- itc518, on 03/20/2009, -0/+10That looks like a nice little car for a hybrid.
- Dinsdale77, on 03/21/2009, -0/+6This is an easily embraceable future.
- EtherGnat, on 03/21/2009, -0/+3Wow, you're an idiot. There are some ridiculously fast, nimble sports car hybrids out there, and even more in development.
- phosphite, on 03/21/2009, -1/+4You don't think the Supra or MR2 were excellent sports cars? How about the early 90's Celica AWD Turbo, the later Celica GT-S (1.8 high-revving VVT version), or the drift-o-matic Corolla RWD?
- MisterFurious, on 03/21/2009, -0/+2Not buried. I agree. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited about a performance hybrid that I could actually afford, but if Toyota slaps the "MR2" on this glorified golf cart, they're dishonoring the MR2 name.
Then again, Toyota already proved that they forgot that the name is supposed to stand for "Mid-engine Rear drive 2-seater" when they released the convertible, which they tried to pass off as a "Midship Runabout 2-seater." They have no shame.
The only reason I can think of for slapping the MR2 moniker on this thing is that supposedly (I read this in Car & Driver years ago), tariffs on imported vehicles are higher if you introduce a new model, rather than attaching the name to a new body style. This was why the Nissan Altima was originally called the Nissan Sentra Altima. - MisteR2, on 03/21/2009, -0/+23.5 liter v6? Sounds like the drivetrain out of the rx400h. Could be interesting since that has an electric rear diff. Slide that to the front of the vehicle and you could have a hybrid group S mr2.
Want. Now. - SoupGFX, on 03/21/2009, -0/+2I like it.
- Infidelcastr0, on 03/21/2009, -2/+4I know I'll get buried for saying this, but this sounds stupid. I'm all for green technology, but an automatic hybrid goes against everything the mister two was all about. Light, nimble, fun, easy to work on, and free from techno-gimmickry that interferes with the drive.
It would be one thing if they called it something else, if a green creampuff is what you want, more power to ya, but this is no MR2.
Next they'll be trying to pass off a hydrgen powered, front wheel drive crossover as a "Supra". - Smills, on 03/21/2009, -0/+2The second picture looks much better than the first there. The concept doesn't look bad, I just think the 2011 pic looks better.
- xdevit, on 03/21/2009, -2/+3Reminds me of the Volt concept. Speaking of the Volt I'm kinda pissed that the real Volt didn't end up like its concept. I'm sure this one from Toyota will end up the same.. fugly.

2011 Volt..

Yea the real volt doesn't look bad.. but I no longer WANT the car. - yaazz, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I guess its pretty good for a Hybrid but call me when its around 5 or 6
- thomasshin, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1NICE.. can have your cake and eat it too! Nice design - could not see how many MPG it gets. If I can get 40-50 MPG on my sports car, I'd drive with no guilt. I used to have a MR2 in the 90's, and it was all about the handling. I'd buy this for $24k range if it got great mileage with the benefits of a real sports car... handling!
- dimonneon, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1Nice car. I like it.
- CaptainObviouss, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1Who cares if it is sport or not the hybrid part is so cool. But, then again i hope toyota wouldn't make this a usa only car again. i would put my self in dept for a car like this. A small light 2 seater with mid rear engine plus it a one bad looking ass hybrid.
- EmperorChow, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1The design looks similar to the BMW GINA Light Visionary Model Concept car.
- inactive, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1How f@cking hard is it to link to the original article? We shouldn't have to wade through page after page of ad infested blog spammers to get to the people that broke the story.
- Disease, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1A paddle shifter is when you have two paddles behind your wheel to shift up or down rather than having a stick shifter.
- inactive, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1I'm a huge toyota fan but i'm sick of seeing these concepts that are never put into production. FT-HS was rumoured to be released end 2008 - early 2009. Lexus LF-A supercar has had 2 concept models released but no word on production. Their team up with subaru to produce a $20k revival of the AE86? where's that? I loved the MR2, Supra and Celica ... c'mon toyota, get your act together and actually produce this damn economy sports car. Here in australia, the only toyota "sports" car you get is the Aurion which is basically a camry with a big engine and a supercharger. big woop.
- Dinsdale77, on 03/21/2009, -3/+4a mini cooper S is just over seven seconds, and is widely considered a quick, sporty, and fun car. Also, the last MR2 took over 8 seconds to get to 60. You don't know much about cars, do you?
- xxlpay, on 05/13/2009, -0/+0Great little hybridcar, it the future, see more hybrid cars here: http://www.xxlpay.com
- Spuy767, on 03/21/2009, -2/+1Yup, clearly I know nothing about cars. You'd probably tell me that I'm lying when i tell you that my Stock buick Regal will run 11's on street tires too.
- evilrobot02, on 03/21/2009, -1/+1Most people would love Toyota to combine its reputation of reliability and quality with a new sports car.
- oteque, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1cant wait for this sportcar to be on the road..must be awesome..
- EMGroup, on 03/27/2009, -0/+0I'll buy it. I've been waiting for a solid japanese sports car under $50k. The Nissan GTR is something special but it's too pricy. The new MR2 can be the next big thing.
- Disease, on 03/21/2009, -2/+2I'll embrace hybrids when they don't make me feel like a fruit driving them. This is a step in the right direction.
Although as far as being green you're helping the environment more by buying a used civic that gets 35 mpg rather than buying a new hybrid. The amount of energy used to produce and transport the battery in a hybrid does a lot more environmental damage than driving a regular car.
If you want mileage then go for it. - DrHoliday, on 03/21/2009, -1/+1A paddle-shifter on a seven second 0 - 60?
That's sort of ridiculous. Just give us a manual. - walkingcrow, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1My Toyota Camry goes 0 to 60 in 7.9 seconds. It's only a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder gas engine with a battery-powered electric motor for 187 hp. The Camry and the MR2 look to cost about the same, I guess it just depends it you need the bigger Camry or the slightly faster and cooler looking MR2.
- AprylBreeze, on 03/21/2009, -0/+0finally, something besides the tesla hype.. and in toyota style, this car will be affordable...... and last till you die.
- agentpx, on 03/20/2009, -2/+1I like it. Nice car. Hope it won't turn when you stick your arms outside the window as jeff dunham says bout prius :d
- shieshky, on 03/21/2009, -3/+2the words "hybrid" and "sports car" should never ever be incorporated in to the same sentance let alone the same web page
- 07dcolem, on 03/21/2009, -3/+1The word "sports car" should never be associated with the Toyota company.
- mysmartypants, on 03/21/2009, -3/+0I wonder if it handles like a golf cart like the Prius does.
The circus clown marketplace looking for transportation will be thrilled. - onionoino, on 03/21/2009, -5/+1whats a paddle shifter
- Spuy767, on 03/20/2009, -12/+4Under 7 seconds, wow. That's not fast at all. If they want anyone other than the eco-douches to buy it, they're going to need to offer a ltitlle more mass market appeal, which, for a 'sports' car, would include a 0-60 time quicker than that of a Buick Sedan.
