- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -1/+32no Hotel Rwanda, City of God, or God Grew Tired of Us?
- CoreyTamas, on 09/04/2008, -1/+23Here's one I think they missed:
DANCER IN THE DARK (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168629/%29
Her problem: Musical-loving woman who is going blind is going to lose her job if anyone finds out. Naturally, she lives in scrunting poverty as it is. She has a rotten son and, of course, the father is nowhere around. This is the cheeriest part of the story, btw. Later, the small bit of money she has been saving in a tin is stolen by the guy from Hill Street Blues and she has to kill him when he attacks her. Then she ends up on death row and hung by the neck. To music, no less.
Your problem: Beer you put in the fridge 10 minutes ago is still warm. - goldfenix, on 09/05/2008, -1/+19I dug you for City of God.
I watched that movie and wondered to myself, "A director can get world class acting out of five year old kids, but George Lucas can't get multi-million dollar actors to do anything better than really bad melodrama?" - Lucas123, on 09/04/2008, -0/+15Leaving Las Vegas is another depressing flick. BTW, "The Diving Bell and The Butterfly" was an excellent movie that closely followed the book, enough so that at the end I still found I couldn't stand Jean-Dominique. Quadriplegic that he was, he still treated his faithful ex-wife like garbage.
- santiago1, on 09/04/2008, -1/+16 I submit "Falling Down" with Michael Douglas.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106856/
Oddly enough, I can greatly relate to this movie.... - adrenalmedulla9, on 09/05/2008, -1/+12Uh, hello, what about Catwoman? Do any of you know how ecstatic I was when I was finally permitted to leave the theatre? Oh, God, words cannot describe how awesome life felt after that.
- Feep, on 09/05/2008, -1/+9Dugg for Hotel Rwanda. Man, that movie...
- ap1983, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6I don't think these movies negate the struggles everyone faces in their lives, they just remind us that life indeed sucks!
- seniorgrossy, on 09/05/2008, -1/+7Don't worry... It's me....Casper....
- blogosphear, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5The Fly II
seriously they ***** that dog up. - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -1/+6Memento?
- cRmtIMe, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5I just saw "Kids" and I knew it was going to be on this list. That was one intense movie. Pretty depressing.
- merdiesel, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4If only all rapists got aids from their victims.
- Nearoschyth, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4Is awesome, messes with your mind, and makes you think. But it's not really in the same vein as the other movies on this list. Amazing, but not shocking.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4I remember seeing "Kids" a few years back, when I was about 13-14 I think.
At the end she's asleep on the couch and the guy wakes up you're like "Oh snap....he's not gonna....oh ***** he's doin it" then he starts shagging her and it ends... - ShadowLady, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3why the clockwork orange picture if its not even mentioned? and yay an article that you cant read if youre actually planning to see the movies you havent yet because everything is full of spoilers. great.
- Gm7Cadd9, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Irreversible.
Time Destroys Everything.... - TheKingInYellow, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3KIDS is a really ***** movie disguised as a really depressing movie.
- EarthBoundX5, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3Isn't the scene used in the title from A Clockwork Orange? Why is that not on the list if its used?
- lifeisgoooooood, on 09/05/2008, -1/+4It'a a Wonderful Life (1946), it should be right up there !
- hartley, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3I thought Ken Park was more messed up than Kids.
As for my personal choice, Gummo. - tdogzthmn, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2I think "The Little Match Girl" was one of the most depressing books I read.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Grave of the Fireflies?
- sleeknerve, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Wow, this is actually a good, non CRACKED, well written list, ive seen most of these excellent movies and they really do ope your eyes
- rmxz, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Grave of the Fireflies deserves to be eon this list.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grave_of_the_Fireflie ...
Described by Roger Ebert as one of the most powerful anti-war movies ever made. - neko6, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2then more victims would get AIDS from them?
- CoreyTamas, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2He starred on Hill Street Blues, too. Great actor. You're quite right. That movie made me want to throw myself off a bridge... but his work is consistently good.
