- spookyttws, on 02/06/2009, -0/+12FTA: "The Jeffrey Katzenberg-led company also has "Monsters vs. Aliens" in theaters in March, "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Shrek Goes Fourth" in 2010, and a "Kung Fu Panda" sequel scheduled for 2011."
Dreamworks is making a FOURTH Shrek movie? What the ***** is wrong with these people? I know it'll make a ***** of money, but it all just feels like Myer's other juggernaut, Austin Powers: Make one original and funny movie, then make as many sequels as you can literally telling the exact same jokes yet pretending to be self aware that you're telling the same joke. I know it's all about the money, but for once can't we just make one great movie and leave it at that? - whoreable, on 02/06/2009, -1/+11I want to impregnate Tina Fey.
- Ninh, on 02/05/2009, -1/+11Animation movies often have a much more impressive roster of stars than "straight" films. Voice work seems to be quite a bit cheaper than paying them to show their mug on screen.
- kkeut, on 02/06/2009, -2/+7the definition of 'amazing cast' sure has changed.
- BlaqReaper, on 02/06/2009, -0/+5Well, they plan to make 6...
- urbanarson, on 02/06/2009, -3/+8WTF? Can Dreamworks come up with an original idea? Superhero movie...Pixar already did it...any one else remember The Incredibles?
Bug's Life/Antz
Finding Nemo/Shark Tale
Monster's Inc./Monsters and Aliens
I can't wait until they make a Wall-E movie, how about when they copy Toy Story. This ***** is getting out of hand. - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 02/06/2009, -2/+7This is more DreamWorks "stunt casting" of actors by name instead of voice or appropriateness for the role?
No one ever comes to a movie to HEAR Brad Pitt...(cough) SINBAD (cough).
They do come to SEE him in LIVE action movies. But when it comes to ANIMATED characters, audiences don't give a damn if it's a famous voice or not.
The right voice for the right character is Pixar's model. - ripple123, on 02/06/2009, -1/+5once again, Pixar leads, Dreamworks follows.
- p2a1x7, on 02/06/2009, -1/+52010 seemed so far off until I thought about it.
- inactive, on 02/05/2009, -3/+7That is an impressive list of Stars.
- MasterGrief, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3Well yeah, they've gotta run this thing into the ground!
- quomen, on 02/06/2009, -1/+4I hope you're not being serious.
No, I hope you're not being REALLY SERIOUS.
NO, I REALLY HOPE that you're not being SERIOUS IN THE SLIGHTEST. - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -3/+6Let me guess..
Tina Fay will play a fresh, new, original role of a nerdy and self motivated yet cute and destinictly feminine character...
Just a guess... - p2a1x7, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3Showing their mug on screen requires hair/makeup/wardrobe and acting (voice/body). Voice acting requires none of that except the voice. Not saying that they aren't overpaid, just why voice acting is cheaper :)
- innocentsinner, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3Oh yay, another animated movie voiced by A-list stars. That worked so well for Robots.
So many talented voice actors out there and everyone is relying on movie stars to voice characters now. - cheeseron, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3didn't they make "small soldiers"?
e: yes, they did http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_Soldiers - innocentsinner, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3Pixar does it too, but it seems that they're better at choosing the actor to fit the role rather than writing the role around the actor. I mean, look at Toy Story, going for big-name actors Tom Hanks and (then-popular) Tim Allen. And it worked. For The Incredibles, they go with all-but-forgotten Craig T. Nelson. And it worked.
- emalen, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3I wish I could digg you up more than once. Non-famous voice over actors are all put out of work by this obsession with getting "star" talent. Remember when you saw a movie for it's story (like older Disney movies) and not the stars?
- DavidTurnbull, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Yeah, Oktapodi, it raked in millions in the box office opening weekend right?...oh wait
- whoreable, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Yeah it reminds me of how much of a loser I am, and that I still live with my parents while blaming it on the recession.
- ronfez, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2You also do not require the impressive roster to ever meet.
- innocentsinner, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Don't forget cramming the movies full of pop culture references that will be irrelevant within months.
- StupotAce, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Get in line like the the rest of us have.
- ClarkNoHeart, on 02/06/2009, -2/+4Except for Pixar. Because they're actually intelligent.
- Doctoxicated, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2wow this is going to be terrible. It'll be like mystery men with 1/6 the talent and none of Janeane Garofalo's hotness.
