16 Elusive Objects of Desire in Film
avclub.com — Objects don't come more pedestrian than the dull recitation of facts and figures comprising Gray's Sports Almanac —unless, of course, you have a time-traveling DeLorean, in which case it's a ticket to untold riches. Perpetually shortsighted when it comes to maintaining the space-time continuum, Marty McFly recognizes the chance to make his fortune..

- minorthreat, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1I guess with the new Indy movie released today, they couldn't have two Indiana Jones movies listed side by side
- BrandonWicks, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1Yes, it's made worse by th fact that right after that they have Raiders... they really dropped the ball, didn't they?
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -1/+6i guess the grail shaped beacon was turned off while they were writing this list...no spanking for the av club.
- Myahon, on 05/22/2008, -0/+12I think we ALL desire a 1964 Chevy Malibu.... or is that just me?
- mathwizkid, on 05/22/2008, -0/+8Anything with the muppets in it should be dugg.

(does) - TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -3/+2"alot" is not a word. who do you think you are just coming in here and making up your own words?
- sadisticmind, on 05/22/2008, -2/+0i ask my self that same question every single day...*hides razor marks*
haha
but seriously, i ment he did "alot", he went down to India and went to the city of "alot" and humped the ground, the trees, the dogs etc. I DO alot everyday too!...the men dont like me there for some reason.....- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1oh my god, did you drop out of jr high?
- sadisticmind, on 05/22/2008, -1/+0elementary dear yellow king, elementary
Alot, India. real place - TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1alot may be a place but it is not a word in the way that you used it above.

