- hollywoodphony, on 08/04/2008, -1/+33My favorite 80's tape is this "Topless Aerobics" video I stole from my friend's dad when I was a kid.
- hexydes, on 08/04/2008, -2/+31Back to the Future?! =O
- KMye, on 08/04/2008, -5/+32I like how this is just a ***** list of well-known 80's movies, but the author tries to make it seem novel by linking the whole thing to VHS.
- sonar1, on 08/04/2008, -2/+20how about "The Gods Must Be Crazy"
- terajoule, on 08/04/2008, -0/+18Movies seemed so much cooler in the '80s.
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -2/+18The Princess Bride needs to be on the list.
- hexydes, on 08/04/2008, -2/+18Because it's the 00's? Back when it was the 90's, the 70's were in.
See how this works? - Haoie, on 08/04/2008, -4/+19Betamax [for the few who remember it] actually was a contender for a good while.
But in the end, VHS was the clear winner. - dromni, on 08/04/2008, -1/+15Because people who were children and teens in the 80s now are adults with money, and out of nostalgia they will buy products resembling their golden years.
- obsolite, on 08/04/2008, -2/+13:*-( hddvd i miss you already...
- thestranger, on 08/04/2008, -0/+9Could also be called....
13 most shown movies on Fox at 2 in the afternoon on Saturday of the 90s. - MondoPest, on 08/04/2008, -4/+13Well sure, even though Betamax was actually better quality VHS definitely captured the hearts and wallets of the people.
- OutAndAbout, on 08/04/2008, -1/+10What is SARCASM?
/vhs - mtschmie, on 08/04/2008, -1/+10Because someone submitted it and then other people dugg it. See... that's how things work here.
- JAGUART, on 08/04/2008, -0/+9Growing up in the 80's I can tell you that Footloose and Amadeus were pretty huge..Also, anything with Chevy Chase, Steve Martin and John Candy. And let's not forget the "Brat Pack".
A personal popular favorite for me was Star Trek the Wrath of Kahn (1982).. - h4k0r, on 08/04/2008, -0/+8Screw Elm St and Rain Man.....
What about Ghostbusters!! - shutaro, on 08/04/2008, -2/+9Porn killed Beta.

First Blood - readacook, on 08/04/2008, -2/+9Were the best parts already fuzzy from the constant pausing and rewinding?
...my bad. - VigRoco, on 08/04/2008, -1/+8Because GI JOE is coming...
- Midnightrambler, on 08/04/2008, -0/+7This brought back memories, First Blood was the first movie we watched when my parents brought home our first VCR.
- twertyto, on 08/04/2008, -0/+6Generational effect. It goes something like this. When a person is young their formative years fall into some decade which ends up having a large impact on the kind of person they become later (i.e. music taste, art, movies and so on). For me the 80s happened from age 3 to 13. Then when people get older (say hit there 30s) nostaglia kicks in and people attempt to revisit aspect of childhood to relive certain pleasant memories of the past. Cycles repeat every generation. 70s were big last decade and 60s were big in the 80s.
Just my opinion. - speedk0re, on 08/04/2008, -0/+6no, tango & cash is made of FAIL. Why not throw overboard on there too?
- sandaboy, on 08/04/2008, -3/+8No "Top Gun"!?
- cawpin, on 08/04/2008, -1/+6Haoie - I do remember it and it was the better format. Smaller size and higher quality. I had one in my room when I was a kid.
- borez, on 08/04/2008, -1/+6Most popular usually meant least watchable ( because of wear ) in VHS terms
- ShooterMcGavin, on 08/04/2008, -1/+6I don't know about anyone else, but when I was a kid, I think I rented "Rad" about 87 different times.
- kitsua, on 08/04/2008, -0/+4Exactly.
- skunks, on 08/04/2008, -2/+6Man, that's an ugly website.
- Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4No Goonies?
- dekuscrub, on 08/04/2008, -0/+4I thought I once read that Crocodile Dundee was THE most rented VHS movie of all time. Was I just imagining that?
- aadsm, on 08/04/2008, -0/+4No "The Neverending Story"?
- inactive, on 08/04/2008, -2/+6Seriously. Buried for no Back to the Future.
- naughtyboy, on 08/04/2008, -0/+4My most memorable VHS moment can be expressed in two words. ~ Toxic Avenger ~
None equal, none below.
http://www.filmsamling.se/instick/ToxicAvenger.jpg - satelliteshow, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3I'd say a good number of your list became classics more because of cable than home video. I seem to recall a good number of years where WarGames, Caddyshack, Revenge of the Nerds (1 and 2), Commando, and the Goonies were in constant rotation between pay channels and WTBS. I remember WarGames, particularly, being a weekly occurrence because of local sunday afternoon programing.
- antdude, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3So who still uses a VCR? ;) I do for recoridng and playing back.
- barnyard, on 08/04/2008, -0/+3Any list without "Rad", the 1986 BMX movie starring Bart Connor is clearly missing some classics.
- OutAndAbout, on 08/04/2008, -1/+4C'mon now. Those are all gimmes that sat on the new releases shelf for years at a time.
You even had to preface Police Academy with the fact that it was a box office hit.
How bout all the movies that owe their lasting success solely to the video store (and their cool covers). Like Faces of Death and Toxic Avenger. I'm sure we could list a dozen more with ease... - cardyology, on 08/04/2008, -2/+5No Elm St? No Street Trash?!?
- Awspire, on 08/04/2008, -2/+5Please be kind and rewind.
- kajoob, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3You mean in 2 more years we have to relive the 90's again??
*blows brains out* - Myztry, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2The good old days. Back when movies were valued enough to put them on a media with a protected surface.
I miss having the odd bit of slight static instead of rental discs that refuse to play from minor damage.
I suppose non-protected discs are cheaper to churn out. Not that that reduces the price or anything. - blacktriangle, on 08/04/2008, -1/+3What? No Total Recall?
- BradBrown, on 08/04/2008, -1/+3I wouldn't go that far.
- illustrick, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2No Summer Rental? wtf? john candy for the win
- bennyb123, on 08/04/2008, -0/+2No Rain Man?
Ya definitely lights out at 11. Im a great driver. - inactive, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3lol...
Laser Disk is an example of that lesson that I was always being taught but never listened until I grew older.... Never be an early adopter. You'll end up like the people who bought LaserDisk or Sega Saturn. - nuclearpenguins, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2Hollywood hadn't developed a bad case of sequelitus yet.
