- BigLou, on 06/30/2009, -4/+307Wow, I would totally have sex with both of those cars. Hahahaha... no, but seriously.
I would. - zslice, on 06/30/2009, -1/+213"What we've proved there is that the fastest car in the world, is faster than another car."
it may not be groundbreaking journalism, but it sure is fun to watch. - adremali, on 06/30/2009, -3/+195....aaaaanndd boner
- keggdirdle, on 06/30/2009, -2/+186Tog Gear = Dugg!
- kepone, on 06/30/2009, -3/+157Honestly, the bugatti could have launched better.. and accelerated faster.. the car was not in " top speed" mode, and Richard Hammond was using full auto mode instead of the sequential shift paddles..In all testing, including Top Gear mag and others, the Bugatti has shown superior 0-60 and 1/4 mile times than the McLaren ever posted when it was the hot item in mags 15 years ago...It definitely could have owned that race from beginning to end..Top Gear races are always set up to be close. They could have put The Stig in the Veyron.
I love both cars though! - kepone, on 06/30/2009, -3/+109Basically all they proved is that even in the slowest possible configuration, the Veyron will still beat the McLaren.
- Minters, on 06/30/2009, -0/+96If you ever read Top Gear magazine, it was always private owners.
Most cars will come from the manufacturer, but limited production cars such as this will usually come from private owners. - MrSlav, on 06/30/2009, -2/+91Two amazing cars in an amazing city. Ah, I can dream.
- jtt123, on 06/30/2009, -1/+85both are sweet cars, i wonder who lets top gear use these cars
- RandyTheFool, on 06/30/2009, -0/+79I think Hammond's ridiculous hair was adding a bit of drag.
- sameer768, on 06/30/2009, -1/+73And he got to race the new Murcielago through the empty streets too.
One of the best two jobs in the world (the other being an astronaut) - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+71The Veyron may be newer, but I've always had a soft spot for McLarens. It's pretty amazing that a 15 year old car can still keep up.
I'll take either though :P - Bic823, on 06/30/2009, -2/+62youtube link in HD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVlbvxd0Q10&fmt ...
- angelgabe, on 06/30/2009, -0/+57Private owners and/or manufacturers.
- decker12, on 06/30/2009, -1/+57Top Gear is the best show on television, hands down and no discussion necessary.
- Joest23, on 06/30/2009, -2/+55I dunno about you guys, but I was rooting for the McLaren. It's legendary. It held the speed record for 10 years and modern supercar design wouldn't be the same without the McLaren.
What I don't like about Top Gear is how they're ignoring the SSC Aero. That, not the Veyron, is the world's fastest production car and they've only ever mentioned it once on the show, and it was negative. They need to give that car a chance. - m0tbaillie, on 06/30/2009, -0/+49Your dignity.
- fahrvergnuugen, on 06/30/2009, -0/+47Especially when you consider they Veyron has 4 turbos and 8 Liters while the F1 has 0 turbos and 6.1 liters.
- diggit83, on 06/30/2009, -0/+45Literally the best show ever
- pewpewpewpewpew, on 06/30/2009, -0/+44Is this you?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howabou ... - Soriven, on 06/30/2009, -2/+41Given the option, I would choose the McLaren in a heartbeat.
- jimmies, on 06/30/2009, -1/+36Lazy engineer?
There's nothing lazy about understanding the aerodynamics that keep a car stable at 240+mph (a very real danger), and there's certainly nothing lazy about building a driveline that can reliably withstand 900+ lb/ft of torque while remaining completely docile around town.
The Veyron was designed by anything but "lazy" engineers. - mochaman, on 06/30/2009, -0/+35Bugatti Veyron 1,888 kg (4,160 lb) 1000 HP 250 MPH
McLaren F1 1,140 kg (2,513 lb) 600 HP 240 MPH
I'm no engineer but this might explain why the F1 took off so fast at the very beginning of the race but was not able to sustain the race against a car that is twice the weight and horsepower. - saikyan, on 06/30/2009, -0/+32Bugatti is French operated, German owned (VW). It's original founder was Italian.
- mavedatthews85, on 06/30/2009, -6/+38I saw the Bugatti and the McLaren race and I JIZZED... IN... MY PANTS.
- noizeuk, on 06/30/2009, -0/+29I think you mean "a crisis".
