- smoothmedia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+62CGI? I'll have to look that term up in my Toban Spirit Guide.
- BassMastr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+63I would be a lot more excited if it wasn't CGI. I still have bitter taste in my mouth after the second one. The first one was awesome.
- anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -14/+60"WHO ARE YOU GOING TO CALL???"
Somebody to fix your ***** caps lock key. - Toshibi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37Ghostbusters was my favorite movie as a kid. I wanted to be a Scientist so bad after that movie just so I could hopefully get the chance to say "Back off man, I'm a scientist." It's a silly reason to set a goal...but it's what made me decide to major in Physics and Astronomy. Still not a scientist...so, instead....
Anytime anyone ever asks me if I'm a God, I say "Yes!" - cwalk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43@BassMastr
"bitter taste in my mouth after the second one"? The second film was nothing short of awesome. In fact IMHO, it was much better than the first. Using the NES Advanced Controller to control the Statue of Liberty is classic anyway you look at it. Of course me being five when it was released may have had something to do with my viewpoint... - HeatVision, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34True, I think everyone would prefer a live action, but Murray won't do it.
The good/suck component of CGI, like most films, lies with the director.
Imagine if they got Brad Bird on a project like this. - HeatVision, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Don't know why Murray won't come back, but I once read he was pretty disappointed with how Ghostbusters 2 turned out and thought unless they could top the first film, there was no point in doing a third one.
Brad Bird wrote and directed Pixar's "The Incredibles". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Because he's old?
- kravex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25@Lavahot
Yeah being Oscar nominated for best actor in Lost in Translation must have really pissed him off. - WolfDV, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I really hope it doesn't suck . . please god don't let it suck
- Mark_DeRidder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25yes, it's easy to say this is doomed from the begining, but I think they can make it work if they do the fallowing:
-match the desaturated look of the original... make it feel like a CG 80's movie
-Be careful with mo-cap. I don't want a Polar Express GB movie. If they have to mo-cap... get Wetta to do it.
-Have Ivan Riteman co-direct (with Brad Bird of course!)
-Use a lot of Elmer Bernstein music!! Unfortunately he has passed away, but GBII was seriously lacking this componenet. Find someone to match that sound.
-Lots of paranormal geek speek from Ray Stanz
-Keep the chotchkee, thrown together look of the gadgets and gear. Please don't design anything "slick" and futuristic". These guys are a struggling mom and pop shop business, they can't afford "nice" designs for their equipment. The look of the gear in the first movie was awesome... keep it that way.
-GB I was about going into business for the first time. Make sure there is a simple subplot for people to relate to.
-Don't feel the need to have a huge monster walking down a New York street for a climax like Stay Puff and Liberty. Try something new here.
-Have someone re-write Aykroyds script (like Harold Ramis and Ivan Riteman). Aykroyds first GB script was cool with all that time travel, but I much prefer the down to earth verson they used for the actual movie.
-Don't let Hollywood get their fingerprints all over this, and DON'T let Michael Bay direct, or Bruchheimer produce.
-Keep the humor dry and visual.
This really could be a great movie if done right.
-Mark - davehendrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19I think Murray won't do a live action because there is too much slime!
- truebullfan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20I thought Ghostbusters II was great
- gioma1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14"Any idea why Murray won't do live action?"
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Murray#Trivia
"Murray is said to have a policy of not doing a third version of anything, which is one of the reasons Ghostbusters III has been reported to be in development hell, but his filmography would also seem to suggest that he has not been offered a third version of anything besides Ghostbusters."
http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul - lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Part of the three?? There were FOUR!
Or maybe you just discriminate against people who wear glasses, Egon Spengler was a person too! - userundefine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Why would he be unhappy? Ghostbusters I rocked, Ghostbusters II rocked.
- jakatak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11If Murray won't do a third version of anything then tell him to get cracking on Scrooged again, Stripes returns, and Meatballs "The Second Helping"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Why CGI? They're not that old. Hell, they did all those Star Trek movies when Deforest Kelly was in a nursing home!
