- mexter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The reason it didn't do well was a lack of mainstream promotion combined with a rather small number of screens in the US. I'll buy it when it comes out on DVD, but I would have watched it in the theatre if I could have.
- ME - - duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I say scrap the second move and start production on SEASON 2!
- seanharrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I had never heard of Serentiy nor Firefly (I'll blame that on the marketing departments for their respective distributors). A couple of my buddies talked me into going. I came out of the theatre with the same feeling I had when I first saw Star Wars and the original Matrix movie. It was just a damn good sci-fi movie. I still haven't seen any episodes of Firefly, but that should change around Christmas time.
- skwaer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4For all you Serenity/Firefly fans seeking something else to tide you over until SciFi makes Serenity 2... Check out Cowboy Bebop. Firefly is pretty much a copy of Bebop. Bebop is probably one of the best shows of all time. Nuff said.
- MicahC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I haven't seen Serenity. I discovered Firefly after the movie came out and became a fan instantly. Personally, I hope this is true because it could lead to the return of the show. Battlestar Galactica was a mini-series and due to it's success, became a regular show.
Anyway, they're probably waiting to see the numbers from the Serenity DVD sales. - scorpioX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The movie was pretty good, it fills in some of the holes from the series. There were 2 things that sucked for people who've seen the series - I won't spoil it though.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hollywood OWES us this atleast as for that craptastic AVP.
- Guano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They HAVE to make a sequel.
Two by two, hands of blue... - aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Screw another movie, I want the TV show back!
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This would be cool if it's reality not a rumor. Serenity is actually the best film I've seen in the past few years. It was immersive, and it really took me "there".
- akkad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think this rumor might have something to it.
Universal wants to make money. They just about broke even with Serenity, so they know there is some type of market out there for it.
They also know that Joss "buffy" Whedon is a creative genius with a huge cult following.
So if they make TV movies, show them on Sci-fi (which they own), and then sell the DVD (which have a very nice profit margin), then they should be able to make a fairly decent, predictable profit.
This all comes with the added bonus of keeping Joss "buffy" Whedon happy, so he will develop new and interesting projects for the NBC*Universal media mega-corp.
Sounds to me like everyone wins - HiddenForce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Boo! Ads before viewing the page."
@vniow: Hint for IGN sites: Append a "?fromint=1" to whatever the URL is (unless it's already there) and it will (hopefully) bypass the stupid interrupting ads.
*SPOILERS* within this paragraph (for those few who have not seen the movie)! As for sequels, I sure hope there's a sequel or a revival of the series (my preference, actually) so we can find out what happens without Wash and Shepherd Book (both of whom I will miss a lot). - hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they can justify a Deuce Bigalow II: European Gigalo, they can justify a Serenity II. Incidentally, Serenity is less than $2m from break even, and DVD sales should easily hash that out. A studio will make a sequel to a film that bombed if they deemed factors like inappropriate release or inadequate marketing led to a poor showing. Other than fans of Firefly, I don't think anyone even had a clue about Serenity. Anecdotally, I know alot of people were "interested", but with tight entertainment budgets during post-Katrina-gas-hikes, and a year of ***** hollywood offerings, few people were feeling adventerous enough to give a movie a try when it was that... wierd.
- endernet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1See I don't get it. From Universal's prospective Firefly, the Fox TV show, did well enough in DVD sales that they felt a $40mil movie would do well in a world wide release. But then they are going to turn around and make a sequel that will only show on Sci-Fi channel for the nerds and geeks. I don't see why they cant take it up a notch and air it on NBC as a Movie of the Week or even a mini series. Hell, bring it out as part of the 06 Fall line up in Prime Time. The appeal of Firefly/Serenity is that its not for the ultra geek to enjoy, everyone can enjoy it. I've heard a lot of feedback from people that when they borrowed my DVDs their wives/girlfriends got really into the show too, when they normally don't like Star Wars/Star Trek/Star Gate/Battlestar and the like.
- glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It all comes down to advertising, unfortunetly I feel Joss Whedon lacks proper appreciation for the advertisement process. He does not realize how much of an influence it is, that and the trailer just sucked, they should have made many revisions of the trailer at least then they would have had a chance airing a trailer that looked as good as the movie or series.
- JalenJade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ilyag said "I STILL haven't seen this movie, nor do I particularly care. The trailers made it look like crap, and all the rabid psychopaths ("fans") really put me off wanting to watch it."
