Can the Power of Gum Stop Uwe Boll?
shacknews.com — To prevent infamous director Uwe Boll from creating more video game-based films, the makers of Stride gum today announced that it will provide free packs of gum to those who sign the Stop Uwe Boll internet petition, provided that it reaches a million signatures.

- WNW3, on 05/08/2008, -0/+10Done...but it almost makes me feel bad for ole' Uwe. He doesn't seem like a bad guy, he just makes terrible movies. I think he needs some career counciling. Teach him how to drive a crane or something.
- krogothwolf, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Have you seen or read any of the interviews done on him? I pray not as he is a douche bag...plain and simple...douche bag!
- WNW3, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Well yeah, but it's a sad defensive douchbaggery. We are all pretty mean to him and he doesn't know how to take it so he lashes out right back. I think if he found something to be good at, like teaching remedial reading to adults, we could all be friends. How can you say no to that smile!
- tjmb9, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Let's assume he's moderately intelligent. That means he has considered his movies and their impact. He must realize that he shows no respect for the games he adapts. That means he has no respect for them, either. Douche bag.
- WNW3, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I was going to write a response to this...then I realized who I was defending and decided I didn't want to play devil's advocate anymore. That said, if he quits directing I would pay him to do odd jobs around the house.
- AzureRise, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Like this. NO. Inviting a critic over for a publicity stunt "boxing match" assuring him it's all a joke and then knocking him the ***** out is douchebaggery to the max.

- failedpimp, on 05/08/2008, -1/+29If he was a good director he would get good scripts to work with. Oh and he also writes most of the stuff he does.
- Gir53457, on 05/08/2008, -0/+7Shouldn't he already have a script if it's based off a video game? Does he actually play games or does he just get a summary and make what he thinks the game is about?

- PyroRaver, on 05/08/2008, -4/+4Uwe Boll didn't direct Doom. I actually went to see it the weekend it came out, it was pretty good.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419706/- angito, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4WTF, that movie was horrible. The only thing it had in common with the story of Doom was that it was on Mars.

- ApokalypseNow, on 05/08/2008, -1/+7Just bad scripts? The man wrote the script for his own Postal movie, which is rapidly sinking to the bottom of the charts and hasn't even opened in the US!
- PacmanMafia, on 05/08/2008, -0/+0The only innovative thing that I thought of while watching his movies was how to kill myself.
- SquigglyP, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1the first 20 minutes of Alone in teh dark is actually pretty hilarious. The rest made me want to bite my tongue off, tho...

- DalamarArgent, on 05/08/2008, -0/+32Because he has raped every game property he has had his hands on.
- Creampuffs, on 05/08/2008, -8/+3What the ***** happened to my sarcasm tag?!?!

