- robosexy, on 06/25/2009, -6/+39For me, a 31 year old who saw this in the theater as a kid, I remember how amazing it was.
Ledger's performance was great to watch, but he's often favored, I think, because he was good looking, young and hip. He was like a (oh man you're going to hate me for this) goth joker. The Dark Knight was a great movie, but I think of it as the young cool, emo kid. Whereas the Burton's Batman is so grown up and comfortable with itself that it didn't mind being a little silly.
Nicholson broke the mold, as the article mentioned. Burton's Batman was grand, fantastic, and Keaton was humble and didn't take himself too seriously. - rblancarte, on 06/25/2009, -2/+28I agree TDK is good, but you are completely missing the point of this article. This isn't about good or not good, it is about how the first Batman movie altered movies to the point where TDK had people lined up days in advance.

- Fullvinyl, on 06/25/2009, -0/+18I always ask that of all my prey...I just like the sound of it.
- harrythe3rd, on 06/25/2009, -5/+23You have to be too young to have grown up with the first ones then. Michael Keaton is Bruce Wayne.
- chicagojack, on 06/25/2009, -0/+16Dugg for Vicky Vail
- robEstyles, on 06/25/2009, -0/+16I think we can all agree that the Batman movies really came to it's apex when the bat-suit added nipples.
God I hate Joel Schumacher - rocknog, on 06/25/2009, -2/+18Heath Ledger may have been the best Joker, but I still feel that Christian Bale can't hold a candle to Michael Keaton's Batman. Besides, we all know that Jack Nicholson paved the way in terms of the Joker being a psychopathic killer in a movie.
- bdbr, on 06/25/2009, -1/+16Keep in mind, the only "Batman" that most people knew of in 1989 was the campy one from the 60s with Adam West. "Zap! Pow! Ooomph!"
- Charlotte_Web, on 06/25/2009, -0/+14Gun, Bob.
- Coffeedemon, on 06/25/2009, -0/+12What the hell does goth or emo have to do with death metal?
- dontreplytome, on 06/25/2009, -1/+11Vail Fail. Try Vicki Vale.
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0000213/ - vicisaran, on 06/25/2009, -8/+18I LOVED Batman Begins and TDK, but this article sums up why Tim Burton's film is better: "Batman" is timeless. It is still as good today as it was 21 years ago. I predict BB and TDK won't have that same effect 21 years from now.
- gwaggy12, on 06/25/2009, -1/+10First, this is a remarkably well-written article.
Second, dugg for an awesome movie completely ruining the studio film industry by encouraging them to emulate its success. - DarthVolta, on 06/25/2009, -0/+9in before this turns into a thread arguing over what goth/emo/metal/punk really means..
- harrythe3rd, on 06/25/2009, -0/+8There are a number of comic book Jokers but comparatively speaking Ledger's Joker was a goth joker as compared to the more slapstick, gags playing an important role, and prop filled Jokers. At least both are sadistic. And heres a definition of Goth for you; Of or relating to a style of fiction that emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate. Stop thinking in terms of genres of music.

I am the night
I am.... - Deausx, on 06/25/2009, -8/+15I've seen The Dark Knight 2 or 3 times now, and you are the first person I have ever heard describe Ledger as goth.
Goth is whiny, emo, death metal, no-one-understands-me teen angst *****. How the hell does any of that translate into Ledgers joker that couldnt be argued for the comic book joker incarnations? - mojomac69, on 06/25/2009, -0/+7Prince soundtrack. FTW
- skaldicpoet9, on 06/25/2009, -4/+11I beg to differ. I think that The Dark Knight will be just as good 20 years from now as it is today. The first Batman movie was the first to establish the modern incarnation of Batman but by no means would I consider it the definitive iteration of the legend.
- rocknog, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6Sorry, can't get over Bale's friggin' growly Batman voice.
- CoD4, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6you have to adjust it
- jonwise80, on 06/25/2009, -1/+7Good article, well written, thoughtful, and based on good material.
- solid12345, on 06/25/2009, -1/+7TDK had too many plot holes though, I think it was overrated.
By the way, Batman's fight with the thug in the bell tower was more brutal than anything Nolan did. - harrythe3rd, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6This isn't something new either. You can find a number of origins for the joker in the comics.
- CoreyTamas, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6For you young'uns: The comments made in the article about controversy around Michael Keaton being cast are so very true. I remember watching a bit of TV shortly before the movie hit theaters and listening to a rant about how the casting was so wrong. I particularly remember the commentator saying "He doesn't even have a square jaw!"
I LOL'ed at it then. I still LOL at it now. - NovaPrime9, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6TDK is MUCH darker than Tim Burton's Batman. And TDK's Joker is far more frightening. I, too, would let my son watch Batman earlier than TDK. That said, though, my son is 7 and has seen neither. I'll give it a little more time.
