- msaleem, on 12/26/2008, -10/+95Hmm, I think Charlie is a bit confused, comic book (super hero) movies aren't exactly science fiction even.
- cantaclaro, on 12/27/2008, -8/+61Since when is The Dark Knight a Sci-Fi Film and what the ***** is Speed Racer doing on that list?
Wall-E, Let the Right One In, Synecdoche, NY, and Iron Man. Bam there it is, I could take or leave the rest of them. - Anorath, on 12/27/2008, -1/+34Wait a minute, two lists? In one page? What is the world coming to?
- charliejane, on 12/27/2008, -6/+33Superheroes exist in a universe with tons of science fictional elements. Batman hangs out with aliens all the time, and in most versions of the Joker's story he's dropped into a vat of chemicals and becomes a sort of posthuman mutant, even if he doesn't have any special powers as a result. Spider-Man gets bitten by a radioactive spider. Iron Man is a cyborg, whose body is actually part machine and powers his armor as well as keeping his heart beating. Etc. etc.
- Kragit, on 12/27/2008, -2/+25To each his own, but I thought Speed Racer was amazing.
- tnerd, on 12/26/2008, -11/+26There are a few movies that I don't want to see on the list.. Speed Racer is one of them..
- tallguyg, on 12/27/2008, -0/+14I thought it was quite fun as well. Its nothing but eye candy, but that's what I was expecting. On a scale of 1 to 10 on the eye candy meter, it was a 15.
- PilotHead, on 12/27/2008, -0/+11Why does The Joker image show up in every movie count down?
- Sornos, on 12/27/2008, -1/+12I think that if the author restricted himself to Hard SF, he'd be hard pressed to find 10 movies, let alone 20. I would love to see the day where he could but good Hard SF are far and few between.
- mickhead, on 12/27/2008, -5/+12It was a great film.
- FearlessFreep, on 12/27/2008, -1/+8Because Chris Nolan seemed to go to pains to avoid having anything like that in Dark Night. He seems bent on establishing Batman in a plausible, realistic universe. Hard to vote it as sci-fi when the makers went out of their way to avoid or remove the fantastical as much as possible
- dives425, on 12/27/2008, -1/+8Great site for people who actually like bad movies http://www.badmovies.org
- StriderNemesis, on 12/27/2008, -1/+8I agree with the article on Speed Racer. I found it great for the reasons they mentioned. I don't know why a lot of people hated it; what were they expecting?
- oldhick, on 12/27/2008, -3/+10Seriously... Sci-fi = science fiction. What part of the dark knight was remotely science?
- ZincSaucier, on 12/27/2008, -6/+12I don't know if you guys realize this but superheroes aren't real, cars can't shoot rockets or turn into motorcycles, cell phones can't create 3-d copies of their location, you can't fly to the middle east in a weaponized suit of armor in 12 seconds, you can't store an independent miniature power plant in your chest, but all these things can be explained and accepted as realistic based on imaginary futuristic scientific developments.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+6but then the movie teeth is not considered as sci-fi either. Teeth is more like thriller or horror movie than sci-fi
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -4/+9I expect The Happening to sweep the Oscars.
/s - inactive, on 12/27/2008, -2/+6Who is that hot chick in the bathtub?
- MaTT2011, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4I agree, i had a great time the whole time i was watching that movie.
Its as though the people who disliked it so intensely were entirely unaware of its campy, tongue in cheek, source material and thought speed racer was supposed to be some melodramatic action drama. Granted it was a fair bit deeper than i expected and actually had GOOD acting, especially given its source material.
Yes, it had big, bright, CG splashed all over the place....thats not a reason to call it a bad movie. - method7670, on 12/27/2008, -6/+9Okay, that was one of the most absurdly compiled lists I have ever seen.
Dark Knight SCI-FI?! ***** THE WHAT?! - inactive, on 12/27/2008, -1/+4Exactly. I mean, it's a story about a family whose last name is Racer, for Christ's sake. Just enjoy it for what it is.
- firebirdx01, on 12/28/2008, -0/+3Dark Knight is not a sci-fi film. This list is retarded.
