- slashpslayer, on 04/09/2008, -0/+20I don't think we REALLY need Christine again....if they are going to go Steven King vehicular horror, they should go MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE!
- positron, on 04/09/2008, -3/+16Stop the remakes! Hollywood must be destroyed!
- covertress, on 04/09/2008, -1/+10The Hunger should NEVER be remade. As it is, a classic!
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -1/+7Remakes are severely lame, don't encourage them. New creative ideas would be much more enjoyable.
- YME1280, on 04/09/2008, -3/+8The 80's were the peak of horror. Everything now is just garbage. Regardless the article is a good read. Thanks Wyld...
- SuperVepr308, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5I could see In the Mouth of Madness but The Thing????? Are you nuts? Please don't let them ruin the best of Carpenter's work. And Zombie over Carpenter???? What????
- shotgunefx, on 04/09/2008, -0/+5Um, no.
Almost every movie there still stands fine, and they won't be improved.
Child's Play? No point, still a great flick.
Fright Night? Still dates just fine, but some kids might wonder why "Marcy" from Married with Children (if they know what that is), is the "babe"
The Hunger? Still dates pretty well, and while I'm all for lipstick lesbians, I think it's a bit subtle (aging commentary etc) to be made today. For todays market, go right to apeing Vampyres.
The Dead Zone? Still awesome, and there is absolutely no way they'd handle a movie about presidential assassination the same way today in a big budget movie. The TV show is bad enough.
Basket Case? Maybe, still a great twisted movie, even on it's non-existent budget.
Christine? No thanks. Still a good movie, and I can't see it being anything but a damn car commercial. Oh, yeah, this Pontiac is haunted, it killed the dealer last October when it came out on the floor of the showroom. - threemagic, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4You play a good game, boy.
- JavertHolmes, on 04/09/2008, -0/+4Every modern (say, last 15 years) horror film remake I've seen has sucked for the sole reason that it's been redone with flashier editing. As soon as I'm distracted by the editing in a film -- multiple jump cuts, rapid-fire cutting, flashy transitions -- I'm immediately taken out of the scene and the mini-Ebert in my brain takes over.
Some of the best older horror stuff that takes itself seriously is done in an almost documentary style where you feel like you're either the character on screen or a cautious observer hoping you don't get noticed, while today's scares mostly come from sound effects, a quick gore shot, or editing games. - Vaughanabe13, on 04/09/2008, -2/+6Remakes are just a cop out of original ideas. And besides, just about every one gets bashed by critics and starts another conversation about why they should never remake horror movies.
- ZenMojo, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3I was interested, and then he threw in Child's Play and he lost me. Oh, and STAY THE ***** AWAY FROM FRIGHT NIGHT.
Rule #1 of remakes: Only remake bad movies unless...
Rule #2 of remakes: Technology sucked so much you HAVE to update it visually.
That said, do not update Fright Night. Do not rehash The Dead Zone. DO NOT TOUCH CHRISTINE. JUST WATCH THE DAMN ORIGINALS. - actionscripted, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3There are some good ones, but the comedy element in horror films seems to be seen by the masses nowadays as cheesy and none of them are given proper credit.
A few recent gems:
Slither
The Descent
Cabin Fever
High Tension
Slither especially hit that perfect mix of cheese, humor and gore. "Where's the god-damn Mr. Pibb!?" - inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3The 80s was the peak of most everything i.e. Music, film, TV, the economy. It has been a downhill slide every since (except for the internet)
- fluidfoundation, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3I'd like a Phantasm reboot.
- Vagari, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3Buried for suggesting that Uwe Boll movies are in the "so bad, they're good" category.
- inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3Why the ***** is this know nothing ***** encouraging the remake hackery that has become standard Hollywood cancer? Remake Christine & The Hunger?! He probably thought "Charlie & The Chocolate Factory" was a good idea.
- supermanred, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3The Stand really needs an R-rated remake.
Still waiting for The Dark Tower series though, that would be like a 10 movie epic. - acdcfanbill, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3Uh... Coscarelli does it better than anyone else could.
- shotgunefx, on 04/09/2008, -0/+3The Thing is still awesome. Dates incredibly well for an FX movie. I don't really care to see ITMOM remade either, but you could certainly make better arguments for it. #1, many people never saw it.
- ByrcheWroot, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2I think I had read elsewhere that a Fright Night remake was already in the works. I hope not. That's so not cool, Brewster.
- bigtizzle, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2The Dark Tower as an epic movie saga is the one thing I would want to see before I die.
- dogbyte_13, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Basket Case!!! hell yeah what a freaky ass movie
- astrotrain, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Maximum should be left as is... the OST was great....and the whole nostalgia is perfect... AC/DC singing while machines are taking over the world. Only bits and pieces were derived from "Trucks" (Nightmares and Dreamscapes novel that Maximum is based on). And USA had a Made-for-TV version of the original story which stayed in line.
As like the Made for TV Shinning, I prefered the modified Hollywood version. The original story (which was ok) seemed better on the big screen with its modifications.
Now Christine, could maybe get a make-over. The book was far better then the movie, I would have loved to see Christine coming into the house coming after Darnel in his house. Or see the real Petunia (which was septic truck and not a bulldozer). (Yeah I read this novel a few too many times).
I enjoy the "possessed" car films... The Car, Christine, Herbie The Love Bug, My Mother The Car (tv series), etc.
The Car... now thats a GREAT B movie... the horn alone haunts my mind! - mal1964, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2OK
- josabz2, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2horror movies being remade = scary movie series
- SuperVepr308, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Is Emilio up to the challenge? Will Angus guest-star? These are the things I need to know.
