Batman Begins has no affilation with any previous Batman films, it's a complete reboot after Burton's decent flicks and Bruckheimer's atrocities the studio decided to just start over from scratch, hench Begins being an origin story. - buddyTECH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The age or the ability for action doesn't matter. Joke was a ringleader, everyone else did his dirty work for the most part. Hamill could pull it off I think. He would be in make-up, mind you. Sean Penn, certainly not. Peter Sarsgaard is who I'd like to see, if Nolan opted for a younger Joker, that is.
- aerospace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think Penn would fit in, either. I can picture Adrien Brody filling the role nicely.
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Jack Nichollson wasn't an extremely funny Joker. The Joker needs to to be someone who can play a crazy crime boss.... becasue that's what the joker was... he was a boss... he had thugs... and he was effing nutso... So i think Penn could be great."
Ditto. The Joker hasn't ever really been a "comedic relief" guy in the comics (well... not since the Golden Age, really). The only time he's really been there for the comedy aspect was in the 1960's TV show.... please, PLEASE don't tell me you guys want a movie like the old Batman movie they made from that lol. - c0dek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thank God for the "block user" feature.
I've been thinking about this ever since the lead-in ending of BB. While not serving as "comic relief," Joker needs to have a dark humor edge to him, the kind of stuff that makes you laugh because you're nervous, kind of like Castor Troy in "Face/Off" - no, I am NOT suggesting Nick Cage for this role, but the actor needs to be physically and verbally bombastic. I know it sounds kind of silly, but I actually think someone like Vince Vaughan, if he's in the makeup and with good direction from Nolan, could bring something to the role with his typical dry humor. The only drawback is that the Joker should be somewhat physically imposing. Yes, he had thugs and goons to do the real dirty work, but throughout the lifetime of the comic, he was the one guy who kept coming back, who could go toe to toe with the Dark Knight. Imagine Tom Cruise from the Oprah show, only twice the height. That's almost close... - mocheeze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone else think Jack Nicholson would be a good choice. ;)
- bish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ooh! Hayden Christiansen!
It's too bad he's leaving the acting world. /sarc - silvertongue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If we're talking facial features, Crispin Glover would certainly do the job. i haven't seen him in movies, so i can't confirm/deny his vocal capabilities. but considering the official buzz about him already working on the movie, i'll go with it. I just hope he can pull off the maniacal laughter that made the Joker the awesome supervillain we all know him to be.
I know Mark Hamill did a wonderful laugh in the animation, but he's too short to play the Joker on-screen. The Joker was a tall and lanky sonofabitch, kinda towered over you in a spindly, evil kinda way. Not the 5' nothing Hamill. he looked short even when he stood on his head in Return of the Jedi.
and don't even think about Jim Carrey. he's a comedian, not a menacing villain. yes, let's all commend his comedic abilities and his quality serious role in The Truman Show. that aside, i think he's in his 40's. a little too old to be tossed around by Christian Bale. at least not like he was tossed around in the comics and animated series. Jack Nicholson wouldn't be able to go toe-to-toe with Bale either.
I'm sorry, but when I think Christopher Walken, I don't think Joker. I think cool and sadistic mobster, someone who will shank you in the back without flinching. Not someone who laughs his maniac head off while he guts you, or grins ear-to-ear as he admires his sadistic handywork at making Robin into a Joker Jr. He rocks as a villain, but not a Joker kind of villain.
Tim Curry is tall, but he's kinda beefy and his face isn't right for it. Too square. The Joker had an angular face, pointed jaw and everything. And if I remember, his voice was too deep to pull off the laugh. The signature Jokerlaugh is a little on the high-side, with a sharp staccato.
Ask this silver tongue who should be the next Joker, it'll say "Crispin Glover" - Liquidos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone ever think of Robin Williams..
- novuslotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they can find an actor who can pull off an evil, maniacal laugh like Mark Hamill did for the Joker character in the animated series and the animated Phantasm movie, without looking ridiculous . . . then I think they'll have done a good casting job. :) Whoever said Brad Pitt, that's actually an intriguing idea - I think he could do it.
