cool article - doublefelix, on 09/20/2008, -3/+18Dale Earhhardts crash definitely looks like one he should have been able to walk away from
- onceler70, on 09/20/2008, -1/+14Where the ***** is Geoff Bodine's truck crash? That was worse than half this *****. Buried.

That's a real crash. - kingfoot, on 09/20/2008, -0/+13number one wasnt a surprise at all.

Seriously, could you be more ignorant? If your gonna dumb one thing down, dumb it all down. Don't be an *****.
* I don't seriously believe this. - tehsilentcircus, on 09/20/2008, -3/+14The dumbed-down and ridiculously ignorant comments above (and I am sure more will come) make you all sound like childish morons mocking something they are unable to comprehend. I know most of your views of the world are based on complete ignorance, but I have heard first graders say more intelligent things. Have some god damn respect.
I have never really been a fan of NASCAR, but I did grow up with it in my family, so I found this article interesting.
Not to mention the complaints about a 10 page article.. seriously, cry me a river.
I have a feeling I'm going to set a personal record for buries with this one ... - credential101, on 09/20/2008, -6/+16RIP Dale Earnhardt
- inactive, on 09/20/2008, -2/+11It's like watching a car accident!
- tehsilentcircus, on 09/20/2008, -2/+11Yeah well in an environment like digg, all car racing is is "going in circles and turning left for and extended period of time." These people have never heard of a road course I guess. Anyways, I would like to see someone with that kind of attitude strap themselves into a car and even last a second.
And you are correct on another thing. I grew up with my dad racing, all my life, I never became a huge fan of NASCAR. but I would watch him race, and watch it on TV sometimes. My point is, that was my family. And they aren't and never were "conservative hillbilly rednecks," as they say. So people can say it all they want, but it is just NOT TRUE.
People should just learn to stop running their traps and mocking something they don't understand. - FrankTheTank17, on 09/20/2008, -0/+8You want to talk about physical abilities? Go get 3-4 of your friends in the middle of a heat wave in the summer. Get all your winter gear out and dress as if it's -10 degrees, roll up your windows and put the heat on high. On top of that, drive around a course as fast as you can and as close to them as you possibly can. Oh ya, you also don't get to eat/drink or go to the bathroom during the race. I guarentee you, you wouldn't be able to do that for 5, maybe 10 minutes, never mind doing it for 3-4 hours.
- skews13, on 09/20/2008, -6/+13i've been a nascar fan for 30 years. it's one of the only unscripted, and real things on television that's worth a *****. when we lost dale earnhardt, it was one of the saddest days in my life. you don't have to be a conservative to be a fan. you would be surprised how many fans that aren't.
- jshooter1377, on 09/20/2008, -0/+7He was, but the belts were twisted...they tore from the tension of the crash.
- gsnedders, on 09/20/2008, -0/+7The sad thing is that other formula often don't learn from mistakes in one formula: for example, HANS devices were mandated in all FIA series at the time of Dale Earnhardt's fatal crash (they had already been widespread among F1 drivers, ever since Ronald Ratzenberger's crash at Imola in 1994, who may well have survived if he had a HANS device). Above all else, never be complacent.
- rockon4life45, on 09/20/2008, -0/+5Sure he's not flipping all over the track but he went from 150 MPH to 0 MPH in an instant. He also supposedly wore his seatbelt lose which increased the distance his body traveled before coming to a halt therefore in greatly increasing the G force. A huge force spread out over a long time isn't that bad, but a huge force spread over a split second is catastrophic.
- jshooter1377, on 09/20/2008, -4/+9Dale Earnhardt was THE best driver in NASCAR...no doubt about it. I have yet to see anyone in the sport (yes, NASCAR is a sport...so stfu...anyone who says it isn't, start a team and try not to epically fail) who can match his skill, composure, and aggression behind the wheel.
RIP - jshooter1377, on 09/20/2008, -0/+5Sooo, fighting 3+ G's at each turn and 120+ degree heat for 4 hours are not physical abilities? Get real dude...
Also, what people like you don't understand is that NASCAR is more than just turning left...most, if not all the people working on the cars have bachelor degrees, master degrees, or a Ph.D in engineering from a highly ranked university. It takes a lot of knowledge to make a 3,400 pound car go around a track at 150+ miles per hour.
But, your words already exemplify your ignorance, incompetence, and incoherentness on the matter, so I really don't have to point that out to everyone do I... - explnx, on 04/27/2009, -3/+8What about Schumacher? McRae? And every other driver at an event with bends?
- FrankTheTank17, on 09/20/2008, -1/+5Who the hell was talking about McCain? Stop trying to make sports articles about politics.
- StevenBullen, on 09/19/2008, -9/+13Warning: This is a 10 page article. I didnt DIGG for this exact reason.
- jstem1994, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4I prefer a good SCCA Road Rally. Hard to find on US television.
- PamalaLauren, on 09/20/2008, -1/+5I miss Dale Earnhardt. I couldn't even watch that video at all. That was devastating. And yeah it sounds stupid, how can people feel so bad for someone they didn't even know, but growing up my whole life as a fan of his, it was like losing a family member. NASCAR has never been the same since. Damn arrogant drivers with their attitudes that they're owed ***** (Kyle Busch in particular). At least Dale taught his son some respect for the sport.
- jshooter1377, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4A lot of people wished he walked away from that crash, including me.
:( - inactive, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4You're absolutely right about impulse/change of momentum/G forces.
What would have saved him was a HANS (Head And Neck Support) device. I've worn one before and it completely restricts head movement except for a few degrees to either side. They suck, but they save lives, and NASCAR mandates them now. - krukster86, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3Reminds me of that Onion video

