- pumacub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21"Service Temporarily Unavailable" was an awesome movie.
- skabber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Seven Samurai is my personal favorite. And the new criterion DVD release is really great.
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Did anyone else like "Kung-Fu Hustle" as much as I did? A very humurous departure from the norm with great fight scenes.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No "Enter the Dragon" = no digg
And prominent were the martial arts in Akira? - zointax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7No list is complete without Bloodsport. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092675/
- kinesis8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Not exactly a good top 10 list.. there were two notable omissions from the list:
Once Upon a Time in China part 2
Fearless
and Fist of Legends DEFINITELY belongs in the top 3 - carlhungus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7What!!! No "Super Ninjas" -- (Wu dun ren shu) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084921/), "Master Killer" (Shao Lin san shi liu fang) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078243/), "Shogun Assassin" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081506/). This is a travesty!
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5how about this?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=hW34yJXbcf4
final scene from fist of legend. best fight scene ever? it deserves consideration. best finishing move ever? well, jet li shows just how literally dangerous a black belt can be..... - Ascendant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6As a martial arts film fan I would say this is a pretty decent list, but I would make some changes. "Seven Samurai" was an excellent film, but not really a "martial arts" movie. Similarly, I liked “Crouching Tiger” and really liked “Kill Bill” but, if you’re focusing on the martial arts aspect specifically, neither of these belong in the top 10 as the fight scenes were good but not stellar.
They really need to add one of the Lone Wolf and Cub movies on there (most badass samurai action films of all time)
I thought Tony Jaa’s “Tom Yum Goong” (“The Protector”) was even better than “Ong Bak,” but I can’t really argue with putting a Tony Jaa movie at #3- he's definitely the best martial arts star since Bruce Lee.
The other Top 10 selections are very solid, can’t really argue with those at all. - 0x000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I can't take this list seriously. Matrix is listed but Enter the Dragon isn't.
- Samek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i agree Master Killer (The 36 Chambers of Shaolin) should defineely be there. It is my favorite martial arts movie of all time.
- wildjohn999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why was Akira in that list?
Here's a few that were missed:
Breathing Fire - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101509/ (Jerry Trimble and Bolo)
Best of the Best - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096913/ (TKD action)
The Street Fighter - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073756/ (Sonny Chiba)
Bloodsport - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092675/ (The best of Van Damage)
Fists of Fury - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067824/ (Really violent Lee movie)
The Chinese Connection - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068767/ (Lee versus the Japanese)
Way of the Dragon - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068935/ (Lee versus Chuck Norris)
Forced Vengeance - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083960/ (Norris' best)
Karate Kid - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087538/ (Sweep the leg Johnny!) - thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5what about Shogun Assassin?
- reggiedarden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They've got some good choices but some of them....come on Kill Bill and Matrix some of the best martial arts movies?!?!?! That's crazy talk. I liked both of those movies but the certainly were not the best.
- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4hey, a list that calls Akira "an animated film that's not for children". wow.
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6i wanted to digg this, i really did. but.....
fist of legend at 10? are you out of your mind? i put it at 1, and would accept a top 5. but 10? *****
as stated already, 7 seven samurai is not a martial arts flick. great movie? yes. ditto for akira in the bonus section.
no sonny cheeba?
sorry, no digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4whichever idiot that dugg Ptyx down should actually look at the list...
if you've only watched movies on that list, try hiring one of Jackie Chan's oldschool movies
the fighting in those movies are alot better than these Americanised safety precaution-crazy movies
(referring to)
http://digg.com/movies/Jakie_Chan_is_frustrated_with_Hollywood_s_safetly_rules - Aliasing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7This list is *****.
Seven Samurai is not a kung-fu film you halfwit blogspammer.
"Be ready for subtitles, ‘cuz turning on the English track is like watching…uh…like watching a kung fu movie in English."
*facedesk* - Ptyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I agree the list is a joke. It looks like the guy put every single martial arts movie or asian related movie he ever saw on the list and that's it.
- whiskeymb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5markthewiz
ong bak was included... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No Beverly Hills Ninja?? this list is *****
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4...for people who want the quick version. In order as shown on the site:
Way of the Dragon
Shaolin Temple
Ong Bak
Iron Monkey
5 Deadly Venoms
The Seven Samurai
Legend of Drunken Master
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Kill Bill Vol. 1
Fist of Legend - johnnydepp13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like KillBill but come-on.
what about Drednought,Legendary Weapons
The Wong Fei Hung series, Once Upon in China 1,2,3 - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Jackie Chan also should have gotten at least one more, even if it was in the honorable mentions at the end. And I'm not sure why Akira?? was put in when you have Fist of the North Star and Ninja Scroll out there.
- CptCancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No Master of the Flying Guillotine?
