- z3r0c0O1, on 10/06/2008, -7/+227"Beverly Hills Chihuahua" beat Religulous by nearly 10X the amount it grossed. This makes me feel ashamed.
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -11/+166A parody of Michael Moore.......no wonder his movie sucked at the box office.
- Disgod, on 10/06/2008, -14/+133I really want to go see Religulous, hopefully it'll stick around in theaters for a couple weeks.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/06/2008, -11/+122Any movie with Bill O'Reilly in it is a movie best left unseen.
- Powermac, on 10/06/2008, -23/+103Thank... god? Or something.
- Swift2, on 10/06/2008, -17/+94It's so like conservative "humor" when he "jokes" in the preview were a) saying that Moore was a traitor, b) that real men would like to kick his ass, and c) that he wants to abolish the 4th of July! Now that's funny! Hey, the real conservative laff riot would be if they spent the last half-hour waterboarding him!! Now that's good old-fashioned konservative chumor, komrades!
No it's not. That's hysterical sadism, which is only funny to the knuckledraggers who have been running this country. - KaiUno, on 10/06/2008, -9/+64His interview on the Daily Show kicked ass. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't even know he had a movie opening. (Then again, I'm in Belgium, it probably won't play here at all. Oh well, it'll trickle down to the interwebs soon enough.)
- crumbaker, on 10/06/2008, -13/+67No surprise here. I haven't seen Zucker but from the previews it looks terrible. Religulous on the other hand was great and showed an Agnostic's point of view well, although I thought he held back too much.
- AdInventive, on 10/06/2008, -3/+54Wasn't it only on a limited release though? I am pretty certain you won't see this movie showing in conservative towns or cities....
- DiggaDave, on 10/06/2008, -7/+57Thank Science!
- charm803, on 10/06/2008, -7/+50I enjoyed watching it and it gave me the courage to not be so "afraid" to come out of the religious closet.
I used to find it easier to say I was Christian, but now, I am going to say I'm atheist, instead of just saying it on the internets. (I know, I'm pretty brave behind my screen.) - Beevo, on 10/06/2008, -3/+40I'd like to see Religulous but it's not playing anywhere within 200 miles of me.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/06/2008, -6/+40I still don't understand how it would work. The people who would enjoy American Carol are the same ones who refuse to see anything michael Moore makes... so the parody of the whole thing gets a little lost, doesn't it?
- Logicexe, on 10/06/2008, -3/+35After waterboarding him they could send him to France where those godless socialists would force him to marry a homosexual!
Yee Haw! That's good infotainment! - sternomastoid, on 10/06/2008, -1/+29Thank FSM!
- D3ADBOLT, on 10/06/2008, -4/+32And they both lost big too Beverly Hills Chihuahua, so woo hoo
1. "Beverly Hills Chihuahua," $29 million.
2. "Eagle Eye," $17.7 million.
...
9. "An American Carol," $3.8 million.
10. "Religulous," $3.5 million. - chudgoo, on 10/06/2008, -8/+34nospinhere :
nice troll attempt...
but if you live in a very religious area with -locally owned- theaters, there is no way you'll find it playing. The theater operators are afraid of pissing off their community by running it. Who's the coward again? - opticwind, on 10/06/2008, -5/+30***** movie SUCKED. ***** thing SUCKS.
- Tiak, on 10/06/2008, -2/+26How's that? Michael Moore really should be the easiest person in the world to parody, but somehow they screwed it up. American Carol parodies Moore like Disaster Movie parodies... Whatever the ***** it's supposed to be parodying.
- Atomic05, on 10/06/2008, -6/+29With an average of $6,972 per screen at less than one third the number of total screens showing the film. If you're paying attention, that means that Religiulous did almost as well overall as American Carol with far fewer screens, and had much better attendance per showing.
So the question remains: did you read the ***** article? - Equinox2012, on 10/06/2008, -0/+22Hail Sagan!
- mbelleghem, on 10/06/2008, -8/+29Incisive critique. I'd like to see Religulous, first thing that's made me think about going to a theatre in a long time.
- Angostura, on 10/06/2008, -2/+23It wasn't. It was on at fewer theatres.
- kinseyincanada, on 10/06/2008, -6/+26i didnt even know there was a feud or something going on.
- Cwo655321, on 10/06/2008, -1/+20that's just stupid.
- WiretapStudios, on 10/06/2008, -1/+19Slow at first, but later on, everyone was coming?
- prpodium, on 10/06/2008, -5/+23did you read the ***** article?
- familynight, on 10/06/2008, -4/+20he criticized it. he didn't call for it to be censored or not shown. you don't have to get all huffy. you can still enjoy your dumbass little movie.
sidenote: the nazi party was not heavily influenced by socialism. in fact, they double-crossed the socialist party fairly early and then destroyed it. the name "national socialist" was largely a marketing ploy and not hitler's first choice of names. - knodi, on 10/06/2008, -4/+20I can't find a theater thats playing Religulous in my area.
- Hetman, on 10/06/2008, -0/+16America might be partly faithless and partly conservative, but they damn sure know how to waste money on stupid ass movies about dogs.
- mellamoandres, on 10/06/2008, -8/+23You should. it's really good and thought provoking. I was surprised to see a lot of older people (grandmas) in the relatively packed matinee showing at AMC 30 in Orange County. SPOILER ALERT: jesus gets bitch slapped haha.
