- BasouKazuma, on 10/12/2007, -10/+42I'm going to tell it like it is, 80% of Anime just plain sucks. Most of these "Anime Fans" don't know ***** about anime. They all just go watch the mainstream Anime like Bleach and Naruto all the while thinking it's the greatest thing ever made by man. These Anime are nothing more than a little mindless fun. There's no substance to them. I don't care if you watch them, but at least watch the better stuff first.
There are Anime that doesnt contain all that pointless sexual innuendo and the same old jokes. Monster, Kino's Travels, Mushishi, Fantastic Children (gay name, i know), Now and Then Here and There, Ghost in the Shell (Movies/Series), Grave of the Fireflies, Mind Game, Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, etc. These are the ultimate form of Anime but I'm sure most Anime fans don't even know about half of them or havent bothered to watch them. They deal with more realistic issues, exploration of self, general philosophy and they have well thought out stories. There's just no comparison to the crap that's popular and mainstream. - Bahimiron, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Yes, yes. You're way, way cooler than anyone else. You wear a Bleach t-shirt and it blows the minds of everyone who sees you. You like to wear a hat with ears on it. You sleep with a five foot long inflatable pillow with characters from InuYasha on it. You cram pocky down your throat and beat it to pictures of octopoid-on-schoolgirl action.
We get it. Which is why we're all slowly edging away from you. - levyjl1988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What the ***** happened with all those comments dugg down, man this ***** loser has lots of time, digging people's comments down...
- MMilitia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Actually there were two; tentacle and regular.
- Johny900, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away were really well done. I haven't seen any of Hayao Miyazaki's latest films or shorts but he definitely should have had some kind of recognition.

- orangery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1lol bunch of anime retards digging down comments... you fail at life too.
- darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Final Fantasy won best feature, WOW. I love anime, but FF was one of the worst films I had ever seen in my life!
I also agree that most people juat watch crap like Naruto, (although Bleach is all right)
and how can they ignore Miyazaki!? I love all of his films. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I love anime, pretty much all of it. One of my favourites is Naruto! I agree with Darksoul that everyone who has been putting down anime like Naruto and Bleach should really try watching it again. Maybe you missed parts? If you haven't seen a variety of anime, and may have been living a sheltered life in a hole somewhere, you can check them out at http://www.FreeMovieMall.com
It's funny how easily people are to trash anime and the creators of anime, even though it would be impossible for most of those people to create something even close to the talent it takes to make any kind of anime. I'm not saying that ALL anime is good. But of course there's going to be different levels of excellence in anime making, as there is with anything else. Give the guys a break for godsake! - garyblock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is why I will never say I'm an anime fan.
Of the thousands of anime films and series released in Japan, a handful of them happen to comprise my favorite movies and TV shows. The vast majority of anime, however, is complete/utter *****, and the vast majority of anime fans are ***** idiots.
"There was only a single slot for 'Best Manga' (Fruits Basket), with the rest consisting of American voice actor awards, packaging and music."
The only award American voice actors should get is a bullet to the back of the head. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Anime in general fails at life
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Wow I chose 2 bad examples. I chose 2 things that we're all over the news, every TV station, in the papers and radio.. AS AN EXAMPLE. It doesn't matter what the news is... And I did mention that in my original post.
We're both Australian, and he barely knew who Steve Irwin (he knew him just as the crocodile guy) was... Let alone his death.
I enjoy celebrity gossip as much as I like putting needles in my eye. I just chose them as examples because major news HERE is different to that in the US. If I started talking about some major news that happened here, 90% of you would have no idea what I was talking about. And since the only news that US exports is celebrity *****, thats what I went with.
The point is: No, he isn't hurting anyone. But he is a drain on society. He is 25 years old, never been with a woman, has a ***** job. He failed life. - TheUngod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Sadly the problem is most Americans never get to see any of the good anime, because it never comes over here. The anime that tends to get translated into english is usually pretty awful, and many of us Americans are too damn lazy to read subs. The only people who really have the chance to see GOOD anime are the ones with lots of money to pay for import DVD's, or the pirates. Adult Swim, while I enjoy most of it, has some of the most awful anime I've ever seen. My hope is at some point they officially release "Death Note" in the US so the rest of the country can enjoy the amazing series that I am currently downloading as each episode becomes subbed.
