- lucidguru, on 03/19/2008, -0/+57Nice, a theater that hasn't totally sold out. Waiters to serve you food, live paintball, and reasonable prices... Texas is very lucky.
- mustanggt1989, on 03/19/2008, -0/+43I totally agree.
Now stay away!

P.S. You won't like our summers anyway. - apc3161, on 03/19/2008, -0/+36So if movie theaters want to stay in business they have to stop bitching about piracy and home theaters and actually innovate and offer a nice service? Go figure.
- dolphus, on 03/19/2008, -0/+33I've spent hours in this place. I love it! My favorite promotion:
They showed Domino, (of course, they serve alcohol at the Alamo!), and then took everyone to a skeet range to blow away clay pigeons. Brave souls! Get 'em riled and drunk and turn 'em loose with a shotgun! :) - mrinsanity, on 03/19/2008, -0/+25http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg219/mr_insani ...
someone explain this to me - diggB, on 03/19/2008, -0/+21I recently attended a showing of the Army of Darkness at the Alamo Drafthouse. An admission ticket bought you not just a movie, but a toy "Boom-stick" so that you, the audience, could fire darts at the screen during the movie.
Groovy. - jasonmantey, on 03/19/2008, -0/+19I love the Alamo Drafthouse. On most weekends they have an event called Master Pancake Theater -- similar to Mystery Science Theater 3000 -- where they get local comedians to come in and poke fun at the movie you are watching. They do a fantastic job, much funnier than MST3K (especially because they can use much cruder language...).
- netburnr, on 03/19/2008, -0/+19Yep, we are. I live in Austin and I love seeing shows there because you can drink there.
Get drunk, go see movie, get even more drunk, go downtown and go drinking afterwords - XedMada, on 02/16/2009, -1/+19One of my fave places in Austin. Only problem is that sometimes the waiters and people eating food can get a little distracting. Perhaps its just my ADD.
BTW, The Air Sex Championships were "*****" excellent and all should see my fav: George Bush ***** the World http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDSxTE4FrWc - p8ntslinger676, on 03/19/2008, -1/+17Reason #531 why Austin is the best city in the world.
I've lived here all my life and i don't plan on moving any time soon. - russorat, on 03/19/2008, -2/+17I've always dreamed of opening a movie theater like this. I thought of the idea for showing TV shows on the big screen (although I wasn't the first obviously). Glad to see such a place exists. Time for a road trip to Texas.
- hipsocket, on 03/19/2008, -0/+11Dugg your comment only because too many people live here to begin with. Please, keep telling everyone to stay away.
Thanks. - DrunkenSavior, on 03/19/2008, -1/+12I love that all films are '18 and up.' Sorry minors, but if it's a choice between you and liquor.....
- xrisnothing, on 03/19/2008, -2/+12make judgments about the prices you haven't seen and the experience you've not had...
- sporkey, on 03/19/2008, -1/+10I only see movies at the alamo downtown or lamar now, every other theater is just lame.
- squishee, on 03/19/2008, -1/+9I live in Seattle, and my boyfriend and I actually bought plane tickets to Austin just so we could see a screening of The Wizard at the Alamo Drafthouse...then that douche nozzle Fred Savage had to reschedule the Q&A initially planned for after the movie due to a "scheduling conflict" (come on, Kevin Arnold, we all know your day planner isn't exactly bursting with appointments), thus royally ***** us over. Our only saving grace for the entire trip was that we saw the movie, anyway, and thought that the Drafthouse was the coolest movie theater ever. They showed Legend of Zelda cartoons as movie previews, for God's sake.
- shadyrudy, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7My 2 favorite bumper stickers in Austin:
Keep Austin Weird
Don't Move Here. - skamper, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7I loved that place
- SoulDrift404, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7Step out of your suburban multiplex to remember how movie theaters USED to be. They actually used to be entertaining to attend!
Man, I'm glad i have more interesting friends than you. - VAXcat, on 03/19/2008, -0/+6 True enough - but the rest of Texas is not as neanderthal as people think - there are two Alamo Drafthouses in Houston, for example, as well as the Aurora microtheater - a theater concept I haven't seen anywhere else.
- sorensilk, on 03/19/2008, -1/+7There's a big difference between Austin and the rest of Texas. But I agree with hipsocket, keep telling people not to come here so we can enjoy it for ourselves.
- diggB, on 03/19/2008, -0/+6Shhhhhhhh! Keep it quiet! I'm not sure how much bigger Austin can get and still maintain it's Austin charm.
- ohsnapitskyle, on 03/19/2008, -1/+7And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I am proud to live in Texas.
- gerkofish, on 03/19/2008, -0/+6finally, the rest of the world recognizes the amazingness of a true Austin original: the alamo drafthouse.
- xrisnothing, on 03/19/2008, -0/+6you sir, are a massive geek. sorry, it had to be said. no, it's not an insult. it's just an observation. i live in Austin. I can't imagine flying to Seattle to go to alamo drafthouse or to see fred savage.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5Great as if SXSW didn't bring in enough tourists that never leave now it's gonna be Alamo.
- jwalske, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5I saw Grindhouse there. Priceless.
- audioscience, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5Too funny.