But, on Jim Carrey as ANY of the villains in Batman . . . after him being the Riddler, I'm just left with a very sour taste in my mouth. Not too hot on the idea of Steve Carrell being a supervillain . . . I mean, honestly, if you want to make this a deep and dark movie rather than something ridiculous like the old ones . . . Steve Carrell? Jim Carrey? I mean, have we already forgotten how AWFUL "Batman Forever" was???
Oh, and if they name this thing "Batman Attacks" I'm going to shoot myself. Sounds like a freakin' nature show. - tims1979, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mark Hammil was great doing the voice of The Joker in the animated series. I wonder if he would be able to carry that over to a real life role.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh and by the way, THANK CHRIST they're getting rid of Katie Holmes, she was utterly pointless. They could have picked anyone off the street and had the same result.
- stevencombs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Going back to the original comics from the 30s, the Joker was very dark. He killed and left the victims with a hideous smile. I think to continue with the Batman Begins tradition they cast someone dark with no sense of humor, but rather thinks he has a sense of humor. Sean Penn would be perfect. As for Carey, no way! Not serious enough and as mentioned, already been there. As for continuity, there is no continuity, this is a new series not a continuation or prequel of the Tim Burton flicks.
- brainspout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PLEASE, don't try to be funny or bring humour to the role of Joker. What makes Batman Begins the very best Batman film to date is it's dark portrayal of the story. Don't try to be funny, and make the same mistake as the Batman films in the 90's did, please.
- chownrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My vote would go to Crispin Glover. He's the right age, has the right facial features, creepy as hell, and out of his freakin' mind.
- dbspin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Christopher Walkin - I agree he would be great. But he's already been in a batman movie, he played the psychotic business overlord who turned Selina Kyle into Catwoman in Batman Returns.
- uratrtl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about freakin Christopher Walkin?
Oh yeah - brainspout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just read your post chownrus, wow, I never would have thought of Crispin Glover but what a GREAT suggestion.
- JtheNewbie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoever they decide to throw in as the Joker has to have some staying power. I'm thinking they'll keep with the earliest traditions of the Batman comics...the master criminals, the real nuts...they don't die. Slap them in Arkham or stop their plot and wait for their return. Same as they did with Raz Alghoul (spell check, aisle nine) and Scarecrow. And so long as they continue in the same vein as Batman Begins, keeping with the darkness, making it believable stunt-wise, prop-wise, situation-wise, and giving Bruce/Batman equal (if not more) character time as the villains, they can do what they do for a very long time.
- VAXinate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just becasue Penn has been ummm... penned... as a dramatic actor doesn't mean he couldn't pull it off. Remember Penn started out in comedy. He's done more serious roles lately... You have to think... why does the joker have to be funny? Jack Nichollson wasn't an extremely funny Joker. The Joker needs to to be someone who can play a crazy crime boss.... becasue that's what the joker was... he was a boss... he had thugs... and he was effing nutso... So i think Penn could be great. If its true... btw has this supposed sequel even been officially announced?
- sokachung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally, I think that they should look at someone like Jim Carrey, cause he would bring the comedic side to the role, but also the seduistic psychopath side to the character.
- est1984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Brad Pitt. anyone see 12 Monkies? Amazing. i thought he would make a great Carnage in the spider-man series, also.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.villainousvamps.com/crispinjoker.jpg
Crispin is a good suggestion, and apparently, someone else thought the same thing. I'm willing to bet, however, that they'll do Joker without the Green hair and white makeup, if they are trying to kill all the lingering sillyness from the later batman movies. - ApolloCreed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have always thought either Steve Buscemi or Christian Slater would make a great Joker. For those fans of Jack Nicholson in the first Batman movie, Christian Slater is virtually the younger version of him. Same voice, same creepyness. Steve Buscemi just looks like the Joker to me, plus I think he could pull off the character pretty well. The Crispin Glover recommendation is also a good pick. Wouldn't have thought of that myself, but I can picture it.
