- Sangreal2007, on 12/29/2008, -0/+54after seeing valkyrie, i had the distinct feeling that some of the audience didn't like the movie because they expected a different ending. o_O
- thewdog, on 12/30/2008, -1/+40dugg for Patton Oswalt
- DeviantDragon, on 12/30/2008, -0/+30SPOILER ALERT
He comes back in the sequel. - m3mn0n, on 12/30/2008, -0/+30King Kong dies in the end.
- Jeepy, on 12/30/2008, -5/+32Summation of star wars prequel a la Patton Oswalt.
"Do you like Angelina Jolie? Does she give you a big boner? Well here's Jon Voight's ballsack!" - bagboyrebel, on 12/30/2008, -1/+27Wait, I thought Darth Maul was one of the things we were allowed to like, why does the article complain about him?
- thegamingguy, on 12/30/2008, -0/+24The inclusion of the Star Wars flicks was pretty brilliant.
- stinkummm, on 12/30/2008, -2/+24Observer A is dead?
- plr4ever, on 12/30/2008, -0/+19Honest to god, this redneck told his wife that the movie should have ended another way. Im sorry, but how can u be disappointed in the ending?
- bobertb, on 12/30/2008, -0/+18http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/12/05/
- dronesixtyten, on 12/30/2008, -0/+16Man if only they would've killed Hitler in the movie, maybe history could've gone down differently.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+15the word SPOILED in the title should have given you a clue
- chelbell, on 12/30/2008, -1/+15Marie Antoinette?
- iNaya, on 12/30/2008, -1/+14Or an average poorly educated human. I mean, in Thailand there are people who wear t-shirts of Hitler. I mean... Don't they realise Hitler considered them inferior? People are universally stupid, it's not just Americans, as much as people everywhere (including the U.S., funnily enough) like to take the piss out of them, but that's just average arsehole stupidity.
- andreo, on 12/30/2008, -0/+11Huh? Really?
I know I went to a public school. And I'm sure they missed some stuff in history. But... - Once908, on 12/29/2008, -7/+18thats because i have a distinct feeling some of the audience is an avg. poorly educated american. o_O
- bigdoglj52, on 12/30/2008, -0/+10it's not what you do but the way you do it that matters
- Pr0phet, on 12/30/2008, -0/+9Tsk. No Apollo 13.
- boardthis, on 12/30/2008, -0/+7of course he didnt. jesus mows my lawn.
- thesandmcmahon, on 12/30/2008, -0/+7What the *****! Darth Maul looked awesome despite the ***** of Episode I.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6I just saw the movie tonight with my wife, and even though we knew the outcome, it was still a very interesting (somewhat educating) movie. I caused me to go out and research the true plot of the assassination attempt. It was definitely something that I hadn't been fully aware of prior to watching the movie.
But yes, it's sad, but many are uneducated about even the most basic highlights of history. - hokie47, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6At least you didn't have some neo-nazi cheer when Hitler wasn't killed.
- x00x, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6
I remember this potato chip company in Asia, I forget which, Thailand, Cambodia, using Hitler in billboard advertisements that were eventually pulled due to the international uproar. The company and all those related to its promotion seem to have had very little knowledge of history. - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -1/+6How can he fall from a pile of poo?
- Frostek, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5Fatherland (from the the book by Robert Harris).
Would have been great if none of us knew anything about the WW2 time period... - NeonDistraction, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5As an example of what? A really cheesy crapfest, or an example of soul-less cashing in on a national tragedy, utterly devoid of any real emotional content and artificially fluffed up by special effects?
- Pixelante, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4You can if you're short enough, which Tom jump-on-the-couch-scientology-Cruise-Holmes is, in spades. Anyway, he was good in Collateral.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4tried too hard.
- AncientWeird, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4Thats why all the best movies are worth watching x number of times.
- Mankind121, on 12/30/2008, -1/+5That was the first movie that popped in my head when I saw the title.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -1/+5He stopped the train with mind bullets.
A for affort. - hokie47, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4What I banged her last Halloween
- epynephrin, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3Perhaps Pearl Harbor isn't the greatest example, but the idea of going into a story knowing the ending is one that's been around for centuries. People going to hear Homer recite the Iliad and Odyssey already knew the story--how it would run and how it would end; but what was important was the way in which it was told. Everyone knew that the Iliad was a song about the fall of Troy, yet they went in to hear it; partly because the poem is epic and beautiful, and partly because they had nothing better to do (they were illiterate farmers before the internet was invented).
Granted, many of these films are nowhere near the epics they're emulating (300 is my pick from the list), but knowing how it ends going in doesn't necessarily ruin the film--unless the film itself is poorly executed (and that's a subjective thing, in the end). - TheSabre, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3I disagree.
A Few Good Men and Jerry Maguire were excellent movies. - tylercasset, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3Yes, you did. The originals, which they're considering historical, spoiled the prequels since we all know Anakin (spoiler alert if you've been in a cave for the last 30 years) becomes Vadar. Not that tough to figure out.
- carbonfilament, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3Minority Report was a pretty good movie. The thing is he's the same person in every movie. And now when I watch his movies all I can think of is that he's exactly the same person that we've seen many times before. Also I can't stop thinking of Xenu.
- alexforcefive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3stupid is not the same as ignorant, iNaya
- CedEx, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3And Marley...
- Giga, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3I'm not sure how, but he managed to do just that.
- Kanten, on 12/30/2008, -2/+5"Spoiled by History"
"Star Wars"
Did I miss something here? - betheturtle, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3Hey, guys, what about Monty Python and the Holy Grail! History shows how that ends.
- yosserhughes, on 12/30/2008, -1/+4How about U571? Another Hollywood re-write of history, but ask an American today who captured the Enigma machine and guess what answer you'll get.
The film's plot is partly based on real events, it was British personnel from HMS Bulldog who first captured a naval Enigma machine, from U-110 in the North Atlantic May 1941, before the United States entered the war.
The real U-571 was never involved in any such events, was not captured, and was in fact sunk in January 1944, off Ireland, by a Short Sunderland flying boat from No. 461 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force. - gixxer600, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2actually that happened sry
- Spoomeister, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2By this article's logic, no one should ever own a movie on DVD, or ever go to see a movie more than once. Because hey, you already know the ending, right?
Quality storytelling works even if you already know the ending. Only cheap, gimmicky throwaway films rely on surprises. - BossKey, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2Or what about opera, where it actually helps if you know the entire story beforehand. They even give it to you to read (the libretto).
Or like an amusement park. When you want to go on a ride again, it's not because of the ending, but because of the middle. - poet, on 12/31/2008, -0/+2Hey, is it alright if I bring this dead horse into the room and beat it?
- TruthKid, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2that's what she said
- MRintheKeys, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Old Yeller too...
- kilodelta, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2three spoilers!
why why why did i click expand??! -
