- HailfireX, on 07/07/2009, -0/+13Godfather Part III might not be as good as the first two but it's still better than 90% of the crap Hollywood churns out today.
- crash331, on 07/07/2009, -2/+11Old news, he admitted this in an interview with Howard Stern a few weeks back, along with a lot of other stuff Esquire would never get out of him.
All of you who think Howard is just about ***** and midgets, listen to his interviews sometimes. The man is a master at it. - mikejafo, on 07/07/2009, -0/+9If you RTFA, it's obvious Coppola was talking about Scorsese for Godfather II, not III. Scorsese was already a famous and admired director by the time they started filming the steaming pile that became Godfather III. Nice that the professional Esquire writer dude couldn't figure that out.
- mojoe1185, on 07/07/2009, -1/+9Curiosity will get the best of you like it did me. See it, then you will be able to bitch about it like the rest of us.
- alf86, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8It's nowhere near as good as I and II. That said, I do think it is a good movie. I think if it wasn't "The Godfather Part III," it would be more appreciated. It just doesn't live up to the first two.
It's not Crystal Skulls bad, though. - Beatmiser, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6Hell, I dugg you up. The idea of waking up next to Sarah Jessica Parker without makeup drooling on the pillow makes my balls shrivel up into my body cavity.
- DarkBlueAnt, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5He recently contacted my mom to get copies of a TV puppet show my grandpa had in the 40's (Foodini the Great). That's all I have to add to this.
- sodbustin, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4What the hell was that article supposed to be? It seemed like a bunch of random, unrelated Coppola quotes.
- pr0phet491, on 07/07/2009, -3/+7I liked Crystal Skull :(
- strum40, on 07/07/2009, -4/+7Dear Mr. Coppola, if you ever remake the original I'm perfect for the role of Jack Woltz. I wake up with a horse in my bed every morning.
/s/ Matthew Broderick - psg188, on 07/07/2009, -2/+5Guys, I actually just recently saw Godfather part I&II. I've heard that part III is not near as good, I enjoyed the first two, should I watch the third one? Or would it be like sitting through Crystal Skull all over again. Thanks in advance for the advice.
- RileyCourage, on 07/07/2009, -2/+5Not even Scorsese could have saved III.
- falconear, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2What a weird article. It read like a senile baby boomer version of The Meditations by Marcus Aerelius.
- karmakanic, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2The fundamental problem was Sofia Coppola's acting. She can't. She knows she can't. She's wisely moved behind the camera since then, and that is clearly where she should say. She had a critical, central role in the script, and she couldn't carry it. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that significant amounts of dialogue had to be rewritten, just to make it less obvious that she can't act. I was glad at the end of the movie, but it's too bad it didn't happen earlier.
Replace her with someone who *can* act, and it completely transforms the movie. I leave it to you all to decide who would have been better for the role. - MadHarvey, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Her acting was merely the tip of the iceberg for me.
The biggest problem for me was how Michael's character was handled in the film. It was like a bad piece of fan fiction, where the author has no true understanding of the character and it just feels completely "wrong".
Like if Ender Wiggin was written as a bad ass space pirate, who embittered after being tricked into war enacts repayment through the plunder and pillaging of commercial space vessels with Bean as his first mate.
Arrr... I'll teach THEM how to play unfairly. Thare gates be down, all aboard mateys! - Balanced, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2It's not that bad. Some of the acting is definitely sub-par, but I think it may come off better for people like me and you that are seeing it now (I watched it a few months ago).
I think it may have come off negatively because at the time it was made (1990) it seemed like yet another 80s 'Crime Drama' movie, a niche that was pretty full. It wasn't as 'historical' as I and II were in palces.
It's not a great movie, but it's certainly watchable and entertaining. - Pxtl, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3All the talking about mutant power levels made me cringe. The script was piss.
- MeatMountain, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Its really not that bad unless you compare it to 1 and 2. Its a perfectly good movie, and worth seeing if only to cap off the series. Definitely nowhere near as terrible as Crystal Skull or Transformers or any of the awful sequels put out these days.
- WoodenAlley, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2You're absolutely right. I think the Esquire writer assumed that Coppola simply COULDN'T have suggested that he didn't want to make Part II, because hey, it's up there as one of the most respected movies in cinematic history, so he must have been talking about Part III. But Coppola, especially in the recent months, has repeatedly made it clear that he thought a sequel to The Godfather would be ridiculous and unnecessary.
- filmannex, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1The only thing good about Godfather III is the music.
- newman328, on 07/07/2009, -2/+3It still wouldn't have made up for a shoddy script.
- DarkBlueAnt, on 07/07/2009, -1/+2I never understood all the hate X-men 3 got. When you go back and watch all 3 of them, there's no major drop in quality. The only real problem I remember was the huge waste of characters.
Now the Wolverine movie... - jerryjamesstone, on 07/07/2009, -2/+3Might have been cool!
- Fleagleman, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Stanley Kubrick couldn't have saved that mess of a movie.
- Dignan666, on 07/07/2009, -1/+2If you actually read the article, his quote about wanting Scorsese to direct a Godfather sequel refers to Part 2, not part 3.
Buried. - Jackson0909, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Was it the lesser of the three? Yes, but it wasn't that bad.
- Lionhart, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1It's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be but it's not as good as the first 2. Could have done without the incest though.
- bicyclethief, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Not that bad in terms of any movie, I agree. But compared to Godfather I and II, which are some of the best films ever made?
- Leminnes, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1"It's not Crystal Skulls bad, though."
*shiver* - manbearpig1, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1I agree, but I think it's more like 99%...
- Dignan666, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1Title was written by Digg submitter, not the Esquire author.
- stlb1090, on 07/07/2009, -4/+4i love ***** and midgets!
- clherman1076, on 07/07/2009, -1/+1ho ho robin I invited interviews and I only have to do a radio show 9 days a month
- WoodenAlley, on 07/08/2009, -0/+0@Dignan666: Nope, check out the text just below the article's title:
"The 70-year-old director on meeting Gotti, wanting Scorsese to helm Godfather III..." - bicyclethief, on 07/07/2009, -5/+5God could have directed Godfather III and it would've still been a turd.
- Amadeus2490, on 07/07/2009, -2/+2I don't think a better director could have saved the third Matrix or X-men movies, either; Those were beyond repair.
- ImTheMostWapWap, on 07/07/2009, -0/+0The only thing good about Godfather III is the kindling it provides.
- FritoPendejo, on 07/07/2009, -2/+0Skip the Apocalypse garbage and check out The Conversation if you've never seen it.
- Phrea, on 07/07/2009, -7/+1Yea, and you, sir, are so succesful, you even post here !
