- Pie_Man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thermite is actually pretty easy to make and pretty safe to handle. rnrnYou get iron oxide (rust) from any brickyard...because that is what they use to make the bricks red. The stuff is really cheap (something like $5 for a big bag of it). You then get some aluminum scrapings/turnings and mix it to a 1 to 3 ratio. You can't just light it with a match because the ignition point is so high. All you have to do is use a sparkler as a fuze.rnrnDoes anyone here know if blended/pulverized aluminum foil would work, or would it contain too much aluminum oxide due to the increased surface area of the foil. Producing aluminum turnings is somewhat of a pain in the butt.
- phatcactus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What's wrong with the French?
- Legato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2reminds me of hacking with ramsey (sp)
- kfritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Didn't The Screen Savers use thermite to destroy data on a hard drive?

- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Note that the announcer is not bashing the French, he's bashing French engineering. That's as fair game as bashing British cuisine, or American humility.
- badminus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It was a compilation of all the stuff they did with Thermite on the British show Brainiac, which is a bit like Top Gear but for science rubbish. This was just three clips from the season, hence why there's a lot of repeat footage and similar phrasing. They did some other stuff with thermite, I think they pitted it against titanium body armour, or carbon fibre or something like that which was pretty cool.
Rubbish show though, just dull. - camintmier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thermite + cars = very cool.
Actually, Thermite + anything = very cool. - Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IRREVERSIBLE REACTIONS FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111ONEONEONE
- evanwalsh, on 05/04/2008, -0/+1I digg it. Hilarious. The petrol part was the best.
- mikedpirone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1+digg for killing the french car
- solusdotipse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think its very cool to use a show that's not yours, edit it and slap you name at the end of it with NO CREDITS to the show whatsoever.
- pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.unitednuclear.com/ for all your ramsey supplies. they have thermite Ready made.
- eliomar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that was uber cool imagine the destruction one can do. oh wait you all saw the destruction.
Next up, a tank. - TexMachina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been hearing tales of this thermite trick since I was a kid playing with magnesium strips in class. Big thanks to Brainiac for demonstrating it to the world.

Urban legends that turn out to be crap - 47,595 - spongbros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Three clips from three separate episodes of Brainiac: Science Abuse, shown on the British TV channel Sky One. Yes, it is ultra-repetitive, but it's aimed at those with short attention spans. They repeat the same lines each and every show. Bear in mind that these cilps were taken from different episodes.
- Kuth678, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ahhh... memories of the Jolly Rodger :) I tried to make this once.. never worked
- chrism1128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if this Thermite could burn through an Artificial Penis Hummer.
Oh, I'm sorry, that must not sound very Merrrican. - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hahahaha that was cool!!!!
"The irreversible thermite reaction" is most impressive.
It was way better than Ramzi's.
:)

I love thermite *drools* - hoku808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"give this homage to french engineering the sendoff that it so richly deserves". Classic.
- Vladek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The super-high thermite burning temperature vs the super-cold liquid nitrogen temperature is irrelevant in the comparison. What matters is the character and amount of each substance present at the given temperature; that is, the heat capacity.
I think it's pretty obvious to everyone that if they had dumped the burning thermite in a pool of liquid nitrogen, the "liquid nitrogen would win". - bigboehmboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Thermite + cars = very cool.rnActually, Thermite + anything = very cool."rnrnActually, thermite+ anything = very hot XD.rnI saw this a while ago; great video. anyone know a site with torrents for g4tech tv?
- p014k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thermite > *
- MrDolomite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent. Explosives + Anti-French = Dugg. I just we he wouldn't say "irreverisble thermite reaction" so many times.
- mfdavids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In high school chemistry class, we ordered a thermite kit. All ours did was burn up. It's awesome to finally see a good thermite reaction!
- u3b3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now the terrorsts know? please. thermite has been around longer than railroads (where it was used to weld sections of track together)
- apurvsqc, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1Amazing.. You gotta getover it!
http://BuildHydrogenCar.com - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@el_jefe - The purpose it serves is that it's cool to watch. There's a huge difference between knowing what thermite does and blowing a car up with it. Quit trolling.
AWESOME video. Dugg. - DelseaDiver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Love that brainiac show.
- strangerzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't worry about terrorists knowing about thermite worry about your local teenager knowing about thermite!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, please stop using google video!
It doesnt work in France! (im not french by the way) - plefno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1woohoo, I wish I had a french car to torch.
- forgeflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ignite thermite the old fashioned way - with potassium permanganate and sulphuric acid. ;)
- bunni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone remember the Anarchist's Cookbook? I stole 3 rolls of magnesium strip from my high school science lab to set off my homebrew thermite. :D
- Bitgod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, now we have to track garden flowerpot sales to make sure terrorists don't get them.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What an exothermic reaction, christ!
- Fictitious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
"...signaling the inevitable victory for thermite..." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've gotta get me some of that! *evil grin*
- whitty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, the reaction is even cleaner and stronger when magnesium oxide and aluminum are used. A thermite reaction is any reaction where oxygen transfers from substance a to b, instead of b combusting with oxygen present in the air. The farther that substances combusted together are, the more violent the reaction, so since Mg and Al are farther than Fe and Al, the more entertaining the show! Mg and Al can also be considered "safer" since molten iron doesn't spew everywhere - the Al and Mg stay together in the blob. My chem teacher once reacted a +1 element with a -1 element, with proper consideration for stoicheometric ratios to get complete combustion. He says it vaporized the Pyrex petree dish he had on top of it :) Burned his eyebrows off at 6 feet too :P
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"please STOP using Google Video! It's limited to the united states, which is both very annoying and contrary to the very principles of the internet." -
Works for me and i'm in England, but I gues you could use a proxy from here:
http://www.hidemyass.com/free_proxy_lists.php - mjar81, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So... how many times do i have to be reminded that the reaction is irreversible?
that was a lame ass announcer.
no digg, although cool. - Pacabowl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1***** N Cool
Braniac one of the few good show on G4 along with X-play
G4 Sux Ass ***** U G4
TechTV 4 Life - ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love thermite. Dugg
Why did the guy either get sampled saying 'The irreversable thermite reaction begins" They could have thrown some variation in the script. - redalienzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0stuff being lit on fire and making fun of the French... a win win situation DIGG ++++++++++
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Brainiac is always fun to watch. One of Sky One's better creations.
- yesukai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember when I first stumbled upon articles on thermite. It was teh sole objective of me and the friends I was living with for about a week. Being poor, we tried to make it without using any money. We failed. We got plenty of rust (Iron Oxide) of off some old metal stuff. I think it was the aluminum, which we got by using sandpaper to grind down aluminum cans. Either: aluminum cans arent really aluminum, or the aluminum oxidized long before we got it mixed with the iron.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why does it say gifporn.com at the end?
- Massif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is so weird, I just saw a TV show that mentioned thermite. I think it was CSI or Law and Order.
Anyway, it's kinda scary how common the ingredients are... and how destructive it can be. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HOLY ***** OF FIRE!
