- MattDell, on 06/16/2009, -1/+73Was there no thought put into the placement of that jersey barrier?
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -7/+70Wow truly a tragedy.
I'm also wondering how the driver who clipped him, feels after his dirty move on Carlos? - inactive, on 06/16/2009, -3/+61atleast he went out with a win
rest in peace. - Spikito, on 06/16/2009, -0/+39why did they have the wall positioned like that?
- okgenius33, on 06/16/2009, -0/+28Who put that ***** wall there?! This is all sorts of tragic and messed up. My condolences to the family.
- gvoakes, on 06/16/2009, -1/+27HURF DURF I'M TOO DUMB TO SCROLL DOWN
- HerrWolf, on 06/16/2009, -0/+24I saw an interview with the guy, Jorge Goeters, this morning on the news. He said the accident happened because he tried to pass Carlos and get to the first position, but Carlos moved to block him. The guy didn't have time to slow down, and hit his car from behind, causing Carlos' car to crash.
He said he had been with Carlos' family yesterday, and that everything was OK between them. He seemed pretty upset.
There's also a discussion about the barrier Carlos hit. Some people, like driver Mario Domínguez, say it shouldn't have been built there in the first place. - badenglishihave, on 06/16/2009, -0/+20It is very sad but I'm not sure how watching the video of his crash is disrespectful. Watching it over and over while saying "WOW that's ***** awesome!" is disrespectful but hopefully nobody does that.
It was a nationally televised event and if anything it illustrates to kids the dangers of driving at high speeds. Just because it's NASCAR on a closed circuit track doesn't mean it's a whole lot safer than excessive speeding on public roads. Anything can happen out there. - theysayjump, on 06/16/2009, -13/+33Holy *****, that was pretty bad.
I'm surprised that another country can tolerate NASCAR. - anselm83, on 06/16/2009, -2/+20More bizarrely, it sounds like he actually died and then won the race.
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -1/+18The car didn't explode. The barriers are filled with water. You can see water on the camera about midway through.
- jeches, on 06/16/2009, -1/+18welcome to Mexico my friend
- parkskier426, on 06/16/2009, -3/+16This kind of stuff happens all the time in nascar. It's unfortunate that he spun out the way that he did and hit the wall at that angle, but the driver that bumped him certainly shouldn't shoulder all the blame.
- elliotys, on 06/16/2009, -2/+14I think it is sad, and I don't think it is disrespectful to watch the video. There is something strangely compelling about our own mortality.
- okayokayokay, on 06/16/2009, -2/+13This death was 100% preventable.
Someone needs to be held accountable for such low safety standards and poor track design! - pathouston22, on 06/16/2009, -0/+11Do any American NASCAR tracks have a wall perpendicular to the speedway? That's just absurd.
- lex0429, on 06/16/2009, -1/+11video link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b036OYyiwoc
I would mostly blame that on the awful design of that track. Guys bump each other all the time in NASCAR, it wasnt really a dirty move. Also he was only going about 120mph, the cars that run the NASCAR series in America run 180-200 mph usually. - nosecohn, on 06/16/2009, -0/+9@Networktwenty3: Those were water barrels in front of the barrier. That's why there was so much spray on impact. The commentators mentioned in (in Spanish though).
- Networktwenty3, on 06/16/2009, -0/+9That is the first thing I thought, that is a horrible place for a cement barricade without any sort of cushioning, either have water/sand barrels or tires. I am sure we are never going to see that type of placement again.
Edit: I looked at it again, and it does look like a couple tires in front of the cement... Well definitely not enough. - mccartyba, on 06/16/2009, -2/+11You, sir, are full of FAIL and AIDS.
- JCinDE, on 06/16/2009, -2/+11I'm sure the death was unintentional, but it looked to me like that second place car intentionally clipped him pushing him into a spin.
- slowspin, on 06/16/2009, -7/+16That is the saddest thing I have ever seen. I'm not a NASCAR fan but it still breaks my heart to see this.
- pathouston22, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8Right. Since you don't like Nascar, we should get rid of it. All hail you.
- JCEEZ, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8I hate you spammer.
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 06/16/2009, -0/+7Dugg for hurf durf
- miggyb, on 06/16/2009, -0/+7A few highlights/translations from the video:
-The first announcer kept saying "that's not right." It's not clear whether he means that it's not very unsportsmanlike, or whether it's outright illegal.
