Dark Knight Sets One-Day Record of $66.4M, Beats Spiderman 3
ap.google.com — Stoked by fan fever over the manic performance of the late Heath Ledger as the Joker, "The Dark Knight" set a one-day box office record with $66.4 million on opening day. The movie's Friday haul surpassed the previous record of $59.8 million set last year by "Spider-Man 3. The Dark Knight" might break the opening-weekend record of $151.1 million.

- jellydoughnut21, on 07/19/2008, -1/+10I'd like to see it happen, but I just don't think it will. Titanic benefited from having something for everyone. It brought in people for the love story, it brought it people for the destruction, it brought in middle schoolers for the boob scene. It really spanned the entire age group from about 9-100, which is very rare. The Dark Knight does have wide appeal, but it's dark nature will probably steer some parents away from taking their kids, and many older adults are not too into comic book movies. It will be huge, but not Titanic huge.

- sjbdallas, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5Fantastic movie. Ledger's Joker is perfect for this new series.
I've heard some complain that it was too long but I felt like it went pretty fast. There weren't any points that I thought I could run to the bathroom during.

- sjbdallas, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Agreed. But are there any others that don't rely on super powers? I can't think of any but before someone points out some obscure dark horse series with non-super powered character, I'm referring to mainstream popular characters in the DC/Marvel world.

- LucerinRed, on 07/19/2008, -0/+8Correction: New Batman Movies > New Spiderman movies. Not many people will argue against that, but please, lets be civil and not even get into the fanboy war that is Superhero X vs Superhero Y
- Mothh, on 07/19/2008, -1/+5I agree with LucerinRed. From a comic book standpoint, Spiderman titles have been outselling Batman titles for decades. I don't think even a hardcore Spidey fan myself could defend Spiderman 3.

- LemmingJesus, on 07/19/2008, -2/+30Almost too valid...
- joel8x, on 07/19/2008, -1/+6So valid that it is stated in every single thread about movie grosses since the dawn of the internet.
- AndrewDB, on 07/19/2008, -1/+6900 people saw it at midnight in one theater in my town, at midnight. 3 theaters, completely packed.. I can't testify to the other theaters that held it..
- dumbducky, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2I went last night, and of the 3 theaters in my city, it nearly sold out. The showing I got tickets for was packed, and not even the one I wanted to go to. I showed up two minutes early for the one I wanted to see, and I had to wait an hour for the next available one.
- MasterEvilAce, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5Went in for the 12:01 showing at my local theater. We only got tickets because they decided to open a 6th showing of batman. Originally there were 3, then those sold out so they made it 4, etc. I was in the 6th showing and it was FILLED. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a 7th.
- happyfundave, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5they had it in 9 screens at the theater i was at. It was kinda a big deal.
- BlaqReaper, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1The theater I work at had 15,000+ tickets sold for Friday alone. Of course other movies helped (Mamma Mia), but you can bet the majority of that came from TDK.
Just to put in perspective how ridiculously popular the movie is, we had about 8-9 theaters playing TDK including the IMAX which is currently playing it for 48 hours straight (Friday through Sunday). .So far, all the IMAX showings are also completely sold out (12:01 am, 3:15 am, 6:15 am).
- Nubli, on 07/19/2008, -2/+10Ticket prices haven't risen in my area in years. An adult has to pay anywhere from $9.50-$10.50 depending upon which theater he/she goes to. If the theater is relatively old, the cheaper price shows. The newer ones are the higher price. However for years now this has been the price range. It was the same when Spiderman 3 came out, it was the same two days ago, and it's the same right now and will be for the rest of the weekend.
- bbliss17, on 07/19/2008, -1/+13Tickets for the most part are the same when spiderman 3 came out
- bryceman111, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2In my area, the best theater is the cheapest. It has stadium seating, student price is 4 bucks, adults 6.50 - maximum. It is sometimes even cheaper for adults. They can easily do it because of the amount of business they get from being about 1/2 price the competition.
- BTConan, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Damn, I paid 5 dollars for my ticket.
- tech42er, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Damn. Tickets are $12 in New York.
- redfred18t, on 07/19/2008, -1/+9Ticket prices have been about the same around here for the past 3-4 years
- flyingspatula, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3Spiderman 3 vs. Titanic ticket sales. You're telling me that you know of people that went to see Spideman 3 more than once? Remember hearing about people watching Titanic 6 times? All i'm saying is that there needs to be a level bar set between movies and using revenue is not a good indicator - it does not take into account inflation.
- mellenger, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1This is embarrassing but i think I saw Titanic 4 times in the theater. Umm, they had just opened stadium style theaters, so it was more the while experience. Plus it was in the theaters for 4 months.
- RadiatedAnt, on 07/19/2008, -4/+3Your theory is flawed in the sense that box office sales rising, the extra cost to operate the theaters in this case is not going to the overall profit the movie has made but rather consumed in order to run said facilities.
- jameskong15, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2Your assessment of the theory is flawed as you seem to believe that every penny of price increases goes directly to operating costs of a theater. It's as if the $9.00+ increase over the past 60+ years all magically went to the theater under your version.
- haterofps3, on 07/19/2008, -1/+2The comparison is to Spiderman 3 and while you make a valid point about ticket prices the change from when spiderman 3 came out to this movie isn't even worth mentioning.
Bat > Spider always. - HanSolo69, on 07/19/2008, -1/+2Three theaters in my area cost different amounts...so this doesn't really make a difference. Especially not over one year.
- avrygoodfrnd, on 07/19/2008, -1/+0when i saw it, the theater was 100 percent full, and that was around 4 pm yesterday
- AparoidX, on 07/19/2008, -1/+1You have to take IMAX theaters into account. They are significantly more expensive than a standard theater, and I'm sure tons of IMAX theaters were packed opening night.
Then again, I'm sure many people saw Spiderman 3 in IMAX opening night. Who knows? - theutopian, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1I paid $6.50. Can't beat that.

