- euphemizeme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Holy *****, almost every single post above "thanked David." What a coincidence.

Hey, All of my MySpace friends,
I posted my article to digg.com. Please sign up and "digg" my story. Maybe I can make it to the front page. Ha Ha!
Sincerely,
David "David" David - pmuse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Thanks DAVID, for pointing out how flawed the digg system is!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Thank you Dav...
wait, not till I get paid like the rest of them. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5http://www.digg.com/movies/Youtube_and_8_website_sells_indie_film_to_MGM
Actually, it was pointed out 71 days ago, yet here we are again with another diggrigged submission. - actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ Fandori
“Every time articles by David Hewlett are posted on here, they're slated by the digg 'community'. Why?”
Because he directs his minions to join Digg and vote his stories to front-page status, instead of letting them rise or fall on their own merits. This is called gaming Digg and it’s a close cousin to spamming. Digg users who don’t have their heads up the submitter’s ass don’t like it very much.
“He's got as much right as anyone else to post on here…”
Yes, and we have as much as anyone to call ***** on how his posts are reaching the front page.
“…and if you gave other posters the same amount of abuse, you wouldn't have a site.”
*****. Other people caught gaming Digg get the same treatment. The only reason you don’t see it is because it’s generally caught before a bunch of David Hewlitt fluffers can move it up from the Newly Submitted stories section.
“…a lot of these people have been here for a while (me, for example), and we would never have heard of your backwards little 'community' if it weren't for some of these articles.”
If 2 ½ months constitutes a while, then yes, you have been here a while. You signed up on Jan 21 of this year to Digg and comment on a David Hewlitt story -- and have since only returned to do the same. Don’t pretend that you’re a regular to our “backwards little 'community'”, because you’re not. If you only want to comment on David Hewlitt stories, there is already a place to do that. It’s called adogsbreakfastmovie.com, it’s owned by David Hewlitt, and there is a comments section under every article where you can coo and handjob Mr. Hewlitt to your heart’s delight.
“How do you ever hope to be taken seriously when you insult and belittle any new members?”
Do you think a lot of Digg users lose sleep over being taken seriously? You really don’t visit Digg often.
“He's passing on advice based on his own mistakes and successes in order to help other people not repeat where he went wrong.”
I do not doubt that Mr. Hewlitt spent years in an endless, artistic struggle before hitting upon the idea of bringing a headshot to his auditions. Please thank him for this experienced advice the next time you come up for air.
@ sueKay
“I wonder if any of them actually read the article. It's a great article, one that echos and expands on advice I've recieved from directors and actors in the past.”
I read the article. It’s the same kind of elementary crap that can be found anywhere. And if he’s just now explaining the concept of headshots, the audience he’s talking to hasn’t even reached the “Demo Reel” stage. You can’t have a reel without footage, you can’t get footage without landing jobs, and you land jobs without a headshot. Hewlitt is a hack, the article is pap, and his followers are swooning idiots participating in a poorly executed viral marketing campaign that is easily seen for what it is, i.e., self-aggrandizing *****. - SamusMcAslan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nice to hear some advice on starting out. I especially liked the part about not putting montages in demo reels and the warning that your headshot actually looks like you, just because those are mistakes very easily made by people who don't know any better and/or don't have the most updated info (or those with less than stellar agents who don't tell them these things). Sure, it's basic, but the whole point is to give advice to people wondering how to get into acting. (And yes, demo reels require being in things, unless one films one's own demo reel just to have something to show...as I'm working on doing.)
Oh, wait, that was a positive review. Please, un-digg away. Clearly I'm a sycophant. And keep those blowjob jokes coming. They're oh-so-mature. - JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Wow, and what a terrible article, too. Thanks for nothing, 'david'
- redphoniex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i'm not going to bother arguing with you 'been here for years' people. You give everyone here a bad name. Good actile. Very practical.
- sueKay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hear hear!
I wonder if any of them actually read the article. It's a great article, one that echos and expands on advice I've recieved from directors and actors in the past. - arcangelgabriel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I noticed that blowing the producer is absent from the list.
