- tomcat4u, on 02/08/2010, -6/+48Put me first in line with the haters. I saw what Burton did to Willy Wonka...
It's called Alice in Wonderland god damnit, totally misleading - sporttouring, on 02/08/2010, -9/+46God, I'm going to get buried for this...but the movie just doesn't look that good.
- maddHavoc, on 02/08/2010, -11/+43I really hope Tim Burton will stop ruining classics.
- omgwtflawl, on 02/08/2010, -5/+26Am I the only one who just doesn't like Tim Burton that much?
- HAL90000, on 02/08/2010, -4/+22Hater.
- Cerebron, on 02/09/2010, -1/+12How can you poop on something that has already been pooped on?
- whatthefu, on 02/08/2010, -4/+14How can you ruin something that's been adapted countless times in various forms of media?
- Mr_Lyle, on 02/08/2010, -2/+11They should have based this movie on American McGee's version of Alice.
Edit: Seems like they're already making one of those. IMDB says 2010. 2 Alice movies in the same year is a bit of an overkill. - bencanfield, on 02/08/2010, -0/+9CG *****!
- TwwIX, on 02/08/2010, -3/+11I would have preferred a film version of American McGee's Alice instead.
- internetisscary, on 02/08/2010, -0/+7im nervous about this one
- mywhitenoise, on 02/08/2010, -1/+8If you have hate in your heart, let it out.
By the way, I'm ready to hate. - Cerebron, on 02/09/2010, -2/+9Sorry, but you are wrong. I'm a huge Lewis Carroll fan, and Disney's animated Alice was closer in spirit to the book than you think, especially with Disney's Dali influence.
Burton is writing a new story from 'whole cloth' so there is no reason to believe it will be anywhere near the book. - Concretec, on 02/08/2010, -4/+10Well, thanks for bastardizing another little piece of my childhood.
- frankenfag, on 02/09/2010, -1/+7Never mind Alice In Wonderland, I already hate her for ripping off Kimba when she "wrote" The Lion King. http://www.kimbawlion.com/rant2.htm
- pikpikcarrotmon, on 02/08/2010, -2/+8He disappoints me. He's far better at applying a gothic feel to a movie which is not dark than actually making a dark, creepy movie. Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish are leaps and bounds above the rest of his work. Sweeney Todd, his darkest and most violent movie, is also his worst.
He and Martin Scorsese need to branch out a little and cast different actors once in a while... - huhu007, on 02/08/2010, -5/+10Haters??? Teen wrote this?
- spacem00se, on 02/08/2010, -2/+7And he got permission from the estate of Roald Dahl to film it, this after doing a decent job at doing the James & The Giant Peach.
Plus, theres a long list of horrible directors that could make this movie all fluff and no substance. - twistedwriter, on 02/08/2010, -1/+6I would have preferred a film version of American McGee's Strawberry Shortcake.
- Cerebron, on 02/09/2010, -3/+8While Burton's Willy Wonka *movie* followed the book a little closer than the previous movie did, Depp's Wonka character was a horrible departure from Wilder's wonderful Wonka.
- grnicon, on 02/08/2010, -2/+6And yet Burton's version still gobbled Godzilla-sized balls.
At best you could say, "Well it's not as bad as Planet of the Apes." - jarjarwang, on 02/08/2010, -2/+6I love some of what she did with the material, but the rapping jabberwocky is in EVERY SCENE.
- emkaysmith, on 02/09/2010, -1/+5Yeah, don't bother to go and *see* the thing before you pan it.
And the Disney version sucks pond scum. Try reading the actual book. - spacem00se, on 02/08/2010, -1/+4Whats a better term for people who are hired by industry insiders to crap on a competing movie, months before anyone can screen it?
- FishThePirate, on 02/09/2010, -1/+4"I wanted to honor the work..."
Then stop raping it and leave it be. - twistedwriter, on 02/08/2010, -1/+4What are you talking about? The Disney Alice was some scary ***** up bad trip.
- LostFaction, on 02/08/2010, -0/+3Just watched "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" last night and I'd recommend it to anyone with the patience to let their imagination go.
- zoomaKabu, on 02/09/2010, -3/+5Why can't he (or his writers) write something new, create new characters instead of screwing with ones that are already in the public conscious. Because it's a cheap trick to get you to attach your positive associations with the classical story to his monstrosity.
- ptoomey, on 02/08/2010, -2/+4I'm glad it's basically a sequel. We have too many versions and re-tellings of the classic as it is. This should be interesting to see. Whether it's Tim Burton trippy good or Tim Burton trippy awful we'll find out next month.
- LCR67, on 02/08/2010, -6/+8no haters here! no one on digg has anything but nice things to say...
- smackydoodle, on 02/09/2010, -5/+7I don't get why there are haters. If you don't want to see the movie, then shut the ***** up and do something else with your time. I mean look at all of the comments above me, bunch of pussies sitting around crying even tho most of you will watch it.
