- CoreyTamas, on 12/07/2008, -4/+40These guys need a crash course in the difference between "remake" and "sequel".
Is there anyone out there other than them who don't understand the difference? - AmyVernon, on 12/07/2008, -3/+29Dune, again? The miniseries was really good. Let it lie. It works better as a miniseries, the book is so dense.
- ZZOTH, on 12/07/2008, -0/+221. robocop
2.terminator (sequel not a remake) shouldn't be on the list. so 12 remakes?
3.when worlds collide
4.ghost busters (another sequel) so 11 remakes?
5.logan's run
6.flash gordon
7.creature from the black lagoon
8.westworld
9.frankenstein
10.Fahrenheit 451
11.forbidden planet
12.the illustrated man
13.dune
guess they forgot about TRON. it's in production already...
i hate when they don't put them all on ONE page. hope this helps my lazy friends. - BeShirtHappy, on 12/07/2008, -2/+23Do not ruin a good thing... leave them alone and come up with some original ideas.
- AussieCynic, on 12/07/2008, -5/+25no no somethings should be left alone... look at what theydid to the War of the Worlds... murdered it... run for the hills.... leave logans run alone, its a brave new world..... arghhhh
- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -3/+21Hollywood is lame of late. They have no imagination left and can only steal old ideas and try to make them their own through the use of modern special effects. It's all crap.
- adventchild08, on 12/07/2008, -5/+17Where the hell is Star Trek?
- standxstrongx, on 12/07/2008, -1/+11They had to make it a slideshow? Really?
- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -2/+12I have to admit I'm looking forward to The Day the Earth Stood Still, but I still going to bet the original is better.
Hollywood:
A) Not every movie needs to be an action flick
B) We have brains, please, some intellectual content
C) Social commentary is great, but you need not be so damn heavy handed
D) Please, think about deeper concepts and allow us to enjoy them. If you decide to make Ender's Game, understand it's not Harry Potter in space, it has a LOT of deep subtext that many will understand if you actually make it well. - T8erT0T, on 12/07/2008, -2/+11Leave the Robocop franchise alone. In a few more years, Detroit will eventually become that place and then it'll prophetic.
- mrhedges, on 12/07/2008, -0/+9Dune (the movie) was hardly a sci-fi classic, and I doubt a new movie should be considered remake of the original. That's like saying Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy is a remake of Ralph Bakshi's cartoon.
- disraeligears54, on 12/07/2008, -2/+10Hopefully the "Christian Bale Effect" will happen with The Terminator: Salvation, or else the world as we know it will fall to shambles.
- Billions, on 12/07/2008, -0/+8I wish the David Lynch version could have been the length of the miniseries - the feel of Lynch's film really captures Herbert's complex subtle character motivations with the "internal thoughts" voiceovers and I think a 6 hour version with the superb cast and writing (excepting, of course, the strange and remedial plot solution to the 'weirding way") would be something amazing. The mood and effects are superior and the costumes are perfect - the stillsuits look functional and even the odd geometric shields are cool in their own alternative way.
I'm still waiting on an BluRay of the Lynch version. It's only gotten weirder and better with age. - Bloodwine, on 12/07/2008, -1/+9Robocop: I don't think the current Hollywood has the chops to make a dark movie like the original Robocop. Hollywood is in love with PG-13 these days.
Terminator: As long as they stick to their plans of having it a separate part of the storyline in the future with the war with robots, it stands a chance. You cannot remake the original Terminator, though. Not as long as Arnold is still breathing.
Ghostbusters: The next generation? Really? Please god no.
Flash Gordon: I think Hollywood fails to understand that directors in the 1980's knew the right amount of cheese to put in a film. So many awesome yet cheesy 80's films that simply can't be remade.
Dune: Let it rest, please. I think most Dune fans were satisfied with the SciFi mini-series.
