- trer, on 05/05/2008, -3/+18Most controverial is Uwe Boll in that he continues to receive money to make crap movies.
Chalmskinn - TheKingInYellow, on 05/05/2008, -4/+18HOW DARE YOU LEAVE DAVID LYNCH FROM THIS LIST!
- Aerandir, on 05/05/2008, -3/+13Uwe Boll = I'm sick of my stomach.
- DiscoLando, on 05/05/2008, -1/+9I think there's a distinct but oft overlooked difference between being 'provocative' and being 'good'. One does not necessarily necessitate the other, and frankly the majority of the time they're never found together. The only exceptions to this would be the Stone's and the Moore's of the world who at least provoke us about historical and practical matters. Movies about eating dog crap and kinky sex don't belong anywhere near the same category.
- gnslngr1919, on 05/05/2008, -1/+8Did you read the whole list or just the first page? He is the last one.
- fsjenkins2000, on 05/05/2008, -3/+10Mr. Horse: "No sir, I didn't like it."
- finaldarkone, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6Vincent Gallo is the world's biggest douche bag. He's not a provocateur, he's a shameless self promoter. "Hi, I'm Vincent Gallo. Wanna blow me in the name of art?"
- ohhoe, on 05/05/2008, -2/+7Isn't ***** compared to them? Lynch is more known for mind ***** you instead of trying to shock you which it seems this list of directors does.
I'd rather watch a movie that ***** with my mind than one that just straight up is visually disturbing, ex. the fire hydrant scene in irreversible or any Miike films. - inactive, on 05/05/2008, -1/+6hmm, you just described the last 2500 years of western art ... excepting the "masquerading" part.
- timothycrash01, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4I wouldn't call David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch, John Sayles or Errol Morris controversial anymore. Perhaps Sayles back in the Matewan days. Morris's documentaries aren't exactly contraversial anymore (Standard Operating Procedure was pretty weak IMO). Jarmusch's films are like Disney flicks compared to Harmony Korine films. (I.e. Gummo vs. Deadman). Lynch's films are non-mainstream, but that's doesn't mean controversial. Inland Empire was crazy, but not controversial either.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5digg for chalmskinn.
i think that the production credits nowadays are far more creative than the schlock that they get slapped on to. - judicar, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4The Vengeance Trilogy is fantastic.
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.
Oldboy.
Lady Vengeance. - johnsonjoeb, on 05/05/2008, -1/+5Uwe Boll's on this list and Spike Lee is nowhere to be found = buried as inaccurate. Boll's pissed of gamers...Spike Lee has pissed off whole races INCLUDING his own at times.
- ohhoe, on 05/05/2008, -2/+6Wait- No Alejandro Jodorowsky?
- mysedai, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3When I saw the title of this article, my first thought was, "Hmmm... I wonder where John Waters ranks on the list?"
- spootmonkey, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3He's one of my favs but I don't think he's that controversial to be on the list...other than the great Requiem for a Dream.
- Lynxpro, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Agreed. I just read the article and wanted to post that I think the guy is an untalented douche. He makes whiney films. You watch them and you just want to punch him and tell him to act like a man. *Buffalo 66* was godawful boring, and *The Brown Bunny* was lame and boring even with the BJ. Ergo, he makes boring porn. And wow, he knows how to ride a bike a bit. So can Vanilla Ice. Which is to say, *Cool As Ice* is a better film than either of Gallo's works.
- YellowSnowDemon, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3I'm still waiting for Son of El Topo.
- timothycrash01, on 05/05/2008, -0/+3And Takashi Miike is now the 'mainstream' ***** up director for people that think they're into obscure films. (See your post below.)
- ohhoe, on 05/05/2008, -1/+4***** yes Takashi Miike. Visitor Q ftw.
- inactive, on 05/05/2008, -9/+12Oldboy is one of the greatest films ever made.
- Zzone, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2I agree that Brown Bunny was a terrible film, where it's sole purpose was to annoy decent film goes with a bad plot for an overhyped blowjob scene. But if Chloe S. got suckered into sucking it, it's her problem.
- egamipeaks, on 05/05/2008, -3/+5"Irreversible" is the most intense thing I have ever watched.
- nutsackorama, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2Klaus Kinski makes me nervous.
- ohhoe, on 05/05/2008, -1/+3Irreversible is now like the 'mainstream' ***** up movie for people that think they're into obscure film.
There's way way more ***** up movies out there. - judicar, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2That list lost all credibility the moment Uwe Boll's name popped up.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2no jodorowsky...how about svankmajer then?
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2i saw it (oldboy) at bnat5. lady vengeance is a visually stunning film.
- egonSchiele, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2if you're going for "provocative", shouldn't the 2g1c guy be #1?
- simbelmyrne, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2I saw it when it premiered at Cannes in '04, and it took my breath away. LOVE that movie. I also thought that "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" was incredible. More, Park! More!
- Vinterblod, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2Dugg for Werner Herzog, a true visionary who doesn't need to seek out controversy in order to create great art. I dare you to see any of his movies starring Klaus Kinski and not be taken aback by what they were able to create with their madness.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2he said "one of the greatest"...not THE greatest.
- stereoa, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1I'm sick of my stomach too.
- SolidSnake24, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Just take a look at his Filmography on IMDB, and you'll see 6 disasters in the making!
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0093051/
If only Far Cry were to be directed by Christopher Nolan or one of the Wachowski brothers.... - dougs55, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2I don't know about greatest overall but it sure had the gave me one of the greatest "holy *****!!!" experiences I've had in a movie theater recently.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/05/2008, -2/+3oh, i'm getting dugg down for saying production credits are cool?
sit ubu sit...good dog. i made this. ab-sooooo-lootly. stupid monkey. chalmskinn. bad robot. - timothycrash01, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Well the list is 'working' directors. He hasn't done a film in like 20 years - and his supposed next film is up in the air.
- ohhoe, on 05/05/2008, -1/+2I don't think Gallo deserves a place on the list. They were probably brainstorming and were like, HOLY ***** HE TOTALLY GOT CHLOE SEVIGNY TO BLOW HIM, HE HAS TO BE ON THERE.
- dstz, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1"One does not necessarily necessitate the other, and frankly the majority of the time they're never found together. Ahah, wow, you're delluded. Stones & Moore. Ahah. - ohhoe, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure it got a green light though, imdb says it's in production. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892411/
- aznhomig, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Why is Uwe Boll NOT the #1? I've seen many of Park Chan-Wook's movies such as JSA, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and definitely Oldboy, and albeit controversial, are good movies.
Uwe Boll simply gets credit for making golden ideas into pure *****. - TheKingInYellow, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1chan wook only has 5 movies and oldboy is the pinnacle. i'm a cyborg . . . more like 'i'm a cybored'.
- bludo, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Just want to recommend Oldboy.
- SpencerMc, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Did he hand pick his opponents for the boxing thing? 'Cause it seems that, as widely reviled as his movies are, someone that could beat the living snot out of hiim would have stepped up.
- iFrikkenR, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Torrents or none of these happened...
- carboyfilms, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1This is a really good article.
http://www.carboyfilms.com - ohhoe, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1No, I'd say Miike is the mainstream ***** up director for people who are into japanese gore and *****.
There are plenty of other directors and films that are better than what either director have made.
I can see you want to turn this into a whose dick is bigger contest, but I have a vagina so good luck with that one. :) - j5r5myk, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Fred Vogel anyone?
- egamipeaks, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1I could care less about looking for films just because they are "***** up". "Irreversible" works because it is so emotionally devastating... that is really the most intense aspect about it.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1is your internet broken?
you're a drut. -