- bobbies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no no no crazy crazy....all of you......This is how joker should be........they need to get someone who does not need too much make-up....someone with a long narrow shin long pointy nose, and a long wide smile.....If they choose someone that already has those features the joker becomes more relistic and looks scary and freaky looking glover and the guy from kong....i forgot his name but he has a joker chin and a joker longish nose, someone skinnyish and tall they should not put bright white and green makeup, instead they should make it look like skin not lik nicholson makeup...you could tell it was makeup.....they should make it more realistic like they did with begins....make the skin pale and not completely white.....make the joker have phychological problems like have him talk to himself and act wierd and his thugs should be scared of him and he should kill one of his thugs just like nicholson...that makes an audience feel afraid of a character that goes and kills bob, (his favorite goon)......joker should be in the dark , just like john carpanter did with michael myers in halloween.....make the joker, in one of the sceens come out from pit black and slowly you start to see the jokers face emurge, that is definately scary and keeping it a serious as possible that is perfect...........
- big_D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there are lots of good actors but not everybody can play a bad guy. sean penn for example is an excellent actor but I don't think he would do great as the Joker. I think Cristopher Walken would be an excellent choice as would be Willem Dafoe. He is awsome as the green goblin.and why not take jack nicholson again for the role.he is the one and only joker
- scribblin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think Carrey could pull it off--think Riddler's cockiness with Cable Guy's sadism. In fact, if his Mask character would have been a dark, twisted *****, that would be in the ballpark. Carrey's got that fearless thing goin' on where he gets nutty. Yeah, Glover's a freak but I'm not sure he's got the balls for Joker. Penn sounds like a snooze. I think Nicholson brought some nice, sadistic glee to the part. Would have liked to see him tackle it in his Shining days or thereabouts. Here's one from left field -- how about Leguizamo?
- brucetimmfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you guys are all really in the dark.... the joker in the sequal will be a younger one who is wearing a mask until batman knocks him into the acid melting the mask to his face. you should read your mags. and watch the last 5 min. of the movie again....also, christopher nolan has set out to remake ALL of the original batman movies starting with the first.hence the reason that joker is the villan, clayface is also rumored to appear. Crispin Glover is most likley to play the clown prince of crime.http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y72/afitoast/crispinjoker.jpg
- tHeBaT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey....umm chownrus...in the pic of crispin gliver as the joker(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v736/ZCW/TheJokercopy.jpg) u have him holding the joker card...where did u find that pic of the joker card....or did u not actually make that picture of crispin urself?
- big_D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or how about John Travolta. maybe y'all think he can't play a villain but than you might have been mistaken. he does a terrific job playing castor troy in face/off or his role in battlefield earth. I know that movie is kinda crappy but that doesn't take away the fact that he's a good actor. He could defenitely play some psychotic freak like the Joker. And the man can dance!!:plook at saturday night fever. Wouldn't it be awsome to see the Joker dance when he just kicked batman's ass or something like that
- Mattrichards, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0alex albrecht
thats who - rijuco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My vote goes for either Penn, or Glover...check my image.
- no1important, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am not sure who would be a good Joker at this time. Maybe a new up and comer comedic actor thats not too well known yet? I dunno any names off hand but the Joker that would be best could be like the Joker in the "The Batman" animated series.
- fluffhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the most ironic pick for Joker would be to have Michael Keaton in the role. I know this would never happen, for being the original Batman, but I think the hype about it would be amazing. I do support the Crispin Glover Joker begins of his sinister look, but he'd need to work on the voice he would use. Vince Vaughn, I'm a fan of, but I don't think he'd pull of the smile. There is a certain smile need for the Joker, Nicholson's mostly of makeup, that is needed. The one actor, if no one cares about age who could pull of the Joker-esque smile in my opinion is Dennis Quaid. You give him the look from when he played Jerry Lee Lewis, and I think that's the Joker. To bring back Nicholson would be nostalgic, but I don't think he'd be up for it. And to the people supporting the Jim Carrey idea, just ridiculous.