- thestuffmeister, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7I'm saddened by the poor quality of the comments. So I'll just pretend that none of them ever were posted.
IMHO, there are huge problems with American versions of anime that are shown on TV.
Almost without exception, anime in the US is dubbed and the voice acting/voice over job is atrocious. Many a time, the dubbing is done so poorly that the voice over will be added, but the background music is removed. Also much of the time, you'll see only two animations for a mouth (open and closed) instead of many. Plus, often American music is added to various spots which much of the time is ill fitting (some awesome music is played in intro scenes, and it's mostly replaced). Finally, you get the pleasure of having the story edited by the American companies so that things like homosexuality, blood, good humor, partial nudity, etc are completely nixed only to be replaced by a paltry.
Next with American anime, you have to deal with what I refer to as "interminable shows." Japan has the same shows aired, but in America it seems the networks only think a show with infinity episodes can sell or be watched. They seem to have no concept that a story can end. However, some few exceptional animes do make it through which brings me to my next point:
American TV release schedules are f---ing terrible. Last I checked 1 to 4 episodes (Mon - Thur) are shown a week. Although they do practically the same thing in Japan, I (and others) absolutely cannot stand trying to wait approx 6 weeks at the shortest to see the entirety damaged American anime "product". Also the schedule is very likely to change and/or be at an awful hour at night. Finally if you do like an anime in the US, the DVDs are more expensive than crack.
This is why I "obtain" subtitled anime; the alternative is just too horrible to watch. And, for those of you listing the anime you like please consider which year it was released in the US because I'm relatively sure the award is meant to be given annually for the American releases that year. - saska, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"And I'm absolutely SHOCKED that Naruto didn't win anything."
Clearly an oversight. It's just as mindless and fluffy as everything else that won an award.
If I were to recognize the truly brilliant series available in the US that nobody was watching, I'd point to Noein and Zipang.
I don't like to talk about anime because it seems like when you know anything about it, you are immediately branded with the otaku stigma. I couldn't care less what's hot in Japan *or* here, but I do watch a lot of anime. And especially at NYCC, the best comedy is so obviously Genshiken. - BuddyDoQ, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@BasouKazuma and @emanji
You watch anime, yet your appreciation for anime is lacking. There is a place for all anime, and it is on my playlist, as it should be for yours.
Basou: You think Bleach and Naruto are "brainless" fun, well when compared to the statements made in Eva, sure. But the target audience is 6-12 in Japan, you're probably not 6-12 and have forgotten how to enjoy such shows with messages of friends, loyalty, and never giving up, even when pitted against every single sing shinigami in hell. You see mindless battle of the week, and I see shows with consistent kickassary, a good solid message, and characters that are endearing if not engaging. Put down the GitS and watch some Jungle wa itsumo notchi Hare Guu (just google "guu"), it'll be good for you!
Emanji: You find anime with deeper meanings and hidden context to be too challenging and thus boring. Try starting with something lighter and build your way into shows like Grave of the Fireflies. Give Mushishi a try, if you haven't already. Quality animation, enough action to keep you pumped, and lots of hidden social insight veiled by a feudal-era presentation of Japanese mythology. If you don't like feudal type shows, then watch Monster, featuring the good Dr. Tenma. Once you're able to enjoy anime without explosions every episode, you'll start to discover and realm of insight you never knew existed, and even start to notice those themes even in your battle of the week shows like Bleach.
Both of you need to watch Death Note.
In fact, everyone needs to watch Death Note. - sv650touring, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1this is another one of those digg posts where almost everyone gets burried
- chibigoku, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Im not supporting the fact that FF:AC won this award, but I think you need a better definition of what is anime.
