- srick77, on 08/07/2008, -29/+239It's so fashionable to hate on the Prequels... it's nice to see someone take a stand and call out some of the GOOD things Uncle George did with 'em!
- poploserdigg, on 08/08/2008, -12/+104Reasons to Hate the Prequels:
12. Horrible waste of Natalie Portman. - Baku, on 08/07/2008, -16/+82I'm not a fan of the prequels, but I'm impressed that he found 11 positive things to say about them - that alone gets the digg in my book! ;)
- Shogi, on 08/08/2008, -3/+67Dugg for Ewan McGregor and Darth Maul
- nytejade, on 08/08/2008, -2/+61I'm surprised he puts the fight sequence from Revenge of the Sith in here, and not the fight at the end of Phantom Menace. Much more emotional, suspenseful, and better choreographed.
- solecize, on 08/08/2008, -6/+61The use of the word younglings makes me laugh so hard that I found a scene with potentially disturbing and frightful imagery silly and undramatic. All Lucas had to do was call the younglings children and it would have made the entire scene, and movie better.
- nevadajames, on 08/08/2008, -3/+53Ewan McGregor was a great Obi-Wan, maybe one of the few good things about the prequels.
- YME1280, on 08/07/2008, -6/+54Why isn't Jar Jar Binks on that list? (Kills Self)
- jaxomlotus, on 08/08/2008, -8/+51I loved them for the sheer escapism of them. I didn't get too hung up on plot stupidity, bad acting or overdone CGI. It was just a fun 6 hours to sit though.
- ncc74656m, on 08/08/2008, -2/+42"General Kenobi, years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars..."
Dugg. - empressofmetal, on 08/07/2008, -3/+40I think I feel better now too! There were a lot of aspects about these Prequels that disappointed me, but I have to admit that there were some good things like getting to see the original Republic at work and the younger days of Obi-Wan and seeing Darth Maul in action (he was so bad ass!).
- Marlon, on 08/08/2008, -4/+40the writing and Hayden were bad, everything else was ok
- Slayve, on 08/07/2008, -6/+38It is nice to see some good things said about the prequels. I'm as much of a hater as anyone, but I still want to like the prequels because the original trilogy meant so much to me as a kid.
- punkcat, on 08/08/2008, -1/+32in same paragraph "you get those same cringe moments that we got when we saw Porkins and Biggs die in the Battle of Yavin."
who the ***** cringed when Porkins died? i think i laughed when i found out the fat guy was called Porkins.
obviously from this, the writer has gone off the deep end of star wars fanism. - tallassrob, on 08/08/2008, -3/+27There are plenty of reasons to dislike the prequels, I think this guy mentioned that he'd be writing an article listing his reasons to hate them, but I'm sure you can find other critical analysis' of it on the web.
Some of my reasons for hating them are: metachlorians (the force didn't need a biological explanation), jarjar binks ('nuff said), awful awful dialogue ("I don't like sand..."), padme naming her kids (kinda ruins the realization they're bro & sis in the original trilogy), odd and unnecessary cameo's (Yoda meeting Chewbacca, what was the point of that?)... I could go on and on with this list, but I'll leave it at that. - hemantjha, on 08/08/2008, -7/+31the movies were fun on their own, but lacking as part of the star wars universe.
- BooLag, on 04/23/2009, -0/+23like this:
http://i34.tinypic.com/2ij223r.jpg - Smokeydabear, on 08/08/2008, -3/+26I liked that they went to the Wookie planet. I've always had this fantasy about that place since I was a kid and started watching Star Wars.
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 08/08/2008, -6/+29One of the most complete and well thought out reads I have ever come across here on Digg. Total props to the author, especially for going against the norm of "let's bash the prequels!" The prequels, if they had come before the sequels, would have had the same lasting effect that the sequels did.
They are great movies. Incredible movies. The fight and battle scenes are classic. Ewan McGregor is incredibly underrated as Obi-Wan. Add in the always amazing Liam Neeson, a terrifyingly 20-30 year younger Yoda, and Samuel Badass L. Jackson and you really cannot top these films.
As a trilogy, they are great. The problem is that they don't have the power and the sense of mystery that the sequels had. We know exactly what will happen. The Jedi lose. Anakin goes bad. Padme dies. The Emperor wins. If we hadn't known of these things before watching the prequels, we'd be begging Lucas for more.