- SanTe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Now "36th Chamber of Shaolin" THAT"S Martial Arts at its BEST!!!"
Samek knows what he's talking about. If you haven't seen it, import Celestial Pictures' region 3 DVD from HKFlix.com. Then you can forget about the ten films on this list entirely.
I was lucky enough to see 36th Chamber in a cool theater at a local film festival three years ago when Celestial released their restored print (DVD was released in East Asia shortly thereafter). My digg nick and picture are of the Master Killer himself. :) - Whoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WHAT what happened with M -O -R-T -A-L C- O -M- B -A- T!!!!
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6149754563453670209 - SanTe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Links to HKFlix.com for 36th Chamber of Shaolin (a.k.a. Shaolin Master Killer):
Shaolin Master Killer [IVL] - Region 3 NTSC
This is Celestial Pictures' restored print -- best quality I've seen
http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/filmID.528251/qx/details.htm
Shaolin Master Killer [PanMedia Version 2]
Relatively new Region 0 NTSC U.S. release -- print quality unknown (to me anyway)
http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/filmID.536694/qx/details.htm - rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Exactly what I thought while reading, Kung Fu Hustle was a movie as good as it was under appreciated. This and Legend of Drunken Master should have been 1 & 2, although I also think The Protector should have been in instead of Ong Bak.
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Akira? My ass. One of my favorite movies but only one martial art move in the entire flick!
I think Kill Bill Vol. 1 definitely deserves to be in there. The fight with the Crazy 88, the knife fight, the sword duel, all excellent.
I think, however, that The Streetfighter needs a spot. As does Rumble in the Bronx. (Although I guess they were limiting Jackie Chan movies...because then you'd have to add Supercop, also, and we'd run out of space for everybody else.)
Technically Seven Samurai counts as a Martial Arts movie since it involves an actual Martial Art and is very much about Bushido. - mangolio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sha Po Lang (released in the US on DVD as "Killzone") has some of the best fight choreography I've seen in the past decade. I'd take Kill Bill Vol. 1 off the list and replace it with SPL.
- Samek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3KILL BILL? I love the first one, and i love Uma Thurman but she can't fight at all. It is obvious in the movie.
Now "36th Chamber of Shaolin" THAT"S Martial Arts at its BEST!!! - Mandeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4you're damn right. as soon as i realized bloodsport wasn't on the list i cried because jean claude van damme doesn't deserve this monstrosity.
- mrneutron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2New Legend of Shaolin. Mandatory.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110054/ - ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6If the quality of the film making and the imagery used is as important as the actual fight scenes, I feel "Hero" was amazing. I liked it better than "Crouching Tiger..."
- dontuseautofire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What is this? No "Ricky-Oh"? No digg.
- DrPhibes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This list is Lame!!
Where is "The Kid With The Golden Arm" ??? - NiGHTSChao, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3*cries* No Kiss of the Dragon T_T
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6No "American Ninja"? No digg.
- bladzalot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I would like to see a martial arts list by someone that knows martial arts flicks... negative 5 diggs for this waste of space...I still have yet to see someone reference anything by Jeff Speakman
- EricDraven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gotta agree... like for the Matrix, I can't imagine someone asking, "did you watch the Matrix?" and me saying, "yeah, it was a very good martial arts film"... hope y'all get what I mean.
- jdonner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Finally someone who knows what he's talking about.
36th Chamber of Shaolin (Shao Lin san shi liu fang)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0078243/
Kill Bill....oh my, oh my.... - jdonner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Exactly. That "Enter the Dragon" is not on the list is beyond me. It is considered Bruce Lee's best film. The Way of the Dragon is good too, but without the Chuck Norris scene it falls really short.
- Jekko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No "Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon?" That's an excellent martial arts movie!
- jdonner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No digg. Any list like this that doesn't have "Enter the Dragon" , "36th Chamber or Shaolin" and "Hero" on it, yet does have Matrix and Kill Bill... mmm...do I need to say more.
- markzhen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I second that. Master of the Flying Guillotine should be on the list.
- Tekmazter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Chinese Super Ninja's was better than 5 Deadly Venom's ... I'm guessing this person just never saw many of the other movies commented on here. Poor b*stard!
In any event ... those of you who like good gore from 1982, check it out. It's got the goods. Fighting, gang fighting, elements fighting (yea I said elements!), and revenge. It's all in here, even trees that kick your arse! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3kung fu hustle was unbelievable. a departure from classical style perhaps, but an incredible story nonetheless
- ghm101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The best thing about this list is it is all on one page, without all that next page, next page, next page ad fests these top ten lists usually turn into.
Glad to see Jackie Chan represented. - javier1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1house of flying daggers was a great movie until the two fighers faught through 2 or 3 seasons (literally) at the end of the film. come on? what next, neo shows up and tells them the way?
