- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -4/+755 minutes into the strike, the producers broke out into a spontaneous song & dance number.
- Pseudorious, on 04/03/2009, -0/+56It's hard to fathom a film industry that produces 2-3 movies daily.
Okay, it's hard to fathom a non-pornographic film industry that produces 2-3 movies a day. - Kardde, on 04/03/2009, -4/+56"FYI...the Indian film industry is the world's largest, churning out more than 900 films every year."
750 of which are 90 minutes of people dancing. - inactive, on 04/03/2009, -2/+19Good. The perfect Bollywood movie was already made - we don't need any more.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5Pjo0WjBcs - Ghengis, on 04/03/2009, -1/+17Pushkar: Man these are some really crappy films we're making.
Rama: Yeah, how are we EVER going to make money off of this crap? Every 10 minutes another song and dance breaks out! They're all the same film!
Pushkar: I've got it! We'll just make THOUSANDS of these films. Then, there will be so many that people won't have time to tell that they're all horrible.
Rama: So basically, we're just covering crap with more crap?
Pushkar: EXACTLY!!! - painting, on 04/03/2009, -1/+14its like a bad car accident, you can't help but keep watching it.
- kinerry, on 04/03/2009, -5/+17fyi
most films != largest - elmontsmilitia, on 04/03/2009, -2/+13Slumdog was not a Bollywood film
- nepidae, on 04/03/2009, -0/+10"The Indian film industry is the world's largest, churning out more than 900 films every year. "
That's like 1 days work in the porn industry. - jakeny, on 04/03/2009, -2/+11JAI HO!!!
- kingatrock, on 04/03/2009, -1/+10But where else can we get those 900 quality films every year?
- s0m31john, on 04/03/2009, -5/+14And nothing of value was lost.
- specialK16, on 04/03/2009, -2/+11Forces? Do they also put a gun in your head and make you watch it?
Ha, this reminds of The Simpsons episode where Apu has to live with the Simpsons. He puts in an Inidan movie, and it is this women dancing in the screen, then suddenly a few indian "bad" guys jump in with swords, looking all threatening and *****, and suddenly, they begin to dance like the rest.
lmao. - kattabomman, on 04/03/2009, -2/+10depends on what entity you attribute your weights to. In this case it was the number of films, and so largest
- gumballer, on 04/03/2009, -3/+10no more sliding horse stunts?
- Nore, on 04/03/2009, -1/+8Wish I could digg you up more my good man.
- ummcordell, on 04/03/2009, -3/+9Why does everyone think that since Slumdog Millionaire was filmed in India that it is a Bollywood film?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1010048/faq#.2.1.14 - RuSTeDs, on 04/03/2009, -1/+6elmontsmilitia is right. Shahrukh Khan is the most well known celebrity in the world, beating Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Americans live in a hollywood bubble insulated from whatever going on elsewhere in the world cinema. If you didn't heard of him, doesn't mean others havent. SRK, Mithun and Amitabh are well known in Africa, Middle East, Russia and elsewhere. Watch the Outer World and Inner World of Shahrukh Khan. Here's a clip of his popularity.

And I manage to not see, or care about, all 900+ of them EACH YEAR. It's EXHAUSTING. - camaroz06, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5Are movie goers of India similar to us in that they are tired of the same crappy movies being made over and over again?
- jozb, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5Yes.
- fury420, on 04/03/2009, -0/+5reminds me of a skit from some old canadian comedy show, uhh, maybe SCTV, but i'm unsure, one of those semi-low budget comedy shows anyways...
was an interview with the "latest bollywood acting sensation", some random guy from Brampton, Ont. who went on a vacation to india, was "discovered" and had since starred in something like 35 movies in the past 6 months, half of which contained the word "Bombay", and they showed "clips" of these movies, all of which were just him standing in front of scenes, dancing, with music. - ideaash, on 04/03/2009, -2/+6Good, no more singing, dancing for a while.
- norman619, on 04/03/2009, -1/+5How will this impact us?
- simpletonian, on 04/03/2009, -1/+5" some freaks absolutely covered in gold head to toe throwing lightning bolts at each other". This is not awesome because.....
- counterplex, on 04/03/2009, -1/+5I doubt any of that is canon

In other news, I'll see your "perfect" Bollywood movie and I'll raise you the _more_ perfect Bollywood movie:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVDtzBeap7I - bigpun, on 04/03/2009, -0/+4Ugly betty was actually a rip-off of an indian series. I know it's not a movie, and not technically Bollywood...meh whatever
- Alli3388, on 04/03/2009, -2/+6For some reason, there is a small group of people who think it's hip to like Bollywood.