- bosssmiley, on 05/22/2008, -0/+9"The Declaration Of Independence isn't all that interesting in and of itself—it's just some old piece of paper that constituted the backbone of American government… Unless, of course, it also happens to include a secret hidden treasure map only visible through Benjamin Franklin's bifocals."
I'd forgotten the sub-Indy tosh that was "National Treasure". Must watch it again this Bank Holiday weekend (drunk, of course. Like Arnie and Vin Diesel movies, all Nic Cage films are better when you're drunk).
Link faved. Good find.- halleyscomet, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5Don't be absurd.
No Nick Cage film after "The Rock" can be redeemed, even by massive amounts of alcohol.- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2who are you kidding? no nick cage film (with the exception of raising arizona) can be redeemed. they're all horrible. he got really lucky being born a relative of copola. have you seen peggy sue got married? worst nick cage acting EVAR. wait...yeh...worst.
- halleyscomet, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1Good point. I wasn't thinking about the other crap he was in.
How's this for a compromise:
"Raising Arizona" is easily the best Nick Cage film ever and the ONLY one that's definitely redeemable. "The Rock" is debatable, (Didn't ask much "acting" from Nick) depending on how much you think Connery being a badass can redeem the flick. It also has the best non "Raising Arizona" Cage line: "How, in the name of Zeus' A**hold did you-" - irresolute, on 05/22/2008, -1/+3Adaptation was amazing, and really hinged on the performance of Nick Cage. Also, Con Air has many redemption qualities, with the aid of alcohol.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2ah, adaptation. how could i have forgotten? oh, because it had nick cage in it...TWICE! i was more focussed on the other part of that story with the orchid and the drugs and the "***** fish" stuff.
the only reason raising arizona was awesome was because it's the coen brothers doing comedy.
- halleyscomet, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1Good point. I wasn't thinking about the other crap he was in.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2who are you kidding? no nick cage film (with the exception of raising arizona) can be redeemed. they're all horrible. he got really lucky being born a relative of copola. have you seen peggy sue got married? worst nick cage acting EVAR. wait...yeh...worst.
- funkyloki, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1I find that Seagal and Van Damme movies are particularly interesting...on weed.
- halleyscomet, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5Don't be absurd.
- BTraina, on 05/22/2008, -1/+7I hate it when they start lists with #1... So not suspenseful.
- soupyc, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Yeah you just wanna say 'You're doing it WRONG!' Me too, friend, me too.
- Dobiewonkenobi, on 05/22/2008, -2/+4Why do they start with one?
- mrinsanity, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1As a digger, I'm obligated to love any list of top anythings, but I especially love lists that have YouTube videos to watch, too!
- BryanG412, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4What about a Light Saber?
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 05/22/2008, -1/+0Lightsaber.
- brjndr, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1They weren't really elusive objects of desire in the films. Luke was just given his by Obi Won.
- Matteos, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1What did Obi win?
- hypnotoad32, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Maybe he means old Ben Kenobi? Kind of a strange old hermit.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1i don't think a lightsaber was ever a desired object. they just existed. like when ben just handed the lightsaber to luke. 'here you go. your dad wanted you to have this.' it wasn't an object that was being searched for. so no. lightsabers don't belong on this list.
- BryanG412, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2well it's elusive to me...and I desire it...
- userperson, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1'recall BB gun comments below'
You'll cut your arm off!
- userperson, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1'recall BB gun comments below'
- VolSurrealist, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1No Conchita from "That Obscure Object of Desire"?
FAIL - iamgreg007, on 05/22/2008, -0/+16They found me. I don't know how but they found me.
RUN FOR IT MARTY!!!!! - BXRWXR, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1The Spinner from Blade Runner.
- dreiman7, on 05/22/2008, -0/+7Rosebud...
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2"It was his sled. It was his sled from when he was a kid. There, I just saved you two long boobless hours."
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -3/+2no, what he's saying is is that rosebud was the object of desire and it was elusive. quoting family guy makes you a big stupid by the way.
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2"It was his sled. It was his sled from when he was a kid. There, I just saved you two long boobless hours."
- dagnabbit, on 05/22/2008, -1/+5Genie's lamp in Aladdin.
I don't need no sports scores to get untold riches. I got Robin Williams. - TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -2/+14that's a retarded list. where's the "Red Ryder BB gun with a compass in the stock" from a christmas story? or "my two dollars" from better off dead? or "Give me a keg of beer" from teen wolf?
every movie has at least one object of desire and because of it's nature (desire) it's elusive. all of these "lists" of crap are lame...how do they keep showing up on the front page?- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1oh, i forgot about the "Glaive". hey, av club, put that in your pipe.
- userperson, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1You'll shoot your eye out!
- wrathchilde, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Whatcha got in the trunk?
Oh... You don't wanna look in there. - penguinofspades, on 05/22/2008, -2/+2is it just me, or was that just a random list of movies and the things they were about? how the hell did this make front page?
- BXRWXR, on 05/22/2008, -0/+4How? Because shut up, that's how.
- DiggzDE, on 05/22/2008, -2/+3Please. We all know that White Castle should be number one. Who else could go on such a crazy adventure for late night munchies other then Harold and Kumar?
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2cheech and chong?
- DiggzDE, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Haha. Too true. But I'm not completely sure picking up a bunch of FBI agents dressed as women could beat riding a cheetah through the forest.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1don't get me wrong...the cheetah scene was pretty funny but white castle seemed like vignettes of scenes going in and out of reality and hallucinations. a majority of white castle is a big "what if".
- DiggzDE, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Haha. Too true. But I'm not completely sure picking up a bunch of FBI agents dressed as women could beat riding a cheetah through the forest.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2cheech and chong?
- GreyColumbus, on 05/22/2008, -2/+0Spoiler?
I love how The Ark Of The Covenant is completely disrespected in The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull. ***** gets like 3 seconds of on screen time. It's like saying, "Hey, remember that golden chesty thing that was pivotal for the first Indy movie? Yeah, ***** that. Here it is in ruins while the bad guys go after a giant magnet. It's fan service, look it up lol."
Spoilers?- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1i don't think the name of the movie is "raiders of the lost ark 2". there's no harm in referencing. lucas and speilberg have been doing that since they started making films and since "crystal skull" is in the indiana jones universe i see no harm in referencing things from the other movies.
- theendcrazyeye, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Numerical List.... YOUR DOING IT WRONG!
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2splitting your list into 2 pages is wrong as well.
- Haoie, on 05/23/2008, -0/+0Too subjective for a numerical list. Or just a list, period.
- V3n0M, on 05/22/2008, -1/+217. $2.00, the Paperboy in "Better Off Dead" (1985)
- Butros, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Heck yeah
- Enceladus, on 05/22/2008, -1/+4This list is missing the Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle
- userperson, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1You'll shoot your eye out!
- KingBabi, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1and a thing that tells time.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1?
- Huangism, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1buried for "top whatever"
- RandomJacks, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1All Johnny wanted was his elusive two dollars in Better Off Dead.
- evo8ftw, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1lets break the record for the top -- lists ever on digg in one day!
- GregLoire, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3The case in "Ronin"?
- utzig, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2#1 for me has to be the Loc-Nar from Heavy Metal. (you know, the green glowing orb thing..)
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2how about miao yin from big trouble in little china?
- Matteos, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3Where is the Continuum Transfunctioner?
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1how about when brad pitt wanted andrew norton to hit him as hard as could? he asked for it a few times so it must have been a desired object.
- via509, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Andrew Norton?
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1edward andrew whatever.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1how about the treasure of one-eyed willie...or saving the goon docks? that's two objects of desire that work towards the same goal in one film!
- wickensworth, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1How about food in "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie"
- retawd, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Am I the only one it was going to list hot actresses?? Yeah yeah, women aren't objects... blah blah blah...
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1yeh look up a couple of posts. miao yin. green eyes. chinese.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1i forgot another female...meg ryan in city of angels. she was the object of desire for nick cage.
- futimazar, on 05/22/2008, -0/+5How about the asian dude who pissed on my rug.
The Big L.- buckbova, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3The chinaman is not the issue . . .
- topace3000, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1The green light??
- Kisama, on 05/22/2008, -1/+2Dugg for Repo Man
- userperson, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1Dude where is "North by Northwest"?
and "Ronin"? Classic examples of the McGuffin.
The key from 'Men in Tights'? - xenex11, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1This article starts off strong with the sports almanac, and then deteriorates into a world of suck. Did no one think to include a light saber (star wars), a flying car (too numerous to list), a robotic servant/girlfriend (see flying car), or even a golden ticket (Charlie and the Chocolate factory)! I Give these guys 10 points for the idea, and 2 points for the execution...
- asiantoast, on 05/22/2008, -0/+0meth in spun? c'mon now....
http://www.brink.com/product/19 - Surefly, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1How in the hell could they choose the almanac over the hoverboard....
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1marty was not on a quest to find a hoverboard.
- mparker7410, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Who starts a list with Number 1? What is my incentive to read on, to find out what item has 15 other items more desirable that it?
- grkgrl88, on 05/24/2008, -0/+0Dugg because Back to the Future is #1 on the list. :)
But I agree that placing it at the top takes away the suspense. I just scrolled through the rest.