- whatthefu, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2Antz was a different type of movie than A Bug's Life, and Monsters and Aliens seems to be the same way. I'll give you Shark Tale though.
- leif77, on 02/07/2009, -1/+2The thing about Pixar doing that is that they get the right people for the roles instead of getting the people first... i even think Owen Wilson was right for Lightning McQueen... and look at Billy Crystal and John Goodman... they made Monsters Inc.... then again... Pixar does just about everything right....
- TheRealDj, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1Celebrity voices do NOT improve a CGI movie.
Exception for John Ratzenberger - jcroweall7, on 02/06/2009, -1/+2It'd be an "amazing cast" if this was a live-action movie. Dreamworks has a habit of hiring big-name actors to voice their movies, just for the sake of saying so-and-so was involved.
Remember Kung Fu Panda? Such an "amazing cast!" Yet, Seth Rogan and Jackie Chan probably had 3 lines each. Angelina Jolie had barely enough to know she had a character in the movie. - SaladCactusKing, on 02/06/2009, -1/+2Hey, maybe all of the money they're going to hire A-List actors for animated features could be used to save the Motion Picture Hospital and Nursing Home that Katzenberg and his cronies are shutting down because they "can't afford it."
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/the_big_picture/20 ...
Jesus. Talk about a brutal industry. Past your prime after being part of it for 50+ years? ***** you, we need to give another 10 million paycheck for a cartoon. - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1She was nerdy hot in that movie...in a very gothy Tina Fey sort of way. :)
- bffoley, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1They're making an Austin Powers 4, by the way
- DavidTurnbull, on 02/06/2009, -2/+3Because having different opinions is wrong.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1@lilrabbit: That's arguable but including big names in the voice casting sure helps.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1The BEST animated movies cast by VOICE. Mike Myers wasn't the most famous actor FACE to be Shrek...it was his "Scots/Canadian" voice that made the character.
- bjs3171, on 02/06/2009, -1/+2SWEET. I can't wait for another movie that's not as good as Pixar's.
- duniyadnd, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1I'll give you that, but they did a really good job with the cast for Kung Fu Panda (and they really only made a big deal of Jack Black as one of the voices, even though it had a stellar cast). Monsters and Aliens seem to be a good match as well, I can't name a single actor in that one (probably cause I haven't seen enough commercials).
I felt Madagascar and Shrek III were turning points for DreamWorks Animation for the worse, but they hung in there with Over the Hedge. - anshuman, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1This post made Simple jack's eyes rain :`=(
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1How many tired fart and scatalogical jokes will be in this one this time?
- leif77, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1Seth Rogen was much better in Horton anyway...
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1Janeane Garofalo is hot?
- ansatsu29, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1I want more Tina Fey!
- dataset, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1Seriously. The man plays two parts. Lovable awkward loser or loud inarticulate blowhard.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -1/+1why is it always about super heroes.... and fighting animals...
i would love to see a full on animated drama from the major animation studios. Remember Oktapodi? - quomen, on 02/06/2009, -2/+2Shrek was a great movie. So was Kung Fu Panda.
- quomen, on 02/06/2009, -2/+2Tina Fey is incredibly douchey. She dissed John Stewart sometime last year falsely accusing him of using laugh tracks on his show. Also, she used SNL as a platform for her political view and to selfishly promote Hillary Clinton.
- TardyHarbinger, on 02/06/2009, -0/+0Audiences do give a damn.
First of all, most good actors are going to be good voice actors as well. Brad Pitt is an interesting example. He is definitely a pretty boy and all the more famous for his looks, but I think he's a good actor too and would have something to offer in a voice role. I think he is his generation's Robert Redford.
Secondly, it is enjoyable for audiences to identify actors by voice who are well known but didn't receive pre-title billing.
Finally, your statement about Pixar forces me to conclude that John Ratzenberger is somehow the right voice for about EVERY character, or at least one character per movie, which seems unlikely. - dman24752, on 02/06/2009, -1/+1Thank you, I did not know that it was interesting until you pointed it out.
- YourNameHere1, on 02/06/2009, -0/+0You obviously have never seen the movies "Permanent Midnight" and "Zero Effect".
- innocentsinner, on 02/06/2009, -1/+1and Fey.
