- Miamisun, on 07/19/2008, -3/+243Holy ***** that is a lot of moola. It will break the all time records for opening weekend without a sweat. I will be happy to see it remove the crown from that piece of ***** of a 3rd spiderman installment.
- bharadwajharish, on 07/19/2008, -5/+187I will digg anything positive about dark knight.I am The Dark Digger.
- Arcae, on 07/19/2008, -0/+173This movie deserves the records a whole lot more than Spider-Man 3 did.
- Wugie, on 07/19/2008, -1/+134That scene was the best introduction of a character I can remember.
- Chalks777, on 07/19/2008, -6/+132I believe in Harvey Dent.
- Androfire, on 07/19/2008, -5/+129**spoiler alert**: there is no Robin
- xParker, on 09/12/2008, -3/+121This movie is amazing on all levels. Heath was unbelievably creepy good. I don't care if that doesn't make sense, it's true.
- purplesawdust, on 07/19/2008, -3/+111I guess this is what happens when everything clicks in a movie (Marketing, Reviews, Movie itself)
- nthitz, on 07/19/2008, -1/+89Anyone who dugg this down obviously has not seen the movie yet.
- lilcvbballfreak, on 07/19/2008, -3/+89Did I tell you how I got these scars?
- BedPost, on 07/19/2008, -2/+83Digga please.
- inactive, on 07/19/2008, -0/+77That's not a spoiler alert... that's a "thank God..."
- TomRemixed, on 07/19/2008, -4/+67I even heard this movie can cure cancer!
- thedarkdigger, on 07/19/2008, -2/+63no, i am
- ArtGuy2k6, on 07/19/2008, -8/+69It's not about the money...
It's about the message.... - jp12380, on 07/19/2008, -0/+58This is unpossible, I guess the mpaa wiped out piracy, it's not like this movie is much better then the rest of the stuff Hollywood has put out, yup the only explanation is that they wiped out piracy.
/sarcasm - TwoKill, on 07/19/2008, -2/+57I saw this on an imax theater opening night and when it was finished the entire theater just couldn't move because of all the energy and excitement that had built up. I can easily say it was by far the best movie experience of my entire life.
- ericisroot, on 07/19/2008, -4/+54I helped.
- vsujohn2, on 07/19/2008, -2/+48Holy 60 million in one day batman!
- bagboyrebel, on 07/19/2008, -0/+45I think that was the moment when I decided that I loved this version of the Joker.
- Tallon29, on 07/19/2008, -5/+48I can make a pencil disappear.
- Malarie, on 07/19/2008, -0/+38It's all part of the plan.
- kingfoot, on 07/19/2008, -1/+34have you seen it?
that article on digg a short while ago about how we need to remember to give heath an award for the acting itself and not that he died?
yeah... i think he earned it. - Acglaphotis, on 07/19/2008, -0/+33:)
- gcnaddict, on 07/19/2008, -1/+33Bam! Gone.
- DennisIsAwesome, on 07/19/2008, -1/+30this movie was so ***** good and i thought it was all hype.
- bravo1995, on 07/19/2008, -1/+30NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
You ruined the movie for me. - TheThirdLevel, on 07/19/2008, -3/+31Why so serious?
- Shiftgood, on 07/19/2008, -2/+30in related news. Tickets are now 10.25
- hexydes, on 07/19/2008, -0/+28This should be single highest dugg post in this thread. Nothing proves how much BS the MPAA is pushing like summer blockbusters. The Hulk, Iron Man, Indiana Jones, and especially The Dark Knight, just serve to prove the point that if Hollywood released movies that people cared about, rather than movies they feel like making, or movies that push an agenda, etc. then they would make a lot more money.
And on top of that, Hollywood is doing just fine. Sales have been climbing every year, despite the "piracy problem". MPAA's complaints about piracy are nothing more than the middle-man squealing because his gravy train is about to run out of track.
Oh, and P.S. if either Iron Man or The Dark Knight, and additionally Robert Downey Jr. or Heath Ledger (or some combination thereof) don't win academy awards this year, then that just proves how much BS Hollywood is really trying to shove down everyone's throats. Both of those movies delivered well past just being "super-hero nerd flicks", and if Hollywood won't recognize that, then eff 'em. - elTito, on 07/19/2008, -0/+27TA-DAA!
- inactive, on 07/19/2008, -0/+26I agree that his acting was amazing. But you can't deny that his death did help draw people to the theaters to watch his final performance.
- iammzac, on 07/19/2008, -1/+23I still haven't seen spiderman 3, never had the urge.
- Acglaphotis, on 07/19/2008, -2/+23I hear that the joker has 2 speeds. Walk and kill.
- xParker, on 09/12/2008, -1/+21Because it was a spoiler and usually when you haven't seen a movie you don't want to read about it. Someone could be scrolling through the comments and just see a bit of your comment and pretty much ruin part of the movie.
- BooneFaustus, on 07/19/2008, -3/+22The ceremony isn't for his recovery, it's a funeral for Dent. Not because he's dead, but because they don't want Gotham to know what he's become. They blamed batman for his crimes, and let him "die" a hero. IMO he's sitting in a cell in Arkham along with the Joker.
- Gndoab, on 07/20/2008, -0/+19here is hoping that it beats titanic as the all time grosser too.
Why would anyone want to see a movie when they already know the ending?
"Oh my god...I wonder if the ship sinks!!?" - RadiatedAnt, on 07/19/2008, -1/+19that's a lie cause I just bolted out of there to beat the traffic.
- DeadlyCouncil, on 07/19/2008, -1/+19Man, when I saw this opening night, it was like a friggin' church, not a peep out of anyone durig the whole thing. People were mesmerized! You've got to see it in IMAX!
- c0baltfish, on 07/20/2008, -0/+17I'll never look at a pencil the same way again.
- spyraled, on 07/19/2008, -1/+18Go see it and you'll know.
- Wugie, on 07/19/2008, -0/+17I don't think you know who Gordon is
- presidentnixon, on 07/19/2008, -0/+17I have no personal stake in how much the movie makes, but I like to see films I love succeed.
- bravo1995, on 07/19/2008, -2/+18Rotten Tomatoes doesn't give out Oscars.
- Radan, on 07/19/2008, -0/+15And it hasn't even been released in all countries yet. I'm currently sitting here in Sweden, waiting eagerly to see it on the premiere on the 25:th.
- CrimsonBlur, on 07/19/2008, -1/+16Because if this movie breaks all the records, maybe we will actually start seeing more Summer Blockbuster movies that are also good movies.
- Me0wmix, on 07/19/2008, -3/+17Still can't get a ticket. >.>
- solesoul, on 07/19/2008, -1/+15I guarantee you that if it was Blade II, they had started advertising it 6 months in advance, shown it on multiple screens starting at midnight and continued non-stop, and a supporting actor died before it released, it wouldn't be breaking any records right now. And I liked the Blade series.
All of the things you listed played a role, but you forgot the most important + of all:
+make a kick-ass movie - hexydes, on 07/19/2008, -1/+15Also to add to your list:
+ When the supporting actor that dies before the release gives the performance of their life.
You can make all sorts of arguments about where Heath's performance falls on the spectrum of "best performance evar!", but I don't think anyone can argue that it was at least his A++++ game. -
