- hatchetbearer, on 10/22/2007, -5/+35Did anyone actually read the article, he already did this, and succeeded. its nuts and actually held my attention great read
- kgorczyn, on 10/24/2007, -9/+32Just keep your mini-van in the right lane OK?
Prick. - ifknot, on 10/17/2007, -3/+24Great article, i'm torn about what he did though. Ultimately I'm just relieved that despite living a police state he could still make it. Sometimes 'the system' seems so huge and overpowering, so it's good to know that 2 nuts and a tricked out BMW can still beat that system. It gives me hope...
- kgorczyn, on 10/17/2007, -6/+22Why does everyone associate speeding with deaths? Autobahn anyone?
If I had kids I would honestly rather have them drive with someone like this that's in the article, who is paying attention to the road, has a planned trip, knows what to expect, going 100+mph; rather than good old grandpa sporting going 35mph trying to merge on the highway in his Caddy.
You should not be driving if you cant realize that the left lane is for passing only. - AdamFromMyspace, on 10/24/2007, -4/+18One of the best reads I've seen in a LONG time. Submitter, thank you for posting this.
- RxDaniel, on 10/22/2007, -3/+15I called the cops and told them to warm up the flux capacitor.
- Bridea, on 10/17/2007, -1/+12Keep reading.
- KanosWRX, on 10/20/2007, -5/+16While I believe NASCAR is a waste in more ways then just gas, I do think our speed limits, more so in rural areas are dreadfully to low of a speed limit. It's a proven fact we have some of the slowest speed limits in the modern world and the highest accident rates. Yet countries with higher speed limits have less accidents. It's not that speed kills, its that their are a lot of stupid drivers in America. We need much stricter driving tests not slower speeds.
- mllawso, on 10/20/2007, -1/+11I'd rather be on the road with ten of this guy than one soccer mom talking on the cell phone.
- moskaudancer, on 10/17/2007, -4/+14You don't really have a choice, you're already a prick anyway... :)
- Bridea, on 10/24/2007, -3/+11Awesome read.
- snappleman, on 10/17/2007, -2/+9you obviously don't know how those jokes work
- superdoofus, on 10/24/2007, -1/+84. Waste of comments by people that make their kids wear watershoes when they go to the pool so they don't scuff their feet on the non-slip surfaces as they play marco-polo in a lifejacket and water wings while employing a dry-land "buddy system".
- kgorczyn, on 10/17/2007, -5/+12I honestly believe he has more regard for people he may "injure or kill" than 90% of American drivers. He uses his head when he drives. He is aware of his surroundings. He is paying more attention to the road than any person he passes.
Have you not been driving around lately? American driving tests are a ***** joke. Clearly this guy is an experienced, prepared driver. - jlungu, on 10/19/2007, -5/+11Oh yeah ... no cop would want to pull THAT car over ... Good luck.
- faet, on 10/17/2007, -2/+8So why is he stupid?
Things he has pointed out:
American driving tests are a ***** joke.
Is that a stupid statement? or is giving some one 4min to || park, 4 min to uturn a good test of driving skill? because that is all my driving test was in MD. And you could still pass if you hit the cone (representation of the car infront of you) while doing your || parking, also given 25' to do it; a maybach is 19' a civic is 12' (for refference).
Q. Aren't most traffic accidents caused by speeding?
A. No, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) claims that 30 percent of all fatal accidents are "speed related," but even this is misleading. This means that in less than a third of the cases, one of the drivers involved in the accident was "assumed" to be exceeding the posted limit. It does not mean that speeding caused the accident. Research conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation showed that the percentage of accidents actually caused by speeding is very low, 2.2 percent.
http://www.motorists.org/speedlimits/ - RogerStrong, on 10/17/2007, -1/+6>> Even if he did, it would be the other persons fault.