- rblancarte, on 06/25/2009, -3/+9Actually
Bale Batman > Keaton Batman
Bale Bruce Wayne < Keaton Bruce Wayne - NeoCortex, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5I agree that Bale Batman > Keaton Batman, with one exception: Anytime Batman has to talk. Then it's Keaton all the way.
- trdrstv, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5not all movies were bad that year. Hell, not all movie sequals were bad that year, unless (for some reason) you didn't like "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"
- coopa, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5It's known as the 'many origins' Joker - the idea being that he doesn't /know/ who he is, or how he came to be the he is, or just doesn't want you to know the truth.
- tonychenyj, on 06/25/2009, -19/+24For me, Batman - The Dark Knight is the best so far. Heath Ledger is too good.
- gridbread, on 06/25/2009, -2/+61989 Batman is still amazing.
My only gripe for the latest Batman reboot is that the fight scenes in Begins were filmed terribly, when Batman was fighting it looked like they were violently shaking black construction paper.
Fight scenes like the clock tower showdown are still fantastic to this day. - inactive, on 06/25/2009, -3/+7The Dark Knight was a very good movie, but I think I actually like Tim Burton's Batman movie better. Its sequel was pretty bad, but the first one was great. Plus, it didn't make my throat uncomfortable listening to Batman speak.
- solid12345, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4No, the black goon in the leather jacket with sunglasses
- contradictator, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4PEREZ HILTON.
- bjs3171, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4what the ***** happened to Michael Keaton? i haven't seen him in a role in forever, and he is so good.
- Charlotte_Web, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4He almost killed a few careers, too. After Batman and Robin, Chris O'Donnell and George Clooney had to start doing TV shows, and Alicia Silverstone had a two year hiatus.
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4laserdisc
- solid12345, on 06/25/2009, -1/+5The Dark Knight had no style though, the only thing that set 1989 Batman in 1989 was the bat jet and the bat mobile, otherwise you'd think the movie was set in 1939 with the costumes and art deco sets, TDK was stale and had no unique look to it.
- Mpwns, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4i saw this opening night at a drive in(a place were you watch movies in your car), and after it was over the manager went on the the pa system to let us know due to the honking we seemed to to like it and welcomed everyone to stay to watch it again for free. i was 9 at the time and to this day its still the best time i had at the movies. also learned a lot about sex as a kid at the drive in.
- Fullvinyl, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3I think you mean nadir instead of apex. Schumacher did what Bane could not; for nearly eight years, he killed Batman. Come to think of it, Schumacher killed Batman WITH Bane.
- coopa, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3I would say it's 'Goth' in the way that HL's Joke was against the status quo...whatever the status quo was at the time. He would fly in the opposite direction of everyone whilst being completely psychotic about it.
To me at least he embodied the idea of 'chaotic evil'.
JN's Joker was a mob gangster who was sent psychotic by an accident that he blamed on Batman. - trdrstv, on 06/25/2009, -2/+5Exactly! Why does Batman need body armor? You want a timeless Batman, then you need 100% PURE WEST.
- skaldicpoet9, on 06/25/2009, -6/+9Let's all put on our rose-colored nostalgia glasses....
Don't get me wrong, Batman was a damn good movie especially when most of the movie going public still remembered Batman as colorful, eccentric and campy, thanks to the 60's incarnation. However, there are just too many things wrong with Batman. First, why does the Joker's origin have to be tied into Batman's origin? That is just lazy writing IMHO. Not only that but why did they feel the need to kill the Joker at the end? Or for that matter kill every villain at the end of every Tim Burton Batman flick? Yes, we know your movies are dark and Gothic Tim.
For me, the Dark Knight is the pinnacle of what a Batman movie, or any comic book movie, should be. Great characters that do justice to the source material and a amazong story of friendship, betrayal and battling philosophies. I am sorry but Batman doesn't even touch the storytelling that was present in TDK. - solid12345, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3And now, folks, it's time for "Who do you trust!" Hubba, hubba, hubba! Money, money, money! Who do you trust? Me? I'm giving away free money. And where is the Batman? HE'S AT HOME WASHING HIS TIGHTS!
- contradictator, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Honestly, I think we should appreciate ALL works of Bat-Fiction (Schumacher's abortions aside).
From the original Adam West show, to Burton's movies, all the wonderful animated adventures, and yes, Nolan's masterpieces, it's great to be a BatFan and have so many different, yet well-crafted and true-to-form pieces of entertainment.
(And of course I could've mentioned all the comics and movies serials, but we don't have all day.) - solid12345, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3You're wrong, the residents of Gotham were dressed as typical people from the 1930s, that is what made it so great, it harkened back to the roots of the original comic.
- trdrstv, on 06/25/2009, -1/+4Jackine Chan Batman > All.
