- Br3ach, on 08/18/2008, -0/+11The shark still looks fake
- jklyon, on 08/18/2008, -0/+6Journey to the Center of the Earth still sucked.
- mojoel, on 08/18/2008, -0/+6That's a gross thought: dodging projectiles.
- insertAliasHere, on 08/18/2008, -0/+6You must be very proud.
/facepalm - jerrycan, on 08/18/2008, -1/+73D pictures? Fiddle dee dee, When I was young, we used to stare at the sun, till our eyes bled. AND WE LIKED IT!
- odinfire, on 08/18/2008, -0/+5Just imagine... Gigli in 3-D! Oh the possibilities.
- jer.williams, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4Wait, all future Pixar films will be released in 3D? That's the most interesting thing I read in the article.
"'It's an important part of our business going forward,' says Alan Bergman, president of Walt Disney Studios, which will release an animated canine-superhero movie, Bolt, in 3-D in November, as well as all its future Pixar films." - LacBouleaux, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4'Dial M for Murder' was done in 3-D, but being a good cinematographer, Hitchcock used it subtly. Would pay to see that.
- rufishinjr, on 08/18/2008, -0/+43D movies? What is this newfangledness? It's sorcery, to be sure! Grab the pitchforks!!
- drachemorder, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4It makes a lot of sense, as Pixar movies are rendered as a 2-D projection of 3-D models anyway. At a basic level, rendering one in 3-D would pretty much just be a matter of moving the (virtual) camera slightly to one side and re-rendering.
- nerdherder, on 08/18/2008, -0/+4I like to call it seizurevision.
- tito13kfm, on 08/18/2008, -1/+4People buy hotdogs when the go to the movies? I thought it was a strict popcorn and sour patch kids only zone.
- NeoCortex, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3Next you'll be telling me the Cubs will win the World Series.
- gemlarin, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3The New RealD works off light polarization, not dual camera/dual color. The New glasses are not dual color like the old ones, they are polarized and will not work for non RealD viewing. All the new films, Pixar, etc are in RealD. Just went to see Journey to the Center of the Earth in RealD and the previews for a bunch of new movies were in RealD. I have a set of the glasses, tried them on dual color 3D. They don't work. Not that it negates your point, there are ways around everything. Just thought it was important to point out.
- onesojourner, on 08/18/2008, -0/+3they are going to have to do something new to get me to the theater for anything other than a blockbuster. why leave the couch when I can wait a few months and get it in blu and pause it when I have to take a leak. I don't even have to step in dried up soda to get back to my seat.
- EtherGnat, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2Perhaps, just perhaps, there is room for both?
- EtherGnat, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2That ship's already sailed.
- norman619, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2This gimmick will not justify the $12.00 cost of a movie ticket then the $4 - $5 hot dogs. that's what it costs to go see a movie here in NYC. It's a rip off. I moved here from Fort Wayne, IN. the cost of a movie there is about $8. The first 2 showings of any movie(matinee) is $5. In NYC there is no such thing as matinee. I have had to pass on most movies due to the crazy cost. This year I have gone to see 3 movies since I moved here 3 months ago. Back in Indiana I went to the movies almost weekly. It's insane that a movie here costs almost as much as a DVD.
- ZenMojo, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2Went to Disney. Saw 6 minutes of the goofy but jaw-dropping "Honey, I shrunk the audience." 3-D really needs a lot more use.
- jonnyfrag, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2Current Imax and ReelD (Disneys) is a HUGE step up from the old anaglyph (red and green) from the good ole days. The best was the polarized stuff from 80s resurgence. Friday the 13th Part 3 has some of THE best 3D technically ever filmed, even if it was not a well crafted film. The new stuff is just as good though. The type of 3D used can even be used at home by getting a field sequential 3D box (dont worry about the ones that say they convert live tv to 3D...its pretty crappy)
You can find these real easy by googling or hitting ebay. There are few legit field sequential releases, though there are other ways of obtaining bootlegs of the classic 3D movies on that bay of e. Make sure you use a CRT tv or a GOOD flatscreen (120hz refresh rate minimum) Don't try it on your $800 Vizio like mine :(
Not a sales pitch but if you like 3D , you can get it a home these days for not too much money. - nakile, on 08/18/2008, -0/+2The only negative I see is that it basically doubles rendering time. You'll have to do double the frames and that could be a problem because rendering tends to be a long process as it is.
- 3Dimka, on 08/18/2008, -1/+23D format will not help much against pirating, there are 3D monitors at the market (I own one) and as a cheap solution - anaglyph red/cyan glasses on a regular monitor. Taking a screen video in a movie theater would be a problem though, you'll need 2 cameras instead of just one.
