- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -8/+64I wish America had a show like this. You Britt's have so much better TV than we do in general.
- boardrunnr, on 07/14/2009, -2/+45Notice the sign for Twatt on the left in the second video?
- carlj133, on 07/14/2009, -18/+52I disagree, Top Gear is an exception but generally British TV sucks balls.
- RedHawk911, on 07/14/2009, -0/+27Top Gear is quality TV. Best show ever
- UK31337, on 07/14/2009, -0/+20Meh, I dunno about that. We invented Dr Who/Torchwood, Life On Mars/Ashes to Ashes, Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, Scrapheap Challenge (called "Junkyard Wars" in the US) and of course Top Gear. There's also loads of other great shows that probably don't air in the US.
American TV *shows* are generally pretty good (gotta get me some CSI:NY, Law and Order, and all the other crime dramas), but the on-screen presentation and unbelievably sensationalist news bulletins put me right off when I visited my family in various parts of the Midwestern USA (they're spread all over, my great-aunt emigrated with her American serviceman husband after the war) in Summer 2001. What's with all the rhetoric, loud voices and all the news channels being called things like "WKTV NBC Channel 10HD Downtown ***** Metro Area" and carrying duff stories like a cop executing a black teenager and getting a 40% payrise and promotion?
If you have satellite TV from Sky in the UK you can watch live Fox News (the US edition) and if you're watching Sky News at 1am it switches and shows you the US CBS 8pm news live as well. None of it holds a candle to the way we do it, sorry.
Back on topic... that was a fairly epic race. I still think "Car sauna" from the previous week took the cake though :D - mattharvey716, on 07/14/2009, -0/+19there are no commercials on BBC...
- vacax, on 07/14/2009, -3/+20Looks like a hell of a sedan, it is a shame it has to be so goddamned ugly. Looks like a station wagon with down's syndrome.
- chris1234, on 07/14/2009, -2/+19Same here, gotta love that show!
- theysayjump, on 07/14/2009, -1/+18Trust me, we have more than two. ;)
- morefrommoe, on 07/14/2009, -1/+17there is no ridiculousness, its a porsche.
thats right, its german.
i lol'd. - Mark1981, on 07/14/2009, -0/+13It Crowd
Darkplace - might be a bit too short for Americans only last six episodes.
Have I Got New For You
QI
I'd say on the whole the percentage of top quality programs in the UK exceed that of the US, but the US makes up for it in numbers. Although it is really annoying your tv execs are pulling great shows before they find their legs. - inactive, on 07/14/2009, -7/+20the panamera looked great. i actually want that car now.
- pinserz, on 07/14/2009, -3/+14they should have put more of this race in the show! too many highway shots and not enough of the windy roads of scotland too.
i never thought i'd like that panamera, but i sort of do now... - juhache, on 07/14/2009, -0/+10Peep show
- RandyTheFool, on 07/14/2009, -4/+14It was "canceled". Jeremy Clarkson didn't believe there was a market for Top Gear in America. I don't agree, but I'm glad it's not happening. It sounded really horrible. Adam Corrola? Blech.
All we need is unedited versions of Top Gear in the US. - number11, on 07/14/2009, -0/+9BBC do make some quality shows like QI, Have I Got News For You, Mock The Week and some of the best documentaries around.
Channel 4 have Peep show, Shameless and Skins do well, and ITV have a lot of other mindless things.
Plus we import a lot of your "comedy", which isnt that funny at all, apart from Jon Stewart / Colbert Report and Curb your enthusiasm, South Park, Family guy. - MeLikeyTacos, on 07/14/2009, -1/+10It didn't last long...
- Harrison88, on 07/14/2009, -0/+9Yup. Straight to the door. There's a flap in the door where the mail goes :P
- Imissnaptime, on 07/14/2009, -0/+9Top Gear, Black Books, Green Wing, need to be brought stateside unchanged. feel free to add to this list.
