- Icecream, on 12/09/2007, -16/+140The trailer made it look horrible, I remember seeing it months ago and thinking I didn't want to see this movie.
- Everglow, on 12/09/2007, -16/+130I'm actually suprised. Considering the content of these books and the promise of the cast, I expected a great deal more.
- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -47/+148I wonder how much of that is due to the religious nutters kicking up their usual fuss...
I'm looking forward to seeing it, based upon loving the books. This doesn't bode well for the next two films though. :( - brownthaclown, on 12/09/2007, -13/+109You can't spend so much money on a film and have a kid play the lead role. LOTR looked like a movie for everyone, this looks like a kids movie.
- Missle59, on 12/09/2007, -0/+88I think that they had a kid play the lead role, because the main character in the book is a kid.
- aussieNickuss, on 12/09/2007, -14/+100I don't understand why people walk out of films, regardless of enjoying it or not. Especially only after 30 minutes.....you gotta give a movie longer than that before you dismiss it.
- chrisinsocalif, on 12/09/2007, -5/+79I think it was trying to play off the success of LOTR or Harry Potter type films yet failed to gain public interest. Hopefully Hollywood won't blame the internet for the lack of success.
- savethemooses, on 12/09/2007, -4/+74I'm really looking forward to seeing Juno.
- robfrench, on 12/09/2007, -4/+67Just saw it: I felt like they made a shallow reproduction of an awesome book, and then played it back in fast forward. Kinda like the director was a hyperactive child... "And this girl had this compass, and it told her things, and she found this bear, and she went to get his armor for him so he helped her OH! and there were witches and then bad guys came and then...."
Eragon comes to mind, but not THAT bad. - aaaleman, on 12/09/2007, -9/+71I saw it. They butchered the perfectly good story in the novel. I was sad.
- mechagazoo15, on 12/09/2007, -16/+72Actually, I'm willing to bet that the content of the books is what drove a lot of people away. I think it would be an interesting study to find out where the movie did best and where it flopped the worst in the U.S. $3 says the Bible belt had the lowest turnout. I still wanna see it, though. It looked really interesting. Also: Polar Bears.
- jontando, on 12/09/2007, -0/+49You turned off the the projector at the theater?
Oh, I get it... - Gav0510, on 12/09/2007, -10/+53Read the books people.
- zydeco, on 12/09/2007, -1/+42I agree totally. They should reshoot E.T. with Clive Owen in the role of Elliott.
- Tyrghast, on 12/09/2007, -1/+42Bear Cavalry: 0, Superbad/Arrested Development Kid: 1
- Commonwealth, on 12/09/2007, -9/+46I saw this opening night because one of my friends loves the books and I haaaaaated it. It's the only movie I can think of where I seriously wanted to leave during the whole first hour. The Christians have nothing to do with it doing bad. I live in Georgia and have heard nothing about it. The trailers were boring, it has cutesy animals running around, and it wants to be Lord of the Rings, but it forgot to add in anything remotely cool/interesting/epic. I was hoping for some interesting anti-religion stuff going on, but there was nothing even remotely controversial.
But hey, that's just my opinion. - sealhands, on 12/09/2007, -20/+57i think the christians were protesting it, you would have thought that would have attracted a larger audience.
- KnightMareInc, on 12/09/2007, -3/+35but it had james bond!
- PhoenixCE, on 12/09/2007, -5/+34I'm sure they won't blame Christians for the low turnout but I'm sure they will blame piracy.
- insonh, on 12/09/2007, -6/+32it bombed because it sucked!
any other reason is just nit picking - whiteknives, on 12/09/2007, -9/+34I wouldn't blame the Christians on this one guys. The author behind The Golden Compass has made several remarks about how Harry Potter got all the attention while he flew under the radar.
- sanman, on 12/09/2007, -8/+31I really liked the trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mpCYhp7t7M
But a lot of what's in the trailer was cut from the movie. I blame part of this on the religious nuts whose pressure forced the filmmakers to compromise. I also feel the film was much shorter than it should have been -- it was like they tried to cram a 3-hr movie into 2 hrs. - Tyrghast, on 12/09/2007, -6/+28Am I the only one turned on by talking bears in armor? I would gladly watch 90 minutes of just that... March of the Penguins style too!
- Pake, on 12/09/2007, -3/+25$10 says it's because everyone in college right now is taking or studying for their finals and won't be seeing a movie for at least another week.
- DocHoliday22, on 12/09/2007, -3/+25Trailers didn't look too fantastic... I'm not sure it will do well against other upcoming movie releases...
- bigdsinferno, on 12/09/2007, -0/+20uhh... i think Harry Potter did alright.
- JoeRockEHF, on 12/09/2007, -3/+22Yeah, I like Ellen Page...a lot.
- notoneofus, on 12/09/2007, -4/+22No offense if you've been moving in different SF/F circles than I have, but I've been told to read these books by no less than two dozen well-known writers. I'm surprised to hear someone who is familiar with the genre say that they haven't been told the same.
The books are, actually, very popular, though for a time were primarily relegated to the young adult section of book stores. - obrysii, on 12/09/2007, -7/+24Its not really an attack on Christianity ... anyone who is strong in his or her faith will not be offended by The Golden Compass.