- RobotLeAwesome, on 05/08/2008, -5/+116It's official: I now love Stride gum.
- SnuKs, on 05/08/2008, -0/+13Exactly what they want to hear. Their PR Firm and Marketing Division needs a RAISE!
- mediaphile, on 05/08/2008, -0/+6I don't mind PR and Marketing when it's doing something useful. Xbox360s for children's hospitals? Sure. Stopping Uwe Boll? Even better.
- SnuKs, on 05/08/2008, -0/+13Exactly what they want to hear. Their PR Firm and Marketing Division needs a RAISE!
- ChaserHimself, on 05/08/2008, -33/+7The guy obviously loves what he does, so why stop him from doing it? It's not like he is raping anyone's childhood because he made a ***** version of BloodRayne.
- GrammerPants, on 05/08/2008, -4/+4The problem occurs when a game company sells him the rights to a game we actually liked.
- Scrappy1850, on 05/08/2008, -1/+3far cry?
- dynelol, on 05/08/2008, -5/+1So you're MADE to watch it?
- MiDri, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5No, but he does make it harder to get a good version of the film made...
- dynelol, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Most video games don't have enough there to make a truly great film.
- mediaphile, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1@dynelol: A good writer and director don't need pre-existing content to make a good story and film.
- MiDri, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5No, but he does make it harder to get a good version of the film made...
- macweirdo42, on 05/08/2008, -1/+3It's not JUST that he makes ***** movies... It's that I had to suffer through one of his ***** movies
- dynelol, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1You go ahead and explain how you HAD to.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 05/08/2008, -1/+4Uwe Boll was standing there... and he had a gun.
- macweirdo42, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3No, he just threatened to box me if I didn't.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 05/08/2008, -1/+4Uwe Boll was standing there... and he had a gun.
- dynelol, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1You go ahead and explain how you HAD to.
- dnl2ba, on 05/08/2008, -0/+10He's subsidized by German taxpayers, so they're paying for his crap whether they like it or not. Though arguably... paying without watching may be a better experience than paying AND watching...
- mediaphile, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1They pay, but if the movie loses money (which every single one of his movies has, usually most of the budget), the investors get to write off 100% of the investment. So instead of going to their countrymen, the $20m goes towards nobody seeing his ***** films. When Uwe Boll makes a film, his countrymen, and the world in general, lose out.
- xenoc1de, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1My childhood, has anyone seen it?
- SquigglyP, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Alone in the Dark could have been a really awesome movie. The film he made had pretty much zero relation to the game, aside from the fact that they shared the same name. Far Cry hasn't been released yet, but it will no doubt be a disaster, and that had a lot of potential to make a really interesting film. Boll's plots are nothing more than excuses to get characters into situations where they have to fight or kill stuff.
That said, I wouldn't care at all if the ***** was just making movies of his own. He's found a nice little niche, tho, where he can just make some ***** movie and rake in the cash from the fans of the games who are somehow ignorant of his horrible track record - or who seem to hold out hope that the next Boll film will actually be decent. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is looking at how his films perform and saying "*****, games based on video games won't make us much money, we can just assign some retarded monkey to write the script and a non-retarded monkey to direct it with some c-grade actors to take the lead ro,es and rake in a couple hundred percent profit". The rest of the industry is not doing much better, because Boll has demonstrated that an utterly ***** film, when marketed correctly and when it resides in this niche market, can make a profit.
One thing I can say in Boll's favor... He's consistent...
...ly bad.
- GrammerPants, on 05/08/2008, -4/+4The problem occurs when a game company sells him the rights to a game we actually liked.
- over900000, on 05/08/2008, -12/+5Internet petitions don't even do anything.
- shyboy2008, on 05/08/2008, -5/+4JERICHO?
- Xproject01, on 05/08/2008, -0/+18Well petitions maybe not... but we sure can rickroll the NY Mets
- Creampuffs, on 05/08/2008, -3/+0resident evil for the psp?
- Scrappy1850, on 05/08/2008, -3/+4did the mets rick roll themselves?
- DalamarArgent, on 05/08/2008, -1/+8That professional feces crafter personally said that he would stop making game movies if it reached 1 mil signatures, although he is probably lying... again, hopefully he just takes his passion for crashing and burning to some other medium, like base-jumping or rally racing.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4they get you free gum
- drachemorder, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2They do when Uwe Boll himself said he'd stop making movies if there were 1,000,000 signatures on a petition.

- twiztidsinz, on 05/08/2008, -3/+15How are they going to get you your free gum if the petition hits 1mill?
Stride Gum sends out a mass email asking for addresses? o.O
Mass email with coupon for free gum?- coheedcollapse, on 05/08/2008, -0/+11They'll probably just put the coupon up for download and print and limit it to a few days. It says in the news article that it's going to be an internet coupon, so they won't need anything but your email address.
- jordanmerle, on 05/08/2008, -1/+148He should make a Wii Sports movie.

- AmICoolNow, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Or a Dance Dance Revolution movie.
- MasterGrief, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1No matter how you shake it, there's gonna be a LOT of violence.
- Erythroxylum, on 05/08/2008, -0/+16Apparently - and this maybe weapons-grade ***** - if you box him and win, he'll agree to stop making film adaptations of videogames. So, someone needs to get in the ring and stove his silly German face in. Bear in mind, they'd have to be an accomplished fighter, because he's meant to be quite hard. Maybe put horseshoes in your gloves or whathaveyou.
- Erythroxylum, on 05/08/2008, -2/+4Actually, I've just read his wiki blurb, and it turns out he's ideologically of the same vein as PETA (maybe so far as being a member), so scrap the boxing glove with horse shoe in it. Take a knife instead. A dull one.
- jnava121, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2kimbo slice will make him nice
- rot13ubercrypto, on 05/08/2008, -0/+12Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka of somethingawful.com tried that a while ago after Boll challenged him. The difference was that Boll takes boxing pretty seriously and kicked the guy's ass...something awful.