- tgc1, on 02/09/2010, -1/+3I want to see it.
- spacem00se, on 02/09/2010, -1/+3No, critics typically crap on a movie AFTER THEY HAVE SEEN IT. Normally the review is posted a week or two before the movie comes out.
Since its so stupid to trash on a movie without seeing it, months before even the actual critics get the DVD screener, one can only assume that they are being paid to slam it. - emkaysmith, on 02/09/2010, -1/+3Burton? Are you kidding? *Disney* has ruined every traditional fairy tale and classic novel he ever touched. Burton just does a whole new riff on the classics. That's allowed.
I hadn't heard about this new one until the Super Bowl commercial, but it looks pretty interesting. - Zanrook, on 02/09/2010, -0/+1First off, I'm not going to go see it and second, you're a terrible person, the disney version is god tier.
- Cerebron, on 02/09/2010, -3/+4"LW: The characters are from the books, but -- except for when she falls down the rabbit hole -- there is no section that is like the books in any way, in terms of the story that I created. So the only part is the "getting there" part. "
I have no idea why, given the ability to create a visually stunning cinematic masterpiece based on a literary classic, you'd run off and make a move based on a fanfic instead.
The producers know 'Burton's Alice Fanfic' won't sell the same tickets as 'Alice in Wonderland IN 3D!!!" so they decided to delude the public with a misnomer.
Now, I know the author here probably loved the original work, and worked hard creating a (probably) very good Alice spin-off product, but honesty in the title should be required.
"[This isn't the original story, but it is called by the now-familiar name "Alice in Wonderland" -- do you expect a portion of your audience to be displeased with the disconnect?]
"LW: I'm sure they will be. It's audacious, what we've done. I don't know know where I got off. What was I thinking? [Laughs] I'm not joking, I was thinking when I was writing this, "Who do you think you are?" Seriously!"
The main reason people are displeased with the disconnect is because it appears the producers weren't satisfied with the original story,(like the way Peter Jackson ***** up the LotR movies,) and instead hired some unknown to 'fix' the classic.
That said, go ahead and write some fanfiction, I'm sure some quality writers can churn out great stuff in the same vein as Carroll, Tolkien or Dahl, but don't expect everyone to be happy when you pretend it's the same thing.
I know not every great story translates well to the screen, nothing can quite capture the spirit of the 'Great Gatsby', and you don't want your creative genius stymied in its prime, but at some point, realize that great works are great for a reason and I'm not gonna be happy when you sell a picture of a horse you painted and titled a reproduction of the 'Mona Lisa'm instead of a *parody* of said painting. - CrimsonFlash, on 02/09/2010, -6/+7All I know is that Johnny Depp looks like a douche.
- BurntToShreds, on 02/09/2010, -1/+2Yes please
- Elranzer, on 02/09/2010, -0/+1Well, before it was released, Diggers all hated Avatar and said it would fail. They're always right...
- LostFaction, on 02/08/2010, -0/+1the original gave me nightmares as it was
- smashingmonkey, on 02/08/2010, -2/+3Tim Burton is brilliant in creating spectacle and sometimes even build-up, but his movies almost always fall apart somewhere along the line. The two exceptions I can think of are Big Fish, which I quite liked, and Planet of the Apes, which was never together enough to fall apart.
- ramboky, on 02/09/2010, -1/+2It was Burton's take on the book, not a remake of the movie. Read the book and you'll find Burton's efforts much truer to the tone and style of Roald Dahl.
Regarding Alice, how about you actually see it before joining the "haters"? It may well be terrible but it could also be brilliant. At least if you wait you could form an objective opinion rather than just spouting uninformed rubbish. - emkaysmith, on 02/10/2010, -0/+1First off, denouncing on the basis of ignorance a film you refuse to see convinces me you're an idiot, and second, if I'm a "terrible person" for criticizing Disney films, I'm in excellent company. From Pauline Kael (whom you've probably never heard of) to Roger Ebert, critics have been taking Disney to task for his treatment of classic fairy tales for *DECADES*.
- MaliciousKitty, on 02/09/2010, -0/+1"messed up drug trip" is what I'm fearing!
I want it to be what it is - a story that was made up for Alice Liddel and her sisters while they were all out boating. Not a twisted, darker, drugged up version of the story.
I'm sure the movie will be interesting I just wish they chose a different name since it is not the same story. - twarner, on 02/09/2010, -0/+1Make that 3 if you count the miniseries Alice that came out this year
- EddiePotato, on 02/09/2010, -0/+1Jar Jar's brother?
- FishThePirate, on 02/09/2010, -0/+1Alice in Wonderland doesn't have anything to do with drugs. Go read a book.
- Elranzer, on 02/09/2010, -1/+1So basically, the same writer who ripped off Kimba the White Lion (The Lion King) is ripping off American McGee's Alice with this movie.
- FishThePirate, on 02/09/2010, -1/+1Speak for yourself, I'm not giving Tim Burton any of my money.
