- Frei, on 12/03/2007, -1/+20Wow, you'll turn anything into a left vs right issue. But you did make me think, how many right wing artists are there? I guess since Leni Riefenstahl you guys have had a drought. Don't worry there's always the Fox news entertainment channel.
- rupertmorris, on 12/03/2007, -0/+11When I think Independant Movies, I think of David Lynch (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, etc), David Cronenberg (Naked Lunch, etc), Darren Arnovsky's Pi, and pretty much everything I've watched at Cinematheque in Vancouver in the last 6 years.
In which case, I think independant flicks are above par and healthy. Hollywood will always be hollywood movies, with hollywood stars and hollywood budgets. If anything, the barrier for entry gets lower and lower for independant filmmakers every day. Just ask my film-nerd friends, with their HDV camcorders and Mac Pro workstations.
Just sayin' - acarr, on 12/03/2007, -1/+9very small audience? You know California is the 7th largest economy in the WORLD (according to the California Department of Finance) don't you??? You also know that California has over 37 million people which is more than any other state in the country right???
Why don't you go back to sitting on your porch with your shotgun sipping moonshine and pondering creationism. - method3, on 12/03/2007, -1/+8Here are the company credits from IMDB from each of those movies:
American Beauty: http://imdb.com/title/tt0169547/companycredits
Hotel Rwanda: http://imdb.com/title/tt0395169/companycredits
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: http://imdb.com/title/tt0338013/companycredits
Requiem for a Dream: http://imdb.com/title/tt0180093/companycredits
I don't think any of these qualify as "independent" films. - petebot, on 12/03/2007, -1/+7I'm pretty sure all of those films were made by major studios.
- Sraza, on 12/03/2007, -0/+6Primer is a good one but I just 'saw' it a few months ago. Turns out it was relesed in 2004.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primer_%28film%29 - mrjit, on 12/03/2007, -1/+7Name me some fantastic indie films of late, I really don't know enough about the - for lack of better term "genre." Educate me, and diggers.
- drlha, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5This article is not about the current quality of the films themselves, but the current environment of working in Independent film which is bad.
- absurdist, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4National Socialism is to Socialism what Neo-Conservatives are to Conservatives. Don't bother trying to go down that road.
- thcobbs, on 12/03/2007, -1/+5Question is, what are we comparing these movies to?
If we're comparing them to current Hollywood productions, I'd say they're alright. - shultzy055, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3I don't know if I should consider smaller documentaries "indie" films, but here are a few small ones that are really really great:
Chalk

Darkon

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

- Dorian822, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Honestly, I feel like Hollywood came in and sort of ruined the Independent film genre. It used to be that Indie films were under the radar, unique chances to get your film made without having to deal with the corporate ***** or losing your job so someone could replace you to re-write something to their liking, nevermind being the sole writer of the film. Now something made by Warner Independent is considered and independent film. Stars, big stars, are in these films, taking all the jobs of the nameless actors trying to get their break. And worse yet, big budget films are being called "independent" when neither the production company responsible or the distributor is close to being non-affiliated to a studio. Thank you, Sundance Film Festival.
- SenorCardgage74, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2I hear the waists of space are made of lasers. Thats why aliens wear them shiny pants all the time, on account of Dockers burn right up from the lasers
- Frei, on 12/04/2007, -1/+3The nazis were very much right wing, what have you been smoking?
- dinostabOMG, on 12/03/2007, -1/+3There's also the guy who did Earthworm Jim and Sockbaby, but I haven't seen much from him lately.
- acarr, on 12/03/2007, -1/+2i am in junior high.
by "waists of space" did you mean "waste"? We covered that in first period english today. I can send you my notes. - rupertmorris, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1mrjit: Independent means different things to different people. http://www.filmsite.org/independentfilms.html gives a broad overview. Lower budget, more 'serious' and artistic films are what come to mind. Like 'Lions For Lambs' or something. Cinema as opposed to Movies.

- kaiserm1, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1The Man from Earth is a very good example in my opinion. Just finished watching it. Low budget, one location but boy, what a story!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_from_earth - endustry, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Why all the contracted words and ellipses in the description? R U assuming fans of indie flix have A.D.D.?
- LLLSecretChimp, on 12/03/2007, -4/+5Leni Riefenstahl made movies for the National Socialist German Worker Party. Hardly right-wing.
- tony23, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1In the Film industry, "Independent" means that it wasn't made by one of the major studios (or a subsidiary).
- ebiz1022, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1I definitely would rather see an indie film that any of the Hollywood blockbusters.
http://www.sannul.info - w1ldcard, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I agree with Dorian - a lot of these indie films being mentioned here have multi-million dollar budgets. I could see how the forecast is BLEAK for truly indie films like the original "El Mariachi" and the Buscemi classic "Living in Oblivion." (Check it out - it's like Rashomon on the set.)
Bottom line: if you have Eastwood, Spacey, Jim Carrey, or Tom Cruise in your movie, it's not going to have budget problems. Calling these movies "indie" is like calling Celine Dion a "singer-songwriter." - Frei, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1"grow up you idiots. I mean really, you two are just calling each other names like your in junior high"
A bit hypocritical. - pcpimpster, on 12/03/2007, -1/+1Per the quality argument: Indi films of yesterday are now feature hollywood blockbusters today. Indi films of today are youtube hits by tomorrow.

- SlowDownandFast, on 08/19/2008, -0/+0This is actually a good article with a bad title. He talks about a new world for independent filmmakers and this is actually exciting.
Before the world of high speed internet, it was very difficult for an indie filmmaker to get their film to an audience. I only hope that the internet continues to remain open to many different channels so that big names like iTunes, Amazon, netflix and blockbusters don't control all distribution.
The real key as an independent filmmaker besides telling a good story is know your audience and find them. Keep your budget under control so that you can continue to make films.

Movies like American beauty, Hotel Rwanda, Eternal Sunshine, or Requiem for a Dream... - DocGlass, on 12/03/2007, -5/+1grow up you idiots.