- mxmj, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3There has got to be a Golden Gloves kid or something who likes video games that would do it, if not just for the publicity.
- AzureRise, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Just for the "publicity"? Last time someone did it just for the publicity they got KOd.
- mxmj, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Well, I've never heard of his challenge or the previous fight until now, so it must not have been publicized well.
- AzureRise, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Just for the "publicity"? Last time someone did it just for the publicity they got KOd.
- jordanmerle, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Micky from Snatch could do the job.
- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6He boxed five of his critics, and won all five matches by decision. Then Seanbaby from G4 challenged him. Uwe Boll was interested initially, until he learned that Seanbaby trains in Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu, at which point he became suddenly unavailable.
- Metasquares, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1That sounds like it would make a great movie.
- Harlequin0, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2I'd be happy to do it! Except I'm a complete nobody from the RAAF, limiting my opportunities to walking up to him in the street when I get some leave (Have to stalk him, first!) and thumping him in the face a few times.
It'd almost be worth it.
- Erythroxylum, on 05/08/2008, -2/+4Actually, I've just read his wiki blurb, and it turns out he's ideologically of the same vein as PETA (maybe so far as being a member), so scrap the boxing glove with horse shoe in it. Take a knife instead. A dull one.

Anyways I still don't blame Uwe Boll for his crappy videogame movies, this just in videogames have crappy stories. Even GTA 4 which has a pretty deep and entertaining story... would be a steaming pile of crap on the big screen. Why people even care about this is beyond me, just stop watching his movies and he can stop laughing his way to the bank. This petition isn't going to accomplish a thing.

- EricAnderton, on 05/08/2008, -7/+1Um, 1/4 of the way to *what*, exactly?
- Tyorant, on 05/08/2008, -1/+5Great. Uwe consistently bites off more than he chew with his films, and now it's crunch time.

- Jambi, on 05/08/2008, -9/+10No it can't. But shooting him can. I'm sure that at least one person reading this post is a mentally disturbed nutjob who wouldn't mind bumping off a public figure for fame. Come on, I know you're out there...do it for the good of humanity, before he ends up directing the World of Warcraft movie or something that might actually have a chance of being a hit! (if Transformers can make it, pretty much any old crap can top the charts with some hype)
- Modestexcuse, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1*Transformers was hardly a hit

Please sign it! - LogicBomB, on 05/08/2008, -1/+4I'm still unsure how people hire him for new movies... Video game movies are a huge risk in the first place, why hire someone renouned for doing them poorly?
The only answer I can think of is that the people hiring only see his history in making video game movies and not whether or not they were well received...- freelancer46, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2I think he just buys the rights and ***** all over them
- roflbrothel, on 05/08/2008, -1/+17Uwe Boll is pure ***** fail. He's not going to stop making ***** movies no matter how many people sign this.
- Netik09, on 05/08/2008, -2/+4That's just cheating.
- FearFactory, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1For a second there I thought he was going to make a movie for the NES game Strider.
- xsquirrel378x, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1it was an arcade smash and best known on sega genesis for the console. who calls strider an nes game?
- blahtastic, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2Someone who had an NES as a kid and not a genesis, most likely.
- xsquirrel378x, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1it was an arcade smash and best known on sega genesis for the console. who calls strider an nes game?
- gossipninja, on 05/08/2008, -1/+5I have always wondered how after all his early flops, he kept getting work. I do think on a personal level hes funny and engaging, He is always amusing in all his interviews. I do hold out hope for postal, as the previews look entertaining but giving him the reigns to every video game franchise (like far cry) seems kind of short sighted on hollywoods part.
- employeeno5, on 05/08/2008, -10/+8Uwe Boll is genius. You're all on the wrong end of the joke. He's the Andy Kaufman of film making.
- RadioSilence, on 05/08/2008, -2/+4I agree completely.
- Wonderama, on 05/08/2008, -4/+0Insert additional meta-ironic comment here.
- mxmj, on 05/08/2008, -1/+2Wouldn't that be great. On his deathbed he releases a documentary about all this and good versions of all the films.
- Lemm, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1obvious troll is obvious. buried.
- RadioSilence, on 05/08/2008, -2/+4I agree completely.
- ibeetle, on 05/08/2008, -1/+6This is bogus. Stride has no information on their website about any such petition or promotion. The links provided do not link to anything having to do with Stride or its parent company Cadbury Adams.
This is just guy who wants you to sign his petition. Do you really thing major multi-million dollar international company would use petition.com?- D14BL0, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Yes.
- mxmj, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1I can't say anything about the first part, but the petition has been up for a while. They wouldn't want to throw away 1/4 million signatures would they?
- mustache, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Apparently there was a press release. A lot of outlets are picking this up. So I assume it's valid.