- pardonator, on 07/14/2009, -0/+9This might just be the noobiest thing ever, but...I've never understood american mailboxes, what's to stop random people stealing your mail when it's left in there?
- jimpim, on 07/14/2009, -3/+12We used to have fantastic TV, mainly comedy, but these days I watch 90% American TV. Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Daily Show, The Wire, The Shield, Family Guy, Penn & Teller's *****, LOST.
To name just a hand full. Much love. - Rotzooi, on 07/14/2009, -1/+10Jeremy Paxman
- majorhi, on 07/14/2009, -0/+8Gotta love the BBC! Hardly any commercials as well! It's on Saturdays stateside.
- Awwzm, on 07/14/2009, -3/+11I never really liked the Panamera. It kinda looks like a squashed Cayenne. But after seeing in motion, it's not that bad.
The sat nav display on the dash was cool. - Hraes, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7Federal law. Lots of it. Every mailbox you buy has some ***** about it being the property of the US government stamped on it.
I can totally understand why you'd wonder though. - Awwzm, on 07/14/2009, -2/+9There are actually two Twatt's in Scottland: Orkney and Sthetland.
- 3leggedHorse, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7Still not as good as their road trip in the states.
Man love rules.
NASCAR sux.
you're in a hicks town now.
lol - nicktabs, on 07/14/2009, -1/+7Eh?? U try not using anything from the BBC for a week, bet u can't!
- skit4king, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6The rest of that episode was just as good, EVO 7 against the British Army with live ammunition!
- mattharvey716, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6yeah but it wasnt actually was it.
Still i do enjoy top gear at times - Inceptious, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6...
Sigh. The only reason you think we have good shows is that you only hear about the good ones. - MrHawkins, on 07/14/2009, -1/+7Mock the Week uncensored
- themusicalduck, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6The Inbetweeners
- mickstephenson, on 07/14/2009, -1/+6It may have been fabricated, but their main argument was based in reality, ie batteries are excruciatingly slow to charge and recovery in the inevitable event of running out of juice is going to be a painful and expensive experience.
- Orsenfelt, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5I don't believe it was live ammunition.
Health & Safety would shut the whole country down for a risk assessment if they even thought about doing it. - zeebo, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5Do you know how much basic cable costs in the US where you get basically just the networks and home shopping? Yeah it costs more.
- lepetitmousse, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5Do they not use mailboxes in Britain? Do the mailmen go right into your house?
- number11, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5Spaced
- FightTest, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5Top Gear is the best TV show ever and Richard Hammond's hair looks ***** ridiculous long.
- LostRiot, on 07/14/2009, -1/+5No commercials, But TV's are taxed you know.
- borez, on 07/14/2009, -1/+5Bollocks mate, we have top gear, but you have: True Blood, Kings, Burn notice, Weeds, Criminal Minds, 24, Lost , Dexter, Friday night lights, The Wire, Mad Men, House, Shark... do I really need to go on?
- PenisBreath, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4American over German?
- alamedaman, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3next time- vladivostok to portugal. a pan-eurasia race would be sweet.
- DemDude, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3I second that! Seriously - American over German! There is no reason whatsoever to do that.
American Luxury Sedans aren't even on par with German lower middle class... - buckyballs, on 07/15/2009, -1/+4Yes, but we pay the $250 to the BBC. If you want cable or satellite in the UK, you then have to pay more on top of that.
- juhache, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3A shotgun under the kitchen sink.
- juhache, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4Ever wondered what the 2 minute you spend staring at between shows are?
They may only be for BBC programmes, but they're still adverts ;-) - juhache, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3I'm pretty sure they are thinking of their American audience, it's just that us Brits pay £142.50 a year so we can use iPlayer and all other BBC services, which is the only way that they have an income.
So to get round this for the American audience it would most certainly involve a subscription based iPlayer, something that i just don't think they would do.. it's just not proper! - allyant, on 07/15/2009, -2/+4Here was me thinking it was Park Head...