Please see: Watkins Glen, Infineon, Montreal, Mexico City, etc.
Also, why save all your criticism for NASCAR? What about Indy? NHRA? - inactive, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3I see what you're saying, but why limit it to just NASCAR? Why not motor sports in general?
Also, 43 cars driving a 500 mile race at 5 mpg would consume the same amount of gas as just 1,000 fans driving 50 miles to and from any sporting event. Wouldn't it make more sense to eliminate Major League Baseball, which has about 15 games almost every night between April and October? - jshooter1377, on 09/20/2008, -1/+4Damn you are dumb...
Just...don't think anymore. The human race will live longer if you don't. - IChazI, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3werd ^^ I agree with this comment 100%
- freehunter, on 09/20/2008, -1/+4I remember watching it then going to a hockey game assuming he was fine. I was told by a guy in the stands that he had died. It looked fine, but he wasn't wearing his seatbelt.
- yeahaboutthat, on 09/20/2008, -1/+3Apparently, natural selection works at 216 mph. Who knew?
- Brian48216, on 09/20/2008, -2/+4I won't make fun of him because people shouldn't have to die so needlessly, but I will say that he knew of the hazards of driving without a HANS device and yet he insisted on going without one.
If he put his machismo I don't need no scientist to tell me what to do attitude away, the man might very well still be racing today. - FrankTheTank17, on 09/20/2008, -6/+8Hey let's make fun of one of the greatest, if not the greatest, race car driver's death...
- Pixelpaws, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2Thanks for saving me the trouble of even clicking the link.
- tightscrummy, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2Why are they racing pickup trucks? This makes NASCAR look classy.
- sq2shooter, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2It's a HANS device, a HANDS device is known as gloves.
- markus7353, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2I bet he got twice as much traffic with the "(with videos)" comment
- tehsilentcircus, on 09/20/2008, -1/+3Actually if your were smart the above acronym would be NSCR. I'm just saying ...
- punkcat, on 09/20/2008, -1/+3i agree with both of you
- inactive, on 09/20/2008, -1/+3@Lukesed
"You can tell how bad the NASCAR drivers are at this, comparing their current cars to forty-year-old handling. Even when the f1 drivers screw up they do it better."
Wait, did you just try to compare handling characteristics between heavy, low-downforce cars and light, high-downforce cars? Quite the gearhead, aren't you? Also, I'm not exactly sure how F1 drivers are able to "screw up better," but I've noticed they've been screwing up constantly since they banned TC.
"The guy I was responding to didn't bring them up."
Nor did he specifically mention NASCAR. He simply said it was in bad taste to insult the dead, and you used this comment to imply that ALL road course drivers are somehow automatically more talented than Dale Earnhardt ever was (which I pointed out wasn't a valid criticism, since NASCAR has been racing at road courses since the 50s).
Out of curiosity, how do feel about the results of the 2002 Race of Champions? Clearly, someone with autoracing tastes as "sophisticated" as yours is familiar with it. - IChazI, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2Holy *****, that is an extremely violent crash.
- sq2shooter, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1It is amazing that Earnhardts crash was the least horrific of the group yet he was one of the few that didn't walk away. And he had the newest safety devices the others did not.
- Xihix, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1No, I'm a pretty healthy person. I rarely eat any processed foods, I make everything on my own, I run 4-5 times a week.
- swears, on 09/20/2008, -2/+3I circled left of this article.
=p - WheezyMustafa, on 09/20/2008, -1/+2What's a Nascar?
- beedo34, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1you're a ***** retard. NASCAR takes just as much skill and concentration as any other kind of racing. it involves using your hands for much more than just steering wheel control and it also does require an intimate knowledge of the track, as time of day and rubber patches can affect performance and handling.
oh, and did i mention that these cars go 200+ MPH at some tracks? ***** pussy WRC. - nydwarf, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1Yeah that was a helluva crash! The biggest change this would have made to NASCAR is to get more robust in car cameras!
- matt2m, on 09/20/2008, -1/+2Same thing with WRC we lost Colin Mcrae. Nascar is just turning left with your foot on the gas it takes skill not to be sucked into the wall but that's it. Its the same predictable ***** for how many laps WRC is exciting and the fans are up in it, being a few feet sometimes a few inches away from a car speeding by you. Unscripted bah check out WRC.
- dtimoney, on 09/25/2008, -0/+1pretty awesome. Not a big racing fan but I liked this !
- ferrariman60, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1Ha, that's true about the NHRA. They do seem to have a nice balance. And yeah, the concrete wall thing is a completely idiotic, antiquated thing..... but oh well. I wasn't just referring to open top racing, though- if you look at any of these wrecks, the car is almost completely intact. While a really strong roll cage is good, it also needs to deform in order to not kill the driver- that's something nascar doesn't do at all. There seems to be a lot of room behind the driver in the cage that would probably allow for quite a bit of energy absorption, but I'm no engineer, lol. And some of those wrecks would not have been nearly that bad had some simply safety precautions been taken. SAFER barriers would probably have help save Earnhardt, and crashing into a break in the wall for cars to go into the infield is just stupid- shouldn't that gate be very, very well protected to prevent that very type of crash from happening?
- Vito82, on 09/20/2008, -1/+2How is it that in 1990 NASCAR still hadn't thought to have crew members wear protective headgear and flame-retardant clothing. And no pitlane speed limits???
Geez, you;d think these cars were running on leaded fuel or something...
...
Oh wait, yeah they are. -