Its only those asshats who ruin it for us more moderate Christians. Extremists get all the attention. - tynansanger, on 12/09/2007, -1/+18This is why Hollywood is losing hundreds of millions this year even before the strike. The budgets of films no longer match their expected revenue. Evan Almighty, anyone?
- rickcarson, on 12/09/2007, -3/+20Harry Potter is practically a household name. Tolkein is the gold standard by which all other fantasy series are measured.
How many people have heard of the golden compass? I'm amazed it did as well as it did frankly. - Kypt, on 12/09/2007, -1/+18Throughout the movie I kept expecting them to somehow find a coke and have all the bears drink it while she was talking to the King..unno, seing that many polar bears I felt coke was missing, taht's how far coca cola's advertising has gone into my brain.
- TimoMcD, on 12/09/2007, -2/+18Yeah, I saw the trailer and had no idea what was going on. All I could make out was that for some reason Nicole Kidman wanted to steal a golden compass that did something from a little girl. Then there were animals and stereotypes from different countries involved. I had no idea what the movie was about. That's the point of the trailer. I'm sure I could go online and research it, but I'm not going to start doing work for advertisements.
It looked pretty, though. - quomen, on 12/09/2007, -1/+17I'm not.. Seeing the trailers, I didn't get the same "HOLY ***** THAT'S EPIC I GOTTA SEE THAT" feeling that i've gotten for several huge budget movies.
- aaaleman, on 12/09/2007, -1/+17It's the content of the books that they turned to *****.
- petard, on 12/09/2007, -2/+17Then don't bother making a movie. It is just too cheesy when there is a kid being super heroic.
- KyleGoetz, on 12/09/2007, -2/+16To be fair, I didn't see elfprince13 once invoke Christianity as "all religion," nor did he decry the film as anti-religion. Instead, he was merely saying it was bigoted (presumably toward Christianity).
For what it's worth, I'm Christian and I was looking forward to seeing this movie until I heard from all my friends and from reviews that the film SUCKS HARD. - rickcarson, on 12/09/2007, -4/+18"Flew under the radar". Hmm.... sounds like sour grapes to me.
Lots of people who are wannabe professional writers have told me that the writing of the Harry Potter series is awful. I believe them, but they are missing the point. HP is marketed to kids, written from a kids point of view, and hence appeals to kids. Most of the authors trying to break into the kids market just treat their audience with contempt. HP doesn't, that is why it is popular, not because of its perfect purple prose.
That said, I'll be keen to track this author down and have a look at what they wrote, but if it is just page after page of "religion is bad, m'kay" (as it sounds like from other people's comments) - then I think I'll know why it tanked at the box office. - honkaform, on 12/09/2007, -1/+14And here I was thinking of not going until next week because it'd be too crowded.
- inactive, on 12/09/2007, -5/+18I would pay double to see a movie mocking mohammad.
- terracottapai, on 12/09/2007, -1/+14Someone never saw Miami Vice..
- DCGaymer, on 12/09/2007, -1/+13Per BoxOfficeMojo, http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?sortdate ... It seems to have been a slow friday all around.
- tateswayz91, on 12/09/2007, -2/+14Didn't seem to hurt he Harry Potter movies too much when they protested them.
- arbulus, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12The Eragon movie made no sense whatsoever. To me, if you hadn't read the book, you would have absolutely no ***** idea whatsoever what was going on.
- KyleGoetz, on 12/09/2007, -1/+13I think perhaps it's because the movie sucks. I've seen a ton of scathing reviews, the film is rated poorly on Rotten Tomatoes (which shows that critics haven't liked it), and every person I know who saw it opening weekend said the film was HORRIBLE. Also, there's a lot of buzz that they cut out and changed a lot of the storyline to appease fundie-types, so I'm guessing all these negative points have contributed to the film bombing.
I mean, cuz who doesn't wanna see bears fight? - kazamx, on 12/09/2007, -2/+13I honestly find it hard to believe that you haven't heard of this series of books. If its true you move in Scifi/fantasy circles then its pretty much impossible not to have come across these books.
- TripcodeMel, on 12/09/2007, -8/+19"Religious nutters kicking up their usual fuss" leads to movies being box-office smashes.
Please see: Howard Hughes, "The Outlaw," and Jane Russell's *****. - inactive, on 12/09/2007, -5/+16Exactly! Gives it too much of a Narnia-ish overtone.
- aceslick911, on 12/09/2007, -4/+14blame bit torrent. clearly it's responsible...
- Daiken, on 12/09/2007, -0/+10Hmmm...I'm one of those people who didn't watch the movie and probably won't for a long time. It looked somewhat interesting 6 months ago when they were having a lot of ads. To be honest, I stopped seeing ads as the movie came closer. Then again, all I saw were a bunch of children and a bear, oh yeah and a golden compass. I didn't quite get the story from the trailer, and I'd never even heard of the books till the movie. To be blunt, nothing got my attention to watch this movie. They had Nicole Kidman there, could have atleast given her a meaningful part in the trailers. Could have explained a bit more what the hell the movie is about. And given more reason why a grown up would want to watch it.
