people have probably seen the Dark Knight as Titanic, but the Dark Knight doesn't have 12 year old girls going back to the theater to catch batman for the 8th time. It's just so hard to overcome a movie that so many people saw multiple times.
Despite all that I still hopes it beats Titanic, an overblown love story should not be the top box office movie of all time. - Dumbledorito, on 08/10/2008, -5/+60It's also got little to no competition. The closest thing, genre wise, is the thoroughly awful "Mummy" sequel, and we're still weeks away from the next film in this category, that CGI "Clone Wars" travesty that Lucas is unleashing.
- Evilblobs, on 08/10/2008, -3/+30Yeah but it's revenue rate dropped almost like 40%.
If that trend continues it wont beat Titanic.
Also, at its current rate, there is NO way it'll take the worldwide box office.
Dont get me wrong, its a great movie, but its looking less likely to take the box office crown. - DickyT83, on 08/10/2008, -3/+28Pineapple Express.
- terajoule, on 08/10/2008, -7/+31How about a magic trick? I'm gonna make this article disappear.
- fuzzmeister, on 08/10/2008, -3/+23I disagree with that assessment of The Dark Knight. The character of Batman is shown to be conflicted, and often does morally questionable things in his pursuit of justice, calling into question whether he really is a true "hero" or "good guy". Also, characters like The Joker aren't exactly the same thing as Al Qaeda-type terrorists, so I'm not seeing that connection.
- SpongeBad, on 08/10/2008, -0/+19True enough. If Dark Knight proves anything, it's that if you make a movie that isn't *****, people will still show up. I haven't seem The Mummy 3 yet, but based on the previews, I'll probably wait for it to show up on a movie channel (or pirate it guilt free...the studios don't feel guilty about taking my money for ***** sequels, after all)
- cowsgonemadd3, on 08/10/2008, -1/+18I might go see it in IMAX this next week while on vacation. I kinda hope we do.
- Rsam, on 08/10/2008, -1/+18Ta-da! It's, it's still here...?
- morphinapg, on 08/10/2008, -3/+19This is the last week Dark Knight will be #1 unfortunately, next week Clone Wars will be #1 with Tropic Thunder at #2, Dark Knight will be either 3rd or 4th next week.
- JettaMan, on 08/10/2008, -3/+18Is that "Clone Wars" movie really going to be in theaters? WTF? Pure television/straight to DVD if you ask me.
- onux16, on 08/10/2008, -2/+17The only reason why I'm even slightly curious about Tropic Thunder is because Robert Downy Jr.'s character gets his skin colored altered, followed later in the trailer by "What do you mean-- you people?"
That's it. Honestly. - plarp, on 08/10/2008, -4/+18good going multinational corprate movie studios!
- preppypoof, on 08/10/2008, -6/+19pineapple express would have won this weekend, but it opened on wednesday. (go see it!)
- ichbeineinrcg, on 08/10/2008, -1/+14Miley Cyrus as Harley Quinn = BOX OFFICE GOLD!!!~!
- mchisari, on 08/10/2008, -2/+15
The Dark Knight was not a conservative movie, nor did it present clearly defined moral questions. In fact, quite the opposite. Every decision was morally ambiguous, and all had unintended consequences. None of Batman's goals were fulfilled, and Gotham at the end of Dark Knight is a nightmarish playground of grandiose psychopaths compared to the merely depressed and crime-ridden Gotham that it was at the beginning of Batman Begins.
I keep hearing this argument from conservatives, that Dark Knight acts as a form of glowing propaganda for conservative moral values, but it falls apart for anybody who watches the movie for what it is: A complex critique of moral systems, it acts more as a sort of Rorschach Test of the viewer than it presents any moral viewpoint itself.
Joker exists because of Batman. Harvey is scarred because he insists on a heavy hand, casting a wide net in the name of "justice", despite having fascist sympathies with Imperial Rome, prompting a backlash in kind. Nothing works according to plan, all of the "schemers" fail in their goals.
But the interesting thing I find in the conservative response to this movie, is the sort of "Hero" worship. That the results are inconsequential. Gotham City, like Iraq, can continue to devolve and crumble, as long as a big, strong hero exists for the adolation of conservatives who seek that simple, violent solution to society's complex problems. Even if the name of that hero does end up being Caesar. - HappyScrappy, on 08/10/2008, -1/+14It never was going to beat Titanic. It doesn't appeal enough to the crowd outside of the young male demographics.
Still, it did fantastic. - mistergoomba, on 08/10/2008, -0/+12if it's the number 1 movie for 4 weekends, of course it'll still be on Digg!
- mdaize, on 08/10/2008, -0/+12Yeah, I noticed as well...
WHEERRE ARE THEY!!!!??!!! - fani, on 08/10/2008, -2/+13Awesome !! I still haven't watched Batman..... I will be in the weekend that pushes it over $600 million finally dethroning tit-anic.
