What to Look for: More bush. - readme, on 12/12/2008, -5/+27Dark Knight was the best looking disc I've played to date. Should have made the list.
- Trigonometron, on 12/13/2008, -1/+20Here's my EPIC "Must-Have": A f'king job.
- GRAVEWiSH, on 12/13/2008, -1/+17lord of the rings isnt on bluray

- Aadain, on 12/12/2008, -4/+17I actually have a few of those movies on Blu-Ray and they really do make use of the higher resolutions. I'm always hesitant to buy older movies on Blu-Ray because most studios don't spend the energy to do the proper capturing to look good on Blu-Ray. I've seen some movies that didn't look any better than DVD, and even a few that looked worse due to pixelization from simple scaling of the original source.
But movies like Close Encounters and Blade Runner really did go all out and they look amazing in Blu-Ray! In Blade Runner, you can see details I've never seen before on regular DVD or broadcast quality. These are what the studios should be doing to their back catalog when they produce Blu-Rays discs. - inactive, on 12/12/2008, -11/+23Well, I must have a Blue-Ray player first.
- koalaznbear, on 12/13/2008, -1/+12I dugg you up on the assumption it's not the Disney version you're referring to.
- akamurph, on 12/13/2008, -0/+10'techsavvy', can your savvy ass let me know when "Lord of the rings" is out on Blu Ray?
- dannymb877, on 12/12/2008, -8/+18Dugg for no Dark Knight
- silophysis, on 12/12/2008, -1/+11that movie is implied whenever you hear "must have blu ray"
we dont need to say it any more... - metroidragon, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1022. Planet Earth
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -4/+13The Dark Knight was a sloppy BR transfer. Only the Imax scenes look good.
- Autodidaddict, on 12/12/2008, -8/+16Can someone please explain to me why No Country For Old Men got all the critical acclaim it did. I've seen it over 4 times, and unlike many other movies it actually got worse each time I watched it, not better.
Did you guys really like this movie, or is this another "naked emperor" type of movie?
Any why would it be so much better in BluRay? The article lacks a logical explanation. I'm sorry, "soundscapes" doesn't cut it. When I buy a BluRay player, the first movies I'm getting are action and sci-fi movies. - inactive, on 12/13/2008, -2/+10I hear that Shindlers List has some awesome nude scenes too.
- batmandude8, on 12/12/2008, -0/+822. Black Hawk Down
Amazing movie, amazing video, and amazing sound (often overlooked). - stevieraveon, on 12/13/2008, -1/+8No "Planet Earth"?
- ivantalboys, on 12/13/2008, -2/+9If you have it at 1080p on your 42" you won't get anymore detail at 100" as it will still be 1080p.
- baractopus, on 12/12/2008, -7/+14Weak list.
- antdude, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6T2?
- MasterGrief, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6I think he was trying to.
- the2989, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6Maybe when bluray disc/player prices come down, I can't afford that *****.
- lunachique, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6Master and Commander is incredible in Blu-Ray. When the action is below deck you can hear the guys above working, and walking around. It's absolutely awesome.
- Ozzsanity, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6When LotR comes out on Blu-ray that will be the day I buy one of the players.
- GMirza, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6I think you forgot the sarcasm tag.
- ortucis, on 12/12/2008, -3/+8Lord of the Rings.
EDIT: Actually, the list sucks. You cannot just limit yourself to '20 must have' or 'top 10' ***** lists anyway. Watch everything you like in HD :P - wilf_brim, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5Serenity, hell yea. "I aim to misbehave".
- BogusJimmy, on 12/13/2008, -0/+5I don't live in the US but even I know he's talking about having Blu-Rays sent in the mail via Netflix, not via the "HD" Streaming.
- judicar, on 12/13/2008, -1/+6Did you actually watch the movie in the theater? It was the same there, iMax and 35mm have different aspect ratios (as it says on the sleeve even). Would you rather they just ran a black bar across the top and bottom of the imax scenes to make it all look the same? I've never understood why this confuses some people. And by people I mean morons.
- nwoolls, on 12/13/2008, -1/+5Dugg for "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen"
- IAmTheGuy, on 12/12/2008, -1/+5I have a problem calling some of those "epics" despite the fact that they are excellent movies.
- method7670, on 12/12/2008, -1/+5for blu-ray, you have to admit the action sequence would be better in blu-ray
- Balanced, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4If it's not a requirement, it may not be a good idea to put it on credit...
Some of us try to live within our mean. - SPARTACVS, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4Serenity on HDDVD was stunning. I hope Universal puts it out on Blu soon so more than just me and 5 other people can enjoy it in high def.
- Myonosken, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3I laughed far more than I should have at that comment....
- JCEEZ, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3problem solved... sit closer
- LowHz, on 12/13/2008, -2/+5Shows what you know about movies. Bullitt was shot in 1968 using the Technicolor film process which does have more saturated colors. And it was recorded in mono, so what you are really hearing is 1.0 x2.
BD is intended to play the original theatrical release in the home, which includes 24 fps and no loss in original image quality. It does _not_ magically make everything sharper/louder/surrounder. - timothycrash01, on 12/13/2008, -1/+4I disagree. Seeing a great film transfer of an old film shows off Blue Ray resolution far more. Seeing the Godfather at this resolution really shows how amazing film has always been - and a proper transfer makes 40 - 50 year old films look like they were shot yesterday.
Seeing The Dark Knight on Blue Ray is like 'oh yeah, it looks great'. But seeing The Wild Bunch is like 'holy *****, I never ever thought I'd see it look that good '.
The production design of Bladerunner is stunning, and it doesn't look dated anymore - it competes with most of todays CGI. But you'd never know that from some of the DVD transfers. - Myonosken, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Are you ***** stupid?
- GoKings, on 12/13/2008, -2/+5This list sucks... A lot of these movies may have been digitally re-mastered, but don't even come close to showing off full blu-ray potential... Something like the Dark Knight or 300 where the film was actually shot by a modern higher definition camera would be best...
Oh, and buried for not having the Planet Earth series on the list.. - inactive, on 12/13/2008, -1/+4Master and Commander is one of the best sounding Blu-Rays.
Also, War of the Worlds has some explosions that are mixed down to like 12 hz. (not that most systems can go that low) - EvilFerret, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Band of Brothers......I don't have may Blu-Ray movies in my collection yet (about 20), but Band of Brothers was the best Blu-Ray purchase I've made.
- timothycrash01, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3I don't think Bullitt would be any better in 5.1 It's a pretty gritty film, and sometimes the stereo mix suits a film just fine. When they remaster old films for 5.1 the sound seems to feel way cleaner / bigger than it should IMO.
I agree though - they shouldn't touch the colors either - sound and picture should be left as they were intended. - BirdCatcher, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3I digg your perspective.
- BirdCatcher, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Yeah I must pick that one up.
