- Jedimonkey27, on 12/10/2008, -10/+46The score to The Dark Knight was terrible. It worked in the film as background noise but if you actually sit down and listen to it you will be disappointed. I loved TDK but it shouldn't get awards it doesn't deserve.
- Secret7000, on 12/10/2008, -9/+44I don't think it deserves an Oscar for the score. For cinematography and visual effects I'd love to see it win, but was the score really that memorable?
- gaqua, on 12/10/2008, -28/+42I loved Dark Knight but compare it to stuff like Schindler's List or Shawshank Redemption? Give me a break.
Great movies cover great subtleties in the human condition, they reflect society and the problems and shades of grey therein.
The Dark Knight may win for costume design or makeup or score, but Best Picture? Giving Ledger Best Actor? Give me a ***** break.
Ledger's performance was amazing - but the character is pretty one-sided. He's a psychopathic killer with no explanation other than he just wants to watch stuff blow up. There's no character development - The Joker is a pretty one-sided villain. At no point did he even appear to have a doubt about anything. This is not the fault of the Actor - it's a fault of the writer.
But it's a movie where a guy dresses up like a bat and fights crime - it isn't supposed to be high art. It's entertaining, and I'd watch it a hundred times before I watched Schindler's List again, but that doesn't make it a better movie, just one I like more. If Heath Ledger wanted an Oscar he should have picked a role with more subtlety, more layers. The Joker was amazing, and a great performance, but it's not Oscar material.
Fanboys need to get a bit more realistic. - Secret7000, on 12/10/2008, -1/+13Then feel free to ignore any stories about it and not bitch about them.
- Trebis, on 12/10/2008, -2/+14Yes, but nobody cares about YOU either, so please stfu about it already.
- missjb, on 12/10/2008, -26/+37Good. I want this thing to win as many Oscars as possible.
- apena89, on 12/10/2008, -0/+11Why are you getting buried? Am I missing something here?
- sidewinderaim9x, on 12/10/2008, -4/+14Score!
- JordanV32, on 12/11/2008, -1/+11the sounds at every intense moment were ridiculously suspenseful
- jonnypockets, on 12/10/2008, -7/+16I bet it isn't enjoyable to sit down and listen to. But we're not talking about a Grammy; we're discussing the Oscars, an award given in context to the film. You twit.
- gnarkill726, on 12/10/2008, -8/+17Yeah because Schindler's List and Shawshank were so ***** subtle...
- AirRaven, on 12/10/2008, -7/+16Seconded.
*Awful* soundtrack.
Booming horns, and screeching violins- that's all you really hear.
There's barely any soundtrack to speak of in the first place- it's more background noise to fit the mood.
There's such a thing as too many violins.
Ghastly instruments from the get-go, but when you're treated to a steady string of high-pitched blackboard scratching for three hours in a row, it really does get to you.
Give Ledger an Oscar.
That's all that this film can honestly be said to truly deserve. - josak, on 12/10/2008, -0/+9*****
- josak, on 12/10/2008, -2/+10Who's comparing Dark Knight to Schindler's List? That's a first for me.
And I don't think the movie is as shallow as you make it out to be. In fact, it's quite a deep movie, and not even for a superhero film .
"they reflect society and the problems and shades of grey therein. " .. I thought this movie did that pretty well.
Also your description of the Joker as a "psychopathic killer with no explanation other than he just wants to watch stuff blow up" , is a bit of an exaggeration. He actually explains quite clearly in the movie why he does what he does and where his viewpoint comes from. To say that the Joker is not Oscar material is just insulting, imo. - RMoore08, on 12/10/2008, -0/+8and again.

- kinseyincanada, on 12/10/2008, -5/+11really i thought it was one of the best scores ive heard in years, the atmosphere it created and the rising scale was amazing.
- DevSingh1359, on 12/11/2008, -0/+5Seriously, I'm starting to realize how many ***** there are on Digg these days...I see completely normal comments get buried for no reason whatsoever.
