I thought that the splashdown was the monster itself falling to Earth. I figured that the reason the bombing didn't work was because it's skin was strong enough to survive entry into Earth's atmosphere...
Regardless, any movie that I'm still thinking about four days after seeing it was worth my $8.50. - shahruz84, on 12/17/2008, -0/+66for the audioclip played both backwards and forwards: http://cloverfieldmessage.ytmnd.com/
- blackbeardtron, on 01/22/2008, -4/+69I totally missed that. It makes me wonder how much more interesting stuff is hidden and sprinkled throughout the movie. Gotta love JJ Abrams.
- DaDrake, on 01/22/2008, -11/+63I thought it was Rosie O'Donnell. After seeing the movie, I realized the monster wasn't quite as scary as she is.
- zzzpoohzzz, on 01/22/2008, -2/+48calling people nerds on digg is pointless. i would imagine lots of us here consider ourselves nerds and actually embrace it.. just makes you look like an idiot and childish
- BattleScars, on 01/22/2008, -0/+41Dude, even if a 200ft tall column of water erupted from the sea and caused a mini tidal wave near where I live, I'd still be pretty bloody surprised if a freakin' monster emerged a month later and attacked. You make it sound like this kind of thing happens every day.
- LogicBomB, on 01/22/2008, -1/+40It still boggles my mind that people didn't like this movie.
I honestly think people were hyped up for a spoon-fed, regularly-shot film that profiled the monster's past, present and future (or ending).
This movie was supposed to be everything you saw on the screen. If you were disapointed you had no idea what they were trying to do. It was a "surviving a monster attack" movie, not a "stopping the monster" movie. I think it did a ***** excellent job. - inactive, on 01/22/2008, -1/+35Agreed. I wasn't expecting much because I've always enjoyed Japanese monster movies and after the '98 Godzilla film I was convinced that making a decent monster movie was something that American studios just couldn't do any more. However, I totally enjoyed Cloverfield. I appreciate that the producers respected their audience enough that they didn't feel like they had to spoon feed us the back story on the monster. I know that it's going to be fun speculating about the monster until the sequel comes out in a couple of years. I'll be there on opening night.
- LogicBomB, on 01/22/2008, -0/+31As a guy who majored in marketing, let me help:
They wanted you to be free that day.
The end. - inactive, on 01/22/2008, -6/+34Sequel Please...
- jotate, on 01/22/2008, -5/+32Maybe one of you will come up with the answer to my query.
My biggest issue with Cloverfield was that all the viral marketing (the myspace pages, the news feeds, the random character webpages) emphasized that all this ***** was happening on 1/18/2008, the day the movie released. But in the film, they specifically talk about how it's May.
In one of the scenes, I'm fairly certain Rob said it was Saturday May 23rd, which means it's not even 2008 (2009 is the closest year that matches that).
Did someone just drop the ball on lining all this ***** up or are they going to some how bring it all together? - Konrad9, on 01/22/2008, -0/+25The 1-18-08 thing was so they could advertise the movie and not give out the title of it.
Also. NYC is ass-***** cold in January, so good luck having people outside that long after running away from a party. - KMartSheriff, on 01/22/2008, -1/+25"That plus a nauseauting camera shake for the entire movie"
What the hell were you expecting? It's a monster movie that was made to look like it was filmed on a handycam. That's like saying you don't like Speed Racer because it has too much racing in it. - macaddct1984, on 01/22/2008, -0/+22I think that's one of the unique and interesting things about it, the fact that it doesn't tie things up into a nice little package.
Although my friend commented after the movie, "You know it was made by J.J. Abrams because they didn't explain anything." - c0ldfusi0n, on 01/22/2008, -0/+22The numbers are bad.
- babygodzilla, on 01/22/2008, -2/+24perhaps the video itself is being watched on 1-18-2008, by... us... after all, the video was found by the government and is now government property. perhaps 1-18-2008 is the first time ever it is being reviewed by "someone," none other than you and me and everyone else of course.
- Daedalus81, on 01/22/2008, -2/+23I hate how everyone has to be spoon-fed the details. Use your damned imagination for once.
- cosmotron, on 01/22/2008, -0/+20J.J. Abrams said it was a satellite and not an alien. Check the IMDB Cloverfield FAQs.
- TheNik, on 01/22/2008, -1/+20Am I the only one that didn't mind the hand-held effect? After about 2 minutes I didn't even notice it.
- bigbadgoat, on 01/22/2008, -0/+16I prefer geek.
- pnmoore, on 01/22/2008, -0/+15The fact that people ARE obsessed with the left out backstory IS proof that the movie worked!
- sobriquet, on 01/22/2008, -0/+15I was of the idea that some little spore attached to the satellite, explaining why it took a month to surface (it was growing).
- CColtManM, on 01/22/2008, -3/+18That's why i love the fact that none of you bashers have to go see it. I liked it, my GF liked it. It was original. So BW did something like it, this isn't an indie film, thank god.