- Logicexe, on 10/06/2008, -3/+18Being an atheist doesn't require you to affirm that no gods exist. The spectrum of atheism goes from not believing in god to straight out believing he doesn't exist. That's a subtle yet important difference.
We're all atheists to a certain degree. You're an atheist to ancient Greek mythology. You're an atheist to the ancient Egyptians, Mayans, Aztecs, Norsemen etc. - OneLess, on 10/06/2008, -5/+20Religulous had similar opening numbers to Expelled, despite the fact that it opened in half as many theaters as Expelled and didn't have the same advertising blitz. Maybe there's hope for America yet :)
- tastypaste, on 10/06/2008, -9/+24Religulous might have won in per screen average, but An American Carol still took in more money total (not by much). I would expect to see Religulous showing in more theaters because it's clearly a surprise hit if that many people are going out of their way to see it.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=americanca ... - Gutterpunk, on 10/06/2008, -2/+17Many (if not most) Oscar worthy movies are released on a small scale.
Most (if not all) movies showed at Cannes will never be shown at "mainstream" theaters. - Tiak, on 10/06/2008, -2/+16Box Office Mojo isn't including Wednesday through Sunday. Box Office Mojo is giving a quote for October 3–5, 2008 as: $3,500,000 There is an extra $19,000 in with it since Wednesday, but keep in mind that many theaters as a matter of policy only begin playing new films on a single day of the week (Fridays) such that they can do all of them at once with the same amount of prep. Not all theaters playing it started playing it when it was first released, and movie attendance is obviously going to be lower during weekdays.
The fact still stands that the weekend numbers, just for those three days, still look better, despite the fact that it was already available for viewing before that weekend.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=200 ... - Zong, on 10/06/2008, -2/+16The Nazi party as well as the communist part in Russia and I China above all were and are Nationalist. Their economy was build was built socialist economy but their social policies were built on Nationalism the idea that we must give into our government, country and god with out question. Nationalism is exactly what the conservatives and Republicans in this country are heading toward. Nationalism through out history has killed millions and destroyed nations. The Constitution was obviously written to protect the individual and put everyone on equal footing. The founders knew enough to give people enough power to reconfigure it's government if it ever got out of hand. So before you start simplifying history and using the same tired lines from the red scare era it's best not to confuse the socialist economy and conservative economy with liberal and conservative social polices.
- Devrdander, on 10/06/2008, -0/+14Fairly limited, most theater owners get a say in what they do and don't show. Its showing at only 1 of the 6 theaters withing about a 10 mile radius of me...
- alex361, on 10/06/2008, -5/+19If by Oscar you mean swift kick in the nuts, then yes.
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -4/+16the naked gun was big when I was in junior high
- Quicksilver4648, on 10/06/2008, -0/+12Yeah, I have two major theaters near me and one is an AMC 24, yet neither were showing this movie. I had to go a small foreign/artsy 5 room theater to see it. Needless to say, this theater wasn't showing "Beverly Hills Chihuahua."
- FredFredrickson, on 10/06/2008, -0/+12We're doing it live!
- jbapckfan, on 10/06/2008, -1/+12Yeah, it's pretty crazy. BHC actually was the only movie that made more per screen ($9020) than Religulous ($6972) if you only consider movies which made over $1,000,000 this weekend. There were a few movies that made more per screen but made much less than the $3.5 million that Religulous made. Also, there were a few movies that were on way more screens and should have done much better than Religulous but did not (i.e. Blindness, Miracle at St. Anna, Flash of Genius, and How to Lose Friends and Alienate People). All in all, I am pretty impressed with the numbers put up by Religulous and I enjoyed the movie myself quite a bit.
- TheChaosPath, on 10/06/2008, -3/+14Religulous was a great movie, a call for agnostics and atheists to quit being so damned timid and express what it is you (don't) believe in.
- godofpumpkins, on 10/06/2008, -1/+11SamCanDigg: the point is that the humor is bad taste. We may criticize O'Reilly for being a bully (I mean, look at how he "argues" with his "guests"), but we don't say he hates America, or even imply it. We also don't make sweeping generalizations about everyone in America being called John Smith, without clearly having a clue even what their accent sounds like (yes, all people in Afghanistan are called Mohammed Hussein, thank you American Carol). And most of all, we don't joke about everyone in Afghanistan blowing him/herself up for the fun of it. It isn't funny and just makes the writer look like a racist sod, and an audience that watches it complicit in the nasty stereotypes it's reinforcing.
- IndigoMoss, on 10/06/2008, -1/+11@chudgoo
Exactly, I actually wanted to see this movie and I called up the local movie theater to see when they'd be screening it. They didn't have an answer, so I had to be forwarded to the regional manager, and they told me that they had no plans on screening it and would not tell me why.
So I guess I'm just going to have to wait for the DVD and Netflix it. - Myonosken, on 10/06/2008, -0/+10...Actually it was QUITE a while ago.
- inactive, on 10/06/2008, -1/+11It made 3,000 less yes, but on 1/3 as many theaters. Per screen average is what determines if a film gets held over for another week, so guess what will not be in theaters next week.
- Swift2, on 10/06/2008, -2/+12You understand something about pre-screen averages, don't you?
- hellsing47, on 10/06/2008, -1/+11This is the internet.