Some of the other classics on that list are harder to tell, because they are older and are more suitable for remakes. However, the current Hollywood makes me cringe. - OneLess, on 12/07/2008, -1/+8They're classics because they're good! How about Hollywood spends time remaking ***** movies instead of ruining good ones?
- Sornos, on 12/07/2008, -1/+7The miniseries didn't really do it for me. I don't think there really has been a good film adaption of it yet. I don't know enough about the new one to think how it will do, but it is Hollywood. My hopes are not high.
- exspasticcomics, on 12/07/2008, -0/+6thought the mini series was alright- & honestly.. really like David Lynch's version of it too. in short- I just don't see the point/need to do all these remakes. i want new films.
- SilentRamble42, on 12/07/2008, -1/+6Boooooooo!
- digidevil, on 12/07/2008, -0/+5And on top of this crap they're making Neuromancer into a film coming out next year. Starring Hayden Christensen. They haven't figured out yet that his acting skills are better off behind the counter at The Gap than on an actual screen. Totally disappointing but then Hollywood has a way of right screwing up sci-fi in general, especially recently. Every one of these will be f'ing terrible, and so will Neuromancer.
- s043446583, on 12/07/2008, -0/+5Why are they making remakes of old Sci-Fi movies when there is plenty of sci-fi books that haven't been put to the big screen yet.
(ie. Ringworld, The Mote in God's Eye, A Fire Upon The Deep, The Foundation series etc.) - Bloodwine, on 12/07/2008, -0/+5I think it's different if you rob an idea and put a different spin on it and make it your own.
Alien wasn't the first monster-in-space movie. Conan wasn't the first mystical action adventure movie. Back to the Future wasn't the first time travel movie. Rocky wasn't the first boxing movie.
It's just that Hollywood is getting too lazy and risk averse that they are just rehashing existing specific stories, rather than trying to take a general concept and put a new spin on it. - groo68, on 12/07/2008, -0/+5An original sci fi with the same production value as star wars would do really good, and introduce a whole new cultural aspect to our society. they need to do one.
- nascentia, on 12/07/2008, -1/+6Of these, there are 3 I'm actually pretty excited about - Aronofsky taking on Robocop seems like the best kind of "WTF?" genius fit; Frank Darabont has proven time and again that he's excellent at making adaptations of books - Shawshank is one of the best movies ever, IMO, and I LOVED The Mist, so I'm looking forward to it; and Peter Berg is pretty cool in my book. Hancock sucked, but I really enjoyed The Kingdom, and I'd love to see Dune done right, if possible.
I'm also mildly excited about T4, but mostly because of Christian Bale. I'm hopeful that he got involved because it's an awesome script, and because I think he's PERFECT as an older John Conner. And seeing 'the War' will be cool as hell. - giveer, on 12/07/2008, -0/+5You mean the prequel that's not a remake?
http://www.startrekmovie.com/ - bluekangaroo, on 12/07/2008, -0/+4Add Tom Cruise to any one of those pics if you want it to be a piece of crap.
- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -0/+4Dune has always been a classic among my circle of friends.
- newman8r, on 12/07/2008, -3/+7they're all going to be terrible.
- unknownpoltroon, on 12/07/2008, -0/+4Logans run? Maybe, but only if the female lead wears that green toga thing Jenny Agutter was wearing.
- giveer, on 12/07/2008, -0/+3AHEM:
"They Live"
No, really.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_displa ... - Slique22, on 12/07/2008, -0/+3The Ghostbusters videogame currently in development IS Ghostbusters 3, as Hollywood refuses to make it.
- TechnoRabbit, on 12/07/2008, -1/+4I challenge you to come up with one new story that isn't robbing something from some other story. Try it.
- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -0/+3It's not an amazing movie, but I wouldn't call it a bad movie.
- Syric, on 12/07/2008, -0/+3I'm mildly optimistic about Day the Earth Stood Still. I never saw the original, but this new one looks good and I think Keanu Reeves may have found his niche in playing an Alien.
And Darren Aronofsky directing Robocop? Win.