- inactive, on 12/10/2008, -3/+82008.
- Secret7000, on 12/10/2008, -1/+6.....not an entirely relevant quote.
- Secret7000, on 12/11/2008, -0/+5Well, yes. But it would be an awful score if it didn't. It doesn't have to be a great score to enhance the moment. A great score has memorable themes - I've seen The Dark Knight 5 or 6 times, and I think the only thing I can distinctly point out is a two-tone melody that is throughout the film.
- dandonia, on 12/11/2008, -0/+4Why? TDK was great but it wasn't as good as Batman Begins.
- rolf, on 12/11/2008, -1/+5"Great movies cover great subtleties in the human condition, they reflect society and the problems and shades of grey therein."
For you. Other people have different tastes. Star Wars (original trilogy) and the Matrix (original one) have none of that but they are still great movies.
I don't know what makes a great movie, but if I'm willing to buy it after having seen it in the theater, I must have really liked it. But it's not always about high-minded ideals that professional movie critics debate about. Too many of those, and the movie theater would be as empty as with too many saw flicks. - betheturtle, on 12/11/2008, -3/+7...........................................________

- josak, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3zoom, if your referring the to that high pitched noise during the joker scenes, that was done using some kind of bow and a string instrument
And its not like that's the only thing on the entire soundtrack. Have you guys even listened to it? Check out tracks like "Aggressive Expansion" , "Like a Dog Chasing cars" , "Dark Knight", among others. - Gm7Cadd9, on 12/10/2008, -3/+6The Oscar committee has lost credibility for me... at least as it pertains to Film Scores. Last year Johnny Greenwood had an amazing score for "There Will Be Blood", yet they said it didn't have enough original content to qualify... I might have been able to forgive that if not for the previous year's folly:
Overlooking Clint Mansell's score to "The Fountain" was unforgivable, that soundtrack is one of the best of all time! - funkytaco, on 12/11/2008, -0/+3my favorite parts musically were when The Joker came on screen. The strings were like organized chaos. And the part where he hung out the window with the rocket launcher? Dead quiet. Best part of the movie for me.
But were those parts Oscar worthy? Outside of the movie, no. In the movie, yes, Oscar material. - ArthasMenethil, on 12/11/2008, -0/+3The Joker is a developed character... you may not have gotten the full enrichment from the movie because the Batman series (and the Joker) have been around for a long time. And as previous replies have noted, his character is developed quite a bit in TDK -- you learn some history as to why he's psychopathic. Heath's performance was so great not because it was Heath, but because he made the Joker feel like genuine evil. The key to a good villain is to make their villainy seem like it has "real" origins.
I don't know about you gaqua, but I got chills from some of the Joker's lines. If I get chills from anything, I know I'm being well entertained. - rabidsquirrelOG, on 12/11/2008, -0/+3I just saw the movie for the first time last night... I was blown away. The thing is a freaking masterpiece.
Others may not have liked it as much, but I was on the edge of my couch almost the whole way through. Towards the end, every time you thought they were about to wrap it up, it would just go to a higher plane of quality.
It grapples with deep aspects of the human condition as well. There may be better movies this year, but I've not seen them. For them to take comic book material to such a height, is incredible...
Great freaking movie. Definitely Oscar worthy. Heath was from another planet. - Kelmon, on 12/11/2008, -0/+3I can only say that if The Dark Knight wins Oscars then 2008 was a crap year for cinema. After all the hype I found it to be a disappointing movie and, as much as I was a fan of Batman Begins, I will not be bothering to buy this film on DVD. Heath Ledger put in a good performance but he was let down by everything else.
Honestly, 2008 has been a very disappointing year with many films that promised much but ultimately did not deliver. - timothycrash01, on 12/10/2008, -2/+5If you take a score like There Will Be Blood (from 2007 I know), and the score from The Dark Knight, you will see a massive difference in quality and imagination. The Dark Knight score was generic and served the basic utility of backing the drama. It wasn't original, had very bland themes, did nothing innovative or interesting - espcially considering the amount of people involved.
