- Lynx34, on 06/07/2009, -4/+35Equilibrium is not very well-known and is criticized (perhaps justly) that it's somewhat unoriginal as far as dystopian post-apocolyptic movies go, but it's a thoroughly enjoyable movie that deserves to be on this list.
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -1/+23yes, children of men. awesome. not really post apocalyptic, but definitely dystopian.
- Ghoztt, on 06/07/2009, -1/+22Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

- bpwrinn, on 06/07/2009, -1/+18ALL CAPS MAKES THE TITLE STAND OUT MORE
- bpwrinn, on 06/07/2009, -1/+18Because animation aside, it sucked.
- Tanktunker, on 06/07/2009, -2/+15Futurama?
- mamboboy, on 06/07/2009, -0/+12So what's it like living under a rock?
- PhillyMJS, on 06/07/2009, -0/+12Dugg for including The Quiet Earth, but buried for not including Threads-- the greatest post-apocalyptic movie of all, IMO. So bleak and terrifyingly realistic, it still makes me shudder.
- TheBigBad, on 06/07/2009, -0/+10Children of Men is a fantastically underrated movie.
- malex, on 06/07/2009, -0/+9Star Trek? 2001? AI? Jetsons: The Movie?
Government oppression is a common theme in speculative fiction, but it isn't mandatory by any stretch. - Bic823, on 06/07/2009, -0/+9this is such a ridiculous comment.
- gl77, on 06/07/2009, -4/+12for all the Pink Floyd fans out there, the soundtrack for "When The Wind Blows" was scored entirely by Roger Waters and about half of it is performed by Waters and his "Bleeding Heart Band"
- decoy26517, on 06/07/2009, -1/+8Back to the Future II?
- aseaman1, on 06/07/2009, -0/+7Luc Besson's "Le Dernier Combat".....?
- halomaker, on 06/07/2009, -1/+8dugg for Wall•e.
- borez, on 06/07/2009, -3/+10Logan's Run.
28 days later.
The last man on earth.
Invasion of the body Snatchers.
etc. - theseaman, on 06/07/2009, -0/+7no le dernier combat?
- 2Pharcyded, on 06/07/2009, -2/+9dugg for akira, 12 monkeys, and escape from ***** new york. kurt russel at his best
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -1/+8Actually that movie signaled the apocalypse of Hollywood and our REAL civilization so it doesn't count.
- nicksource, on 06/07/2009, -0/+7The Postman and Threads are a couple missed off. Although Threads is a docu-drama - it's still really horrifying.
- ekula, on 06/07/2009, -3/+9CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -0/+6The Road Warrior is highly underrated, I think many people get turned off by the title and never actually see it.
- kingfoot, on 06/07/2009, -0/+6dawn of the dead. its first for a reason. lol
- ShadowXOR, on 06/07/2009, -2/+8Not a single person mentioning Stephen King's The Stand? Wow. That book/show/movie was amazing. (The TV series was longer than a movie, so I count it. The book was better but the "movie" wasn't bad.)
- AmyVernon, on 06/07/2009, -1/+7I have a few more films to put on my Netflix list now.
- earthforce1, on 06/07/2009, -0/+6Certainly needs "The day after"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_After
Strinkingly real and I watched it when it first came out. Describes life for a group of average people in and around Kansas City, during the crisis leading up to a US-Soviet nuclear war, and in the weeks afterwards. VERY real, down to earth. I watched it when it first came out, and it scared the crap out of everybody, they were worries about suicides after the film and afterwards they reminded everybody that the world was still here, it hasn't happened. (yet) - CivicTV, on 08/14/2009, -1/+6Ugh Water World, Kevin Costner drinking his own pee was the only highlight of that movie. Poor Dennis Hopper.
- theseaman, on 06/07/2009, -0/+5it's like we're related or something.
- wrzhydr, on 06/07/2009, -0/+5I can't wait for "The Road" to come out. IF it's as good as the book is, it will definitely be the greatest "post-apocalyptic" movie.
- ancalagon73, on 06/07/2009, -4/+9Buried for including Water World on a list of great movies.
- malex, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4It wasn't a great film by any stretch, though of course neither were several of the author's other picks...
- TheCollective00, on 06/07/2009, -1/+5I dugg you because Pink Floyd is my favorite band and Roger Waters rocks :)
- JonTheGoose, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4If Waterworld made the list they can afford to squeeze in tank girl too.
- PhillyMJS, on 06/07/2009, -1/+5The director's cut was better than the theatrical. It fleshes out the characters more, among other things. At the end you find out that Dryland is in fact Mt. Everest (which frankly should have been the assumption of anyone who gave it any thought whatsoever).
It gets aired on SciFi from time to time, I don't know if it's available on DVD. - burningrobot, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4Okay, but Equilibrium isn't a post-apocalypse film, it's just set in an Orwellian-dystopian future.
- Sabretou, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4To be fair though, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is apocalyptic, not post-apocalyptic.
- aseaman1, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4An amazing and similar film that was not on this list is Le Dernier Combat... or The Last Battle. It was the Luc Besson's take on "A Boy and His Dog," "Mad Max," etc...
- Napiertt, on 06/07/2009, -0/+4I think they're limiting it to movies set after after a World War, or some other such cataclysmic event. I'd strike off Red Dawn, CoM and Sunshine from your list. Not sure if Logan's Run qualifies either.
- hushpuppy20, on 06/07/2009, -0/+3I saw this a few years ago and it still scared the crap out of me!
- DivisibleByZero, on 06/07/2009, -0/+3What, no Six String Samurai? No Red Dawn?
- teamgwho, on 06/07/2009, -2/+5this list needs 28 days later. and children of men.
I am Legend, as much as the ending sucked (the writers had no freaking understanding of the source material, none) the visuals were amazing. should've included last man on earth though.
the terminator films (until the most recent one) had nothing to do with post apocalyptic anything. they don't belong.
waterworld may have been a terrible movie, but... it's a really unique take on the end of the world scenario, so I agree it belongs here.
I've seen Logan's Run mentioned a few times. Its more science fiction then post-apocalyptic. I mean... none of the movie takes place on earth... so... i wouldn't include it.
it's not a movie, but the twilight zone episode "time enough at last" is as good as anything on this list. - Heywoodj, on 06/07/2009, -0/+3The ending of "A boy and his dog" had me cackling like a madman. It also bought me a weeks worth of looks of horror and disgust from my wife.
Good times. - folkish, on 06/07/2009, -1/+4Instead they offer Wall-E and the Matrix, I agree with the bury.
- 32bitwonder, on 06/07/2009, -0/+3Dugg for The Quiet Earth - love that movie.
- burningrobot, on 06/07/2009, -0/+3And Logan's Run is about a dystopian future, not the apocalypse.
- Spacejack, on 06/07/2009, -0/+3Just like any other movie of a long book, really. It still plays. And the book has a lot of chaff in it too. Some kind of midpoint between them would be ideal.
The real keys to the long-lived (western) appreciation of the film of Akira are:
A) the animation uses a decent frame rate
B) the music kicks unholy ass and its integration is very tight
C) everyone remembers losing their virginity - Nintendesert, on 06/07/2009, -0/+3I like the inclusion of Omega Man, but why not include The Last Man on Earth in that as well? The Vincent Price version is amazing.
- gl77, on 06/07/2009, -3/+6ummm okay someone buried my comment for no good reason. if you're going to bury it, dont be a coward and at least tell me why you're doing it.
