- Remmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's sad that we live in a country where the government is dicated by the movie and music industries. What they don't realize is the more they try to stop people, the better the anonymous solutions will become.
The RIAA/MPAA/BSA all need to be boycotted. Sadly, we are a nation that thrives on media and we don't have the balls to make a real difference. - Pogue_Mahone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't mind it being illegal to download copyrighted material. Especially if its being illegally sold.
But the jail sentences are so phenomenally out of what its unbelievable. The sentencing falls into the area that armed robbers get! Not to mention violent crimes like felony assault and rape.
So if you download a movie using Bittorrent, and you're making it available for others but you have no intention of selling it have no prior record you could wind up with 12 months in jail, and therefore staying longer than the guy who robbed the bank at gunpoint or who ran over your grandmother while drunk.
Insane. - Voide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Any other president would have signed it. Just because he approved the law, doesn't mean he created it.
- Drood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Downloading MP3's is still currently legal in Canada I think. (Can't remember if the recent legal nonsense has changed that.) I know it was declared legal because we pay a levy on all blank CD's. (Though not on DVD's interestingly.)
This is insane though. If you're downloading and selling stuff for profit then fair play. Throw away the key. But merely having something in your shared folder? (So like when you've finished a download in Emule for example.) That's insane.
As an artist myself, I have no problems with people copying my work so long A) They leave my name intact, B) don't try and claim as their own, and C) Don't make money off it.
Anyone who thinks this isn't insane needs a reality check. You could go out, grab the first comely lass that walks by, rape her, smack her around, turn yourself in... And you'll get off with a lighter sentence than you would for having Revenge of the Sith in your shared folder.
If you don't think that's nuts, then I would love to know what color the sky is in your world, since you're most certainly not a contributing member of this reality. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
I just love your political system. Who are the House Of Representatives (wHORes) really representing? Politicians are supposed to represent their constituents and yet they all bend over for some PAC money. These prostitutes need to be taught a lesson. Vote them out of office and vote in real representatives. Your constitutional rights are being taken away from you one by one. Do something about it. - crazaalex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Internet pirates with prerelease movies in their shared folders will face stiffer federal penalties starting Monday."
just don't save it in your "shared" folder. - aran86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's better to wait for the movie to come out on dvd and then physically steal it yourself from the nearest store. That way it's higher quality and if you happen to get caught you're still better off then if you got caught downloading it.
- keksovkeks, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1anonymous surfing and anonymous mp3 downloads http://vprivatenetwork.com/index.php?action=config
- crazyfan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What freedom? You have to BUY these goods to actually own those agreenments. There is no such freedom of stealing.
- ryanpc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First: What does this story have to do with bit torrent.. why should its users be "scared" more than any other network(s)?
Second: Notice the quoted "being prepared for commercial distribution" -- are you *seriously* arguing against this? I'm as anti-RIAA/MPAA as anyone else.. but where on earth do you get your sense of entitlement from? Do tell... - kabukie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Notice the story says the law is supported by 'large media' organizations....
the small indy labels who actually pay the artists more than .1% of profits have a somewhat different say about downloading media.... - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They give tougher sentences to anyone doing illegal stuff on computers than they do for murderers! ... friggen stupid
- Cadaver69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It says "Being prepared for commercial distribution" How are we supposed to know what is being prepared. I want to know when I can get Brisco County Jr. on DVD
- Mark_H, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2To steal, you need to gain something and the other person (or company, or whatever) needs to lose something. If I steal ten bucks from some guy, he's ten bucks poorer because of it. If I download a song, the artist loses nothing.
- doofus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They are taking away your freedom. Your freedom to download copyrighted content. I think its time for a revolution.
- CygnusXII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Best legislation money can buy. tsk..tsk..tsk.. Welcome to the Corporate States of America.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Time to set up a proxy and use Peerguardian with updated lists.
- Fantt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Demand for entertainment is sooooo high that people are downloading gigs and gigs of it and the response of the people who could be making money off of this is to put us in jail. All it would take is some creative thought to come up with a system to allow me to download Dr Who or that episode of Lost that I missed legally for a sane price.
Just because us geeks don't fall into line like the average sheeple, it doesn't make us terrorists. Just give us a viable alternative. For many people iTunes is a viable alternative to downloading the songs freely. The same should be done with video entertainment.
The MPAA's window of opportunity is quickly closing as more and more quality entertainment is released on-line for free. - _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually, I agree with this. People, wait until the material in question is officially released, THEN download it. :P
- sporkman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3lets blame this on jack thompson

My point exactly. 1984 is coming to life and people find it perfectly acceptable. Our government is supposed to work for us, not the music and movie industries. Osama Bin Laden is still at large, but screw that. Mrs. Leonora Johnson of Anytown, New York just downloaded a Weezer tune! Take her down boys! - Juke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Prison is not a good solution.
- markperia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It wouldnt affect anime torrents now would it?
Sorry I haven't read the article yet. - mrtibbs309, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Think again, I got an email just after I downloaded my first and last movie (Corpse Bride) using bit torrent from my ISP. They attached an email from the production company demanding my connection to the Internet disabled and my name forwarded to them for legal action. They told me to remove the file from my system and let them know when it was done. So I did it and that was the end of it. Scared the hell out of me too.
