- gradivus, on 10/12/2008, -0/+17Yeah, Im sure you do lots of backflips on your dirt bike.
- palehorse864, on 10/12/2008, -1/+14I assume you're wanting to take it off of some sweet jumps.
- davidhallstrom, on 10/12/2008, -0/+12Cheap to operate and it looks like it might be fun.
- BillE3, on 10/12/2008, -0/+11Perfect tool for the pot growers to get the supplies into the forest.
- molotovcat, on 10/12/2008, -0/+9I only spend about $300 a year on fuel for my dirtbikes and maybe another $300 on maintenance. The high initial cost, strange ergonomics, and battery replacement cost are surefire deterrents for anyone who is really into offroading. Seems impractical but with all such toys, there will be (loaded) buyers.
- gradivus, on 10/12/2008, -0/+6With a 2 hour charge time and a 2 hour ride time you could run all day with just two battery packs(assuming you have an outlet handy). I would get one if I had an extra giant wad of cash to spend.
- Soulbow2, on 10/12/2008, -0/+6Looks more like an electric offroad bicycle. Those tires are so skinny!
- Murdats, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5attach a loud speaker to it.
- Katana314, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5Calling it the Zero-X made me think it would have at least SOMETHING to do with Megaman.
- Mie42, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5I wonder how well it survives water?
- gradivus, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4Lighting bolts.
- Griminal, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4It sounds like a rattle box without the sound of a gas motor. Nice step forward though.
- Crath, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4I watched a show where they tested this against a good 2 stroker and it sucked ass...
- mickstephenson, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4get a vespa
- snowrail, on 10/12/2008, -1/+4You can buy a decent 250cc dirt bike for what, $2000? Even if fuel hit $10 a gallon it would take a LONG time to make up the price difference between the bikes... This is a rich kid's toy for now, and likely electric bikes will stay that way a long time...
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -1/+3Wow this bike is hot. I wish it wasn't so expensive though...
- gradivus, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2Those are just scooters, I like the enduro quality of these. The offroad is what makes it cool.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2Unfortunately the high cost is the batteries though. They seem to be almost half of the cost of the bike. The expense of batteries like that is also what plagues electric and hybrid cars. There is a reason that some people still use lead acid batteries in electric cars. Once they reach another plateau in electric storage (cost/weight/performance-wise) we will see things like this look less silly.
- sq2shooter, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2That is nothing but a mountain bike with an electric motor. Calling it a motorcycle is a bit of a stretch.
- numb, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2I don't think most of us are going to trade our 2- or 4-strokes for one of these either. But there is a lot of pressure to develop quieter bikes and this is a step in that direction. Trails and tracks are getting shut down at an alarming rate, and the biggest complaint is usually the noise. Even MX is tightening the noise restrictions on race bikes in order to promote development of quieter bikes and aftermarket exhausts.
Lowering noise output is the driving force behind development of offroad bikes these days, moreso than fuel efficiency. - onelikeseabass, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2The last time I checked, mountain bikes had pedals.
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2Or a Faggio.
- morepowerr, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2Looks like BMX with motor
- MFoody, on 10/12/2008, -1/+2I'm really excited about these electric motorcycles. They aren't practical for what I need quite yet but living in LA where the weather is typically very nice and using my car mostly for drives 3-10 miles a street legal bike with a range of 30 miles would probably get more use than my car. Plus it would be a bad ass way to hurt myself.
- lead2thehead, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1I'd be worried about getting it wet. Most of my trail rides include a stream crossing or two.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1actually *most* of that charging will be overnight, when the grid is less taxed anyway. That's why some places offer reduced electric rates at night (for things like electric clothes dryers).
The grid has to handle the times of peak usage. Things like AC units cause spikes when the compressors kick on (why your lights dim). Between businesses (esp factories) and higher temperatures, that happens during the day. - gtluke, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1i'm not sure if its the same brand but i found some guys who build these things at a car rally in maine this year. they got cowboy kenny (backflip motocross guy, also races rally) and let him tool around on one.
http://gtluke.smugmug.com/photos/334058705_ie5rA-L ... - pcarm92, on 10/12/2008, -1/+2You can't paint flames on an electric off-road motorcycle. Or can you?
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1I'd rather get a vectrix, but they still want too much for those
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1well, the point is that gas models can do flips now. If you follow the Tesla Motors mindset, make an electric ride that blows most gas versions out of the water and people will take the platform seriously. The alternative mindset is to go for efficiency. This is cheap to charge but has a steep entry fee.
This is an oddball bike in that it only weighs 18 lbs, and goes fast as hell (for a lightweight dirt bike). It also costs a relatively steep $7,500 (half of that seems to be the batteries). That being said, watch the videos, it can jump. At 18 lbs the combined weight of rider and bike is more like a mountain bike than a motorcycle.
