- Dominatus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18@flernk: I will digg you down.
No where in the comics did they refer to Spider-Man in the black costume as Venom. The expression is "We are Venom", that is, the alien costume+eddie brock becomes venom, the alien costume's name is NOT Venom.
When Carnage got a piece of the suit, he did not become Venom. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16yes, as if it wasn't obvious that the man made of sand would be Sandman
- logicalnoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14for the thousandth time venom is in it, he's seen in at least one version of the trailer and has been confirmed over and over to be involved in the final battle(note mary jane stuck in BLACK WEBBING).

During Intergalactic Superhero wars, Spider-Man's original costume was destroyed so he "borrowed" what he thought was a high tech suit. It had some amazing abilities which complemented his own: Amazing camouflage (costumes ability to look like anything he thought of), regeneration, enhanced strength, "organic" webbing (no cartridges/web fluid required), gas filtering and other neat tricks. Peter was still Peter in the original comic book, there were no personality changes (the movie obviously changed that to get more viewers), but there were changes in other things: Sleeping habits (he would sleep through entire days), he would be "sleep-crawling" in the night without knowing it and he was constantly tired for reasons he didn't know. Occasionally the costume would be reluctant to remove itself from Peter. Realizing his Peter Parker life was spiraling out of control, he took the costume to Mr. Fantastic who determined it was a Symbiote and upon that discovery the organism tried to permanently graft itself to Peter Parker, but was forced away from him by Mr. Fantastic's sonic gun and imprisoned. So now we have an organism who frankly didn't understand the situation, felt betrayed when it thought (perhaps rightfully) it was working in a positive manner with Peter despite the physical exhaustion it created in its host) and had been separated from the only person it had known and imprisoned in solitary confinement. When it got out and found Brock, we had to people who both hated Spider man (peter Parker) so they had a common cause and the merger became venom with a warped since of morality: only hurt guilty, leave the innocent alone.Peter was "guilty" of abandoning its partner and wrongfully imprisoning the the costume and of causing Brock to lose his liberty (or so they felt). Hope that clarifies everything both with when identity was establish as well as where the movie strays from the original story. Oh, Carnage is Venom's (well alien organism's) offspring. FYI

- thatlifestyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the way i understand it is the alien symbiote bonds with human organisms in order to survive. it happend to bond with peter. but peter soon realised after being initially impressed with the positive effects (regenerative capability and clothing mimicking) it also had negative effects and thats when he gets rid of it. then the symbiote finds brock, and becomes venom as brock lets it fully take over.
- SkyWalk423, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Someone give this guy a copy of "The Internet For Dummies"...
- H3BR3W, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@TheDiggMan
Peter Parker notably exhibits more control over the symbiote while joined with it (not complete, just more) than Brock, so I'd have to disagree. The symbiote takes almost total control of Brock, and I seem to remember a line out of the comic going something like, "No, not Brock. We are Venom" or something like that. So again, I wouldn't go so far as to say Parker was 'Venom' while joined with the alien, as it's a name it gave itself once joined with Eddie Brock. - kypen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm more hoping for Apocalyptica's cello interpretation of "Enter Sandman" incorporated with a full orchestra like what they did with the theme from "Requiem for a Dream" for the "Lord of the Rings" commercials.
- echoforever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually it's the animated Spider-Man TV series that has shown personality changes in Peter because of the costume.
- smartsingh24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Check the damn link before you post duggmirror. it didn't catch the site
- flernk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Alright, I'll jump in once more... guh I hate myself...
The name "Venom" is used occasionally as a reference to the symbiote creature itself, who is a criminally insane outcast from another world (his "real" name is probably some unpronounceable alien word). So, yes, technically when he joined with Peter Parker, together they were still "Spiderman," but more of a "Venom"-Spiderman hybrid. Then, Eddie Brock worked together with the "Venom" creature and together they referred to themself as a single name.
My point is only that, yes, Venom is in fact in the movie, whether you're referencing the symbiotic creature itself or the combined symbiote-host creature that Eddie Brock eventually becomes. So we can all agree that @franksands is wrong.
No offense meant @franksands, that's just the way it is. - thatlifestyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2on the comingsoon.com website, posted below, in one of the pics, it looks as though the alien symbiote is taking over eddie brock. if you look closely at the teeth, they are venom pointed teeth. so this definitely is not peter.
so there is venom, definintely in this film. gunna be an awesome film. hopefully they'll do more than 1 hour and 30mins. With venom, sandman and goblin, i really dont want to see this film rushed through. - evolver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry, I'm doing several things at my home office so my time was(is) limited, but I wanted to get what I remembered out on the board because a small debate seemed to be emerging. (You probably noticed other typos as well) Thanks for the super editing. ;-)
- Badfysh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As far as I know, when the symbiote is joined with Peter Parker it doesn't have a name. When it joins with Eddie Brock, *we find out* that it's called Venom, so I say it's fine to call it Venom at any time. Who's to say that if it had taken Parker over completely, it would have had a different name?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venom_(comics)
Venom is a moniker of several characters in the Marvel Comics' fictional Marvel Universe. It was first used by the character Eddie Brock in The Amazing Spider-Man #299 (April 1988). It is now used by Mac Gargan. Although "Venom" is usually the result of symbiosis between an extraterrestrial symbiote and a human host, the names "Venom" and "Venom symbiote" have also been used to in reference to the alien symbiote alone. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's hoping for another cameo by Stan Lee and that lady plucking her violin to the tune of the old Spider-Man theme song.

- bbaselice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dang. the site is down. has anyone seen any pics of venom and can point me to where I can check him out? I have only seen the toy. looks pretty cool and I am dying to see the real thing.
- theshelf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Okay, okay, let me explain this for you guys. The symbiote had no name as far as we know until after it bonded with Eddie. If I recall the quote somewhat correctly from the cartoon (unfortunately, I don't have the old comics yet), he said something like, "We are like poison to you now, and so we will call ourselves Venom." Something to that effect. However, we later find out that the symbiote is pretty much completely in control of Eddie, but Eddie doesn't really notice this because they both have the same goal -- revenge on Peter. Later, when the symbiote leaves Eddie, it keeps the name Venom, and so I would argue that Venom is just the symbiote. For example, in the current comics, Venom has bonded with Scorpion, but he is still called Venom (though readers prefer to call him Scorpenom).
- flernk, on 10/12/2007, -18/+17Technically, even when Peter Parker is joined with the symbiotic entity, he becomes "Venom" since it is the creature who is primarily responsible for the character, not the host. That he becomes a vengeful super villain after inhabiting Eddie Brock is really just a side note.