- pugsley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no.. nobody should ever hire jim carry as he is a terrible actor and only 6 year old girls find him funny.. in my opinion on the other hand.. i believe that crispen glover would play an amazing joker, as he is also a rather creepy guy already.. so all of you who say jim carry.. i think you ought to reconsider.. and change your thinking ethics..as he already did a terrible job at the riddler..

I dunno' bout that TheCount, the scene where she's standing outside the burned Wayne mansion, in the strong wind, wearing that silk shirt, apparently attempting to smuggle a couple of pencil erasers, that scene had a rather profound effect on me.
lol - chownrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crispin is becoming a popular choice. Looks like someone had some fun w/ photoshop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v736/ZCW/Joker-Crispincopy.jpg - trump48257, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't one Batman movie enough for Carrey?
- amh0084, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0see, i did a search recently on google, and i found a picture of a dude in full joker make-up that I had never seen before. i think the next joker, if its true that there will be a joker in the sequel, is chris eccelson (i think i spelled the name correctly), the guy who played Raymond Calitri in "Gone in 60 Seconds."
- cam18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually Batman Begins has nothing to do with the other Batman movies
- jebus45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with Crispin Glover as the joker. But another actor comes to mind. He's a a somewhat low key actor. Tall, skinny, a grin ear to ear, and just sadistic looking all together. if this at all in some way shape or form describes what were all looking for in the joker, then i think Clifton Collins Jr. would be a near perfect choice. It's a toss up between Glover and Collins. just my opinion though.
- trump48257, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Continuity? Did you watch Batman Begins? Or even read the titile?
- trump48257, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tom Cruise anyone? No...wait....we don't want anyone that crazy. We're only looking for a person to play a raving loonatic.
- joamox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I mentioned this article to a friend and he said Sam Rockwell would be a fabulous joker. I totally agree with him. Come on, he has a great smile for the part.
- stlroughneck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I read/heard that it was a positve that Steve Carrell (the 40 year old virgin) was going to play The Joker. I think he would be fairly good compared to the other chioces. Jim Carrey was already the Riddler, Jack Nicholson, while an amazing actor, didnt to a very good joker, and Sean Penn, why in the world. Also, the Batman Begins sequel is going to have to be considered a remake of the orginal meaning the joker died.
- ltraviper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just to be funny let the Joker be Jay Leno, he's got the chin ! ha ha no really though... ... Joker needs to be set not as a popular actor but in the acting of the person chosen. What does that mean ? Meaning that this is a new movie series, so the look is not so important, like the first one, who knew the geeky looking dude was the Scarecrow, thus with all the other characters, let them be know, but nothing defining in their faces or makeup would be needed, the acting needs to be there, Joker should be sinister, near evil, worst of the worst, this needs to show why he acts this way and the moment that he decides to add a gross-sick humorous laugh when he does the evil deeds he gets known for. Not like the first movie, with makeup or chemical, now the chemicals that affected his face and appearance should be subtle, not as glamorous as the makeup Jack N. wore in Batman (1). And finally, keep the darn villains alive, put them away in Arkam, keep them there and DON'T KILL THEM OFF, more money in the future if they live !
Ltraviper - WaltonRebecca81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I think Johnny Depp would make a terrific joker, he is tall and skinny like the character in the original comics. He also in himself is a very dark and sinister person, I think he could play the joker with the right mix of silliness and psychoticness. I see the "new" joker looking similar to the original, but with hair that is a darker shade of green, pale skin, and blood red lips, they should use a darker color palette al together. I would like to see Denzel Washington as two-face, I also want a return of catwoman, after seeing Mr and Mrs Smith, and seeing Angelina Jolie in tight vinyl I nominate her for the part, followed by Rosario Dawson as a close second (I saw her in tight vinyl in Sin City). I think Steve Buscemi would make a terrific riddler, Rachel McAdams as Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and the penguin would be difficult, I think Danny Devito was perfect, I can't imagine any one else, Poison Ivy, hmmmm, maybe if Angelina Jolie didn't get the role of catwoman, maybe she could pull that off, whoever plays Poison Ivy needs to be very seductive and Angelina is sex personified.
