- FinestCall, on 03/19/2008, -1/+75I used to work at a century theater... we dumped bags loaded with popcorn at the end of the day. I felt so ***** I started to give away free refills ... then I got fired.
- KraftDinner101, on 03/19/2008, -4/+66Hey, how about movie studios stop paying actors 20+ mil per film? But that will never happen.
- saucypony, on 03/19/2008, -9/+66"Popcorn's getting more expensive as corn is increasingly used for ethanol production."
No.No.No! Where are people getting this misconception that there is only one type of corn? The corn used to make popcorn is quite different than the corn that is converted to ethanol. - Namakemono, on 03/19/2008, -5/+52The price, along with the ***** experience, namely the ***** all around you, are just some of the reasons why I do not go to the movies anymore. Haven't been in at least 5 years and I do NOT miss it. My system at home satisfies me just fine.
- quomen, on 03/19/2008, -1/+32Does anyone every buy the food at theatres?
The price of a 20oz soda at my theater is about 4-5 dollars. I can buy a gallon and a half of gas with that.
So hopefully the answer is, ***** no. - DrDash, on 03/19/2008, -0/+26The theater i worked for we wanted to donate it to the homeless... we called the corporate office. Turns out they did that way back in the day, then got sued when some of them hurt thier teeth!!! So in turn we could not give it away. Gotta love the system.
- phybere, on 03/19/2008, -0/+24I think the idea is that more farmers are growing the "ethanol corn" than the "popcorn corn", therefore reducing the supply of "popcorn corn" which raises the price.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -0/+19I don't even buy ***** popcorn and I still have to pay 10 to get in a movie.
- charlie55, on 03/19/2008, -0/+19and yet the price of popcorn at the grocery store remains mysteriously low.
if you markup popcorn 1000%, then a 20% rise in corn prices doesnt hurt you much. - mywhitenoise, on 03/19/2008, -2/+18Who wants to pay $10 a ticket for loud obnoxious kids, popcorn farts, candy on your shoes, horrible picture with audio cranked up way too loud, when you could watch it on a better screen, with better sound in the comfort of your house for a $10 DVD, or $15 Blu-Ray?
- mysedai, on 03/19/2008, -2/+18Yeah, but when you give a little something, people come to believe they are entitled to a little something. If the customer believes they are entitled to free refills with their small popcorn they will never buy a large.
I ran a movie theatre for ___Mike for almost six years and I am still floored at the sense of entitlement people have. Ten times a day, I had to listen to some bitch tennis wife or irate retiree tell me all the reasons they were above the established rules. I promise you, I've heard every excuse in the world ranging from "You have to let me bring in my own bottled water, my herbalist says I can only drink this kind (holds up Sam's Club bottled water) to "Well, if I buy a large popcorn with free refills, why can't I have ten small bags to put it in?".
In short, no, you can't give people anything because then they will expect everything. - SAc0balt, on 03/19/2008, -1/+16I've never understood that mentality. Same goes for many fast food businesses. Anything not eaten at the end of the day goes right to the dumpster. If a profit is lost regardless, then I see no harm in giving a little something to the people.
- tucsonsun13, on 03/19/2008, -0/+14I'm a big fan of movie-theatre popcorn. Nothing can match its complex synthetic buttery taste. I'll deal with the health repercussions when they present themselves..........
- Jennefah, on 03/19/2008, -0/+14You binned it all at the end of the night? I'm surprised because at the cinema where I used to work we were told to put it in big plastic sacks to be sold the next day. The same with nachos still on display and anything similar.
It wasn't a very classy establishment though... the popcorn the customers ended up eating had usually been popped at least two weeks earlier. - limeaid, on 03/19/2008, -0/+14Don't blame this on the popcorn
All your expenditures are wrapped up in big name salaries
The reason movies are expensive is because they pay $20 million dollars to Eddie Murphy for Pluto Nash and $70 million to Tom Cruise for War of the Worlds
How about you gives us no name actors at a discount and a good story and we'll go see it
HTH - Ranvier, on 03/19/2008, -1/+14Am I the only who read, "Another reason why the movies are so 'asassa' expensive?"
- manstein01, on 03/19/2008, -0/+13Yeah, imagine if theaters cannot make money off of a $7 pack of reeses, and start closing. Then movie studios have less customers, and need to cut back on production. That means fewer movies people. Think about how empty your life will be next year when "College Road Trip 2" is never made. I for one would be horrified beyond belief. So please, the next time you go to the movies, start forking over $20 for a bag of popcorn for you and the persons behind you in line.
- bimtott, on 03/19/2008, -3/+16Ethanol can kiss my ass. What a stupid ***** idea.
- yikiad, on 03/19/2008, -0/+13true, but the corn farmers are switching their crops to the the kind used for ethanol, hence, the higher price.
- mcaaronice, on 03/19/2008, -0/+13You do realize that the popcorn at a theater costs only a few cents for the entire bag. Maybe if movie prices had only gone up 5 cents then you could attempt to make the connection.
- stellarceltic, on 03/19/2008, -0/+12a digg user pretending he gets blown in movie theaters = lonely
- coit, on 03/19/2008, -0/+12My wife has a big purse.
- nogami, on 03/19/2008, -0/+12We only go to "big" movies in theatres. Everything else is watched at home.