As far as I am concerned, having it be CGI does not disqualify it from being anime. Appleseed is CGI, yet it is an anime, no? Almost all anime is done on computers, does that disqualify Ghost in the Shell, or Bleach, or Full Metal Alchemist or Mai Hime or Zoids (a great example in my opinion since it has lots of CGI and more traditional animation)? What about Whichblade the anime? Is that not anime because it is based off of a non japanese show? How bout Gungrave? Does that fail to pass your test because its based on a video game?
I think it is the spirit of the show, and a few other things that should decide. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I think anime fans still have the "my precious fandom is fragile! If I don't promote it like a religion, it'll fail and I'll never see it again!" mindset from the time when the only way to get anime was via import video cassettes.
Well, it's time they woke up. We're up to our armpits in the stuff. I think it's high time they started having something resembling discrimination about which ones are worthwhile. - saska, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I guess that makes me a hot lesbian blonde. Do you have a complaint?
- chibigoku, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@thestuffmiester
"Many a time, the dubbing is done so poorly that the voice over will be added, but the background music is removed. Also much of the time, you'll see only two animations for a mouth (open and closed) instead of many."
Yup, your right. The 2 frame mouths problem is all the dubbers fault. I mean seriously, why didn't the dubbing company add more frames of animation to the original and make the mouths move correctly for the English language!!! I am shocked and appalled that this barbaric practice of leaving the animation to the animators is still in use...... - Patogrande, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2How is Cowboy BeBop not even mentioned? At the very least, it deserved best title song.
- dirtyknobs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Yeah, considering that "Howl's Moving Castle" won an Oscar in 2005 you'd think that SOMEONE would have put him on the ballot. And lostinthewired: Miyazaki is very much alive, and will be directing his next film, due out in 08.
- Darksoul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0@BasouKazuma
Give me a break apparently your the only one that doesn't know ***** about anime your hole attitude sucks. All of those movies and shows you mentioned yeah they are good ill give you that but just because you don't like naruto and bleach and doesn't mean your correct let me guess I bet you never watched it past the first episode or even the first season. So shove your biased ***** up your ass.
What makes me laugh is the fact that BasouKazuma has +23 diggs and emanji has -5. Just remember everybody just because you don't like something don't sit there and act all high and mighty just because you think you have better tastes and id like to say anybody that thinks naruto was made for 6 to 12 year olds I suggest you go back and watch again. And to all you other morons that are putting down anime and calling us geeks yeah your right we fix your computers id rather be doing that then doing what your doing sitting in your ***** motorhome on your recliner with your fat gut sticking out of your yellow stained t-shirt with your beer in your hand watching football for the 30 thousandth time while hitting your wife and not paying your child support for the 3 other moron kids like you.
Just remember us geeks run your lives. You can all proceed to digg me down now for my correct point of view. - hablabla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Just becuase something is popular in Japan meas it has to be popular here. This goes both ways, BAYWATCH is the most popular TV show in history outside of the US. Currently the number one TV show internationally is CSI MIAMI.
- garyblock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Holy *****. Does this thread get an award for Most Buried Comments or what?
- Dragon88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Which shows have this and which shows don't? With films, I ALWAYS prefer subtitles to dubbing, but I thought some anime shows got a pretty good treatment when it came to dubbing - Cowboy Bebop, for example. Which ones went well with dubbing, and which didn't?
- purple, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Advent Children is CGI, not anime. The rest is fine. If you don't like it, make your own awards show.
- MMilitia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Haha, anime awards. Rewarding people for making anime is like rewarding people for ***** in your hat.
- adezero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1i think you mean one piece 298
- Kolar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away were really well done. I haven't seen any of Hayao Miyazaki's latest films or shorts but he definitely should have had some kind of recognition.
- mlvassallo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Hoooooleeeeey *****. When I saw the comments on this topic I thought something fishy was going on. Then I read the comments.... and they all really did suck...