The only reason the Browncoats would seem to be "rabid psychopaths" is because they know how good the show was and the movie was going to be. We knew we needed mainstream viewers in order to guarentee 2 sequals and so it was taken upon ourselves to take on a "gurilla marketing" tactic and try to spread the word as wide as possible to anyone who would listen.
richman said "I personally hated Serenity. . "
Why?
Granted you're more into the movie by having seen the series, but the movie is a complete stand-alone. Read the novel if you don't want to see the movie. (Some things changed between when the novel was written a few months before the movie was released and based off an early shooting script..) But you get more of the backstory and understand the characters more by reading it. - NitrousFlare, on 02/05/2009, -0/+12005? For real?
- AnusBreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1***** YES.
but river cant pilot serentity and whoop reavers at the same time. - smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pissed away? Oh, I guess they should make another teenish movie. Right.
- bolteddown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really enjoyed Serenity and look forward to a sequel.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Make it and we will come! The FF converts are growing number, there is STILL buzz coming off the Serenity movie. I predict huge DVD sales.
One more thing, Sci-Fi Channel doesn't own the rights to the series so they can't make more TV episodes.
FOX owns the episode rights and they apparently don't want to sell them. The reason that Sci-Fi showed the FF episodes on their channel was because they purchased a license to show existing episodes and that's it.
The movie got made because Joss / Universal hold the movie rights, so they did what they could by making a movie.
I'd like to see another movie, I'd also like to see FOX get up off it's fat ass and either do something with the FF series or sell the rights to someone who WILL. - ModestJesse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Serenity was a great movie, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was one of the best sci-fi movies in recent history, right next to The Fifth Element.
- CPedison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am going to be sure to buy the DVD. If enough people purchase the DVD, there should be financially reasonable to make a sequel
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I very much want this to be true, but I seriously doubt it. This is, more than likely, just very wishful thinking on the part of some fans. Serenity didn't make money. In the movie biz money talks and BS walks. Guess which one Serenity turned out to be?
- babyphatman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1meh... made for TV... just bring back the big damn show....
- eelenneirda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i love love love the series and i adore the movie! i really hope that there is going to be a part Dex i will be one of the first in line. by the way Joss Weedon rocks!! oh just want to put this out there i want a Buffy movie!
- glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Best way to explain it is, when you first try and watch anime, at least in my case at first I hated it then I started to get use to it, then I freakin loved it. This was back before DBZ got to be uber popular. After I finished DBZ like years before FUNi finished translating I had to move on to other anime and the only other anime I like a whole lot better is Trigun, I have never seen any anime show rival Trigun and once again I finished that short run of episodes before Cartoon Network finished it or actually before they began showing it!
To me if you like anime and you like Trigun then this Firefly is the closest and best thing in real live action series you can get to it. And it is a lot better than the old tired and true star trek franchise or battlestar galactica.
However I think the movie lacked, it had a good cast like always and everyone did their lines good they just needed more time to play it all out, but that is understandable since it was meant to play out over SEASONS not 2 hours. The sad thing is no network wanted or had the resources to invest in Firefly for Seasons and joss would not want to sign up to do it again if he could not retain all rights and probably even make sure it would not get cancelled again before the next season is finished. And movies probably tend to be more money making than a tv series. - SLIPSTR3AM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0w00t! This is the stuff I want to hear.
- vibri2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I loved Firefly and thought Serenity was pretty good. I don't want to see the story end but I would prefer a TV series to another movie. Even if they could pump out one movie a year I think you could get so much more story into a 24 episode season.
- jmasters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, and I forgot to mention - Orson Scott Card had this to say about Serenity, which is one of the reasons I even considered seeing the movie.
http://www.hatrack.com/osc/reviews/everything/2005-09-30-extra.shtml - batmanjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Contrary to popular belief, Joss is not god, or any form of godly being. His fetish for psycho female characters that can whoop all kinds of ass, is boring.
The TV show was awesome and pretty original. Personally, I think the whole River storyline is boring. I'm much more interested in pretty much every other crew member except her.
The movie was alright. The more I think about the film though the less I like. The reavers make absolutely zero sense. I mean these are people on the fringe of sanity, but they can pilot ships really well, and can stay organized enough on a ship to keep them running. To me they remind me of zombies from bad horror movies.
I would be interested in a sequel but only they got rid of some of the most interesting crew and they didn't leave enough time between the end of the series and the beginning of the movie to really have all that many storylines available.
Good luck fanboys on getting your sequel, I highly doubt it will happen. - vniow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Boo! Ads before viewing the page.
Hope it pans out though although I would have liked a bit more info... - thecrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah whatever dude.
