Now let's all make sexy time! - taybay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29That movie honestly made me laugh the most I've ever laughed in the span of two hours.
- twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27There were almost no theatres here in BC playing it. I had to travel about 60 miles in order to see it, and then the first 2 showings I tried to get into were sold out. Quite a popular movie.
- markperia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30ver nize! hi five!
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25The FOX Broadcasting/Film Company are weird. On one hand they have their supremely biased redneck news, and on the other they allow that same demographic to be torn a new arsehole multiple times a year.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Imagine if it had a wider release
- mrkmrk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22It was cut from 3000 theaters to 800 theaters.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26wo waa wee waa!
HIGH FIVE! - OdinEye, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25Napoleon Dynamite wasn't funny to everyone. Some of us were bored to tears and shut it off before getting to the end.
Not everyone has the same taste in entertainment.
Dick. - ga7sh, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26ya man i was definitely a fan of Ali G.
and the borat skits were some of the funniest ***** on the show.
i dunno i just think the character got watered down in this movie.
LOL at the morons who modded me down for speaking my mind. morons - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15wide opening this friday, I'm going to see it then
- crumbelievable, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16The people who predict box office receipts are so out of touch! They had it at 16 mil tops, but *knew* that the Santa Clause 3 would beat it. When I saw the 9 mil first-day total on boxofficemojo, I wasn't surprised in the least. A bland sequel vs. a fresh and ingenious comedy with a lot of word of mouth. Hmm... who's predicting the box offce and why haven't they been fired yet? Seriously, this movie would have made a TON of money this weekend had it been released in more than 800 theatres.

Yeah, I bet someone in Hollywood is kicking himself right about now. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -3/+16Fox are gay *****. Take away all our good TV series and then reduce your screening theaters by almost a quarter at the last minute.

- m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12yeah, I heard Fox cut like half the theaters it was supposed to play in for some gay reason
This was direct from a theater staff... because the place near my house had posters for months for the movie, I go in there opening night... "no borat here... go across town to see it"
uber lame - oxyrubber, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14"pulls fast one"?
Cohen has been in character for MONTHS trying to get any press he could. Granted, he has better characters on his Ali G show (even though most of the jokes are only understandable by those who live in England), but he's been plugging Borat on every show I watch. That, and the commercial advertisements all all over the few TV shows I watch.
If Hollywood didn't see Borat becoming at least a little success, then they really need to open up their eyes. And what did it have to compete with? Two children/"family" shows and several month-old releases. I don't have much to say about Borat either way (other than I will probably see it in the next month), but I'm tired of reporters (or editors) who try to make catchy headlines and comprimise truth/accuracy in the process. - revisrev, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Yea, I found Napolean Dynamite next to intolerable. However, I did finish it, then I watched it again and laughed my ass off. I don't even understand how the hell that happens. I think the first time I was expecting a lot of comedy, and the second time I was expecting a lot of awkwardness, and I found it hilarious.
- cwinther, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Box office mojo says 18 million production budget.
http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=borat.htm - msaunds83, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It really is quite an achievement considering it was playing in a quarter of the theatres the #2 movie was playing yet it still out sold it.
Great success! - crumbelievable, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I highly doubt it was calculated. Will Ferrell's movie is opening next week and that will likely take a good chunk out of Borat's moneypile. They def. lost millions of dollars by not releasing wide the first weekend.