/I'm just sayin - eexlebots, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What the crap
- fangdori, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What on Earth is going on with this site? How come all of the positive comments are dead and buried, whereas the whining masses are 'dugg' loads? If you lot weren't so far up your own arses that you couldn't see what was right in front of you, it would be clear that you're the ones being narcissistic and disgraceful. I mean, seriously, grow up people! Every time articles by David Hewlett are posted on here, they're slated by the digg 'community'. Why? He's got as much right as anyone else to post on here, and if you gave other posters the same amount of abuse, you wouldn't have a site. I believe that in other articles we've firmly established that the people who digg these articles aren't paid, nor are they personal friends of the author. Alright, so it may prompt a few more people to sign up for digg, but a lot of these people have been here for a while (me, for example), and we would never have heard of your backwards little 'community' if it weren't for some of these articles. How do you ever hope to be taken seriously when you insult and belittle any new members? Surely everyone else was a newbie at some point (that's rather obvious), and you must have got here somehow. Stop being so bloody arrogant and close minded. Wake up and grow up.
- fangdori, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, it is a very good article. It's helpful advice from someone who has been there and done that. He's passing on advice based on his own mistakes and successes in order to help other people not repeat where he went wrong. It's sound advice, and shows that he wants to pass on some of what he's learned based on a long career and a lot of experience.
- Haliyah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh. That was entertaining.
Almost as entertaining as reading all the whining.
I find it extremely amusing that these 'old-timers' seem to think that Mr. Hewlett's goal is to get on the front page, and that the front page is so damn important and elite that he'd pay off all of his fans, co-stars, sisters, and dog to do it. - alison974, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1He isn't even advertising anything. he spent a lot of time writing an article to help out people who were interested. i read the whole article and found it very interesting. there was only one mention of his movie at the very bottom, hardly spamming as you say.
i don't think people here are very fair at all. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I AM SPARTACUS-- I MEAN, DAVID
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@ Cavenger
Yup. Same submitter, too. - Haliyah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll bet all the nonexistant money that everyone's not getting paid that if Mr. Hewlett had logged on to a generic account, you uptight bastards would have dugg this, not buried it.
Try a little objectivity next time. - K9DB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Stupid internet crashed before my edit was accepted...as I was saying...yes, it's that last line that's got you all bothered huh? That's just it, it's part of the answer/article! LOL!
I plan to learn all I can! ;) - actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"David",
Dugg based on the title. Undugg, buried and blocked based on gaming Digg.
Seriously man, don't send your hordes to push this ***** to the top. You've done it more than once and it's pretty ***** narcistic and disgraceful. The point of digg is for users to find interesting stories they might otherwise miss -- not for a fanbase to circle jerk over something they've already read.
By the way, you forgot a very important thing in "Exactly What You Need to be an Actor" -- namely, talent. Then again, you *are* a regular on Stargate: Artlantis, so I guess that doesn't apply in your case. Are they still shooting those? - K9DB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hey, hey, be nice!
David was just helping us out, we asked and he was nice enough to answer.
That article was great, I learnt a lot of stuff I'd never even thought of before...hehe, so true, the few times I've seen myself of camera (or even in a photo) I had to wonder "Who the heck is that?! Is that ME?!" LOL! He's right, when you think about it, you know yourself the least when it comes to stuff like that. LOL! "Hobbit Head shot"...you have to admit that his articles are entertaining too! Come on, tell me you didn't at least chuckle a little!
He's given a lot of himself to his "friends" and we love him for it!
While it is true...he does have a LOT of friends..but you can't blame him for that! Wait...yes you can!...Dang you David for being yourself and being so nice to us all the time!! :P
I'm sorry for the unhappy diggers out there, but he simply DOES have a lot of friends (unpaid and not held at gunpoint). He takes a lot of time for us and we simply try our best to be there for him in turn and thank him for it.
And yes...I know what you're going to say...I didn't say he wasn't a smart guy ;) - beadtific, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hey David!
It's so much fun to watch you work. Sometimes I watch a movie or a show of a favorite actor's once for the story and then once or twice or as many times necessary for the really good "Oh wow, that is some amazing stuff," moments of acting. I don't mean Acting, acting, lord no, you don't do that, but the bits where you can see the emotional or thought processes happen and it puts the hair up on the back of your neck.
