- Socratores, on 09/01/2008, -24/+126The Matrix got nothing on Dark City.
- birch25, on 09/01/2008, -0/+64well they're each great films, but despite what the story description says, the wachowski bros didn't get inspiration for the matrix films from dark city. dark city came out february 1998 and the matrix came out march 1999. they had sold warner bros the script, organized the entire production, and were shooting the film before they even saw dark city.
just saying - diggB, on 09/01/2008, -0/+48You happen to know the way to Shell Beach?
- chrysrobyn, on 09/01/2008, -6/+49Dark City vs. the 2 hour Matrix? Matrix.
Dark City vs. anything of the two sequels? Dark City.
Dark City was a fantastic movie, but The Matrix was better. Seeing The Matrix before knowing that there would be sequels made me ache for sequels. The Matrix obviously had an entire universe, an entire back story, and more to follow. What in fact followed was a terrible forcing of the issue; it amounted to little more than porn for special effects nerds.
The horrid nightmares that followed the original Matrix cloud the original masterpiece. - Cenobite, on 09/01/2008, -1/+34*****, they stole it from Plato. Some sci-fi story he wrote for a fanfic magazine in Athens back in the day. It's about a cave, I believe.
- CapitolK, on 09/02/2008, -0/+33The summary is a lie.
SUMMARY: "The visual effects, the story lines are so different from the original movie that it's like a whole new film"
ACTUAL ARTICLE: "This so-called “director’s cut” doesn’t feature any new scenes as such, just longer ones with more dialogue."
Where the hell did the total BS in the summary come from?! - MurphyWatson, on 09/01/2008, -9/+37THe matrix guys didn't get(steal) their idea from this movie, they stole it from some chick who wrote it in the 80s.
- inactive, on 09/01/2008, -1/+27Dark City is a movie I regret forgetting. I'll have to buy it soon.
- YodaJones, on 09/01/2008, -1/+23Great film, thanks for reminding me.
- ScreenRant, on 09/01/2008, -1/+22Awesome... love the original and I'll definitely be picking up this version.
Now if I only had a Blu-Ray player... - m0laria, on 09/01/2008, -0/+19I forget it everyday. It's like someone is messing around inside my head...
- etruscan, on 09/01/2008, -0/+16The fact that every time we talk about Dark City, the Matrix is invariably mentioned... is proof enough that The Matrix made a huge impression on its viewers. You may not think it's as good as Dark City, but it obviously holds some weight with you, and for good reason... The Matrix was a milestone in sci-fi filmmaking.
- InfinitySnatch, on 09/01/2008, -0/+13That's right, they only stole the rooftop set pieces.
- InfinitySnatch, on 09/01/2008, -2/+15Hey stupid, this is the original version of the film before New Line Cinema butchered it so moviegoers wouldn't feel stupid.
- monkeysama, on 09/01/2008, -0/+13First paragraph:
Hard to believe that’s been 10 years since the release of this criminally underrated sci-fi gem by the director of The Crow. This so-called “director’s cut” doesn’t feature any new scenes as such, just longer ones with more dialogue. Most importantly however it gets rid of an annoying voice-over narration by a wheezy Kiefer Sutherland which spills the beans within the first few minutes of the movie’s running time. - Jleagle, on 09/01/2008, -5/+17Oh no you didn't!
- raze888, on 09/01/2008, -1/+12Sophia Stewart is her name
- staticneuron, on 09/01/2008, -0/+11Oh yeah. I had my honeymoon there. It's uhh... down mainstre..... uhh..
- boombye, on 09/02/2008, -0/+11Yeah except Sophia Stewart's proof, if you can find the images, has like 2 images she said she had drawn, but they were actually artwork from the first matrix graphic novel of which the stories originally appeared on the matrix website right after the movie came out, and all the stuff was worked on by people in the comic industry...Also some Utah school paper was reporting that it was a fact, when all she got was a chance for her case to be heard in court, and she never showed up. All the websites she talks on are all run by the same production company out of Utah, and they bought a bunch of domains and post her claims on them. The websites were all different but run by the same people, some of them conspiracy sites claiming some "the white man been stealing our ideas for years" type of crap. They all had an agenda, and each site's agenda was to promote their underground music from Utah, and to promote these theories that their ideas are always stolen, and all kinds of Louis Farrakhan talking points or something like that. In fact I had emailed her to ask why she was using images from the matrix graphic novels and I got a response that was neither intelligent nor was it coherent. It was like some little kid responding to me. So yeah that whole Sophia Stewart thing, of which there are only like 2-4 pics of her, was a major waste of time, since the person never even went to court, and probably doesn't even know her pictures are being used for such purpose since it seemed to be orchestrated by an independent music label out of Utah and some Utah college students who wrote in their paper that this story was a fact when there has been no verdict proving that she is indeed the creator.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 09/01/2008, -0/+9Man I remember seeing this film in the theater, not knowing anything about it and being blown away. It made me fall in love with film noir and I would recommend not reading too much about it if this article entices you.
FYI the rooftops in Dark City are the same from the beggining from The Matrix. - DrCyclops, on 09/01/2008, -0/+9The Wachowskis got their inspiration almost entirely from Grant Morrison's "The Invisibles."
Though the word inspiration may be a bit generous. - thundercloud39, on 09/01/2008, -0/+9Yeah buddy, it's right here on google maps.

