Confirmed: Christian Bale to Star in Terminator 4

news.yahoo.com — Christian Bale is in negotiations to star in "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins," the fourth installment of the hit science fiction series. "T4's" story, by David Campbell Wilson, John Brancato and Michael Ferris, focuses on John Connor, now in his 30s, as he leads what is left of the human race against the machines.

He was 13 in Empire of the Sun, but you could already see he was going to be a star. For some reason, this performance is passed over anytime people talk about great acting performances by a kid.

      For the record, I liked T1, T2 got on my nerves a little even though it was a summer blockbuster, and I loved T3.

As in, for most of the movie no one is really sure who is who, and trying to figure that out in the middle of an all out war.

After Rescue Dawn, Batman Begins, and The Prestige, it's hard to find any other actor with so many starring roles in excellent movies in such a short time span. He turned a derivative script into a stellar performance in Equilibrium. He played the most complex of characters in American Psycho. He returned Batman to glory. What more could you ask for?

    Having said that, T4 will be tough to do right. The actual war has always been this mythical unknown in the other movies, something huge and nightmarish. If they don't depict it well, it will ruin what we have been imagining all these years.

I think it's interesting that T1 (which was awesome) came out in the the cold war, when everyone was reading Tom Clancy and watching movies like T1 and War Games while wondering when (not if) some douchebag was going to trigger armageddon. T2 comes right after the end of the cold war, and has the optimistic "maybe everything's gonna be all right after all" ending. Then T3 comes out after 9/11 and right as we're invading Iraq, and that's when the filmmakers decide to blow up the world.
      Anyway, I think T4 will kick ass.

While he would make a great Terminator Bale is fantastic when portraying characters with a lot of inner turmoil. Playing a John Connor who has to come to terms with knowingly sending people to their death in order to win the war fits Bale better than playing a cold ruthless Terminator would.