- FuZi0nDET, on 07/19/2008, -3/+4By how much? Last year I was paying around the same I am now 8.75 or 9.75 for a late night show. The last time I thought prices where decent was about 7 years ago.
- avrygoodfrnd, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1dude, where I live its 10.50
- freqk, on 07/20/2008, -0/+112.00 here... 12.00 also for a large popcorn and 8 for a large drink.
- sjbdallas, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1yeah, i don't think the prices have changed too much over the past 3 or 4 years for movies. Comparing to Batman Begins, Spiderman 2 or 3, and maybe the last star wars should be pretty safe. But when they start throwing in ET, Titanic, Return of the Jedi, and movies that far back it's definitely not the same.
- FuZi0nDET, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1True; I think when the Titanic dropped it was like 5.25 for a prime time ticket.
- Cheeselover, on 07/19/2008, -10/+1People need to stop whining about paying $10 for a drink and popcorn. Here in Toronto, we pay 5 dollars alone for a small bottled water at any sports event.
- silverharbinger, on 07/19/2008, -0/+0That's the same price as it is here in the US, and it's in USD, not CAD. Even though that doesn't make as much of a difference as it used to, we still get ripped off just a little bit more.

- alexdeeley, on 07/19/2008, -4/+30"Stoked by fan fever over the manic performance of the late Heath Ledger as the Joker..."
I think that statement misrepresents what makes this film so phenomenally wonderful. While Heath's performance is absolutely brilliant, it's a drop in the bucket of the genius in The Dark Knight.- Epik, on 07/19/2008, -1/+14I think the rest of TDK was pretty good for modern comic book action flicks but Heath just took it to a whole new level. The Joker is the only reason I'm going to see it again in IMAX tomorrow. Without him, I wouldn't bother watching it twice in theaters.
- sjbdallas, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I'd be very surprised if anyone was going to see this just because it was Ledger's last movie. That might make good headlines or talk show commentary but it doesn't necessarily put butts in the seats.
- Draculecom, on 07/19/2008, -11/+31Another Dark Knight story. Guess it beats the usual iPhone bitches.