Like TDK, There Will Be Blood didn't qualify for score last year - but it was because too much of the music was based on previously released material (Greenwood's score for a BBC series a few years back). However, if there's any film that ever deserved to have a nomination and recognition from the Academy, it's that one. It fit the film perfectly, went above and beyond its primary function, and hopefully woke some Hollywood composers up from their coma - kinda like Elfman's 'Edward Scissorhands' score did in 1990. (Interesting that both scores came from composers who were in rock bands.)
However, 2008 was a terrible year for scores. In 2007 you had There Will Be Blood, Atonement, Michael Clayton, Sweeney Todd, Lust Caution, etc. - from period classical to minimal electronic. Great diversity and innovation. By comparison, The Dark Knight and every film this year has fallen short IMO. Maybe the Xmas season will bring some competition - Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, etc. - jgzman, on 12/11/2008, -0/+3What would you recommend instead?
- gaqua, on 12/10/2008, -1/+4You don't think Javier was multi-sided? He wasn't evil for evil's sake. He had his motivations. He got paid to do a job. He killed who he needed to - and let others live by his weird little coin flip thing. He seemed genuinely powerless at the end when he had to kill the wife because of the coin flip. He points out it wasn't his decision, and a coin flip is "the best he can do".
His entire conversation with the gas station attendant is more oscar worthy than anything Ledger did in Dark Knight. - DragonForce4, on 12/11/2008, -0/+3and again.
- Jimbob200, on 12/11/2008, -0/+3Check out CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON instead.
- gaqua, on 12/10/2008, -4/+7The characters were significantly more subtle. Good people who'd done bad things, bad people who'd done good things.
- bagboyrebel, on 12/11/2008, -0/+3Do you say that because it was an action movie? or is it because it's based on a comic? Why shouldn't this movie be worthy of an oscar, it was extremely well done.
- inactive, on 12/11/2008, -0/+2no, bardem was supposed to be the decider: he could kill or save lives. The scene at the end shows that he wasn't who he thouht he was; it wasn't the coin, it was him who made all these choices.
Of course, it's ambigous at the end because he gets into an accident, which could have killed him regardless of what he did. the whole movie is ambiguous but it's well done ambiguity so it works. - inactive, on 12/11/2008, -0/+2What book did you read that told you how to judge a movie?
- paulvq, on 12/11/2008, -0/+2I personally thought he was working more as an agent of fate than someone who was trying to alleviate his guilt by using a coin toss.
- betheturtle, on 12/10/2008, -1/+3Given the nature of Digg and the nature of this movie, I call frontpage.
- gaqua, on 12/11/2008, -0/+2I guess that's true - he does make the decision. But the fact that he does the coin flip thing shows that he tries to assuage his guilt about it, I think. He tries to avoid personal responsibility by saying it's all up to fate.
- OnBetamax, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2really thought that was going to turn into an obama joke.
- TheRedeemer, on 12/11/2008, -0/+2Mad props for that burn!
- inactive, on 12/10/2008, -1/+3Yeah cause they really need the cash....
- zoom1928, on 12/10/2008, -2/+4The problem isn't with violins in general. A good violin played properly does not sound like that. The problem is the idiot directors that want a specific screeching sound from them. They use cheap violins, low quality steel strings, play open string notes, use poor quality microphones, and use very poor microphone positioning (usually too close) to create that style of sound.
I played for Jerry Goldsmith on the soundtrack to Sleeping with the Enemy. Even that great composer strove to make the violins sound a little screetchy. I guess that was somewhat appropriate for the mood of the film, but it annoyed me that all of my work and money spent to get a good tone was for waste. - fowleryo, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2Overlooking Clint Mansell at all should be punishable by death. Man is straight genius.