You do this, are so natural and inhabit that character so very well, but still in a breathtaking, don't miss a second expression. Ew, sounds a little fawning, but no, there are a couple of people I watch that I call my "Master Class Teachers," and you are one. Funnily enough, I was once all fraught to watch Meryl Streep on "Inside the Actor's Studio," to find out about technique, only to discover she has no idea how she does what she does. God bless her, but I wanted to strangle her!
Then, I realized the actors I admire most are the ones whose thought processes are visible, clear without the backup of dialogue. Tom Hanks does that. Helen Hunt and Helen Mirren, Felicity Huffman and Phillip Seymour Huffman and Patrick Stewart and Sissy Spacek and lots of others and you. *You* I have on DVD and many many more opportunities to watch you just knock the smallest bit out of the park over and over. You're so good. You've wound up the kind of artist actors just hope they'll be able to get out of their own way enough to BE, and the guy you hope like hell is going to be playing across from you, 'cause everything will be that much better and oh, it's so much fun to be cast against someone really really good and because, hell yes, now you can just jam and play.
You make it look very easy. I know not all of it is. - anyonka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thanks that helped me a lot
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2No mention of "Get a good set of knee pads, and get rid of your gag reflexes"?
That's how Tom Cruise got started!
EDIT: arcangelgabriel beat me to it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2holy crap it's rodney mckay!
(sorry, but somebody had to point out the obvious) - Becky65, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4Very nice article David, thank you. It is some very good advice from someone who actually knows. I heard some of it before when I took a drama class in high school (oh so many, many years ago) She phrased it more as "Know what roles you are not suited for" but it was the same advise.
- RRamkissoon, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3An interesting read. While not everyone may agree with all of David's tips - these are definitely a great place to start if you are thinking of getting into the biz. Keep the articles coming! I'll keep reading them.
- ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4Awesome article David.
I have no clue who you are, I just felt like I was supposed to call you by your first name for some reason.
But seriously, pretty good article. David. - Coded, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4Great article David! See you on the next season of Atlantis ;)
- dpainter, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4Thanks, David! You're the greatest!
- alison974, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3that was a great article... if i wanted to become an actor it would be very useful, but an interesting read none-the-less... you never know, if my life takes a different direction i might remember this article and put it to good use :)
keep 'em coming. - icclenomi, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3Great, thanks David this will be very helpful to me!! I'm already preparing for my 2nd audition proccess and this will help me decide what to go for, thanks!!!
trusted squirrel nomidalantian - nanook660, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2Great article David. Thank you. Although acting is not my thing nor my dream I appreciate the inside scoop from an actor. An awesome actor at that. I digg this article and I hope to see more from you. Truth be known I have a shyness thing happening with me and when I was younger people thought I should be put into acting to cure it but I never showed any interest and I sort of do have the shyness thing under control now. But it does have a sneaky way of creeping out on me.
Peace
Fran - astrosheep, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3I always wanted to be an actor. Then I realized, hey, I was too shy to stray far from the b-rated junior high musicals. It took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that what I actually wanted was to be famous so I could MEET actors. I'm not sure I've gotten over the desire, but I certainly have no acting talent, anyways. I'm a writer instead. Reading your article has re-affirmed all the hard work and self-esteem and tough skin that's gotta go into the business, and I just don't think I'd ever make the grade! Thanks, David. :-)
- icarusancalion, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3This is very practical advice, especially the part about seeing who you are first before you audition for inappropriate roles. This can save actors and actresses a lot of wasted time and frustration, and help them understand what's going on behind the scenes. We don't see ourselves. I wonder how many actors, including those currently working, could benefit from his advice.
- marvdan76, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3Thanks David. Posted a longer comment on Myspace, so I'll avoid writing the same thing twice. Just wanted to offer a 'digg', assuming I don't mess this up. I may have most of the qualities of a geek, but I don't have any technical know-how at all. Thanks again for a great post!
- divarachel87, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3David, that was great! I didn't realize until now that I'll probably need some of these things! After all, opera singers are actors too, lol! Just actors with no spoken dialogue, lol! Hope to see great things in Atlantis next season!
- MajinLuke, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3Wow, what timing. I had just looked of into the sky and though "I wonder what i could do to be an actor..." and then David posts this. Thankyou very much, interesting stuff. I look forward to future atricles
Thanks