- BassMastr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@Heatvison
Ooo he did that...yes then I would very much like to see him do this. Thanks for the info. - krakkinem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@gioma1
So that means Garfield 3 isn't going to happen??? DARN! Bill Murray has too much integrity! - lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Every few months some reporter comes along and says "GHOSTBUSTERS 3 CONFIRMED!!!!", and I think "Oh no, not again".
I was expecting to see "Confirmed that Harold Ramis and Ben Stiller are on board, along with Jack Black and (insert someone else here)".
I wasn't expecting to hear this from Dan himself though.
Dan: "Ghostbusters 3 lives! It lives today! Last year it didn't, this year it lives! With CGI animation and the way these cartoons are done, we can just do everything that I ever wrote in that script for much less money". - BassMastr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Any idea why Murray won't do live action?
I'm not a big movie buff, so I don't think I'm familar with any Brad Bird's work. - EdgeNinjaX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10The second Ghostbusters movie was nowhere near as great as the first one, but it was still good. But a CGI movie? Ugh! And I thought I felt nautious when I heard the next Ninja Turtles movie was gonna be in CGI.
- tomakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Looks like he is a director of The Simpsons, among other things.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brad_Bird - aaarrrgh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Who needs another Ghostbusters movie when you have this!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnhGJn13LwE - smashx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5we came, we saw, WE KICKED ITS ASS!
- isage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If the humans are CGI, will Slimer played by a real ghost this time?
- xrisnothing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I would be too. CGI ghostbusters seems like something that should go straight to DVD. Live action means realism, but then these guys are going out and hunting ghosts. A CGI ghostbusters is just a freaking cartoon. Sorry, but this is lame and I'm severely disappointed. Aykroyd should pull his head out of his ass, because ending the series with CGI is a disservice to it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"I still have bitter taste in my mouth after the second one."
The second movie was not bad... - guyver8400, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://digg.com/movies/CONFIRMED_Ghostbusters_3_Aykroyd_and_Murray_on_board
http://digg.com/gaming_news/NEW_Dan_Aykroyd_lets_slip_that_there_IS_a_new_Ghostbusters_video_game
Are these the same. An all CGI movie could be considered a video game - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Won't do a third version of anything? But a second version is okay? If you're gonna do a trilogy, make it big, make it live action, make it right - and let it go down in history. Doing a third version in CGI will simply ruin what could have turned into a nice full three-part epic.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Any why not?
Ghostbusters the musicale would kick ass. - Hypermarkalan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Mark
I think the key thing you identified was that the first one worked so well because of the amalgamation of Akyroyd's and Ramis/Reitman's script. Dan had the sci/fi and horror aspect, and Ramis and Reitman supplied the humanity. The comedy came from the interaction of those four normal, blue-collar guys and the paranormal. It was a golden script. Unfortunately, the second was all about the funny, and it seemed forced.
You're also right in saying that we need something to relate to. What would work would be if the GBs had been working for years and years just catching the slimers and class-2 repeaters, nothing big, just nuisance ghosts. They're all old now, tired, and obviously in worse shape than when they started. Then enter Dan's script where Spengler builds an interdimensional phase system and they discover this "Manhellton."
It could be really good.
Hell, it was really cool just hearing Dan talk about it. I say we all start hounding "Billy." He can take a break from his serious movies and do something like this. (BTW, totally excellent name)
-Mark - insomniac8400, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you want live action ghostbuster this film is pretty good:
Freddy Vs. Ghostbusters

Looks like they are making a follow up:
http://www.braxtanfilm.com/ghostbusters.html - Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Entirely in CG? I'm a 3D animator by trade, but jeez, I think I just died a little inside. :(
I hope it doesn't look as ridiculous and "comical" as the new Ninja Turtles movie. - ArtMonkeyWorld, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Thank you for posting as a new topic! I am new here, and wasn't sure it that would be appropriate, or if I should keep it in the same thread! I have a very good feeling about this. Call it fate, call it luck, call it Karma, I believe everything happens for a reason. : ) And I have never wanted to do designs for a movie more in my life!
- Iceduck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I don't hope they end up in the uncanny valley. Sounds dangerous to me.