I would actually like to see Logan's Run remade. I didn't think the original was as good as it could have been honestly. Same with Dune. - acknotSW, on 12/07/2008, -0/+3A) Action flicks will always bring in a certain number of viewers, must put lots of action into every movie
B) Too risky, some people might not get it. Better to follow the newspaper strategy and keep it at a 5th grade level
C) (directors thinking) NO NO NO, I have an agenda and it will be in this movie. Nobody understands this issue like I do and I can finally get the world behind it. I don’t care if it makes the movie absolute crap, the issue is more important.
D) See B)
I agree with you, I just don't think we are going to see anything new as far as a science fiction movie goes for a few years. It's safer to use existing intellectual property then it is to take a risk on a new idea, sad but true. - p51d007, on 12/07/2008, -0/+3Once again proving my point that Hollywood hasn't had an ORIGINAL idea in decades!
- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2Watch the original, you won't regret it.
- ibeetle, on 12/07/2008, -1/+3@ NickCobb
You hit the nail on the head.
Lord of the Rings
Harry Potter
Wall•E
Iron Man
and especially that turd, and completely unoriginal Dark Knight. Jesus! Like we needed another dumb ass Batman movie.
The Chronicles of Narnia? Who thought of that *****?
All those movies were based on earlier ideas or were from other sources and/or completely unoriginal and each and every one of them crap.
Now, there have been some original ideas to come out of Hollywood. Movies like Space Chips and Fred Claus. Now those are the future cinematic classics. Not these bone headed remakes and endless sequels like Hellboy II.
/s (it is sad I actually had to put this symbol) - acknotSW, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2You know what we really need? A gritty hard core movie adaptation of Cleopatra 2525.
No, I'm not serious, but what are they going to do when they run out of good movies to remake? - stoikiometry, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2I see which 13 movies (or most of them) I'll be watching this Christmas. I'm glad Strangelove isn't on that list. If Hollywood is looking for some crap to make they should try Passion of the Christ 2: Crucify This. I might watch that.
- supersonicjim, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2More ads, yo!
- spookyttws, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2As much as I generally dislike most book to movie adaptions I will say I truly loved both book and movie versions of Fight Cub (and Palahniuk's work in general) and I have extremely high hopes for The Curious Tale of Benjamin Button.
- rancor01, on 12/07/2008, -1/+3Part of the appeal of these movies were that they were made on a shoestring budget with untested actors/actresses and were the vision of one wo/man.. And this exactly is what we enjoy.. Hollywood will throw an average of 190 million at each of these films with mind-stunting CGI, written and screen-tested by committees and dumbed down for the everyman... I am not looking forward to these one bit.
..At least the older movies gave the audience a small credit for intelligence.
/rant - Billions, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2Honestly, I prefer the Bakshi version, and Lynch's Dune is phenomenal!
- DryCat, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2Just checking to make sure Blade Runner isn't on the list...
and it's clean. Good. - Trecherus, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2Brian Blessed must be cast in any Flash Gordon remake.
- abadonn, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2It will be truly sad if they release a Hollywood dumbed down 451. Bradbury would turn over in his grave.
- farsonic, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2I think you need to be dead to roll in your grave?
- Perleeeze, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2For the love of God someone stop them.
A remake of Fahrenheit 451?? That can only result in disaster.
a) There isn't a current director that has a teenth the ability of Francois Truffaut (who was at the height of his powers when he made the original)
b) There isn't an actress who can touch Julie Christie
c) The European aesthetic of the original fits the mood of the book perfectly. Hollywood producers just can't do Eurpoean.
Some of the list could do with a rework, but please stop them from touching the following classics:
11.forbidden planet
12.the illustrated man
13.dune - inactive, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2Or at least someone who isn't as well known as Hanks, Cruise, etc. I do agree that McAvoy would be great though!
- opticwind, on 12/07/2008, -0/+2I'd love a well-done remake of the Illustrated Man.