That would be lovely lovely riddance. - TidusX, on 08/10/2008, -1/+11We aren't supporting them as much as we are supporting people like Chris Nolan, his brother, and David Goyer and all those involved for putting such a great movie together.
- Lucifugerising, on 08/10/2008, -0/+10Nice
Im really suprised, I thought for sure Pineapple Express would knock TDK to number 2.
Let's see how it fairs againts Tropic Thunder now. - DownIsTheNewUp, on 08/10/2008, -1/+10Diggers love to bury the truth.
- Vich, on 08/11/2008, -1/+9I hate you. It's a real disability you know.
- andrewthrice, on 08/10/2008, -2/+10You're way off the mark. Since when do strong moral values belong to either ideology? That, and there's a lot of moral ambiguity in this movie, such as when Batman uses the sonar device to find the Joker.
- cubicledrone, on 08/10/2008, -0/+8Wisecracking Star Wars cartoons? You can't go wrong! Think they'll have like 12 minutes of enraged flipping and spinning Yoda? Maybe Mace Windu will order a Kahuna Burger. They're real tasty.
- aelias, on 08/10/2008, -1/+8Saw it. Not nearly as funny as I thought it was going to be. Pretty funny. Not Superbad funny. Not NPH in Harold and Kumar funny. But funny.
- motivatedguy, on 08/10/2008, -5/+12Tropic Thunder will probably de-throne batman this coming week
- vsujohn2, on 08/10/2008, -2/+8Ignore it
- scrumtrallecent, on 08/10/2008, -1/+7Granted that there has been a surge in Dark Knight stories lately. But compared to the other stories, this one seems to be worth attention, considering that not alot of movies have been doing this successful lately.
- MonkCanatella, on 08/10/2008, -0/+6It probably did better than Titanic seeing as how it's only targeted at young males.
- jshooter1377, on 08/10/2008, -24/+30Honestly, this movie is a tad overrated. It was good, but not as good as most people make it out to be.
- infinityredux, on 08/10/2008, -1/+6there's really nothing wrong with supporting movie studios either. They made this film possible. Just because it's a *gasp* CORPORATION doesn't mean it's evil.
- tas08, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5Totally agree. I would just add that also, back in the days of Gone With The Wind, you saw it in theaters or you didn't see it at all for the most part. People didn't have VHS and DVD players, let alone full out home theater systems like we do today. People didn't say "I'll wait for it to come out on video", it wasn't an option.
So box office earnings were basically ALL the earnings. To get a comparable number with a modern movie in my opinion you'd have to also add in revenue from DVD/BR/downloads/rentals, etc. - logicet, on 08/11/2008, -1/+6You're right, you should see a mortician about that.
- WolfDV, on 08/10/2008, -1/+6u really should, it makes the movie that much more intense... the city scenes, the louder more detailed sounds, and the awesome hospital scene is epic filmed in imax
- 33PercentGod, on 08/11/2008, -1/+6Tropic Thunder was better when it was called The Three Amigos.
- Hypermarkalan, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4You're making way too much sense. You do realize that this is the internet, right?
- ichbeineinrcg, on 08/10/2008, -1/+5If I could get an article called "OBAMA TO PLAY BLACK MASK IN BATMAN 3?!?!?" to the front page, dueling fanboy universes would collide.
- jmpeagle, on 08/10/2008, -0/+4no one said it would, not ever Warner Brothers
- damack, on 08/10/2008, -3/+7It could potentially beat The Titanic yet it's still going strong despite some good competiton. Internationally it still hasn't released in several regions yet so who knows if it will take the world record.
Still though it's refreshing to see a good movie making money it's usually the crappy "E" movies that dominate the box office while good movies with actual flair don't get much attention since they don't appeal to everybody from the kids to grandma.
Maybe now the studios will stop making E and PG13 movies out of everything. Since "The Dark Knight" has taken the box office by storm we've already been informed "Terminator: Salvation" and the upcoming "Robocop" movie have both been reclassified as R rated movies instead of PG13 which they were both initially rumoured or confirmed to be.
The Dark Knight could very well bring back movies that aren't filtered and watered down for a worldwide audience to maximise profit. A great movie regardless of rating is going to do well and The Dark Knight should have an interesting effect on the upcoming superhero movies. - inactive, on 08/10/2008, -3/+7test: 9/11 was an inside job!
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 08/10/2008, -0/+3First off, don't spam. Reported to Digg. Second, this wasn't his last film. Ledger will star in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus which wasn't done filming when he died. Colin Ferell, Johnny Depp, and Jude Law will finish off his character as he is transformed when traveling through magical realms.
- DeskFlyer, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3I guess this means I have to see the movie now.