-He was traveling at 200km/h or ~125mi/h. He crashes sideways into a concrete divider. The white stuff from the explosion is actually water from a cushioning barrel. He slowed down to a stop in less than a second, it seems. (Some math: 200km/h is ~55.5m/s. If it takes exactly one second to slow down from 55.5m/s to 0, then it means the deceleration was 55.5m/s^2. Divide that by 9.8m/s^2 and you realize that the impact was about 5.6G)
-That was the most dangerous part of the track, since there's no way to slow down gradually. If you crash into a corner, you're pretty much screwed. In any other part of the oval, you can slide down the wall and slow at a more reasonable rate. - minorthreat, on 06/16/2009, -0/+7"First and foremost I am not a nascar fan."
Maybe this is why your so angry. Your talking about a sport you know nothing about.
I am not a fan of many dangerous sports, but I never get mad at it's contestants when tragedy happens. I understand that if your in a piece of metal going 200mph+ bad stuff can happen.. what do you expect? Do you still stick your head in a hornets and then going crying and complaining to everyone because you got stung? - duewydo, on 06/16/2009, -1/+8What a terrible track design, this accident could have been avoided with better design and safety devices.
- benerjeestrikes, on 06/16/2009, -0/+7Game of life and death......But what the ***** wrong with those concrete walls on the side....can't they invest some more and make it safe...
- DreamVsPs2, on 06/16/2009, -3/+10wtf were they thinking taking out a part of the wall in the middle of the track.
- ThurmanMerman, on 06/16/2009, -1/+8the road ends, where the wall starts - Alber Camus
- AmericanGunner, on 06/16/2009, -2/+9I wish I was just a schmuck who was allowed to make the kind of money nascar drivers do...Oh and I dont think anyone will be going to your funeral frixionburne. Its just a thought.
- anexanhume, on 06/16/2009, -22/+28Truly sad. Out of respect, I'm not watching that video.
- jrod03, on 06/16/2009, -14/+20FTA: "In an attempt to expand their product overseas"
uh....since when is mexico overseas? - empeethree, on 06/16/2009, -0/+6looked to me that the car behind him took the wind off his tail causing him to spin. RIP
- matt3454, on 06/16/2009, -1/+7The title should be the other way round surely? He died and then won the race due to time limits.
Sad sad accident though. - jrobbi, on 06/16/2009, -1/+7troll
- HCProgramr, on 06/16/2009, -1/+7I'm speechless...my thoughts and prayers go out to that man's family. I doubt the second-place racer will ever sleep again.
- Roguecop, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5Major flaw in the design of the track. Nascar in the US has gone to great lengths to minimize 'hard' collision points on the inside of the track. Mexico needs to understand the safety first mantra and spend the time and money to make their tracks, and cars as safe as possible for the driver.
- offrdbandit, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5It was more Carlos's fault than the other driver(s). You can't move down on another car like that or you get spun. The other car had him beat inside, he tried to block the pass, and got himself killed. All it takes is a small miscalculation.
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -3/+8@frixionburne your a ***** doucher.... shut your mouth.
- fossilnews, on 06/16/2009, -1/+6That is really the saddest thing you have ever seen?
- finalcloud33, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5All drives bump one another, it is just part of the nature of the sport... these guys know what they get themselves into everytime they get in their cars. I am sure it wasn't on purpose.
its sad to see... but it happens - anselm83, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5I know. Which is why I wrote he "died and then won the race."
- Treshnell, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5Living is inherently dangerous, too. Every day your life is at risk.
- DrSc1ence, on 06/16/2009, -6/+11I just got done watching it over and over and all I kept saying is: WOW that's ***** awesome!
- anselm83, on 06/16/2009, -1/+6Wow: racism, ethnocentrism, and cold apathy all in one gross package. Congrats on setting a new low.
- dafragsta, on 06/16/2009, -1/+5I have never seen a stock car disintegrate like that. Normally the fatal accidents are the ones that don't look as bad as they really are on TV, like Dale Earnhardt's wreck. Wow.
- Shiftgood, on 06/16/2009, -1/+5ugh, you're such a ***** person.
"Miss leading"... nice. - HerrWolf, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4@Treshnell: You're right, he was trying to win, the same as Pardo and every other driver in that race. But I guess you can't help feeling guilty if you're involved in an accident where one of your friends dies.