- Kev585, on 01/22/2008, -1/+14No symbolism, metaphor, or allegory. They choose that simply for the visual of the statue's head rolling down the street and it made a great clip to use in the trailer.
- jlawson1, on 01/22/2008, -0/+13lol, watch a movie shot with hand held camera filmed with a hand held camera...double my dose of Dramamine...lol
- doctechnical, on 01/22/2008, -0/+12History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of men.
- thestaton, on 01/22/2008, -0/+12Should have used Napalm. If it can stick to kids, it can stick to it and it's lill flesh eating off spring.
- Jordan117, on 01/22/2008, -2/+13MEGASPOILER:
After the credits, you can hear a static-y, whispering voice talking on a radio. People recorded the audio and reversed it -- the voice says "It's still alive...".
o_O - seldon452, on 01/22/2008, -0/+11$10.50 for me. ***** you AMC. But still worth it.
- nonymous666, on 01/22/2008, -0/+10What do you mean "ignored"? Nobody saw it. Rob's camera was aimed at it and caught it, but Rob and Beth weren't paying attention.
- Duositex, on 01/22/2008, -2/+12What could a sequel POSSIBLY do to improve this? Seriously now. Doesn't anyone remember what happened when the mysterious star of the movie "Tremors" was made into sequels? What about Blair Witch? Why can't people just let this movie die a quiet death..
- cyberwiz01, on 01/22/2008, -0/+10A 'sequel' of the same event from a different point of view would be pretty awesome. It would also probably give us a bit more info on the Monster and it's capabilities/backstory. I would be more than happy to see a sequel of this movie.
- juckman, on 01/22/2008, -0/+9No, quite frankly, your comment is extremely confusing. He thinks the monster came from outer space (last scene of movie), monster must have strong skin to survive the entry to Earth, explains why bombs don't hurt it (during movie). I don't see how that's confusing at all.
- ivanisavich, on 01/22/2008, -0/+9Yea yea!! And when everybody was running around on the streets I distinctly heard someone yell out "George Bush doesn't care about black people!!!"....
....seriously though. STFU you conspiracy theorists. - LogicBomB, on 01/22/2008, -1/+10That's honestly like complaining that there was too much gore in the recent horror films. If you have motion sickness problems you don't see films like this. If you have a problem with gore you don't see horror movies.
It's not ***** rocket science. Just because those who have motion problems would have preferred something they can tolerate does not mean the movie was any less spectacular. - timusca, on 01/22/2008, -0/+9But buried for not knowing how to use the word "touché".
- zzzpoohzzz, on 01/22/2008, -1/+10more cowbell?
- BattleScars, on 01/22/2008, -0/+8So basically they criticised it for NOT being a predictable Godzilla rip-off.
- merreborn, on 01/22/2008, -0/+8All the viral marketing stuff used 1-18-08 as the date because beating the opening date into your head is a primary goal of marketing a film.
- nymphetamine, on 01/22/2008, -0/+7I find card51short's comment rather shallow and pedantic.
- Centorio, on 01/22/2008, -2/+9No, Cloverfield did not suck. At least not in my opinion. I find that people ether love it or hate it, not many in between. So if you want to go on a thrill ride (Shaky cam and all) then you will probably love this. But if you want a Transformers meets Godzilla type movie, you're gonna wanna stay away from this one.
- tendonut, on 01/22/2008, -0/+7Don't worry. We will be ruling his life soon enough. Also probably ***** his girlfriend who realize that smart people typically live better lives than the star of the high school football team.
- KMartSheriff, on 01/22/2008, -1/+8Go watch it again. It's pretty obvious something small fell into the water
- mwalker05, on 01/22/2008, -2/+9if there were anything else the movie that pointed to metaphors, symbolism, foreshadowing, even a moral, hypothesis, or point, i would agree. but since this movie was just about on par with the Tranformers movie as far as depth, i would say its more like they thought it would look cool to swat the head of the statue of liberty.
- spidoman, on 01/22/2008, -1/+8Dugg for knowing how to do an accent. 20 years on a computer and I still couldn't remember how to do it to save my life.
- Trout9000, on 01/22/2008, -1/+8as will i. all the speculation and the stuff left unsaid is what makes this movie amazing.
- inactive, on 01/22/2008, -1/+8wat
- Konrad9, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6I saw it twice and missed it both times (even though I was like "WHERE'S THE SPLASH" the second time through) so don't feel too bad.
- Arth718, on 01/22/2008, -0/+6Lol this is a little bit abstract but did anyone else think antlions from HL2 when those spiders fell from it?
- octoquake, on 01/22/2008, -0/+5im pretty sure a lot of the viral stuff was linked to the movie only in concept. they had no direct tie in to any of the movie i dont think. its either simply hype material, or its a clue about the next one. if it came round circle like that id be so happy.