- SuperVepr308, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2I really hope they don't remake and thus ***** up Fright Night. That is a good flick and they should just let it be. Remakes generally suck anyway (though The Hills have Eyes was an improvement).
- ZenMojo, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Not counting the highly-rated videogame official sequel?
- jcroweall7, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2There's already been talk of a Child's Play remake...
- SuperVepr308, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2I understand your point but I just can't see them improving on The Thing. The short story was great and Carpenter stayed very true to it (hence the fact it was outstanding). I think some movies are done well enough that the only place to go is down if you try to mess with them.
- smacksaw, on 04/09/2008, -1/+3I want to clarify my earlier post and expand on it. Think about Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street...or a Romero zombie film. They all pretty much have the same plot and idea, they just switch them up a little bit. That's why I like the idea of remaking old horror flicks because the mythology and characters are already established. Let people make their own interpretations of them. How about Argento and Romero? Expand on something like that...where one adds to the other's work, or does the other's work.
What if Carpenter did...Saw? Or Argento did a Jason film? Could you imagine Jason with zombies? Open your minds on this people. These stories are not canon. Most of them are not locked in time. Use your imagination - it could be pretty exciting. Think about King re-writing Dawn of the Dead. Romero's social commentary with a King twist? Get Carpenter to direct. Horror is about taking advantage of our imaginations and letting them run wild. Being so rigid in what a horror movie should be is anathema to the entire thought process behind what makes them so brilliant. - inactive, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2bride & seed are my favorites.
- sproket, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2The Thing. Actually better would be a sequel. Scientists go back after 30 years to the quarantined zone..... Chaos ensues....
- paidhima, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Don't touch The Thing. Movies in general, much less horror/sci-fi movies, rarely date well. That's part of the reason why masterpieces like Alien and 2001 are called masterpieces. The Thing was perfect. Not to mention I really don't want to see what they would do with the spider-head-monster, dog-monster and the single greatest "jump" scene in all of cinema history.
- smacksaw, on 04/09/2008, -0/+2Those are both timeless in their own way, but Christine (and Carrie) would work as a contemporary film, while I think Maximum Overdrive would go overboard. Think about all you know about computers and hacking. To simplify that subject would make it unwatchable to people with technical knowledge, and making it accurately technical would make it boring, too long, etc.
It really was the right film at the right time. But you could do Christine today with the same damn car, even. - astrotrain, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Yes, The Stand needs to have a better version, one thats not to "nice"... although the music for the TV series did go well and fit the scenes... nothing is more haunting and seeing dead bodies in various stages of decay or places all over while listening to "Don't Dream Its Over" (by Ice House)
Or the sounds of The Blue Oyster Cult "Don't Fear The Reaper" as people are trying to run away from the Virus that is already airborne. - Elranzer, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1The following movies need to be remade: None of them
- antdude, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Make new ones! Original ideas, but then we're out of new ideas.
- astrotrain, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Surviving Humans, Christine, Maximum Overdrive, Kruger and Zombies. Interesting, now make it a complicated twist, such as the humans must avoid zombies and Christine. But Christine at the same time, hates the Zombies and is out to destroy them. Zombies... they attack Humans and attempt to destroy Christine. And while you have this going on, Christine calls in for re-enforcements, the Toy truck from Maxium Overdrive.
Meantime Humans are trying to escape this nightmarish hell and avoid all machines and zombies at all costs, while escaping from the state of New York while being haunted in their dreams by Freddy Kruger.
Last we see Freddy Kruger driving Christine to run over a few zombies and humans while hanging his bladed hand out the window slicing and dicing as he drives. Just then the Toy Truck decides to take Christine out and Freddy screams as the headlights of the truck shine through Christine's windshield onto his burned face. - 5celery, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1Day of the Triffids - not 80's, but very underrated.
- mal1964, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Why should i start now, I haven't even seen the opening credits to that show.
- astrotrain, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1No no no no... That's fine the way it is... the sounds, plot, etc..... That I would like to see come out on DVD again...
- paidhima, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Agreed. I haven't seen High Tension, but The Descent was very good and Cabin Fever was fun. Slither was fantastic, mostly because they had some really, really on-point actors (led by the always-awesome Nathan Fillion).
- ZenMojo, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1Not counting the highly-rated 6-season television series?
- robotderek42, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1I'd like to see Rob Zombie take on FREAKS (circa 1932). Not really a "horror" movie per sé, but it would kick ass.
Agreed. Not Child's Play remake. - belebih, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1“Re-imagining” is just a lame attempt to disguise the fact that you are doing a remake so you don’t get as much negative criticism. But no matter how you spin it, it’s still a remake, and it’s still going to be inferior to the original no matter how many cult horror actors you squeeze into it to try to up your credibility. (e.g. Zombie’s Halloween)
- paidhima, on 04/09/2008, -0/+1I agree. Christine was good as it was. They could remake it, but unless it were essentially identical to the first I don't see it working. Maximum Overdrive, on the other hand, could be killer (no pun intended). They would be walking a fine line though - they would risk falling into terminator/matrix/transformers territory with machine intelligence and human/machine relationships.
- Darksoul, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1Don't ***** touch fright night and Christine leave them as classics no need to remake them to this day they still look good. All we need is them making some new version and changing the cars and ***** I can see them making Christine into a mini van or something...... and Fright Night though made in like 1985 I believe still looks good no need to update them the rest of the movies I could give two ***** about. Good thing they didn't list alien or aliens for that I would of killed somebody for that one.
- SuperVepr308, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1Absolutely correct. It was perfect so there is no need to "reimagine" it.
- thebuggman, on 04/10/2008, -0/+1why hasn't anyone remade The Tingler (starring Vincent Price)?
this is a great movie that I'm sure someone in Hollywood will totally butcher. -