- archieboi, on 12/27/2008, -8/+11i stopped looking at the list when speed racer was on the 10 best
- Sliver85, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3A movie being popular does not make it good
- Hetman, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Speed racer is sci fi. I liked it. It did not take itself seriously but it was still good. I saw spirit last night. I hate to admit it. But it is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. There are a couple of scenes that look really comic book inspired and very artistically unique. But the dialogue is horrible. If you thought the dialogue in speed racer was bad times that by 1000000 and then you have the spirit.
- CaviMike, on 12/27/2008, -4/+7I'm not even going to read the article. If they consider TDK a sci-fi flick, it's not worth reading. Buried.
- TexasFlood93, on 12/27/2008, -1/+4I liked "The Spirit"
- Kennui, on 12/27/2008, -3/+6Doomsday wasnt THAT bad to the point of being good (for being so bad)...
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Fantasy != Sci-Fi
Buried. - KyleGoetz, on 12/27/2008, -2/+5What the hell is a vampire movie doing in a list of scifi? Vampires are fantasy, not scifi!
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Speed racer was awesome for what it was. Ok we need a better speed racer but apart from that the cars were awesome. the race was awesome and they totally nailed the speed racer atmosphere.
- Dukewintermaul, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3what film did YOU watch?
- StriderNemesis, on 12/27/2008, -1/+3Honestly, I thought Doomsday was stupidly terrible.
- Elranzer, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2Yes but Nolan's Batman movies don't have Science-Fiction elements.
What next? The Dark Knight #1 black comedy of the year? - xcentro, on 12/27/2008, -2/+4Cloverfield???? WTH???
- Yage2006, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Half of these are horror not sci-fi. And most of them SUCK.
Fail/Buried - LarsonLE, on 12/27/2008, -13/+15Can someone tell me how Cloverfield got on that list?
- camg188, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2It's been a bad year for sci-fi movies. There has been a glut of sci-fi movies based on comic books and remakes. Doesn't anyone in Hollywood read novels anymore?
- prcpaul, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2I'm too lazy to do it, but could someone email this blog the definition of science fiction.
- vichussmith, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Such a Bury. OK, so Maybe Batman's gadgets are sci-fi, but the majority of the movie is a superhero fantasy, and partly a drama. I hate items shoehorned into top lists.
The Spirit was sort of science fiction (it was absurd fantasy), but as a comics reader, it really shouldn't have been at all. Avoid that movie in any case. Wait for DVD. - jcaffoe, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Speed Racer was one of the best movies I saw this year. Really solid, well told story and gorgeous visuals. Might be over the top for some people, but you can't deny it's a well crafted film.
- FearlessFreep, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2been a member for years...
- alexkball, on 12/27/2008, -1/+3Yeah and Synecdoche was weird to be sure but not science fiction...this is a crappy list. Iron Man doesn't deserve to be on here either. Buried
- boogieordie, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2I Want to Believe wasn't that bad, I really liked it. That comment about it doesn't make much sense considering the majority of the movie was about them investigating things, kinda makes me wonder if they watched it.
- pnmoore, on 12/27/2008, -2/+4There are very few pure science fiction movies made, meaning truly hard science involved in the storyline. This list is more accurately a science fiction/fantasy/horror list, which is all fine and good. It was a good list overall.
I disagreed with Speed Racer as a good movie (unless you only were talking about visual design/effects) and Hancock as a bad movie, but then again, if we all agreed on everything life would be pretty dull and this website (Digg, not the linked site) wouldn't be near as popular as it is :) - Frostek, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2I saw it more of a homage to various sci-fi / action movies of the last few decades...
Escape From New York, Mad Max 2, 28 Days Later, and er... Top Gear!
I count it as a slightly guilty pleasure - it's enjoyable action and a reason to munch popcorn... - gskill, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2I pretty much agree with the list.
- graeh, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2holy ***** - you're right. surely it's a christmas miracle!
- Balanced, on 12/27/2008, -1/+3OK: Why?
I'm not disagreeing, just curious. I'll rent Speed racer at some point, but it's really low on the list. -