- andy421983, on 07/19/2008, -19/+7Ok, so I went to the Dark Knight yesterday. While the movie was good and entertaining---it fell far short of my expectations and I now think its the most overrated movie in history. The plot-line was just extremely schizophrenic. Lots of things were left hanging with no explanation. Its like the guy had a 6 hour movie and had to squish it into 2 hours and 30 minutes. I'm afraid I'm getting too old. If a movie doesn't have tense music going during the entire film, and 10,000 edits and flashy special effects happening every 10 seconds then it won't capture the hearts or attention of today's youth. It was a good film, but not even close to a "masterpiece" as some people are claiming. In fact, I thought the first Spiderman was probably better. I'd give the Dark Knight a solid B. But its not worthy of an Oscar.
- appleseed1234, on 07/19/2008, -3/+2Dugg for pre-emptive hindsight.
- SuperJimmyJimbo, on 07/19/2008, -4/+1yeah, I'd agree with you that it was too much movie for 2.5 hours. it was simply exhausting, and despite being the most hyped film of the year, suffered from 3rd act problems.
that said...it KICKED ASS - futebollounge, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2you definitely need to see more movies to enjoy a good one. I however give it a B+ and Heath Ledger's performance and A.
- keyforce, on 07/19/2008, -8/+3Buried, dupe. It's even on the front page still.
- LucerinRed, on 07/19/2008, -1/+57Hurray, A film setting this record that actually deserves it, unlike it's trashy predecessor, Spiderman 3
- reed311, on 07/19/2008, -2/+13Congrats to all the share holders in the movie studio.
- Epik, on 07/19/2008, -7/+15Ledger single-handedly flew with this flick. Even with all the hype about his performance I wasn't expecting this. Batman Begins and the rest of The Dark Knight pales in comparison to The Joker. It's so unfair that we won't be seeing anymore of him.

- Xihix, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4I paid the same amount for Spiderman 3 (worst decision ever) as I did with TDK last night. Yes, I save all my stubs.
- RationalXubrnce, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1 Exactly, the movies was 11.50 last time I went and that's more than it was last year.
- RedneckRandy, on 07/19/2008, -1/+6finally redemption. i HATED that spiderman was more popular than batman. Batman is infinitely times cooler than Spiderman
- pcore, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1He is now. Thanks to the movies. At least thats the case for me.
- necromancer, on 07/19/2008, -1/+12Ironman, Wall-e, Batman 2... good summer.
- philberttheduck, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4throw in Pineapple Express and you're golden. FOR LIFE
- ShadowFox06, on 07/19/2008, -4/+1You forgot INCREDIBLE HULK.
- electrostat, on 07/19/2008, -1/+2Can i just say ..... HELLZ YEAH
- Zippo, on 07/19/2008, -0/+21Christen Bale is an amazing Batman... his voice as Batman is so gritty you can feel it. It's like he's gargling rocks - I love it.
- koanage, on 07/20/2008, -3/+2I'd have to disagree on the voice. It was the worst part for me and the group I saw it with for each movie.
- omarlassan, on 07/20/2008, -0/+0correction ---> gargling water
- teh_spazz, on 07/19/2008, -1/+4***** YES.
- hansolo007, on 07/19/2008, -0/+10brilliant movie and performances, a must see.
Finally a 2 1/2 hour long movie that wasn't too long.- omarlassan, on 07/20/2008, -0/+0harry potter 6 is gonna be longer then that !!!
- CodeCobalt, on 07/19/2008, -10/+1I went to see Dark Knight last night as opposed to going to a wonderful prime aged steakhouse. While dark knight was good, it was definitely no steakhouse. Dark Knight was good but far too drawn out, not to mention seeing it at midnight was just too late for me on 2 hours of sleep. Left half-way through the movie, regretting I didn't choose the steak house. For a similar price ($10 for ticket, $11 for popcorn/soda) I so could have had a better steak.
The movie is good. The role is outta this world for heath ledger, never could have imagined him as the joker... but nothing about the movie is FANTASTIC, just better than normal.- taffyhealscrowd, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1
- spriltsc, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5maybe you should have watched the whole movie before you pass judgement
- deiloot, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5Perhaps you're right. Or perhaps you were looking at the screen thinking about steak and sleeping.
- philberttheduck, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1You really were setting yourself up for a bad experience. I ate at 2 and the last thing on my mind when I left the theaters was eating.
- tech42er, on 07/19/2008, -1/+2So you're trying to compare a movie to going to a steakhouse and you blame the movie for your sleep deprivation? ***** off, troll.
- CodeCobalt, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1perhaps its because i'm a food junkie... but today on talk radio (phantom gourmet) they were talking about whats a better time, going to the movies, or a nice restaraunt. i'd choose a nice restaraunt almost any day.
Reason I didn't, girlfriend was at a relative of a friends wedding, so I didn't want to go out to eat alone. after driving for hours trying to figure out what to do, and being told the steakhouse I wanted to go to had a 30 minute wait, I decided on the movies instead. I agree, it might be better if I wasn't tired..... but I wasn't tired when I went into the movie.. it made me exhausted. there were some good parts, but given all the hype I expected an absolutely knock out roll by heath ledger. His roll was better than good, but not great.