- LiquidIse, on 06/30/2009, -0/+29I just had a mangasm
- manfatallyslain, on 06/30/2009, -0/+26This was an unfair race. The Bugatti was painted red, and everyone knows a red car goes faster.
- Larssonk22, on 06/30/2009, -2/+28whats this red stuff pouring from my ears and this white stuff in my pants.
- VelvetoneFusion, on 06/30/2009, -1/+23Not that it matters, but I agree. The McLaren looks it was designed by aliens to do nothing but drive on Earth streets better than our puny Earth cars.
The Veyron looks a bit like a ladybug. - ampledismantle, on 06/30/2009, -5/+26The McLaren is a far more beautiful car aesthetically in my opinion (and it was designed 15+ years ago). Fastest car in the world or not, the Veyron has always been lacking in the looks department.
- KokomoNYC, on 06/30/2009, -1/+22Eh, at least the Top Gear guys can avoid freeze-dried ice cream and that daily existential crisis.
Space scares the crap out of me. - kepone, on 06/30/2009, -2/+23It's SSC that is ignoring all of the magazines and car tv shows..also, keep in mind that the Veyron is *Electronically Limited * to 253 mph to save the tires, it can go faster. The SSC will also not be nearly as easy to drive as the Veyron, it is not nearly as well engineered, it's just fast.
- kepone, on 06/30/2009, -1/+21Unlikely- more like private owners.
- alpha19, on 06/30/2009, -0/+20The F1 is the McLaren.
- cyberdork, on 06/30/2009, -0/+19Unfortunately it's just upscaled HD, since TopGear is STILL produced in SD, no kidding! The BBC produces talk shows in HD, but a fantastically filmed show like TopGear is still produced in SD. The Polar Special was an exception.
- Cyberdactyl, on 06/30/2009, -2/+20I would choose the F1 for several reasons, it has faster 0-170, who's gonna be going 170+ on public roads...at least in the US?
I looks a LOT better. It's better on gas. It handles the track better. - Libertaire, on 06/30/2009, -2/+20Sick. The McLaren is the sexier car though.
- bumcheekcity, on 06/30/2009, -1/+19Interesting that they didn't put they Veyron into it's ultra-race mode. You can clearly see the spoiler come up (and it doesn't come up at all when the car is in race mode, or whatever it's called).
Not that I want to detract from the coolness of the situation, I just want to be a car geek about this kind of stuff :D - kepone, on 06/30/2009, -1/+18No, it's a 7 speed dual clutch sequential gearbox, just like the DSG system in Vw's and Audis.. it is not a "Tiptronic". It is the only transmission the car is offered with, and it is superior to the Ferrari F1 shifting system used in cars like the F430
- kepone, on 06/30/2009, -0/+17You're an idiot, it took them forever to perfect that design, it is similar to two narrow angle VR8's ( similar to the Passat w8 engine ), which in itself is an engineering masterpiece, they had several other designs including an 18 cylinder engine before they got everything perfected and ended up with the quad turbo w16. They also had to design a gearbox to cope with a car that does 800ft/lb torque not far off idle and last for decades instead of just one or two races. There is a reason that VW loses over a million dollars on every veyron they sell.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -1/+18Wait isn't the SSC Aero faster then the bugatti?
- dsmx, on 06/30/2009, -0/+16In a straight line the bugatti would probably win, however round a track would the weight of the bugatti mean that it would be slower than the mclaren?
- 83JB, on 06/30/2009, -1/+17how does one exactly have sex with a car?
- jwolcott, on 06/30/2009, -0/+15Dubai's ugly sister.
- EH90, on 06/30/2009, -0/+15@83JB
http://www.textfiles.com/sex/sex-cars.faq - VEGETAble, on 06/30/2009, -0/+14Well they were in Abu Dhabi, home of every nice car imaginable.
- inigomntoya, on 06/30/2009, -0/+14Some might call it 'innocence'
- kepone, on 06/30/2009, -3/+16Claims are one thing, reality is another.. you need something near 2000hp to hit 275mph figuring in a perfect driving environment.. I doubt the SSC is anywhere near that..SSC's claims are irrelevant, it's record is relevant. Bugatti could just claim the veyron could do 300. Anyway, getting more power out of the veyron would be easy, it has 8 liters and 4 turbos to work with, if the gearbox and cooling system could handle it, that motor could easily make over 1500hp.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+13They designed the whole car before lunch then took a nap. I saw them. They didn't even clean up after themselves. They are super duper lazy.