"Granted, he has better characters on his Ali G show (even though most of the jokes are only understandable by those who live in England),"
better characters on his show? first there are only two other characters (ali g and bruno) and most would agree that ali g and borat are the two best (and judging by the release of earnings i am sure there are alot that would agree). i also don't see how you could think that most of the jokes are only understandable is you live in England because the only references to English culture in the show are the slang words that ali g uses. i agree that yeah they didn't pull a fast one, but 26.4 million is a substantial amount no matter what movies are in theaters. If you look at the earnings borat was playing in almost a 1/5 less of the amount of theaters as the others. in the top 3 the movie averaged $26,000 more than the other movies per theater. i don't know what qualifies as a success in your book but i would say they did pretty damn good.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2006&wknd=44&p=.htm - pasqualiej, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7..... all praise the second coming of Borat!!!!
- pjack91, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9It's worth more than $12.
- drewpost, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8No, he is speaking Polish! Really
- pjack91, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Notice how he isn't Polish.
http://www.bustedtees.com/shirt/jagshemash/male - MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I think the "achievement" was largely due to the massive media blitz that Cohen's been on for the past month. The guy's been interviewed everywhere; and where he isn't interviewed, he's been written about. Not to mention the deluge of commericals for the movie. I mean, it *is* being distributed nationally by Fox, it's not like this is an indie flick that organtically built a fanbase.
Cohen's certainly paid his dues for many years and deserves success. But please don't get caught up in the commerical hype. - codethis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i saw the movie last night and he speaks hebrew most of the time he is speaking to the producer guy
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In terms of film openings, yes.
- lemorex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is a cultural experience. I don't remember walking out of a movie laughing so hard.
Normally, I don't like paying to go to theaters, but in this case I wouldn't have minded paying double. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Shutup scrooge.
- monofonik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4twtmc: Did you go to Colossus? I live in Surrey and tired to get in yesterday, failed miserably.
It'll grow though, like Napoleon Dynamite, EVERYONE will see it and it'll be the most quoted movie ever. - Roger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ga7sh:
Thats interesting.
Were you a fan of the Ali G shows? - Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Maybe it is worth $12, but the days of having to go to the movies just to get the news are over and so should the days of movies only being released in movie theaters first.
- OpCzar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Wow, wonder how much the movie cost to make...
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3*to* almost a quarter. But yeah, pretty stupid of Fox.
- kriminalintent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm going to guess most of the budget went into getting the rights to put out some of the footage they got. There were tons of questions i had after the film, like how he did not get arrested, how was he able to get the rights to show peoples faces in the street that he talked to or interacted with on the subway. You can't just set up a shot and shoot there is a ton of paper work thats goes with as film if it makes it into mainstream theaters.
- OdinEye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm guessing that's because they are in business to make money, so they make decisions that they think will do that.
For the bean counters, the bottom line is the primary objective. In the end, I seriously doubt any business like this cares who they are skewering if it makes the income they are looking for. - strat0tele, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hollywood suprised? A lot of money was pumped into advertising this movie. The character has been around for years on a TV show, but within the past few months due to insane amounts of advertising everyone and their mothers have heard about it.
That said, I thought the movie was great. - Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Borat Pulls Fast One on Hollywood with $26.4 Million Debut"
Fantastic!
The only downside is that now Hollywood is going to latch on to the 'formula' and what's the bet we'll start seeing them pump out copious amounts of cheap ripoff films and sequels.. (Actually since Cohen's cover is now officially blown as Borat.. I guess there will be no Borat sequels.. amen..)
The Bruno movie will be just as hilarious I hope..

Jimzip :D - Ravenhaft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1btw for anyone that didn't see it http://digg.com/movies/Universal_wins_rights_to_Borat_sequel so yes, a Bruno movie will be coming out.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yay for random irrelevant Borat quotes? :-p
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Looks like Borat will not be execute, after all
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Well if they could accurately predict fox office receipts in the first place, there wouldn't be so many flops.
- BAKER, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Why isn't the first comment "GREAT SUCCESS!"?
digg, when will you learn. - jicon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6LOVE the show, and think Borat steals every scene on da Ali G show. The wine tasting episode from series two is really something to behold.
I saw the movie on opening night, and felt a bit ripped off. Nothing new from Cohen, 90% of the scenes/jokes are used on interviews over the past month.
I think the good point of the TV show, is that Borat really goes overboard with people for 8-10 minutes, drawing out reactions from the victim, and eventually getting some biases out of the interviewer. This doesn't happen in this movie. The interviews are cut far too short, and when some momentum is almost built with a scene, it's cut... on to the next bit. I know Cohen can do better.
For those who haven't seen it, but love the Borat bits from Da Ali G show, don't bother wasting your money.
For those newly introduced to Borat, and loved the movie, go rent Da Ali G show on DVD. Far funnier in my opinion. - ricree, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"What, you think I'm going to spend $12 to see it?"
If you want to see it now, then yes. If you don't want to pay that money, then you still have plenty of legitimate options. For example, you could wait until it is released on DVD and rent it for a couple bucks, or just go out and buy it. It's not like you are going to die or something if you have to wait a bit to see it. - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The wine tasting episode from series two is really something to behold."
