- malan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+65Blood Diamond may have been overlooked because 99% of the audience, filmakers and actors were all covered in diamonds that evening, no?
- wisam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+54Sad that Children of Men didn't win the cinematography award. The cinematography in this movie was great. Some shots were outstanding.
- fozi999, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Nice to see Pan's Labyrinth win 3 but how could it not win best foreign language film?!
- hoppdawg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24The Departed may have got Marty an Oscar, but Goodfellas is his best movie.
- hpfilter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19My heart bleeds for Mark Wahlberg, who with his profanely funny dialogues did a class act. Should have won it.
- malfourmed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I haven't seen Happy Feet yet, but Cars was the first Pixar movie I was disappointed in. It was okay, but nothing special; I'm not surprised it didn't win.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Scorsese didn't win for The Departed he won for everything else that got overlooked for the past 20 years
btw The Departed is a great film but not a best Oscar winning film. - ButterBuddha, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15My only disappoint is that Happy Feet won instead of Cars....
- ravishjunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9from stone cutters: "Who rigs every Oscars night? we do, we do..."
- janmc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9 I thought Jack Nicholson was way more restrained than usual actually.
Scorsese had to win this year or there would have riots. IMO he won based on his track record and not just the Departed. - strangerzero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I didn't think departed was that great as a film. The acting was top-notch but the film itself was just so-so.
- mattcoady, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Cinematography was a toss up, but I thought it would've stolen editing
- YellowStar, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Scorsese did a mediocre job with the Departed IMO. Nicholson was allowed to ham it up as usual. Some scenes were not that great. And we've seen this type of movie before - in fact it was based on a Hong Kong movie.
Stephen Frears' job as director for the Queen was tougher and made what could have been a run-of-the-mill "tribute" flick into something more meaningful. Frears should have won. - whiterussian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@shadekeiko
I don't think that's true. While I don't doubt that the Oscars can be somewhat corrupt, what with the immense multi-million dollar campaigns that the studios fund that sway voters unfairly, I think it's pretty on the level, voting-wise. They're not going to fix the broadcast just to create an "upset" for whatever reason (ratings?). I've seen Pan's Labyrinth, but not The Lives of Others, although I've heard it's wonderful. Just to compare, Pan's Labyrinth has a 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and The Lives of Others has 94%, so it seems like it could've gone either way. Plus I'm sure a lot of the stuffy old voters couldn't handle a fantasy movie for adults. - diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The Oscars are now 'Green'. What does that mean?
- wisam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6For the same list plus acceptance speeches (text and video)
http://www.oscar.com/oscarnight/winners/ - ngonzales80, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Yeah, he was there.
Since he won, does that mean we don't need to worry about recounts? - logicalnoise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Ellen did a joke then the shadow people did the logo.
- stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41) Infernal Affairs wasn't high on the radar of the academy 4 years ago.
2) The film won best adapted screenplay, a clear admission that the material is from another source.
3) Though the subject matter is the same, each film has a different approach. The Departed spends more time with the characters and you get a better idea of what they are experiencing.
Having seen both I think the Departed is a better film, and while I agree it isn't Scorsese's best picture or the best picture made this year, I am satisfied with its win. - nemothewhale, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Where is snakes on a plane?
- bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Hmph! I'm not surprised. A Scanner Darkly wasn't even nominated.
- MrFoodMonster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Children of Men didn't win anything. At the very very least it deserved Cinematography, as it was one of the most beautifully shot films I've ever seen. What a disappointment. At least The Departed got best director and best film...
- PureGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was hoping that Children of Men would've picked up Adapted Screenplay, but I'm happy with The Departed winning it, along with Best Picture.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Little Miss Sunshine deserved to be nominated so many times. It was an amazing movie
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Happy Feet: cute animals dancing to modern songs... wow, highly original in the CGI business.
- HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, no love for CoM... Oh well, at least it got recognized.
- wigginz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Saw it in London in Jan. It's an amazing movie, very very powerful and dramatic. Some of the scenes were so intense that I left the theater feeling a little paranoid myself. Forest Whitaker was great, definitely deserved to win.
- logicalnoise, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6sorry but alan arkin is a better actor and did a better job with his role than eddie. And if anything marky mark would have won if arkin hadn't.
- CatalystDM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So was Gore actually there to give the acceptance speech, or not?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Bah, The Departed should have won nothing. Its a direct copy of Infernal Affairs, Hong Kong 2002. That was an original and thrilling movie which I greatly enjoyed.
Why do they always have to copy things and claim as their own? Why not give the original film 4 Oscars as a foreign film in 2002? Oh yeah we need a couple years to copy it and claim as our own... - OneBagel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sorry for posting again but i just wanted my opinion in here you can digg me down its all good...
1. Children of Men should've gotten way more credit.
2. The Departed was good, but could've been better and professionally wasn't that great.
3. I'm glad Dream Girls got some.
4. Pans was a fantastic film
5. Children of Men should've gotten it for cinematography - Nick519, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i too was bummed that CoM didn't get any awards. what a powerful piece of work that movie is. still, i was glad to see pan's labyrinth win some awards. i saw it on saturday night, and it's a fantastic movie, too -- well deserving of the awards it won. i was sorry to see united 93 get snubbed.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+2Del Toro does deserve some recognition for what he does. He's an incredible director.
