- PrometheusZero, on 08/28/2008, -0/+29If Ledger did not pass away, the movie would still not have catapulted into obscurity. His death simply even made it a greater success then it would have been. It's a sequel to an already successful movie (and franchise), why the hell wouldn't it be successful.
- SevenTwo, on 08/28/2008, -0/+19It 'was' all part of the plan...

- Whatsthetimecod, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7I love how everyone looks at this and thinks of all the negatives like, this is just more marketing, spam, and I bet the studios are glad he died.... Who cares!
He loved the movie. This seems like it was a great achievement for him, his family knew that and wanted people to spread the word. I don't mind all the pop ups and articles. I would much rather see anything art related as a side page ad/pop-up/banner then sexy singles are only located a mile away ads everywhere. - Aitese, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6Soul Men to be released in November will not be a hugh hit...TWO of it's actors have died in the last month.

(Don't worry...Samuel L is fine) - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -1/+6whoa, I remember this movie. good times

- perre, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Not a single mention of the ARG by 42 Entertainment? Missing some anatomy...
- Narcism, on 08/28/2008, -10/+12"Have one of the lead actors die beforehand" is mysteriously absent
- Aruna, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2How do you know the detonator wasn't rigged to their own boat?
- pcpimpster, on 08/29/2008, -0/+2I'm talking box office prowess and money made compared to that of The Dark Knight.
Star Wars, the original and Titanic are in that realm.
I liked the teddy bears regardless but that was not my point you bonehead. - d4ni, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I agree on #8 though, it's completely unrealistic people would rather die than blowing up that other boat full of criminals, and obviously criminals wouldn't have a problem blowing up a boat full of people to save their own lives. That didn't make a lot of sense. If this ever occurs in real life (highly unlikely ;) then expect either one of the boats to blow up after 1 minute.
Your other points don't make that much sense, I liked the movie and the ending was fine. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -2/+4Thanks for playing senior flamer.
You can reason all points except number six. Batman transforming himself into a dark knight is far better than people cheering him on in the streets. - Apocalyptic0n3, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3Commence the Batman bashing... now.
- Kelmon, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3If it helps, I was a fan of Heath Ledger and I don't think The Dark Knight was actually much good as a film. I do blame the hype a lot for this. I suspect if I'd known nothing about the film and went to see it then I'd have been fairly satisfied. Unfortunately, the endless hype seemed to suggest that the film was the best thing since sliced bread; it wasn't and I left the cinema feeling unsatisfied.
Batman Begins was a much better film and I enjoyed A Knights Tale much more than The Dark Knight as a Heath Ledger film. That said, his role as the Joker was very good and it's a shame he wasn't on-screen more. - MightyLime, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2TDK only came out on August 24th where I live.
- Blandyman, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Started to read, had no idea what it was, let it go.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2It was a good movie and people liked it; therefore, people saw it more than once, which henceforth in factionalism made the movie more frackin beefcake.
Aight? - hamobu, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1While there is some validity to "dark night" argument, I would make that a minor feature of the movie, and not the point of the movie. After all that action, carnage, philosophy and heavy emotional sacrifice, this ending seems a bit prosaic, trite and unconnected to the rest of the movie.
- Kazbaeden, on 08/28/2008, -3/+4No one said anything about catapulting into obscurity. It would still have been a great hit, as it was heavily promoted and its predecessor was received so well, but I doubt it would have been the juggernaut that it is.
Also it helps to have Christian Bale, my favorite actor of all time. - CFFL23, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1i watched it a lot because of the schedules my friends had. we couldnt all go see it at once, and I got no fewer than 9 rain checks when the original time I went to see it (the 12:05) was canceled. not to mention no other movies peaked my interest at the time. (I ended up seeing it 4 times for a total of $7.50 spent.)
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1What Warner Brothers needs to do now to beat Titanic is do a re-release to theaters a few weeks after it leaves theaters. That's what Titanic did, and it worked!
- unAntimatter, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Nice pic brosef... thief. =)
- damack, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I think the cast did do a lot to promote it. It wasn't really Heath Ledgers death that made me go watch it it's just how damn well he acted out the joker.
His performance was nothing short of mind blowing. - VinnieDaMac, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2Anatomy of a Hit: Tons of free publicity from one of your stars who recently died.
- randomstupid, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1way overhyped . it really wasn't that great a movie for me... fragmented, unfocused, egocentric, and boring in parts . the only thing that saved it was ... uh ... actually not sure .
theres a lot of better movies out there . - mcsenget, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1Are you suggesting that I leave my friend - who I have known for 12 years - in the jungle in Vietnam so that he can die and so that I can collect the insurance money and get a G5 jet?