- dperrin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
- craigm01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes please!! i want a sequal! or better yet let's just see the Firefly series make it back to T.V.!!
- Buddybot111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree, the river scenes were absolutely horrible, they were all right in the series but got way out of hand in the movie. Also the reavers, the explanation doesnt make perfect sence like stated above, how are they organized? To continue on that, in the series they say new reavers are made when people "look" at them, this doesn't make any sence at all. The movie left lots of wholes from the series.
- hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Joss Whedon's camp" = "The secretary that answers the phone", not "Joss Whedon".
- locojones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The movie cost $38 million to produce, and that doesn't include costs associated with advertising, distribution, revenue sharing with theaters, etc. that must be recouped by the studio. As a result, the traditional formula is that, for a movie to make a profit, it must gross 3-4x its production costs. Thus, Serenity would need to bring in $114-152M in worldwide box office sales to be considered a success.
Worldwide, Serenity has only grossed about $38M. Approximating a $7.50 ticket price, that means it had an audience of roughly 5 million viewers. Even assuming that every one of those people also buy a DVD (using a 'high' average price of $20.00 per DVD), that still only amounts to $10M in additional sales.
A $48M gross (including DVD sales) on a movie that cost $38M to make is a LOSS, and not one a studio would likely repeat.
Serenity is dead. Get over it. - Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is EXCELLENT news!
- mkjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did pretty well in the UK, reached number 1 and stayed there for a few weeks.
Sadly none of my local cinemas had it :-( so I await a DVD release. - ITOAO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The movie was OK. I really liked the series. I was upset that they killed some of the characters in the movie. I liked them and the dynamic just doesn't seem right without them.
- veprjack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Although I was an original "Trekkie" and even mailed a letter (before email) protesting the cancellation of Kirk and Spock, I hadn't seen "Firefly" until last year. It was love at first sight; I couldn't believe a show that good had been canceled.
When I heard the movie was being made I was thrilled but feared it wouldn't live up to the series. Man was I WRONG - "Serenity" was, hands down, one of the best Sci-Fi movies I have ever seen!!! The characters are REAL/FLAWED and interesting; the story is compelling. I want MORE!!!
I hope there will be a sequel OR they do a series of TV movies on the Sci-Fi channel. Whedon has a lot more gas in the tank and fans are ready for more. - jmasters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw Serenity in the theater, not knowing what to expect and walked out saying, "Hot Damn! THIS is good sci-fi!". Okay, without TV, I downloaded all the episodes (Thank you bittorrent!). Family and I enjoyed it so much, we bought the DVD's!
Now, gorran it... When't my pre-ordered Serenity DVD gonna come in? On U-day? A brown coat's gotta get his ass-whuppin in some way or another. And my kids are constantly pestering me about what the Reavers look like... I'm afraid they're gonna have nightmares after this. :-)
I'd like to see another series! Yeah, Okay.. I'll have to watch them via bittorrent, but I'm open to buying the DVD's and puttin' 'em right next to my Babylon 5 DVD's...
I want some quality Sci-Fi! When's Battlestar coming back on? Or 24? (okay, okay... that's fiction, but those cool toys for keeping real time tabs are almost out of the sci-fi realm, and into non-fiction. :-) - pyrox420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm all up for a sequel. :) Even a low budget one!
- BSpolice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From TFA: "IGN FilmForce checked with Joss Whedon's camp who denied the claim"
Boooo for feeding the rumor mill. - FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't see "Serenity, " but re:
"Even the greatest martial arts actors have used sped-up film for kinetic effect, there's no shame in it!"
Fu replies:
Actually, when Bruce Lee did fight scenes on TV [The Green Hornet] or in his starring roles in movies, they had to SLOW DOWN the action for viewing. He moved too fast for the audience to see what he was actually doing.
But since I have yet to see Serenity, you might be right about the need to speed up Summer Glau's action scenes. I can't argue there --don't know.
Serenity never played on a screen anywhere in my county. :-( - jasonbc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If not enough people were willing to watch the show for FREE, then certainmly not a lot of people are going to specd $10 to see it."
I had never even heard of Firefly. I saw the movie based on its trailer... Then I saw it again... Then I bought the Firefly DVD's. I can't wait for the movie to hit DVD. If they make more episodes or movies, you can bet I'll give them a try. - dsxmakina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Like a lot of people, I never watched Firefly when it was on.Finally got around to watching it just before Serenity came out.
Result: Bummed out that such an awesome story has come to an end.
The show was too good for mainstream tv. Maybe SciFi channel will give it a shot like they have for BSG. -