No, it woudn't. When someone has a blind driveway on 55mph road, they know how much time they have to pull out. They have a safety margin in case someone comes around the corner ant the wrong moment doing 65. No-one is prepared for some moron doing 110, nor should they be. - scoutxxor, on 10/19/2007, -4/+9damn, this is sick! their equipment set-up is amazing
- pardonmedoug, on 10/17/2007, -1/+6meh, it's a good article with about 1000 times more information that yesterday's blogspam. don't mind the repeat story in this instance.
- redscofield, on 10/19/2007, -3/+8One of the best written articles i've read... THIS is why i love digg
- lotu, on 10/17/2007, -2/+7Actually I usually just start following them, it makes driving far more interesting. And I figure the cops can only pull one of us over so I have better odds that way.
- RogerStrong, on 10/17/2007, -1/+6You probably didn't have the Cessna acting as spotter plane for you either.
- Diffy, on 10/19/2007, -2/+7Did you two morons read the article? They already completed the trip and beat the record.
- kiiwii, on 10/19/2007, -5/+10Are you people seriously saying that if you were driving down the highway, doing 73 in a 65, and someone flies up in back of you flashing their lights so you move over, you wouldn't immediately think "I hope a cop pulls that ***** over"?
- S1L3NTC, on 10/17/2007, -7/+11There is a lot of applied science and strategy that goes into NASCAR races, but I guess their subtlety could be easily overlooked by an intellectual juggernaut such as yourself.
- VAXcat, on 10/17/2007, -3/+7Yep. Left turns that violate opposing traffic's right of way kill vastly more numbers of people than speeding...you hear more about speeding because there's no way to use radar to set up a revenue generating illegal left turn radar trap. Speeding is pretty far down the list when it comes to casuing accidents and fatalities.
- srodolff, on 10/17/2007, -5/+9Too bad that this happened several months ago and he couldn't post it because of statutes of limitations had to expire. He made it.
- goeatsmsht, on 10/17/2007, -5/+8Cannonball Run, 2007
- revarien, on 10/17/2007, -4/+7All I wanted was to see the driver, in a very Patrick Stewart manner, say, "Make it so."
- Fratm, on 10/19/2007, -2/+5Good luck? Did you read the entire article? He no longer needs good luck, he did it.. He beat the old record by 1 hour 3 minutes.
-Fratm - jpaolini, on 10/18/2007, -0/+3Don't pull the "waste of gas" card out on this one. Gimme a break..
- camaroz06, on 10/17/2007, -3/+6at first I just thought, well whats so great he just drove fast.
but its much more impressive after you read the article and all the work that went into the run. Pretty cool - tmbrwolf19, on 10/17/2007, -2/+5Alex Roy usually wins the Gumball 3000. However, compared to most of the idiots in it, he is actually a very talented driver. Speed does not equate to deaths. People seem to get this autoracing image and imagine death and carnage. Believe it or not, the most accident prone age group is not your 'need for speed' junkie early 20 somethings, its the 60+ age group. A young kid wrapping himself around a light pole makes better news then the 5 elderly gentleman that rear ended people at red lights. Speed is rarely the problem, its driver training and driver awareness.
- faet, on 10/17/2007, -3/+6Chances are he'd be doing 110 on the highway along with most of his driving. I seriously doubt he'd run into many blind driveways on the highway. Even if he did, it would be the other persons fault.
- ElectricGrandpa, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3It's not JUST the speed that's the problem here. There's the fact that he'll be extremely tired from driving 30+ hours straight. There's the fact that his focus is on going as fast as possible and keeping his average speed fast.
Speeding ABSOLUTELY increases the toughness of driving. You have less time to react, and it takes more time to slow down. In any kind of bad weather it's extremely stupid to be going fast, it'll greatly increase the chances of skidding out.
It's DANGEROUS. I don't know how you could argue that it's not. It puts INNOCENT people at risk. - RogerStrong, on 10/17/2007, -1/+3So you wouldn't have a problem with someone playing Russian Roulette with you either, without asking your permission?