- anchorboi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That was surprising.
But unlike last year (Crash), this time the Best Picture oscar didn't go to a film with any ambitious social or political connotations so maybe the Academy members wanted to make up for that by giving an award to "The Lives of Others" which has strong political background about the GDR history and its brutal system of control and observation. - HanSolo69, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4ugh, The Departed wasn't actually *that* good. the best part about it was that at 2 1/2 hours it managed not to feel like it was dragging on.
- strangerzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Lives of Others is truly a classic film. If you haven't seen it you are missing out on the best film of 2006 in IMHO.
- Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm with you on Children of Men.. but as of the rest of the stuff you said... umm no.
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Yeah, no Oscars for Goodfellas and he won 1 for The Departed (only Oscars for directing counted)? And Nicholson was ruining the film for me too. He's turned into a crazy clown and it shows.
- myxyplik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting to note that ILM won their first visual effects award since Forrest Gump, which was 12 years ago. Otherwise, meh. I could give a crap about award shows in general anymore.
- tenzen10, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8The Oscars are a sham. Crash was a terrible movie that taught nobody anything they didn't already know before. Crash: "Don't be a racist, we're actually all very similar" - OMGZ WOW. The Departed is literally a scene for scene replica of "Infernal Affairs". If you haven't seen it, I recommend you all watch it and realize how dumb it is that The Departed won anything at all. Every scene except for the most contrived and, in my opinion, unnecessary part, which I don't want to ruin for you all.
I have lost all faith in any of the Award shows. The Grammys and the Oscars are complete bullcrap. - PotterChick958, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. I was crushed when Cars didn't win. I love Cars. The only reason I think Happy Feet won (and kinda made me laugh) was because the whole thing was a political statement about the environment. I thought Cars was a much better movie.
Dancing penguins? wtf. I like a world of cars better. - RonAcierno, on 02/07/2008, -1/+2Any one seen The Last King of Scotland?
If so how was it? - Boofster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OMG so true. That fat chick just yelled and shook her massive stuffed cleavage. I was dizzy!
Manufactured singers FTmf'nL !
Screw Idol and screw people that think talent comes out of it. - one1time, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stubadub:

Weird I felt that Infernal Affairs had better context and better character development. At one point I felt that the screenplay award should not have been given as it is a copy of another film, but when you look closely at it the culture differences alone within the movie, one can't help but require a huge rewrite as many of the underlying themes would not be understoon in North America. To me the Departed was too long of a movie and key points were not translated properly to create the full effect (e.g. the cast on the broken arm in infernal affairs with the morse code created such suspense not found in Departed). To each their own in the end, Goodfellas should have gotten Scorcese his first anyways. - dorey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3couldn't The Great Academy have done a better job of hiding their bias by having the 2 best awards (Director and Picture) presented by people who are not best friends of / starring in the film that won both?? I mean seriously, we get that Scorcese is friends with Lucas, Speilberg, and Coppola. Is it appropriate to have them give their buddy the award? And Jack Nicholson giving the award to ... *drumroll* ... The Departed ! They couldn't have scripted it any... better (?)
They said Scorcese said The Departed was his first film "with a plot" (!??!?) Personally I thought that the best thing that plot had going for it was at the end when I got the big joke of the film .(spoiler....) "Ohh! They're all Departed. With this cast I totally didn't expect them to kill off all the main characters. That was quite a twist."
If you agree with the Academy and loved the film, I'm sorry, but someone had to say it. I didn't dislike the movie but I dont think it's the best. I do, however, want to go buy a Sprint cell phone for some reason... thats strange - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jZNk230DKE
Best acceptance speach ever. - NowakFilms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ms. Hudson was "bouncier" than Beyonce and I'm relieved that she didn't have a "wardrobe malfunction" which looked imminent during her performance at the awards.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -4/+5/me missed the (rigged) show on purpose.
You know if the Academy Awards weren't so God awful boring, I'd probably of watched, but as it stands, I'd rather watch rocks grow, than watch them. - kidcodea, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3many americans obviously dunno the difference between screaming ya guts or singing.
hudson annoying timbre and long endless screaming in blackbitch mode on a edited and filtered movie got even worse live.
she made beyonce look like heaven or paradise. a girl that knows how to sing without breaking the ears off everyone. much sweeter and professional performance delivery.
to give an oscar for such a talentless performance is almost criminal.
also eddie murphy deserved more recognition than he got, coz his character had depth and contrast within, from the stereotyped black artist to the suffering of a man inside, all in a few scenes. flawless. - logicalnoise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Happy feet was my only qualm. I was able to take walking with the penguins for best documentary last year because it was honestly a good documentary (though every other nominee was better and had a real messege that year). However I gave happy feet a try with a friend(both 21). Honestly we spent the first 30 minutes laughing at how bad it was and then after that it just got more quiet and quiet until it finally ended. It was shark tale-minus the racist overtones.