Considering it's a long exposure shot (notice the ghosting trails of the guy standing up on the side and the double image of the girl on the end) it was likely that guy's hand in another position during the exposure. There was likely a rear curtain flash that solidified most of the image, but the long exposure time caused the ghosting. - Dokkodo, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5It's the whole experience...it's called fun.
- Petri33, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5We have these in Houston too. Awesome theater. Especially the "Noone under 18 allowed without a parent" rule. I don't pay $8.00 a ticket to listen to some kid talk on his cell phone the whole movie.
- JGUSMC7, on 03/19/2008, -1/+6Yeah, we have one here in San Antonio, and another on the way next year. The only problem is once you break the seal it is hard to keep up with the movie. But is fun regardless.
- getrealnow, on 03/19/2008, -1/+6I live in Austin, and I go to the Lamar often. I should really explore all these events and shows, I'm missing out!
- diafygi, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4Actually, they are only 18 and up for R-rated movies (or with an actual parent). It's the 6 and up only rule for all other movies (except maybe early showings of Spy Kids or something). I am so spoiled by the 6 and up rule. Can't go to any other theater now. The "take your ass out" thing is really true, too. Just raise a card, and throw someone out.
- dougdomino, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4True story. The whole block where the Ginger Man is will be condos in not too long. I think Ginger Man is looking for another location.
- zardoz73, on 03/19/2008, -1/+5I was skeptical when I read the headline, but WOW! I worked at a movie theater in college that was nowhere near this fun. That's the kind of dream theater I'd make (and run) if I had a million or so bucks.
Innovative theater owners FTW! - jamshid, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4I was there, man, from the beginning! Saw "David Searching" during their 1997 SXSW show, before they opened. The seats weren't in, we were on folding chairs on a flat floor. And I saw the first Mr Sinus 3000: Nude on the Moon, though no, I didn't get in for free.

It is one of my favorite things about Austin, would always rather see a movie at a Drafthouse. - cerealjynx, on 03/19/2008, -2/+6Well Ain't this Cool News ... :P
- pasqualiej, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4saw Dark Side of the Rainbow there among others...great theater, great town
- sbgunn, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4Another great promotion that Diggers would love:
Occasionally they'll show all 3 Lord of the Rings movies back to back to back all day Saturday with "Hobbit meals" (first breakfast, secondbreakfast, elevenses, lunch, dinner, supper) served throughout the day. Oh, and they use the extended editions. - Bernbach, on 03/19/2008, -2/+6just for clarification - Alamo Drafthouse in Austin is different than the ones outside of Austin. The owner of the orginal few (Alamo Downtown, Lamar, Village, and Roadshow) sold his franchise rights. The ones being built in SA and other places are not likely run the same way or style. Heres to hoping they keep it as close to the orginals as possible...
- mephitix, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4I did an internship in Austin two summers ago and I could not get enough of the Alamo. They have crazy things like an Atari 2600 night, "Videoke", and lots of other cool events for new premieres. For 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' they had a chocolate fountain and tons of free candy... for "War of the Worlds" they showed cheesy sci-fi trailers from the 60s (plus a little Futurama). I had a blast there.. I live in Seattle now but I definitely want to go back.
- boredsam, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4I saw a shirt last week at SXSW, it said "Welcome to Austin, Remember to Leave".
- SoulDrift404, on 03/19/2008, -1/+4Dude, I'm from New Orleans. Your summers don't scare me.
- adikt, on 03/19/2008, -0/+3Beats NY where you have to sneak booze into the movies. I remember in college, working at a movie theater, cleaning the theaters after each and every movie and finding six packs of beer bottles full of piss.
- ImOscar, on 03/19/2008, -1/+4I believe there are only three "real" Alamo Drafthouses: South Lamar, Anderson Ln and the downtown location at the Ritz. There are more that are franchised and under different ownership. Still very cool, but not as good as the originals, as they don't the cool events nearly as often, if at all.
- fictionalOne, on 03/19/2008, -0/+3Sorry man, our Alamo Drafthouse in San Antonio doesn't compare to Austin's. Why did they have to put it in such a crappy location?
- Dokkodo, on 03/19/2008, -0/+36th Street. Never seen the riot gear, although I wouldn't be surprised with how freakin' crazy it gets.
PS. There are way cooler places than 6th Street. - brufleth, on 03/19/2008, -0/+3I know right? You'd think the concept of changing your business model over the course of a century was completely out of the question. "Oh we can't make money because of piracy blah blah blah." When our great grand parents were going to movie theaters much like we have today it really starts to look like they've avoided innovating as much as possible. They added color and sound. Great, but you you've been able to get that at home for a generation now. Give people a reason to go to a movie theater instead of staying in and maybe they will.
- glasnostic, on 03/19/2008, -0/+3we have one in San Antonio too (fitting since this is where the Alamo is) and we are about to get a second one, though ours don't quite have the celebrity draw that Austin's does.
- ImOscar, on 03/19/2008, -0/+3The food is quite reasonably priced and the meals are great, especially the pizzas. You can get a meal for the same price as a box of candy and a drink at other theaters. You sound like someone who would complain about how much things cost "back in my day"