Who's your ISP? - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0“They give tougher sentences to anyone doing illegal stuff on computers than they do for murderers! ... friggen stupid “
The *****?
Murderers enjoy being ass raped for life in a maximum security prisons, but nice try strawman? - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RichMan, the hell are you talking about... anime is illegal in canada.
How is it illegal? - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, so many stupid 14 year old *****...
You don't DESERVE anything for free to begin with but regardless,
THIS LAW DEALS WITH SPREADING MOVIES THAT HAVEN'T EVEN COME OUT YET
WHAT ***** REASONS COULD YOU HAVE FOR DISTRIBUTING A MOVIE THAT HASN'T EVEN COME OUT IN THEATERS YET????
It's theft, there's no way you could have gotten it without stealing it, and downloading it you know full well it was stolen, so you're both engaging in the trafficking of stolen merchandise...
God people are dumb. :-/ - thearchitect, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This should come as no surprise, the USA had been a country "For the corporations, by the corporations" ever since the industrial revolution.
Wake up, or learn to enjoy being a slave. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 wrote: "forget about drugs, rape, murder, fruad, etc... lets focus on copyright infrindgment"
As a rule, people who are on the receiving end of drug related crime, or who are raped, murdered or defrauded don't have lobbyists with briefcases full of cash. Therefore, they get screwed. - Crazy_8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I understand that bittorrent has come to be a big problem with items that are ilegaly downloaded, but *****, "bad news for torrent users" you make it sound like BT is the ONLY thing used to distribute ilegal content! Thats not even close to true, there are plently of other P2P networks.
- Acill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Torrent users have nothing to worry about. People who use P2P technology to pirate copyrighted materials need to worry.
- mydiggname, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People need to actually read the Constitution and Bill of Rights and realize the people have more power than government and use that power (i.e. JURORS, they can review the merits of a case and override the judge and current law {most people have no clue what their rights are}Georgia vs Brailsford., US vs Dougherty 1972)
The people are the masters of both Congress and courts, not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert it. - Abraham Lincoln
There is nothing more terrifying than ignorance in action. - Goethe
To embarrass justice by a multiplicity of laws, or to hazard it by confidence in judges, are the opposites rocks on which all institutions have been wrecked. - Johnson @ Minnesota State Capitol
VOTE PEOPLE!!!......and get these idiots out of office!
CALL YOUR CONGRESS PEOPLE, they care about voters......not people
REALIZE THAT JURORS CAN RENDER THESE CASES USLESS.
GET THE WORD OUT PEOPLE.....take back your government.
That is all. - AHIGHERGOD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0“They give tougher sentences to anyone doing illegal stuff on computers than they do for murderers! ... friggen stupid “
Do you actually think the government cares about humans murdering humans? No no no, the corporate dollar is much more meaningful. And good coin is made on those prisons too. Someone owns them and they make money per prisoner. - hoodedrobin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"forget about drugs, rape, murder, fraud, etc... lets focus on copyright infringement"
My thoughts exactly... you forgot failing war though.
I think people should wait till the CD comes out though, cause that does take money away from bands. Even though they don't make as much money on Cd's they still get a portion. - OswaldKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Another change in the sentencing guidelines alters the definition of "uploading" to make it clear that merely having a copyright file available in a shared folder--such as those used by popular file-swapping programs like Kazaa and BearShare--can count as illegal distribution."
What defines a "shared folder?" If I have a movie in a folder and someone downloads it from me without my permission, I can be prosecuted? What if I delete the shared Kazaa folder and direct the program to another folder? Am I safe? I don't see this holding up in court. - thejadedmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's better to wait for the movie to come out on dvd and then physically steal it yourself from the nearest store. Holy cow you're right..wowzers - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never understood why people pirate big budget Hollywood trash anyway. It's coming to a theatre near you--so why pirate it?

- M4K3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why does government always think MORE government is alawys the answer? Keep voting Republicrat people.
Vote Republicrat america and go back to bed, your government has it all under control. - suicidal-kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, now i'm scared.
- Niten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All relevancy aside, I think the title of this story is misleading. Many of us use Bittorrent for perfectly legal purposes.
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Problem solved. Go to a minimun security prison. Use the prison computers to download stuff. Set up multiple Google accounts and store it there!
- thejadedmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could someone please explain to me how this is an emergency? I mean, sure, the RIAA is losing money, but that doesnt mean that the US is in such danger that the gov would need to make an emergency anything to stay alive...***** YOU RIAA.
- Smiles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Remmy, they're not equating file sharing with terrorism. If you actually read the summary of the guidelines, you'd have noticed that they pertain to: "(A) section 105 of the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act of 2005, Pub. L. 109–9 (the "FECA"); and (B) the United States Parole Commission Extension and Sentencing Commission Authority Act of 2005, Pub. L. 109–76 (pertaining to the directive in section 6703 of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, Pub. L. 108–458)". They issued guidelines for two things at once.