- Outdoor83, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2Dear God, we do not need more 19 year olds going 120MPH.
- maybeinoregon, on 10/17/2007, -2/+4Just reading the article got my adrenaline pumping - right on - I wonder how long they slept for when it was all over - I have driven many points on their route - one time in Oklahoma they had the ENTIRE northbound freeway slowing down and funneling into one lane - as you pulled through the cones at around 5 MPH you could hear over a police radio - mile marker XX 115 MPH, mile marker XX 118 MPH, mile marker XX 118 MPH - I looked at the officer and asked 'was that me'? He replied, 'yes son, you need to pull over there' - he pointed to the side of the freeway where there were around a dozen cars - each receiving a citation of one form or another - it was my understanding from the officer, that Oklahoma patrols by air, and frequently do 'speed traps' of this nature - the guys in the article were lucky they didn't run into one of those 'traps' cause there isn't anywhere to go, or anywhere to get off....
- mllawso, on 10/17/2007, -2/+4Move a little piece around a board. Repeat.... 1000 times. Cause that is what the chess players do and they are the ones that get famous.
- Outdoor83, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2Driving 3000+ miles, not sleeping, not resting, and passing 18-wheelers on the shoulder at 120 MPH where there may be pedestrians isn't endangering anyone? I'm sure this guy is a good driver. What he did cannot be done safely. By anyone. Other American drivers are too unpredictable, there's too many deer, etc. I don't care if he drove it *perfectly*, at those speeds and those spaces, it wasn't safe due to the factors he could not control.
- RogerStrong, on 10/17/2007, -2/+4Yes. And one of those selfish morons killed an elderly man and seriously injured her husband this year in just one of their accidents.
- dmann, on 10/19/2007, -2/+4My money is on Captain Chaos..... DUHN DUUUUN DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHN!
- Nesh, on 10/17/2007, -2/+3go back to 4chan
- radyum, on 10/17/2007, -3/+4That's a very good read, and I'm sure there are many people who dream about doing this.
- superdoofus, on 10/18/2007, -2/+3excuse me, but this was the finest test of humanity as it relates to automotive usage while deeply integrating collected data and mathematical theoreticals. this wasn't some kiddies honking across the interstates as much as it was trained individuals preparing for and abiding by self-set conduct which is set upon a goal. their testament to the course is rendered valid and safer within the moment that others on the road take a call on their cell-phone or fumble with their fm tuner...who is operating their vehicle more mindfully and with utmost adherence to the movements or vehicular gestures of others?
- superdoofus, on 10/17/2007, -1/+2yeah. that's why they had a spotter plane and cb communication and all other manner of road communication and sat. links to traffic patterns and military binoculars and all the back-research as per construction sites and bottlenecks...because they weren't concerned with safety.
they anticipated (with research and recon) everything that might effect their run. call me the next time you have a private pilot telling you that there might be a slowdown around the corner that you might have to be aware of in real-time vs. once every 10 minutes on your commuter radio. every moment of their drive was far more thought out and researched than any drive to work you have ever taken. - HanSolo69, on 10/19/2007, -1/+2They could get better MPG without all that ***** in the car.
- moskaudancer, on 10/17/2007, -2/+3DeathRace 200...7.
- jpaolini, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Please. NASCAR is a sport (and a damn popular one at that). I'm personally not a fan who sits there and watches every week or anything, but who really cares about the gas consumption. It's a sport many people enjoy and something many people look forward to. You can't tell me they're going to start limiting the amount of NASCAR (or F1, whatever) races because of a fear of "needlessly" using gas. That's ridiculous.
It's like saying they should outlaw baseball because the wooden bats kill too many trees.. -_- - ethnicman, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1You are right that the US has the most accidents but while other countries have fewer accidents the percentage of fatalities in these accidents are much higher. In the us you are much more likely to survive the accident