When we go to the theater, we try and always go out for a nice dinner beforehand - we get a good meal and when we arrive for the movie, we're already full, and don't want anything else to eat. They get ticket prices, but that's it. - mknoll1, on 03/19/2008, -1/+12Large popcorn = $6.00
Bushel of corn = $5.25
A bushel is ~150 cups of unpopped corn or 56 lbs. A cup of airpopped popcorn is 8 grams. Assuming generously that a large popcorn is 2 gallons by volume or 32 cups you get .8grams*32 cups = 256 grams or a little bit more than 9 oz. At $5.25/56 lbs or $0.09375/lb the popcorn works out to about $0.0572 for the popcorn used in creatign a "large popcorn". - flange, on 03/19/2008, -0/+11I think the point is not that actors don't deserve the money as much as it is that the studios are too focused on using star power to draw audiences in. Worse, the big name star often is ill-suited for the role. I don't really want to see Angelina Jolie butcher a British accent when a British actress could do a better job for much less money.
George Lucas proved that you don't need star power to draw crowds if you have a fun and entertaining story back with the original Star Wars. At that time, Harrison Ford was a complete unknown, as was much of the main cast. - Jade10145, on 03/19/2008, -0/+10Buy munchies at the store and put them in your coat, simple as that
- BinaryFragger, on 03/19/2008, -0/+10Back in my fast food days, some people got fired for eating extra food at the end of the day -- food that was destined for the dumpster.
We would usually throw out a couple pounds of fries and at least a dozen beef burger patties everyday, as well as a couple of chicken burgers. The rule was we HAD to throw it out.
It's unreal the amount of food that gets wasted in restaurants. - phybere, on 03/19/2008, -1/+11Why do people ask this? Don't question the digg algorithm, it's blasphemy.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -2/+11Yes. Darn those excuses that prevent companies from getting sued for millions. Shame on them! They should just give all their money away anyway! Yay communism!
- Treason, on 03/19/2008, -2/+11I buried all of you.
- marksism, on 03/19/2008, -1/+10"Where are people getting this misconception that there is only one type of corn?"
SOMEONE'S from Iowa! - coit, on 03/19/2008, -5/+14That's because you can't get a date.
- LilBoyLuver, on 03/19/2008, -3/+11Yes! This is one of my favorite arguments of all time, it is like when people bitch about how much Roger Clemens makes. ***** supply and demand.
- joegibes, on 03/19/2008, -0/+8...and in winter here in Wisconsin, my big parka can fit ~4 cans of soda, plus $0.80 boxes of candy from the grocery store down the street.
- Namakemono, on 03/19/2008, -1/+9Not to mention that phucker that keeps kicking your seat!
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -1/+8the price of corn used in movie popcorn, even when its at the price it is now, is about 1/100th the price they charge you.
- slapded, on 03/19/2008, -1/+8what about HD-DVD? oh wait. *****
- Jennefah, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7Oh I hate the movies as a first date. How can you possibly get to know your date if you can't talk to them without someone shushing you?
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7I will subscribe to your agenda. I agree.
- smergs, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7"Young people will forever chose the movies as a first date option"
I'm married now but if I was still dating I would say screw that. You can go out for a pretty nice dinner and have time to actually get to know the person instead of going to the movies and not talking to each other. - Stemnin, on 03/19/2008, -1/+7The farm isn't big enough for the both of us. -said the ethanol corn to popcorn
- vypergts, on 03/19/2008, -1/+7If you changed that from "dinner" to "lunch" then you'd only have to pay the matinée price...
- justjayce, on 03/19/2008, -1/+7Why is it that we aren't using sugar to make ethanol? its much more efficient and cheap.. I remember now - for the same reason your Pepsi is sweetened with corn syrup - powerful lobbyists and cronyism.
- tremor_tj, on 03/19/2008, -0/+6They already have. The buttery flavor they've been using is a carcinogen.
- AngryAngryBrian, on 03/19/2008, -1/+7Desperate movies need to pull in starts, good movies make them.
- jmkiii, on 03/19/2008, -0/+6My friend has a beat box. It goes wiki-wiki-wiki-scratch.
- richmessenger, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5It's like $15 here. I went to see Semi-Pro (waste of money), which was the first time I've gone to the movies since Transformers, and spent $25 ($9.50 for a drink and nachos). I'm glad that the internet has created a loophole around the supply and demand issue of ticket prices. The next Batman movie will probably be the only one I pay to see in '08.
- TexasShiv, on 03/19/2008, -8/+13Oh looook at me EVERYONE, I don't go to the movies, I'm a hard ass! I have broad band at home and I do things my own way!
Jesus Christ, get over yourselves. Going to the movies, and getting a bucket of popcorn is an American tradition to me, just as much as apple pie and baseball is. Young people will forever chose the movies as a first date option, and just going with friends to experience a ***** summer blockbuster is still a fun experience. The standing in line, the hype of the big screen, the scream of everyone in the theatre doing during the movie is something that cannot be produced at home.
Get out of your homes a little, please. - deacont23, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5FTA - "As a consequence of the booming demand for alternative fuels – with farmers replanting acres of popcorn with more profitable crops that can be converted into ethanol and other biofuels"
The submitter is wrong. The article has it right. - Namakemono, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5Most of the US doesn't have the climate to grow sugarcane.