It actually looks pretty fun. It's not going to race against 400cc thumpers or anything, but it looks fun. - edebolt, on 10/12/2008, -1/+2too true !!!!
- Ramble, on 10/12/2008, -1/+2Bike tyres are a hell of a lot skinnier than that.
- diablozx9, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Just wait till there is Hydro/Electric Brown-Outs due to everyone plugging in there cars and bikes.
It wont be 0.25 to re-fill. - cyclingorth, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Do motorcycles cause enough environmental distress to warrant this? It has no near the power as a gas bike. Like the many comments before me the performance is no where near the same.
- onelikeseabass, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1sq2shooter: I see epic fail in your post. It is something that may look similar to a mountain bike, but a mountain bike it is not.
FTA: (which you clearly did not read or are simply ignoring)
The light weight of the motorcycle itself is due to an innovative mix of motorcycle and modified bicycle parts and to an aircraft aluminum frame that weighs 18 pounds. - johnpaul191, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Yeah, but it's a start. There are electric street bikes that are at least as fast as their gasoline cousins. Right now they are conversions, so unless you have a blown engine on your sportbike, it seems crazy (from a financial standpoint).
- wrestlingnrj, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Sorry, but this is a fail. I'll stick with my CR-250 (Honda 250cc 2-stroke) that would completely blow the doors off of this in every category, including ride time, which only cost me a whoppin $2500.
- sq2shooter, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1Not if you take them off and put on pegs. They cleary took a mountain bike frame, made a few adjustments and placed an electric motor on it. Unfortunately, that frame is not built to hold 150 pounds plus the weight of the rider. I see epic frame failure and lawsuits in their future.
- SSUK, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Yeah, makes you sound MORE like a douche riding around residential areas at 2am.
- grndslm, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1And if you don't have a giant wad of cash to spend... build your own motorized bicycle (gasoline or electric) for anywhere from $400 to $2000.
4-strokes on a 26" bike get 250 MPG & 30 MPH. I'll wait until batteries get cheaper and can actually hold a charge.
See how to build your own motorized bicycle at... http://motoredbikes.com/showthread.php?t=10392 - SSUK, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1The battery will die as frequently as a novice player?
- linagee, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1But can you take it on the city bus in the bicycle rack when it runs out of battery or do you have to walk it home? It looks like a bicycle but would probably be considered a non-towable dirtbike to the bus driver.
- wineinc, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1I've researched electric bicycles before. Except for the price, this does not look too bad. The Optibike brand still is the best I've found. I keep waiting for this brand to take off so that the prices will come down.
http://www.optibike.com/index.php?option=com_conte ... - offroadchickee, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1Way too flashy and expensive for me...
- grndslm, on 10/12/2008, -0/+0For real... $8,000 plus $3,000 for a replacement battery. NO THANKS!!
I'll stick with my motorized bicycles.... getting 200+ MPG and 30+ MPH for a bike that could cost anywhere from $400 to $1500.

They have a separate forum for E-bikes if that's what you're really into. Just the whole battery thing that stops me from taking that jump just yet. - jonnycracked, on 10/12/2008, -0/+0the bike costs close to 8000 dollars i think ill pass.
- Ijantis, on 10/12/2008, -1/+1did anyone else read f-zero x?
damn that dissapointed me - grndslm, on 10/12/2008, -0/+0I have a folding 20" bicycle powered by a rack-mounted 33cc 2-stroke that I can fold up and put in the backseat or trunk of any vehicle, especially a Civic. It gets 100 MPG, goes 30 MPH, and I can pedal it if I'm low on gas.
Obviously there are other routes you can take... a 2-stroke on a recumbent trike... a 4-stroke on a mountain bike... an electric cruiser. You can build a high-quality, custom motorized bicycle for $1,000 give or take $500... just depends on what you want.

*Hint* *Hint* - Check out the NuVinci CVT hub. It should blow your mind. - lead2thehead, on 10/12/2008, -0/+0It doesn't need the wider wheels. At 140 pounds, it about half the weight of a regular dirt bike.
- grndslm, on 10/12/2008, -0/+0Yup... 2-strokes and 4-strokes FTW!
I get more than 200 MPG without pedaling my bicycle... for around $60 of fuel costs all year long. Bums could actually afford transportation if they new about motorized bicycles.
Check out the Crash Course for motorized bikes here... http://motoredbikes.com/showthread.php?t=10392
There's a bicycle anywhere that can be converted to using a tiny 33cc ~ 50cc engine. And these bikes don't need insurance, registration, and licensing... obviously depending on what state you live in, tho.
Oh yea.... Your welcome! -