- S1ngular1ty1, on 09/02/2008, -2/+10Just buy a PS3, then you get a game system for free.
- scottsutherland, on 09/01/2008, -0/+8Excellent post - PHENOMENAL film!
- spootmonkey, on 09/01/2008, -2/+9birch25 is right, visually the wachowski bros got inspiration from Ghost in the Shell, they even used bits of the film to show studio heads what the film was going to look like.
- inactive, on 09/01/2008, -3/+10"UNARGUABLY two of the GREATEST movies ever made"
lolz - badwithcomputer, on 09/01/2008, -1/+8i was just watching dark city the other night and was blown away by how good it was- i haven't picked up a blu-ray disc in months and i think this might be my next impulse purchase.

A+++++++ Excellent torrenter would use again! - mstachiw, on 09/01/2008, -2/+8buried for title missing word "Like" A Matrix Prequel... great movie though
- PizzaCat, on 09/01/2008, -0/+6pfft, dr who was doin the matrix back in the 60's man!
- MrSalty, on 09/01/2008, -1/+7One big difference is that the theatrical version of "Dark City" is available on this release, right next to the director's cut. The fans have a choice. With Lucas, that's not the case.
- microbefox, on 09/01/2008, -1/+7Dark City was the ***** back then. I read the book and the film when it came out. This is one of the rare occasions were both the book and film were excellent. I recently bought the DVD of Dark City and noticed how similar the Matrix is to D.C. in some respect. Even after 10 years Dark City effects still live up to today's standards - Well almost.
- ProfessorRiffs, on 09/02/2008, -1/+7No, I'm sure there are plenty of other people around with no taste whatsoever.
- thePTS, on 09/01/2008, -1/+7True, the Matrix was one of the greatest cinema experiences I've ever had, and it's etched itself into history as one of the big movie classics, despite what people say after the sequels were released.
- boudey, on 09/01/2008, -3/+9Pretty much yeah.

http://209.85.141.104/search?q=cache:xscC8CKyzwQJ: ... - Asianwaste, on 09/01/2008, -3/+8Matrix better than Dark City? You crazy.
- novalux, on 09/01/2008, -1/+6The Matrix bros didn't get their inspiration from this, they were released at about the same time and The Matrix was planned for years. Dark City is an awesome movie however, can't wait to see the update.
- InfinitySnatch, on 09/02/2008, -0/+5GOTTA TIGHTEN UP THE GRAPHICS
- xJORDANx, on 09/01/2008, -1/+6Dead already. Mirror??
- mpaige, on 09/01/2008, -0/+5Two movies basically released a year apart (Dark City and The Matrix), and you think the Wachowski's got their inspiration for the Matrix from Dark City? You don't know much about movie-making timelines do you? The Matrix was probably in post-production around the time Dark City was released.
- Rapter09, on 09/01/2008, -0/+5It wasn't even that good of porn. The Zion defense and big brawl were great, but that was it, really. Big brawl wasn't even visually astounding, more technical.
- hackiavelli, on 09/02/2008, -0/+5And having read her manuscript evidence she's clearly a nutcase. Not only is it nothing like The Matrix (or The Terminator which she also says stole from her), it's almost completely incomprehensible.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Dude, the sequels were steaming piles. The first movie, on its own, was amazing...the sequels...oh god...I don't even know where to start....Horrible...just horrible.
- yomommanow, on 09/01/2008, -1/+5lol....
non HD version....
https://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4325094/Dark_City ... - trollick, on 09/01/2008, -1/+5That's some awful box art.
- OpaqueMurdock, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Art Direction in Dune > Dark City... by a small bit at least IMO. But then not much comes close to the look of Dune and it didn't have much else going for it. Dark City not only LOOKS amazing, but it is well crafted on many other levels as well. Plus it has freaking Richard O'Brien in it! : )
Sleep now! - boombye, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Well for starters, they both shared the same sets. The Matrix got to use sets from Dark City.
- InfinitySnatch, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4That's because you were 10.