- diggydougie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They should do it in live action, but with Aykroyd and Murray as the jaded old guys hiring in some new hands (talented young comedians) who will be the real story. The magic of the first movie was the whole concept of a ghost exterminator, that ship has sailed. So any sequel should find a way to bring back the novelty and with some breakout new talent.
- tedc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Indiana Jones, Real Genius, and now Ghostbusters: all films I enjoyed immensely during my formative years. I am excited, yet a little nervous at the prospect of their sequels. Here's to hoping they don't all go "The Phantom Menace" on us, though come to think of it, that might have made a good title for a Ghostbusters sequel...
- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -2/+4Besides "The Incredibles", Brad Bird also directed "The Iron Giant," a great movie. He's got a new one coming out for Pixar this year, "Ratatouille", which also looks good.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129167/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382932/ - ArtMonkeyWorld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Murray has stated for years that he would not reprise his role, not just because he wanted the franchise to be left alone, but because he didn't want to make "Geriatric Ghostbusters". Murray agreeing to do CGI is not far fetched because he has made two Garfield films, and either A enjoyed the experience, or B realized it was little work for a nice check.
This notwithstanding, Dan Aykroyd has been talking about making this movie for years, even before Blues Brothers 2000. The original concept involved The original Ghostbusters training Chris Farley and Will Smith but then Farley died and they were going to replace him with Ben Stiller for a while, and then the studio said that to make the third movie with everything that he wanted would cost to many hundreds of millions to be produced. Much Like Indy4 where everyone has had to sign off on the script each one of the original Ghostbusters must sign off on a new movie, and it must be all or none. Bill has been the hold out for the last few years worrying that it would be like Blues Brothers 2000. This coupled by sudden bad blood between Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman for his "borrowing" of certain concepts for Evolution has held the movie back for years.Imagine Dans surprise when he showed up to film his 2 day cameo on Evolution only to discover that not everything was original.Although, with all the time and investment that he has put in this project, one is left with some concern about Dan's objectivity for a new project, but I still have high hopes for this movie.
p.s.(Pointless sidenote)
Murray inadvertently got Lorenzo Music who voiced Peter Venkman in the Real Ghostbusters removed from the show when he casually mentioned at a lunch with Ivan Reitman that the voice didn't sound like him. Years later After Lorenzo Music passed away Murray was hired to voice Garfield.Lorenzo Music's most famous character. Muarice Larmarche, who voices the Brain, several characters from Futurama , and Egon from the cartoon series said in a later interview that if Murray was not aware of this fact, he would make sure he new before the end of the Garfield shoot.Just a fun pointless fact, that goes to show that I spend way too much time online. : ) - Mark_DeRidder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree. I do like the new recruits idea I heard about a while back when Farley was alive. Chris Farely, Ben Stiller and Chris Rock as new ghostbusters would have been great, but really only would have worked 10 years ago. Ben Stiller and Chris Rock are older and more familiar now.
Maybe there are other up and comers that could fill that role. - jesuschrysler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What? What was wrong with number 2?? Vigo the Carpathian!
- jorgenmz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I was a kid, I loved the cartoons so much. And although I'd prefer cartoon over CGI, at least I hope this brings enough hype so they can finally release the Real Ghostbusters on DVD.

- DTJunkie07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i remember when i was 4 years old the marshmallow monster used to scare the daylights out of me lol
- teamgwho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1as much as the idea of a 3rd ghostbusters intrigues me... the fact that Bill Murray didn't want to do it should be a clue. the idea that anyone thinks that a CGI Venkman with his voice will work... should be a clue. I wonder if the whole Manhell-tan idea was the original idea, or a way to work around Murray refusals?
feh. I'll go see it but I don't have high hopes. - TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dan Aykroyd "Unplugged on UFOs"

Maybe he thinks Ghostbusters are real too? - vinnyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Real Ghostbusters Cartoon is on DVD. Not the entire series, but they have released 3 DVDs worth of "the best episodes". Whoever did the covers should go back to art school though. After some digging around, it appear they might actually be releasing entire seasons soon.... haven't found a solid confirmation yet though. And for some reason other countries are getting different episodes released.