Yes. That's exactly what I'm suggesting. - ajb2015, on 09/01/2008, -0/+1overrated.
- Blandyman, on 08/28/2008, -0/+11) Getting actors who do the movie then all die would actually make probably no one watch it assuming there's some sort of supernatural Ring-style stigma.
2) You're really a loser for seeing it 4 times. Sorry, but at $9 a ticket, that's at least $36 to see it 4 times, not to mention the price of IMAX tickets or your local cinema. I would watch it a few times every now and again on Blu-Ray or DVD, but 4 times in theatres? Come on. - fquednau, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Yup, it's a black swan. It's anatomy is irrelevant. In retrospect it all makes sense (business as usual). Its huge success was somewhat expected, but surely not its magnitude.
- dsmx, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1More to the point even the most hardened criminal I doubt would want to be responsible for killings 100's if not thousands of people.
- d4ni, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Wow you can actually remember events from like, 2 months ago?
- darwinwins, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Star Wars? Really? The series that ended with goddamn teddy bears taking down the empire?! TEDDY BEARS.
- BXRWXR, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1OK.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I still haven't seen it yet. I'd like to, but it's hard to get out when you school and children.
- zenden1, on 08/28/2008, -1/+1The Dark Knight deserves the succes ,it's great film and i think it has a great chance to be the 4th film to gross a 1 billion $
My only concern was that it wouldn't be a hit outside US,Canada and Australia(although things are getting better worldwide
This film had everything in it's favor including the tragic death of Heath (in my opinion he transformed this movie in a masterpiece)
I'm sure the Dark knight will gross 500 million in US and Canada and reach 1 billion worldwide
It deserves every dollar it grosses a great movie ,marketing campaign and cast - eatsleeptrumpet, on 08/28/2008, -5/+5The impact this movie has had is incredible. I see maybe five movies per year in theaters, but for some reason I've found myself going to see this on four separate occasions already. Some friends and I wanted to go see it in IMAX at Times Square the other day, but it was SOLD OUT... More than two months after it's release.
Here's how you make a hit: cast your movies with terminally ill, depressed, or daredevil actors. You can't beat a tagline like "EVERYBODY IN THIS MOVIE IS DEAD!" - fillesy, on 08/30/2008, -0/+0I quote:
"The Dark Knight was good but flawed in a lot of ways. It was definitely no Star Wars or Titanic as far as special effects, quality and story."
You didn't mention box office prowess, money made or anything like that in that sentence.
Now about the things you've mentioned:
Special effects? Exactly what would you have wanted to see in Dark Knight? Lightsabers? Animated characters? Ships breaking in two? Hope not.
Quality? Quality of what? Did you even see Star Wars? (original 3 piece crap included)
Story? Now you are really making me laugh.
Please... - pcpimpster, on 08/28/2008, -2/+2Here is a simple formula for making a box office smash like The Dark Knight.
Hire a really talented actor to play the best character in that movie then cap his ass about three months before the movie comes out.
The Dark Knight was good but flawed in a lot of ways. It was definitely no Star Wars or Titanic as far as special effects, quality and story. Without Ledgers death this movie would have matched Iron Man and that's about it.
And i even saw it at IMax - RegalBegal, on 08/28/2008, -5/+5Heath's death is what made it the box office smash it was. It was a good movie to begin with but that fact is what brought people who might not of went to see it into theaters.
- hamobu, on 08/28/2008, -7/+6Spoiler alert:
IMHO, the movie should have ended when Joker won. These are the reasons why:
1. In the beginning of the movie, Batman had cleaned the city and made everybody feel high. To have Joker ruin all that and restore balance to Gotham would provide a nice symmetry.
2. Joker winning would be unpredictable, realistic, and would give more credence to Joker. If joker looses in every movie, than he is a joke.
3. The stage was set for the rise of twoface
4. After joker destroyed Harvey Dent, killed the girl and generally whooped ass, the movie was over. There was simply nothing more worth wile to say.
5. Having two villains running around movie screen was too much.
6. The ending as it is now - where Batman sacrifices his reputation for greater good – is stupid and cheesy.
7. The idea of Joker, setting up elaborate experiment to prove a point about human nature, is kind of silly.
8. The fact that people on one boat did not blow up people on another boat to prove that people are basically good is vomit inducing crap. - jamesdew, on 08/28/2008, -2/+1I didn't even realise Bernie Mac was dead.
- Auran98, on 08/28/2008, -3/+2Oh wait, no i don't!
- derpoopflinger, on 08/28/2008, -4/+3the movie is out, everyone has seen it, now shut up with this crap. waaaay to much hype for this movie.
- doshindude, on 08/28/2008, -4/+3I honestly thought this movie was really overrated....I never was a fan of Ledger before this (didn't really know who he was) and after seeing the movie I still am not. Both main characters just seemed to growl at each other for 2.5 hours.
- zomgwtfninjabbq, on 08/28/2008, -2/+0Did you really just compare Dark Knight to Titanic? Titanic had some of the worst acting I ever saw in my life. Leonardo Dicrapio couldn't act his way out a paper bag ( I did like him in other movies I.E. Aviator). Sure it was based on a true story but still did that 3 hour bore fest really deserve to make that much money.
- GhostM, on 08/28/2008, -4/+2make good movie, cash in