But it is kind of fun making reactionary posts about something you believe to be untrue without taking the minute or so it would to do a simple search and confirm it.- tomis, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Proving nothing, the parent post still stands. Where's the link to the press release at stridegum.com or their parent company? Without that, your three links might as well be three sites which all fell for a fake press release.
- tomis, on 05/08/2008, -2/+2You only need to cite sources when you're relaying stories based in reality...
- imakeholesinu, on 05/08/2008, -2/+5I signed, because Uwe Boll will never take 90 minutes of my life, or my children's lives away.
- rlvis, on 05/08/2008, -3/+8If you are stupid enough to pay to see a movie based on a video game then you get what Uwe deserve.
- CommissarVlad, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1Signed for great justice..
- iunno666, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Take off every ZIG.
- Hero0fTime, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1Yes we can!
- Kumaku, on 05/08/2008, -2/+4As a side note. Stride gum is awesome. It is ridiculous how long it lasts. And if you leave it in a cup holder during a warm day, it will fill your car with the aroma of winterfreshness.
- mustache, on 05/08/2008, -1/+4Just wondering.. How much do you get paid as a marketing rep for Stride gum?
- Ocelot13, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2about tree fiddy
- mrhedges, on 05/09/2008, -0/+0Yeah, because it's overpacked with flavoring. As soon as you remove the plastic wrapper, you can smell it. Avoid the fruit flavored gum; it smells like air freshner. Also, if you enjoy aspartame, this gum is perfect for you!

- greeniemeani, on 05/08/2008, -0/+8In The Name of The King: A Dungeon Siege Tale is just so ***** horrible. Ray Liotta's character was so horribly acted...
Oh and I don't feel like posting a video link from that movie that is really a rickroll, so if you are interested just rickroll yourself.- rlvis, on 05/08/2008, -2/+1The acting was horrible because the actor was Ray Liotta.
- Darksoul, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Ray Liotta isn't a bad actor I suggest you go pick up Goodfellas or Unforgettable he was also in Field Of Dreams, he also did the voice in GTA: Vice City he did Tommy Vercetti. I don't what he was thinking when he did that movie for Uwe Bowl but everybody makes mistakes. Next time read his bio instead of opening your mouth and saying ***** you don't know.
- danwallace, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Or maybe he just doesn't like any of those movies.

- liquisoft, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4I hope I'm never hated by so many in my lifetime as Uwe Boll.

http://maulnet.sevasjack.info/ - Schmapdi, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3Actually I had it explained to me at one point on the AV club how Uwe Boll is allowed to keep making films. Basically its a scam and the movies are made knowing they'll fail, and german investors get rich off it. I'll have to see if I can find the link.

There, read that - its why Uwe Boll gets to keep making films. - LargeTrout, on 05/08/2008, -1/+4The signature amount has hardly moved since this was last on Digg. Disappointing.
- makes, on 05/08/2008, -0/+0252k so far, this stride thing should help
- str3ama, on 05/08/2008, -0/+14I've seen Porn Films with better character development and plot structure then any of these cinematic abortions by Uwe Boll.

- SealandRes1, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Don't be so bitter, I hear they're giving away sweet gum if you sign the petition.

- JBravada, on 05/08/2008, -1/+4I don't get what the big buzz is, some marketing agency is latching their client's brand onto a pop trend-- Dr. Pepper, now this. The point is, Stride gum has always, and will always taste like shoelaces.
- redxxx, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1"Stride gum has always, and will always taste like shoelaces."
At least their ads don't lie. It's not like they say the flavor is good, just that it lasts for freaking ever.- h4mx0r, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Mmm, shoelaces...