- gemlarin, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1Honestly, I like 3D. The concept, not the application.
I went to see Journey to the Center of the Earth a couple weeks ago in RealD (the new 3D). Wanting to recapture the memories I had of watching Jaws in 3D as a child, I quickly remembered what I don't like about 3D.
The 30 minutes it took for my eyes to get used to it, and the lingering headache that carried on long after the movie ended from the strain on my eyes.
Also, damn sexi glasses. - RobotKeaton, on 08/18/2008, -1/+2"Over the next couple of years, we'll get our Gone With the Wind and our Citizen Kane,"
That's a very bold statement. As if just being in 3-D is gonna make things classic. - web2pointYo, on 08/18/2008, -1/+2What are these movie theaters you speak of?
- norman619, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1I am one of those people that can't stand popcorn. I hate having to digg it out from between my teeth.
- Fun4Two, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1James Cameron's Avatar should make waves when it comes.
- Jektal, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1I think the point was that in the next couple of years a classic will be released in the medium that will validate 3D and make it de-facto.
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1I was actually just talking about this yesterday. The projector we just had installed in our home theater (the F10) has a brand new brother model (the F10 AS3D) that projects in 3D; a feature we thought sounded pretty silly at first but according to the company, Projection Design, it's going to be used more and more as time goes by. Keeping in mind these are $20K+ projectors meant for professional applications, this is still a step forward in bringing large-scale 3D movies to the living room.
http://www.projectiondesign.com/Default.asp?CatID= ... - nickels, on 08/18/2008, -1/+2Hopefully 3d will catch on, as my 61" 3-D capable Samsung LED DLP is waiting ready. Not mentioned is the fact that 3D could be included on the PS3 with an updated driver, and that Mitsubishi is working on that already. The shutter glasses and software are still too expensive to buy until there is a reason, like more 3d content!
- 3Dimka, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Thank you, but I know difference between Anaglyph and Polarized glasses.
You can steal 3D video fin IMAX/RealD theater using dual camera setup and polarized glasses/filters. You will have 2 separate video channels with 2 different views. Then you can convert it to anaglyph and share on the web. - DforSpiD, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1I agree norman... although I always eat it, and enjoy pop corn I always regret it for that reason
- odinfire, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Only if you consider Bennifer porn, in which I do not.
- ScreenRant, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Personally I don't like the gimmicky shots in 3D movies, where stuff pokes out towards the audience. What I think is amazing is the depth it gives to a conventional scene, putting the audience in the same room with the actors.
- valleyvideo, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1I saw the 'reaching for the phone' scene from Dial M at Universal Studios. It was amazing -- wish I could have seen the whole movie.
- Culyt, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1Is Gigli a euphemism for porn?
- TabControl, on 08/18/2008, -0/+1I can only imagine watching porn in 3-D now.
- valleyvideo, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1Avatar and Toy Story 3 will be the litmus test for the artistic merits of 3D, but with shlock like Journey to the Center of the Earth making money, there's no stopping this train. It's in the theaters' and studios' best interest.
- quail20, on 08/18/2008, -0/+0This isn't the first or second time that they pushed 3-D in the theatres since the 1950's. Their biggest problem is making sure the idiots in the projection booth aren't trying to show the 3-D film on a regular screen and that the expensive lens system on the projector is calibrated correctly. Ever get headaches while watching a 3-D show? It's because of such idiocy. The only impressive 3-D show I've ever seen was done at Disneyland & Disney World in the early 90's. (They used to work over their projection systems daily and they used a proper silver screen.) I don't see 3-D becoming movie mainstream in the cinemas until they can make the system idiot proof.
- ZenMojo, on 08/18/2008, -1/+1Funny, that's how much movies cost in Los Angeles. You think it's because the standard of living is higher than in Muskogee?
- engwar, on 08/18/2008, -1/+1Back in MY day, movies were a nickel.
blah blah blah
Quit yer yappin' - norman619, on 08/18/2008, -1/+1I'm not talking baout "back in the day." I did not step into the way back machine. So please STFU.
- koldmilk, on 08/18/2008, -1/+1meh, they hurt my eyes.... though sometimes awesome...
- ramiknet, on 08/19/2008, -0/+0I saw Beowulf in 3D, and i have to say the technology is wonderful, but after the initial Wow to the 3d effect, you don't see or feel much the 3D effect, but it's not bad... Waiting for more 3D movies :)
- monkeynuts84, on 08/19/2008, -0/+0I guess we're going to be swamped with 3D remakes of all those crappy B-list movies.
- HillerMylife, on 08/18/2008, -1/+1I think that's called "video games."