There is really only one part of these movies that I could actually get angry at Lucas over - Freaking Jar Jar Binks. - Swellin, on 08/08/2008, -6/+28Can someone tell me why everyone hates the prequels. I liked them all very much and dont really understand what was so terriable with them, anytime i get to watch some light saber moments im happy, maybe that blinded me ?
- dekuscrub, on 08/08/2008, -3/+25I really thought Darth Maul was lame. Paper-thin character! No depth at all. "At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge." Revenge for what? Nothing is explained. We have no reason to hate this guy, other than the fact that he looks like the devil himself.
When Vader was revealed in ANH, he was a badass. Choking guys left and right (even his own men). He didn't necessarily look evil, but through his actions, his character was built. With Darth Maul we have none of that. They just took the lazy way out and painted his face with red and black stripes and called it good. - bosssmiley, on 08/08/2008, -28/+49I just read 11 reasons why the person's judgement about movies is not to be trusted.
From the article: 7. The Opening Sequence of Revenge of the Sith
A lot of people give Michael Bay a lot of props for pulling off the big scenes unlike any other. To be honest, the opening sequence of Revenge of the Sith definitely ranks among some of the “biggest” scenes I’ve ever had the privilege of watching. From the moment that Obi-Wan and Anakin’s fighters fly over the Venator-class Star Destroyer and into the massive pitched battle, until the moment that Anakin “lands” half of the Invisible Hand, it’s non-stop awesome.Star Wars Space BattleWe’re treated to another one of those “Oh, I have a bad feeling about this” quotes that Star Wars is famous for. We get to see some awesome R2-D2 stuff, which I just can’t get enough of, and Obi-Wan’s “We’re still flying half a ship” is just a classic line I will remember till the day I die.
That's odd. I remember the same sequence as a tale of sound and fury (and cartoony CG) signifying nothing. No tension, no drama, no sense of character. Contrast that sequence with the opening scenes of the original "Star Wars"; see the difference? - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -6/+27The author made some good points, but #5 was way off base. The planets were nice, yes, but the technology looked like a shameless plug for future toy releases. One of the things that made the original trilogy such visual genius was the beat-up, lived-in feel of the universe. The Falcon was a lovingly-crafted scrap heap; the landspeeders were as dinged and dirty as any redneck's trusty pickup; the X-Wings had scorch marks along the body; and so on. CGI is a powerful tool when used wisely and sparingly, but in the prequels it just served to make every vehicle look like a just-out-of-the-box plastic toy, which really broke down what was left of the fourth wall.
- LogicBomB, on 08/08/2008, -4/+25The reason the prequils sucked is twofold:
1. No grit or dirt, no living world - everything was polished. In 4-6 everything was real - it had texture, you felt like you could touch it. Sure some things were a little cheesy but almost everything was a physical object. In the prequils, there was like, what, 8 minutes of non-CGI?
2. Scenes that make you go "what the *****?" - things should not be done in a prequil that was never hinted at being possible in the origonals. R2 flies around, yoda jumps around like a maniac, "the force" is quantified and measured with tools instead of simply being a controllable energy. There's just too much that happens in the prequils that doesn't happen in the origonals. You watch the origonals and go "but if they could do *this* before, why not now?" - Radan, on 08/08/2008, -0/+21Wait, you are claiming Star Wars doesn't obey the rules of science? Preposterous! What's next? Pigs can't fly?
- 0U8I2, on 08/07/2008, -6/+26I was definitely unhappy with the Prequels, but I think this article just cheered me up! Very good points made.
- engrishGamer, on 08/08/2008, -1/+19I'm surprised the list didn't include light saber fights because they were MANY TIMES better in the prequels than they were in the older movies. The acrobatics, speed and intensity of the fight was just much better.
- Vejadu, on 08/08/2008, -0/+16I fully agree and would add the lightsaber duels to this list. The prequels are loaded with amazing lightsaber battles: Qui-Gon Jin & Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul, Yoda vs. Count Dooku, Mace Windu vs. Palpatine, the Jedi army vs. the Droid army, Anakin vs. Obi-Wan.
- mywhitenoise, on 08/08/2008, -6/+22Did you read the article? The guys a total dork. He said Yodas eyes were "spine chilling", that some of the opening lines for Revenge Of The Sith will follow him to his death. Come on, nothing from these movies are that great.
- fredrockbluff, on 08/08/2008, -9/+24maybe its my lack of fanboyism, but I actually enjoyed these movies for the most part. Acting and cinematography were above average. Sure they threw in a few dumb characters and scenes to appeal to a wider audience, but with such high-budget films you have to do stuff like that if you want to make any money back.