- chrisu, on 04/03/2009, -2/+6No more Benny Lava?? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! :(
- RuSTeDs, on 04/03/2009, -2/+5Shahrukh Khan is the most popular actor in India and arguably, the world. He presented one of the awards at Golden Globes. Don't take my word for his popularity. Watch the trailer of his documentary made by BBC. He has an audience of atleast over 1.3 billion.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b89gqbFnol8&fea ...
If you liked the trailer, you can find the entire episodes on youtube. - kingmanic, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3Thats the yearly output of some individual porn stars.
- likwidfuzion, on 04/03/2009, -1/+4Now poop on them Oliver!
- Deaconstructed, on 04/03/2009, -3/+6Bollywood ***** sucks. There I said it.
- Stalinist, on 04/03/2009, -2/+5But how will I watch all those bollywood films I watched before.
/s. - iizh, on 04/03/2009, -0/+3Good thing you're a representative sample of the world population.
- dollar0dot02, on 04/03/2009, -1/+4Nobody is larger than my hornywood.
- Alli3388, on 04/03/2009, -2/+5Seriously. Many Indians were insulted by Slumdog, and it's been said by critics that only rich white people could ever have made that movie.
- kinseyincanada, on 04/03/2009, -2/+5there are a ton of great Bollywood films for example Khabhi Khushi Khabhi Gaum, Sholay, Devdas are all great films. There not all only about dancing saying that is just a stereotype the same stereotype can say that American films are all about killing and action.
- kurkpeterman, on 04/03/2009, -1/+3Doesn't largest generally mean 'the largest gross revenue'. Now I don't know this for a fact, but that has got be the US with people spending $10 a ticket! 900 films doesn't mean much; the US must put out at least that in porn each year (the porn industry itself may be larger than Bollywood, I don't know). Again, I don't know the facts, maybe someone can shed some light?
- ortucis, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2Don't worry, soon another comic book hero will rise to save the world while waving American flag from the rooftop.
- painting, on 04/03/2009, -3/+5my god, who else is going to blatantly rip off hollywood movies now?
- drastik21, on 04/03/2009, -2/+4did u just compare india with canada?
- inactive, on 04/03/2009, -3/+5ah, what a surprise. i dont think they have to go on strike as they should just look for other outlets to express their vision. but i hope everything ends ok
- Rudegar, on 04/03/2009, -1/+3well i hate musicals
- m0tbaillie, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2Nollywood, in Nigeria, puts out more films than that per year. Their average shooting time is between 1-2 weeks and churning at a film in 3 weeks start to finish is the norm.
Just because you ***** out the most movies does not make you the "largest" film industry. Hollywood reaches the most people worldwide and brings in the most profits foreign and domestic, neither Bollywood not Nollywood can top that, not even close. - ortucis, on 04/03/2009, -1/+3He still can't act for *****. ***** never managed to bring any new emotion in any movie, at least not after Darr.
Amitabh Bacchan, Akshay Kumar and Amir Khan, now THEY can act. - ortucis, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2I disagree, esp. with Amitabh Bacchan part. You are talking about his current movies, I am comparing his work since day-1 (I grew up watching his incarnations of Ajay/Vijay). Compared to Naseeruddin Shah and Irfan Khan (he's actually the worst comparison to anyone.. good for only serious roles), he can rake in ten times more the crowd because he simply is capable of bringing every emotion to life with his voice itself.
Aamir Khan isn't even close to all 3 of them though, but he is way better than overhyped SRK and I actually enjoyed watching his movies (like Bacchan, he can do comedy, action and serious roles convincingly enough).
Either way, I am still not watching any retard-fest with 200 songs thrown in for no reason at all. At least in old movies the song sequences made sense most of the time, these days they just throw in random sequences where during the 5 min song the actors manage to change into 20 costumes and travel 5 different locations with a bunch of white people dancing like retards in the background). Oh ***** joy.
BTW: Anupam Kher to Vinod Khanna, they all rock, all Bacchan class. Too bad current gen will grow up watching ***** actors like John Abrahim and SRK trying to copy another Hollywood borefest (which usually ends up being a flop, if any viewer has ever noticed). - EndouOuto, on 04/03/2009, -1/+3Most Bollywood movies are simply awful and
practically no one in the west who isn't an
Indian has ever heard of any of those actors.
It's not racism or hatred we just don't care
or in most cases never heard of Bollywood - mnemy, on 04/03/2009, -2/+4quantity != quality
- DocHoliday22, on 04/03/2009, -2/+4No such implication was made.