- kotatsu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Why the bizarre focus on US dubb actors/actresses? Should they be awarding stuff like story, character design, animation, CG etc...?!
And Advent Children was dreadful. - pogfreak, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1lol anime is so gay and therefor so are the people who watch it.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Story? Character design? These things have no place in anime (at least, not the ones shown on television). The stories are all excuses for martial arts fight scenes, and the character design is done with a randomizer for gender, hair color, and useless accessories (goggles, fingerless gloves, arm bands) that serve no purpose.
- Mazgazine1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I know they are awards for stuff - anything out right now - that can be bought..
But FLCL is like 5 years old!! Geeze...
and I can't believe no one has mentioned ONE PIECE.....OMG..... It will be the longest running anime by the end of the year!! Woohoo!! still waiting for 295!!! I wanna see 3rd GEAR!!!! Stop stretching the plot damn it!
/!!!!!
//EXCELAMTIONTASTIC!!! - dirtyknobs, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2It's obviously the US Big Anime cartel the trying to silence the critics!
- bills534, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2People who actually watch anime fail at life
- qwertyfied, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Angry weeaboos are aaaaaaangry.
- dirtyknobs, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Actually, it was my FRIEND who got the tapes via Usenet. I just helped him put the labels on.
We also played Magic before anyone else and wrote computer programs on punch-cards. - rhkaloge, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1This sounds like one of us "old school" anime fans, the ones who watched third generation copies of Bubblegum Crisis while reading a translation from a Usenet post (enough geek refs to establish cred yet?) arguing with the teenagers in Naruto headbands at conventions. "Subs Suck!" "I don't wanna READ movies!" etc.
Besides, when has anyone been happy with ANY award show? - SaintStryfe, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Guys, "American Anime Awards" were an industry self-back-patting event. FF7:AC was a cash in, while Miyazaki is an artist.... don't be so shocked!
- tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Yes anytime I see anything anime related on adult swim I change the channel. I prefer my adult swim to be filled with hillbilly squids, a group of fast food morons living in New Jersey, Peter Griffen and Bender. A lot of people might hate those shows, but none of those shows takes itself the lest bit seriously.
- serend, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6never seen so many buried comments in my life!
- arof, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Any particular reason this has been red-thumb bombed? I had a couple good posts on this article!
- tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5I like a few anime movies, because they are good movies. For instance Princess Mononoke or however you spell it, is a good movie. But anime nerds, holy ***** christ anime nerds are the worst. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry but I can't stand you anime nerds, I'd rather spend a week locked in a room full of WoW nerds than two hours with one hardcore anime nerd. I used to know this guy in a high school, all he would ***** do is talk about anime, or whats coming out in Japan. Every week when the new anime dvds came out in the states he bought them (doesn't matter if they were actually good, everything was good to him), and brought them to school. He showed me them, he talked about them, he brought his anime magazine out that you actually had to read from right to left like the Japanese do, the dude was seriously obsessed like I've never seen someone. I mean all I did was mention that I have an interest and enjoyed some anime movies, and boy was that a mistake.
The guy was a decent dude, but his obsession was insane to me. The worst part is that he would pronounce the anime shows as if he were a Japanese guy speaking in English... that really ***** annoyed me. He also wanted to move to Japan to marry a Japanese princess of some sort... and he was really serious about that. Sorry, but 90 percent of the anime I've seen is horrible convoluted *****. It's the equivalent of a porno movie really, the parts where there is suppose to be a plot is there to make some sort of an excuse for a fight scene. Oh and if you tell them the movie is retarded and you didn't like it, that is the anime nerd. They will explain to you how you just don't get it, or you're to dumb to understand the plot. - Amusing, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Miyazaki wrote Princess Mononoke as well as many other great anime pieces.
It really all isn't crap, but a lot of the good stuff you don't see over here, and imo, american voice actors are crap and make it painful to listen to.
Yes, there are a lot of anime fanatics out there, and they give anime lovers a bad name. The guy you discribe sounds downright creepy and I could understand why you feel the way you do. -