- jjaime213, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4Dark Knight is a great movie and it has been expected all the year, so yes its most likely it will break some records!
- wastedthelight, on 07/19/2008, -5/+1how many more times today is this going to be posted???????????
- HanSolo69, on 07/19/2008, -1/+9Are they implying that no one was excited about this movie before Heath Ledger died?
- knopper67, on 07/19/2008, -1/+1066.4 Million?
Piracy costing them money MY ASS.
I'd be more than happy with that much.- jjb123, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2Exactly, they'll blame anyone but themselves when their ***** movies fail to produce.
- AparoidX, on 07/19/2008, -0/+7They had a good eye for detail in the movie. Did anyone notice the Bat-shaped brake pads on Bruce Wayne's Lamborghini?
- Kristijan12, on 07/19/2008, -0/+10DK is curently ranked #1 on IMDb top 250 list with 9.5.
- Shenzhov, on 07/19/2008, -11/+2I didn't think this movie was really that good. The guy playing batman sounds like he swallowed a squirrel when he talks. The batcycle looks stupid and the cheap plastic parts bounce all over when it moves.
The joker is not very convincing, you keep waiting for him to say or do something interesting and it just never happens. The few times you get interested in what he's saying, his dialog just peters out. Too many blurry scenes with just nonsense going on and no real cool bat toys to speak of. All the fight scenes are dark and the camera moves around way too much to see what's going on with any interest.
It's making a lot of money because it's a batman movie, but nothing I'd ever want on dvd or to see again.- darththomas, on 07/19/2008, -1/+4***** YOU!
- bugerking3, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4I found the joker to be an amazing performance. The quirks, the mannerisms, and the tone of voice all brought the Joker character to life. Any Batman movie in the future that features the Joker will always feel like a let down to me because it will always feel like a derivative of something else. The Joker character has so much room for interpretation, and Heath Ledger, in his brilliance or in his psychotic craziness, recreated the Joker and upped the standard of what performance is.
- ShadowFox06, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1LoL.
You sure its a squirrel and not a rabbit?
- Orlong, on 07/19/2008, -8/+2I wonder how much it wouldve made if Heath hadnt died. Im guessing about a third of what it made because he died

At the mall I almost got mowed over by some Dragonball Z fanboy on his skateboard.