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -5/+20Totally agree . . . people always want to bag the crap out anything and everyone. Great article.
- rkthoadan, on 08/08/2008, -1/+16My favorite comment about the opening of Revenge is that it was so much like a video game you keep looking for the Power-ups.
- lokee73, on 08/08/2008, -1/+16I would agree with you, but Lucas kept cutting away from the fight we had all been waiting 20 years to see...so he could show some punk-ass little kid in a space ship?! Talk about a momentum killer. What the hell was he thinking?
- BooLag, on 04/23/2009, -2/+16Blinded by the awesome side of the films, you were!
- tallassrob, on 08/08/2008, -0/+13You have fantasies about Wookiees?
- Smokeydabear, on 08/08/2008, -1/+14Yes, see above. A fantasy doesn't always have to be of the sexual nature my good sir, although in this case it is.
- empressofmetal, on 08/08/2008, -1/+14You make a really good point, and I felt the same way when I first saw the prequels. But, when you think about it, the technology was worse for the REBELS because they had to scrape together what they could to fight the Empire. In the prequels, we are basically seeing the glory days of technology, before people were forced to live under a dictatorship. Also, for the original movies, Lucas DID have the toys in mind. He wasn't sure that the original Star Wars would be a success, so he was banking on making his money on the merchandise -- Lucas has said this many times.
- marcusbrutus, on 08/08/2008, -1/+13It is fought in the upper atmosphere. So there would be wind. I can't believe I just defended that scene. /shame
- Calinthalus, on 08/08/2008, -0/+12"General Kenobi, years ago you severed my father in the Clone Wars..."
Fixed it. - baltar2008, on 08/08/2008, -12/+24Obi Wan is the *only* thing I can agree to in that list. All three of the movies blow, ROTS included.
- dstz, on 08/08/2008, -1/+13"It's so fashionable to hate on the Prequels"
Or, maybe those are just not very good movies. It's so fashionable to discount people's opinion as 'fashion' btw. - exhume, on 08/08/2008, -0/+12There was no tension because everyone knew that Anakin and Obi-Wan weren't going to be killed in the battle. That was a big issue with all of the prequels...we knew for the most part what happened to all the major characters.
In the original SW movies you didn't know if Luke, Leia or Han were going to survive, thus the tension. - brutalentropy, on 08/08/2008, -2/+13I can't believe I'm about to defend this, but here goes. (Let me first state that I am not a huge fan of the prequels)
The prequels show a civilization at the beginning of its decline. By the time we get to A New Hope, there is an active rebellion and an Empire that has a stranglehold on pretty much all of the known universe. Given limited resources on the side of the Rebellion, and the decadence and villainy of the Empire, I wonder how much of the pristine CGI in the prequels is intentional. I think it is, at least partly, intended to show a civilization seemingly at its peak (while it is in fact standing on a ledge).
Just my $.02. - tallassrob, on 08/08/2008, -1/+12I hated that scene too.. way too much CGI and those droids latching onto the ship were dumbtarded.
- Greyscale88, on 08/08/2008, -4/+14It's really too bad about the prequals. If it wasn't for the god awful dialogue("FOR DEMOCRACY!", "NOOOOOO") and the hilariously bad performance of Hayden Christensen they wouldn't be so bad at all.
- petethepanda, on 08/08/2008, -3/+13Anybody else think the Yoda fight in Ep2 should have been more "aging but painfully badass Jedi slowly pushes the bad guy back" instead of "Bugs Bunny"?
I disagree with him on the opening of Ep3. On a technical level it was stunning, but I found it boring. Instead of focusing on the characters they try to have the scope so big it's hard to care. Also I can't believe that guy actually LIKES Obi-Wan's "Oh, I have a bad feeling about this" line, it's one of the most cringe-worthy of the series. - bdbr, on 08/08/2008, -0/+10One of my favorite scene of all the prequels was an out-take; McGregor was doing the final action scene in Ep 1 (the fight with Darth Maul), and he does some crazy ***** then leaps off a platform into a giant mattress (which was off-camera for the scene, of course).
They yell "cut", and he jumps up grinning and yells, "'Do I want to be in Star Wars', they ask me! ***** yeah!" - tallassrob, on 08/08/2008, -0/+10Hayden was awful, but he might've been better if someone took the writers pen away from Lucas.
- buba1243, on 08/08/2008, -0/+10Oh great a bear with wookie fantasy.
