- furburglar, on 11/05/2009, -0/+32Watership Down isn't unintentionally creepy. It's quite intentionally scary.
Terrified me when I first saw it. Note to parents: probably not a good movie to rent for 5 yr olds' birthday parties. - EatingPie, on 11/05/2009, -0/+25Hmm... I'd say only half of these are creepy.
Watership Down comes from an age when people assumed animation was always for kids, but this movie wasn't. It was for adults. It was intentional in its "creepiness" (wrong word, really), since it was made for adults -- or later teens.
Lion King - Mufasa's Death was horrifying, indeed. But it was WELL DONE, so it doesn't at all deserve to be called "creepy." Killing him on screen created very deep emotional subtext for the film -- something Disney doesn't usually do -- and probably one of the biggest reasons it was the pinnacle of Disney's 2nd Renaissance.
The Hobbit was scary in parts, but intentionally so. It was a very faithful rendering of the book, though far too abbreviated. (I wonder, did the author see Gollum in the LOTR *movies*??)
Animal Farm was by Orwell. For kids? Not at all, book or cartoon.
The Sourcerer's Apprentice isn't creepy, and is actually the actual story the music "tells." Disney didn't try to change it too much... a mistake they DID make with Hunchback... a book where death reigns strong for our main characters, but somehow they walk away unscathed in the movie. (Bad Idea written all over it.)
Pinoccio, I did not like. But here's an important point. Many times, fairy tales were very, very scary -- Pinoccio included. Disney being accurate to this is a *good* thing. And I say this as one who didn't like the story.
NOTE TO AUTHOR: Learn a bit more about adult-oriented animated films. Learn more about Fairy Tales. And don't be afraid to be emotional when Mufasa dies!
-Pie - internetisscary, on 11/04/2009, -1/+17Pinocchio's growing nose = A metaphor. The more you lie, the more sex you have. Am I reading too far into this?
- angrytortilla, on 11/05/2009, -0/+13I would say most of the "darkness" or creepiness from these movies were intentional. With the exception of Polar Express, which was rendered creepy by the eyes... those horrible horrible "real" eyes.
- pwarnock, on 11/05/2009, -0/+8Disney movies are surprisingly dark.
- Nwsamurai, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6Secret of Nimh, anyone?
- AngryDeuce, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6Yeah, I saw that on HBO when I was real young, it was early, no one else was awake, I'm thinking "cartoon, alright!" and then bunny's start getting mauled and *****...
Scary flick. I've been meaning to read the book for years now... - Nwsamurai, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Dugg for being well written and thorough.... but mostly for Lion King.
One of the best movies Disney has ever done, and I would not describe any part of it as "Creepy". - bradleyland, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3As a child, I had a recurring nightmare that involved blood thirsty rabbits.
I'm 100% certain that Watership Down was intentionally creepy. - FearlessFreep, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3"Uncanny Valley" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley
- sirbeta, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3I'm going to have to see watership down...
- AngryDeuce, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Yeah, I remember being creeped out quite a bit by that movie, too. Particularly when Ms. Bisbee (Frisbee? Whatever her names was) goes to see the rats for the first time and it's just glowing eyes and deep scary ass voice...
Scary ***** to a 6 year old... - Rammat2, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3That Watership Down makes a Pikachu fight look like nothing. Who ever thought bunnies could be so creepy? The MM music just greatly adds to it, also.
- psykiv, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Did anyone else thing this was a cracked.com article when they read the title?
- Hardataq, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2When I was a child I was convinced that Fantasia was a horror movie.
- FearlessFreep, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Buried - most of these hit the mark they were trying for, so 'unintentional' can only be meant if you start with an assumption that all animated films should be kids fare and that anything else was an accident. Also, most had elements that may be classified as 'scary' but I don't think 'creepy' really applies to most
- squ1sh, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Secret of Nimh -> The Great Owl. Jeez..... that owl could have given anyone nightmares.
Dumbo -> Pink Elephant sequence! - guanyin, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Bigwig was my hero. I was Fiver.
- uncoolcentral, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2How is Animal Farm unintentionally creepy? Isn't that the whole point? What would it be if it weren't creepy? (something else!)
- bdbr, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2The novel itself is pretty violent, and the movie is just true to the book. I'd go so far as to say it really isn't a children's book.
- jeremiahjw, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Animal Farm was depressing.
- askantik, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1This is supposed to be most widely seen Norwegian film of all time-- but it's ***** weird. Like sort of cute in a kiddy way but also weird.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fl%C3%A5klypa_Grand_P ... - mattmartinez, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Definitely the most disturbing movie of my childhood. I'm pretty sure it gave me nightmares for a while.
- jts10, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Tinkerbell trying to kill Wendy more than once, is just Tink being silly ole Tink.
it's all good - lukas88, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1This one is more creepy than all of those combined:

One shall fall - TheCollective00, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1You know what other obscure animated movie was very creepy? The Mouse and His Child. I'll never forget the scene where they go to the bottom of the ocean and that label on that can zooms in to reveal the same label inside of it, then another one after that, over and over again. That image is engrained in my childhood mind forever.

the scene I'm talking about starts at about 52:40 - newerakb, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Wow, haven't thought about Dot and the Kangaroo in years. My sister and I watched Dot and the Whale a lot...Dot and all these kids try and rescue a beached whale and it's creepy and depressing.