- GoKings, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3That 120 days of Sodom and Funny Games sound like some really ***** up movies. I like horror movies, and some demented ones, but those sound way too ***** up for me to even bare.
- GlitchEnzo, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2That is the saddest movie I have ever watched. I cried like a baby.
It definitely deserves to be on this list. - TheMachine1, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2I just want some breakfast.
- sandersdamnit, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Am I the only one here who ***** hates Requiem for a Dream? I thought it was boring except for ass 2 ass. I like Aronofsky's other film's, and his version of Robocop will hopefully be awesome, but Requiem and Donnie Darko are jerk-fests for emo kids.
Also The Grey Zone is a pretty goddamn depressing movie.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_grey_zone - andrewlotta, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Is it normal to have seen every film on that list?
I'm a huge fan of independent movies. - Brododium, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Permitted?
Who was keeping you there? - awesometastic1, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3How about Legends of the Fall? Seriously depressing movie. Youngest bro gets machine gunned down right in front of the middle bro. Oldest bro at the time is layed up in the hospital. Father has a stroke and goes all decreped fast. Wife of older bro (who was the fiance of the youngest bro before he got killed) kills herself as she's in love with middle bro, but not before middle bro abandons her and travels the world. Middle bro's wife gets killed. He then becomes an exile for his whole life, running from the law, basically making orphans of his children who go live with his brother. He then is finally mauled by a grizzly bear in the wilderness and gets eaten (presumably)
Did i mention the high point in the movie is the part where the surviving members of the family unite putting aside their fighting with each other and they kill a bunch of people that came to kill them (who also happen to be law enforcement)? - bluemist, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2I only watched Lilya 4-ever in that list, and boy was it so lonely. And to think that her story really is happening somewhere to someone right this minute...
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Requiem for a Dream was a great movie. It made me realize I have a pretty good life. It was depressing, and realistic.
Salo, on the other hand, is absolutely disgusting. It has no "real life" connection with me, it only makes me feel like I was watching something so grotesque, I couldn't wait until it was over. I'm glad I saw it, but I will never watch it again. It's ***** horrible. - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2I don't need movies to depress me, I can just watch the news...
- sandersdamnit, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Who gives a ***** that movie sucks and so do you Muncee"*****"nuts
- sandersdamnit, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1"Semlls like a pound of *****!"
Gummo FTW - marioara, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1I've seen half of these movies and yes I love my life now!
- oldhick, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1"i have no legs, i have no legs"
"butterscotch"
Always loved that movie. Casper was sooo loveable. - zip000, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1The movie was pretty lousy, but the dog part was just really sad and depressing.
- TheMachine1, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1"APOCALYPSE NOW"
Only one I saw and it was pretty hopeless situation. But I think the kind of hopelessness a typical Digger feels in the modern industrial world might actually improve in a situation where your physically trying to survive and do a difficult job in a hostile environment. - AllButOneDay, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I liked Funny Games. Mostly for the actors though. Far from perfect, I agree. But, come on. When that golf ball came rolling back into frame after they left I couldn't help but laugh hysterically.
Player 1
Level 2
to each his own though... - Ubergoober3, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Children of Men? Most depressing movie I've ever seen.
- 3leggedHorse, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Vera Drake I only saw a preview, it's about back street abortions. ***** that.
- danlowlite, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2Strange. I can't watch this movie again. I mean, I probably could, but I would need some serious convincing. Just horribly depressing. The music, while good, makes the whole thing just more depressing.
- Varney, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I'd include Ingmar Bergman's 'Through a Glass Darkly'. Watching a seemingly happy family unravel in the midst of mental illness is both engrossing and depressing.
- shibainu, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1The Pursuit of Happyness
His problem: Laid off. Wife left. Broke.
Your problem: Laid off. Wife left. Broke. - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1I suppose I'd enjoy this article more if such haughty proclamations of my problems being limited solely to not getting the last slice of cake had any truth to them. All the same, I think The Power Of One would have been a good addition.
